Centennial Leo A2’S FORTE
Mass Induction

Humanity within Leadership

Restoring humanity to Leadership is a vital aspect that WE as young
leaders of Leos need to be concerned. We live in a world that serving
another has become a lower priority in our ‘to-do list’. We look out
for opportunities where we can gain something and not the other
way around. In many occasions, unintentionally we hurt and destroy
many in the way of achieving what we ‘want’ than what we ‘need’.
We are in a movement where we are serving to be served. We serve
by giving the best we can to make a better place for someone else’s
life. In return we build ourselves to be true human leaders. There
are five key human natures we need to inculcate in ourselves. To be
and do ‘Human Appreciation’, ‘Human Understanding’, ‘Human
Acceptance’, ‘Human Respect’ and ‘Human Empathy’.
When we follow these universal principles we ought to achieve
success in smoother and an effective manner. All those five factors
have one word in common and that is ‘Human’. This word gives an
entire different meaning to our vocabulary and our life. Being human
means being ‘Empathetic’, we as Leos deeply and truly need to follow
our mission in serving with a vision of empathy. First and foremost
understanding and respecting in focusing on our movement and our
service activities will upstage the true arena where recognition and
appreciation is done.
We won’t become true human leaders who will humanize our movement and society in one night or from one event. But it
doesn’t mean that we have to just sit back and wait until someone do the first move. As a true leader, YOU need to be the
first move in here. Go out, open your eyes and arms to understand and serve our organization with humanity.
We are in middle of a great war, we need to fight for ourselves, wear your shield and carry the weapon of ‘humanity’ and
let’s have a nerve to serve out!

Education is the pathway to achievement. It is a standout amongst the most imperative methods for
accomplishing more extensive advancement goals, for example, diminishing destitution, enhancing
wellbeing, reinforcing social equity, supporting peace and self-awareness.
Uneven quality and access to Education have turned out to be having significant issues in Sri Lanka, in
spite of its dedication to all inclusive arrangement. The vast majority of the well-equipped schools are
focused around urban communities and facilities accessible are extremely less and poor for distant
educational zones like Kebithigollawa. Along these lines with the goal of tending to those escape clauses
in the way we are able to do, “Jeewana Yathra'16 was organized and it was held from 31st of October to
2nd of November 2016 in Kebithigollawa, Anuradhapura.
A slender school life simply centered around passing examinations does exclude basic considering,
scientific aptitudes, issue - understanding abilities, identity improvement abilities and free thinking
aptitudes which are useful for advanced education and at last for employment Throu.gh this multi
service project; "Jeewana Yathra'16", we could direct 13 benefit ventures including Educational
Seminars for O/L students, Career Guidance for A/L Students and School Leavers, Skills and Leadership
Development for Prefects, Art Competition for School Children, Exercise Books, stationary and Library
book Donations for school kids, Medical Camp for elementary school children, Awareness campaigns
on Nutritional needs in school life, Environment and Kidney diseases, Teacher Training Programs, Drug
Prevention programs for school children in the remote zones of Kebithigollawa.
We additionally conducted a Fellowship session and a field trip to the historical city of Anuradhapura for
the Leos who joined with this program with the point of upraising the partnership among them.

Jeewana Yathra'16 was an aggregate effort of 13 Leo clubs in District 306A2 and through this project
we could draw out the way that tutoring is not only an instrumental device for delivering the up and
coming era of Labour force. It is about furnishing people with capacities to make a decent society, an
objective undercut by overwhelming reliance of tuition classes and intensity, yet could be upraised with
the impact of gallant people like us, Leos.
Dissimilar to numerous nationalities in its region, Sri Lanka has foundation and frameworks set up for
astounding education, yet variations stay as the greater part of the schools in remote ranges like Kebith-
igollawa that countenances the issue of uneven quality and access to quality instruction. Along these
lines our effort to fabricate an era which is both rationally and physically sufficiently solid to challenge
the future through Jeewana Yatha'16, was an opportune choice which was genuinely necessary to the
general public.
This great course was spearheaded by Leo Ravindu Vishan and Leo Kulani Jayathilaka who were the
project Chairpersons with the assistance of Project Secretary and Treasurer Leo Harsha Anthonige and
Leo Ashan Dilanka respectively.

