American Heart Month
February marks the national celebration of American Heart Month, when the American Heart
Association shines its torch on the No. 1 killer of all Americans - heart disease. While heart disease
is a risk for all Americans, it’s no secret that women are at a greater risk. In fact, an estimated
43 million women in the U.S. are affected by heart disease. Over the past decade, Go Red For
Women has made remarkable progress by fighting for equal health opportunities for women.
Go Red supporters proudly wear red, share stories of survival and advocate for more research
and swifter action for women’s heart and brain health. American Heart Month is an ideal time to
remind Americans to focus on their hearts and encourage them to get their families, friends and
communities involved.
American Heart Month officially kicked off on National Wear Red Day on Friday, February 3, 2018.
There were events across the nation to help raise funds to support awareness, education and
advocacy efforts in the fight against cardiovascular diseases. Houston media, companies and
individuals showed up loud and proud wearing their brightest red and displaying their support of
the AHA’s mission to put an end to heart disease and stroke.

Go Red For Women Luncheon
Hearts united at the American Heart Association’s Houston Go Red For Women Luncheon
on Friday, May 18 at The Post Oak Hotel at Uptown Houston. The 14th annual event –
under the leadership of Co-Chairs Rachel Clingman and Roberta Schwartz - celebrated
the power of women uniting and sharing their stories with one another. With the help of
ABC13’s Gina Gaston and Katherine Whaley, Rachel and Roberta hosted an unforgettable
afternoon that inspired a record-breaking number of 600 guests to honor the heart health
of women in their lives and raised more than $1.9M in the fight against heart disease and
stroke. Two Circle of Red members, Regay Hildreth and Temika Jones, shared their personal
stories of resilience and survival.
Author and fellow heart survivor, Alison Levine, was this year’s guest of honor and keynote
speaker. Through sharing her own health journey and lessons in leadership, Levine inspired
guests to take ownership of their health and become their own best advocate.

Alison Levine Keynote Speaker
First American Women’s Everest Expedition Alison Levine is a history-making polar explorer and
Team Captain & Author of the New York Times mountaineer. She served as team captain of the first
best-seller “On the Edge: Leadership Lessons American Women’s Everest Expedition, climbed the highest
from Everest and Other Extreme Environments” peak on each continent and skied to both the North and
South Poles–a feat known as the Adventure Grand Slam,
which fewer than forty people in the world have achieved.
In January 2008, she made history as the first American
to complete a 600-mile traverse from west Antarctica to
the South Pole, following the route of legendary explorer
Reinhold Messner. Levine completed this arduous journey on
skis while hauling 150 pounds of her gear and supplies in a
sled harnessed to her waist. She made history once again in
2016 when she completed the first ascent of Antarctica’s Hall
Peak. Her success in extreme environments is noteworthy,
given she has had three heart surgeries and suffers from
Raynaud’s disease, which causes the arteries that feed her
fingers and toes to collapse in cold weather–leaving her at
extreme risk for frostbite.

Luncheon Overview
Prior to the program, guests shopped, enjoyed makeup touch-ups by Macy’s, got moving
with SoulCycle, participated in blood pressure screenings with Houston Methodist Hospital,
learned the signs and symptoms of a stroke, and commemorated the day with a Go Red
selfie at the photobooth.
Additionally, guests learned hands-only CPR through one of AHA’s newest innovations, the
CPR kiosk. The CPR kiosk is a cutting- edge tool that teaches hands-only CPR with video
instructions and feedback. During the luncheon program, it was revealed that two generous
Go Red families provided funding to bring this lifesaving tool to Houston. Approximately 90%
of victims who experience cardiac arrest outside of a hospital do not survive. Hands only CPR
can double or triple chances of survival in the event of a cardiac arrest. This CPR kiosk will
train and equip more lifesavers in the community.