5 OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER | lEO DISTRICT 306 A2

I can remember how I used to stargaze when I was a small child. When the sky
was dark I used go out with my dad and look up at the sky in search of stars. I
still can remember how my dad used to teach me the star patterns and how I
used to invent new star patterns connecting random stars.
I am not a professional stargazer nor I do it for scientific research, I do it just for the mere happiness I get looking
at the miraculous scenery the stars make in the dark nights. Getting amused by stargazing is not only for small
children, but it is for everybody who are wanderers in this stupefying world and for the people who love seeing
themselves as a part of an incredible and bigger picture.
Most of us go through life looking straight ahead. But when we reach some point, the stress we gain from it can
tear us down. So it is good for us to stop once in a while and look up, because you’ve got to look up to see stars.
The magical scenery they create will surely sooth all your pain and stress and then it will allow you to relax, enjoy
and get amused by the little things in life that you didn’t see earlier. In order to get away from the busy stressful
lives, four outstanding Leo clubs of 306A2; Leo Club of University of Moratuwa, Leo Club of Godigamuwa, Leo
Club of Katuwawala and Leo Club of Sri Lanka Technological Campus together with the Astronomical Association
of University of Moratuwa and the Subhodi Institute, Piliyandala organized a stargazing camp “NIGHT WATCH
2K16” presenting a new experience to all the Leos of Sri Lanka. It was a Night Sky Observation Camp and an
Astronomy Workshop held on 12th of November at Remuna Vidyalaya, Horana from 6PM onwards. Many Leos
who are curious about mysteries of the universe and love stargazing took part in this amazing event.
Even though we gathered to admire the beauty of the night sky, she concealed her beauty with heavy showers
like a pretty princess hides her beauty with pride. But the organizers did not let her ruin the whole unforgettable
cosmic experience which was planned to go till sunrise. First Astronomical Association of University of Moratuwa
gave a basic idea on astronomy which gave everyone a light to follow the stargazing path. The telescope which
was brought by the Subhodi Institute, Piliyandala was the most exciting thing in this whole event. They explained
every part of the telescope, how to focus it and how to use it. Although we could not see the stars the organizers
made it sure to make it an unforgettable memory for every Leo who participated. So the NIGHT WATCH for the
year 2016 ended in style.

’fifkyfia ;s<sKh¶the Children’s Day Project organized by Leo Clubs of Katuwawala and
Piliyandala was held for the 3rd consecutive year on the 1st of October at the Neurosurgical ward
for Children, General Hospital Colombo.

There are currently around 17 Children residing at this ward who are of different age groups
ranging from the small babies to kids around the age of 10-12 years. As Leos we annually conduct
this project commemorating the Children’s day. As in the previous years, this year also we could
donate fruits, medicines, sanitary items, toys and stationary items which were collected as
generous donations from our own members.
We gave each child a balloon, sanitary items and a fruit pack consisting of oranges, apples and
grapes. Also, some important and mostly needed medicines were handed over to the Nurses
in-charge along with some toys and stationary items.
Those kids who are there, they live with an immense pain. A pain which they cannot describe
about in their own words. Some bear a pain to a level where they cannot even get up or at least
sit on the bed. For them, October 1st is just another day. But for the World, it’s the World Chil-
dren’s Day. The pain the mothers are having in their hearts which they don’t show to the outside
world, the hopes they have about their kids, those feelings cannot be turned into words.
However, on this Children’s Day, the smile on the faces of the kids and their mothers made us feel
that we could relieve their pain at least for few minutes.

Green Sri Lanka
Leo Club of Godigamuwa

Forests cover one third of the earth's
land mass, performing vital functions and
services around the world which make
our planet alive with possibilities. In fact,
1.6 billion people depend on forests for
their livelihoods. They play a key role
in our battle against climate change,
releasing oxygen into the atmosphere
while storing carbon dioxide.
We initiated the project “Green Sri
Lanka” on 01st of September 2016
through publishing a YouTube video and
sharing among social media sites such as
Facebook. The Project aim is to educate
and create awareness about the beauty
of Sri Lanka and importance of protecting
our country.
We started an email campaign through Leo District 306 A2. “Green Sri Lanka” is a continuous project which falls
under the category of Environment & Energy Conservation, Global Warming Reduction and Waste Management.
As the second step of this project our main focus was to educate public regarding the importance of protecting
the natural habitats.
Failing to address current global issues will lead to cause acid rains, ozone depletion, over utilization of natural
resources, increase in global warming, destruction of natural habitats, climatic changes and leaves a toxic
environment aftermath that permanently affect humans and eco immune systems. Every moment spent in
protecting and keeping the environment clean could save a life; This should not be merely limited to the dengue
epidemic, but also to the numerous natural disasters caused by extreme weather conditions.
Today we are reaping the results of our careless actions; pollution of all forms over the years has had a
tremendous impact on world environment. However, many still fail to realize how environment pollution and
destruction has posed a serious threat to the very existence of life and the continuity of Mother Earth. So, it is very
important to create awareness throughout the world about the need to protect and conserve our environment.
We have to put an immediate stop to our careless actions if we want to save ourselves and the Planet Earth,
the only home we have. The main objective of this continuous project is to increase the knowledge of the
community, make them aware about the importance and consequences of destructing the natural habitats and
wasting/over-using resources. Protection and development of the human environment is a major issue which
affects the wellbeing of mankind and economic growth and development throughout the world.
After all what will be the ultimate result of achieving economic growth without prosperity and achieving every
possible highest level without a proper place to live? Therefore, we should think systematically and perform our
duty towards protecting mother earth by living along with the nature and not going against.

“wysñ fifkyig irKla”, has been a well-recognized welfare project hosted by Leo club of Dehiwala East for
the 5th consecutive time. The project was aimed to serve some of street beggars who live in the streets around
Dehiwala, Boralesgamuwa and Pepiliyana. The project has been an award winning concept in the Leo history.
Since street beggars are having the toughest times in their lives for a lifetime it would be a dream of them to live
their life as an ordinary person at least for a day. The concept of the project is to take away their stress and pain
at least for a day and to serve them in the best way we can. This helping hand which shares the affection and care
for the helpless people, who already lost it, is named as “wysñ fifkyig irKla”.
The project basically served for selected five elderly street beggars who are in the age of 50 to 80 and some of them
were disable to walk and to take care of themselves. They were even unable to cut their own hair and beard and
some of them had wounds all over the body which were not treated for years.
Project was started at around 10 am and club members engaged in bathing and helping those elders to clean
themselves and also were offered with new clothes, towels, and some personal care materials. Then we served
a well prepared lunch for them as well as served fruits and drinks as they preferred. As the club always wanted
to take care of their health we brought a doctor to check up all the health issues and offered all the medicine
required and advised to take care of the health in future issues.
The project was a major success as we were praised and honored by those helpless elders by saying that “it was
one of the greatest days in our lives”. Seeing their happiness was the greatest pleasure we had out of this project
and we hope to see those smiles by helping them whenever we are capable of.

“Cancer” is a fatal illness that has challenged the world. During the spring of their life when they should
be running about enjoying the bliss of childhood, fate has condemned them to a hospital where life is all
about heavy drugs and painful chemotherapy.
The event car wash was held on 25th September 2016 at Rattanapitiya from 8.00 a.m. onwards.
Proceeds from this event will be donated to the children’s ward of cancer hospital in order to meet their
immediate needs. We seriously considered selling pre - sale tickets as a survey to find out how many
people will come to the car wash ahead of time and cover the budget before the event. Our Leo advisor,
Lion Anura Goonathilake gave his location for the project.
We are thankful to have this opportunity and would like to express our sincere gratitude to everyone
who joined with us. Our objective is to have a prayer for those loved ones who have lost their lives in the
battle of cancer and to make sure that they will not end their journey until we support them and provide
them a helping hand.

Millions are suffering amidst of war, famine, poverty, and negligence and it is hard to decide exactly
where your money can do the most good. That is why we initiated our project “ukqIH;ajfha
wreKe,a,”, a continuous project where we provide packaged food, clothing and other essential
requirements for families in need. The core aim of the project is to lend a helping hand for those families
suffering from poverty.
Although the Government of Sri Lanka has implemented poverty reduction strategies, these might not
completely satisfy the needs of people when compared to the increasing levels of inflation and gap
between rich and poor. Therefore, we decided to identify a family in need and donate a dry ration food
pack worth Rs.8500 including essential requirements on a monthly basis.
As per the data collected from Grama Niladari Divisions, the first step of the project was kept on the 19th
of July, 2016 by reaching a family in need living at Pepiliyana.

Leo Club of university of moratuwa

As creating new trends and paths to help others is the passion of UoM Leos, we came up with a new
project “Sigithi Muwata Hasarallak”. Although the main concept underlying this project is donating
reading materials to the libraries of Oba Mama Children Village, Aparakka and Keerthi Kumara Children
Home, Walpala, we tried to make it an unforgettable memory for the small ones of these two children’s
homes. For these little ones, going out on a trip and enjoying is a chance that they rarely get. Some of
them think that it is something impossible to achieve in their lonely lives. So to bring some light to their
gloomy lives we arranged an educational trip for them along with the book donation. Organizing a trip
for kids is not an easy task. We had to face so many challenges and barriers. Arranging the breakfast,
lunch, evening tea and also a daily insurance coverage for each child was some of the challenges we
faced. Despite all the challenges, we were able to make the event a success with the courage and deter-
mination of all the UoM Leos and the massive financial contribution from old Mora Leos.

Galle fort is a place that has a historical value and one of the world heritages that a lot of people tend to
visit. So we decided it would be the best place for the children to visit and learn the history of Sri Lanka
while having fun. We were able to teach them the history of the Dutch fortress and also we took them
to visit the Fort Marine Museum. After the breakfast we were able to take them to visit the museum
of the famous writer, Martin Wikramasinghe. After having the lunch there, we went to visit Koggala
Airport. These small ones were filled with excitement when they got the chance to explore the inside of
an aeroplane. In the evening we had a great time with these kids in the Galle beach and it was so blissful
to see their smiling faces filled with excitement and happiness they rarely get to experience. As all the
good things have to come to an end, this wonderful journey came to an end with the donation of library
materials. Seeing their departure brought us to tears of happiness because we were able to bring some
light for the gloomy lives of these little ones even for one single day and we are sure that it would be one
of the unforgettable memories in their lives.

Here’s what a new family member has to say!!!

Centennial Club President of Leo Club of SLTC shares his experiences and his ideas of the
journey yet started

Q. How did you get to know about Leoism and what made you to join

as a Leo?

A. One day when I was walking by I saw a notice on our board saying

that a new Leo club is going to be formed and in our campus there weren’t
any clubs that give us new opportunities to develop our skills. Most of us
were excited and we were waiting to see what will happen. As Engineering
Undergraduates we saw the lack of leadership qualities and personality issues
of normal graduates. We strongly believe that these kind of social activities
can make a difference about these matters. So we came to the orientation and
that’s how the concept of SLTC Leos started. Now we strongly believe that
Leo clubs are one of the best places to make that difference a reality.

Q. Tell in brief how the story unveiled about the 99 members at SLTC?
A. With the lead of our District President, the Orientation committee gave

us our first orientation about Lions clubs and Leo clubs. If I am to say the
truth, when we were introduced to Leoism, some of us even did not know
what a Lions club or a Leo club is and what the purposes of them are. The
1st orientation made a huge change in our minds and it was the first time we
grabbed the true vision and mission in the true name of service. At the 2nd
orientation, our club officers were appointed and we were taught about the meeting proceedings and how an installation should
be done and all. It was definitely a good experience for us, because I feel these are the things that we actually need to know as
these become very useful if we need to grow as engineers of mind and soul and not only with models and theories.
After all this, on the 2nd of October, Leo Club of SLTC was formed and installed with 99 club members. This 1st Milestone of
our Club was graced by District Governor, Lion Dr. Athula Hikkaduwa MJF JP as the Chief Guest and the Centennial District
President, Leo Kesari Senevirathne PMJF as the Guest of Honor. The President of our campus Mr. Ranjith Rubasingha joined as
the Special Guest of the occasion. On that day, the presence of Lions of Lions club of Polgasowita, Lions and Lion ladies of Lions
District 306 A2 and our beloved Leos of Leo district 306 A2 added much more value and much more strength to us on our 1st
Installation. Their presence actually assured and gave confidence that are we not alone in this long journey that we just started.

Q. What do u feel about being the first, Charter Centennial Club President of SLTC?
A. It is a great honor and a privilege to be the Charter Centennial Club President of Leo Club of Sri Lanka Technological Campus.

When I was elected as the Club President I knew that this is going to be one of the biggest challenges and one of the biggest
responsibilities that I have to accept. But now I see that challenge as a huge opportunity and I am humbly proud to be the leading
figure of the Leo Club with the most number of members in Leo District 306 A2. I would like to thank all my club members and
specially my Secretary Leo Raseema Sugandi and Treasurer Leo Chathurya Jayalath for placing their faith on me and supporting me.
I also like to thank Leo District 306 A2 for their continuous guidance and support for our work.

Q. If you’re to mention the Experiences u have gained or the Lessons learnt so far by engaging with the District and other Leo

Clubs what do u have to say?

A. Before our installation, myself and our Assistant Secretary Leo Eshan Udana had the opportunity to participate for the Leo

Presidents’ Camp 2016. We had wonderful experiences there. We met new friends, learnt a lot about leadership and how to
interact with people. It was definitely one of the best experiences so far. We visited some Leo clubs in our district for their projects
and also Club installations. Through those we got to know about how projects should be done and how an installation goes. As
SLTC Leos, we also have conducted some projects by ourselves and joined projects with Leo clubs in our District. Each and every
time we organize a project, we add a new lesson to our lives.

16 OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER | lEO DISTRICT 306 A2

From the start and until now, till this point this article is written, we have met
many new Leo friends for our lives, we have learnt a lot for our lives, we
have got many Experiences for our lives, we have got many Opportunities
for our lives. All what I have to say is we have felt the meaning of the word
LEO as it is. Specially I have to mention the opportunity that we got as
Leo volunteers in the Lions ISAAME Forum 2016 was truly remarkable.
That experience we got by working with Local and International Lion
Delegates, Past and Present Governors is truly one of the greatest memories
that we will cherish forever.

Q. What do u feel about your new family (A2 Leos)?
A. By the exact meaning of the word ‘Family’ I can assure that A2 is a big

Family with a big heart. From the first day, when we had the orientation, and
through all the projects we participated, no matter whether it is a district project
or a club project, all the Leos of 306 A2 never let us feel as new comers or
strangers. We have seen the unity and love between each other and you have given us the same without any difference. We are glad
and proud to say that we are a part of A2 family.

Q. Even though SLTC Leos are few months old, I’m sure there must be many to thank for the journey you have come so far…
A. Yes definitely. I have to thank our Leo Advisor Lion Noel Palliyaguru for making all the arrangements to bring a new Leo club

to our campus and giving us this wonderful opportunity and I am proud that he will be remembered as the founder of our SLTC Leo
family. I also have to thank our Campus Administration, specially our President Mr. Ranjith Rubasingha, Vice President Dr. Ashoka
Polpitiya and Assistant Registrar Ms. Pabasara Amarawardena, Dr. Udesh Oruthota, Dr. Chandana Perera for their continuous support
for our club. Well, a special thank goes to Lions Club of Polgasowita for being our parent and hosting our club. We would like to
thank District Governor Lion Dr. Athula Hikkaduwa MJF JP, Chief Advisor for Leos PDG Lion Kamal Senevirathne PMJF and all
the Lions who helped us and inspired us.
Last but not the least, I would like to mention the District President of Leo District 306 A2 Leo Kesari Senevirathne PMJF, Leo
Kasun Lokugamage and the Orientation Committee, the District Council members and all the Leos of 306 A2 who helped us and
made us one of your family. We look forward to work with all of you and hoping to have your continuous support and guidance.
Just as you serve our district and our country, We, Leos of Sri Lanka Technological Campus are willing to serve them with all our