Survivors Spotlight
Regay Hildreth Temika Jones
Temika Jones and Regay Hildreth are wives, mothers and businesswomen – but their stories
of survival will inspire us all. Through their eyes, we learned what can happen when two or

More than 40 survivors of all ages, ethnicities, and backgrounds joined Temika and Regay
on stage in a powerful moment that showed how heart conditions and stroke can affect
anyone. These strong and courageous women have been victims of heart attacks, strokes,
congenital heart defects, and heart disease.

Vestido Rojo
Latinas united in heart and spirit at American Heart Association’s Vestido Rojo, an annual
health and wellness symposium created to address the disparity of health education
and awareness among Hispanic communities. More than 550 women attended the vent.
Guests enjoyed healthy bites, shopping, dancing, and heard from medical experts on the
importance of knowing your numbers and family history. Featured speakers included
Rocio A. Harbison, M.D., Endocrinologist, who spoke about diabetes and cholesterol, and
Dr. Carmen Landrau, M.D., Cardiologist, who spoke about blood pressure. Heart warrior,
Litzy Areli Hernández at the age 8, shared her personal story on the impact AHA research has
made on her life. A tribute video displayed at the event illustrated the 12 years of Vestido
Rojo in the Houston community. Special thank you to the event sponsors, Texas Medical
Center, Wells Fargo, and Goya, for supporting the AHA’s mission.
During the event, 456 health screenings were provided by 6 local providers, 126 attendees
enrolled in Check. Change. Control - AHA’s hypertension management system, and 56
attendees joined AHA’s advocacy efforts.
As gatekeepers of family health, Latinas play an important role in the fight against heart
disease. The Go Red For Women movement celebrates the energy, passion and power of
women to unite against the number one killer of women and become a beacon of change
within their families and communities.

21
Go Red Girlfriend
More than 250 women joined in the fight against cardiovascular diseases at the Go Red
Girlfriend health symposium. An estimated 44 million women in the U.S. are affected by heart
disease and stroke – the No.1 and No.5 killers of all women. In fact, 90 percent of all women
have one or more risk factors for cardiovascular diseases and stroke. African-American
women, however, are at a greater risk for cardiovascular disease than Caucasians and are
less aware of their risk factors. The American Heart Association is working hard to change
that statistic with events like Go Red Girlfriend. The 2018 event was held at Fountain of Life
Center and featured heart-healthy cooking demonstrations, health screenings, dancing, a
Q&A session with medical experts, survivor testimonials and live entertainment.

23
Circle of Red Soiree
The 2017 Go Red For Women Chairs Vicki and John Crum opened their home
to Circle of Red members to thank them for their support and to kick off the
2018 campaign. Being just weeks after Hurricane Harvey, people reconnected,
shared their stories and made sure everyone was recovering.
24
Circle of Red Fashion Show
The Circle of Red hosted an exclusive, invitation-only fall fashion event at Elizabeth Anthony
in Uptown Park Houston, benefiting the American Heart Association. Guests heard from Nicki
James Petrelli, who shared her story about being a stroke survivor. Guests also enjoyed lite bites
and bubbly while being treated to a sneak peek of the season’s latest trends. The packed
house buzzed with excitement as a select few Circle of Red ladies strutted their stuff down the
runway wearing Talbot Runhof 2018 collection.

'Go Red' and support the American Heart Association and its fight against cardiovascular disease.
Thursday, March 01, 2018
HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Someone dies from heart disease, stroke or another cardiovascular disease every 43 seconds in this country.
The American Heart Association's Go Red For Women movement is the world's largest network standing together to end heart disease
and stroke in women.
For more than a decade, AHA has led the fight to protect women's hearts through research and education.
You can support the initiative by asking women and men in your life to Go Red by supporting the American Heart Association at one of
their community luncheons.
Your support will help fund innovative research for new treatments, provide programs and services for survivors and their families and
help more of our loved ones lower their risk.
It's also a chance to come by and say hi to our ABC13 anchors who will emcee these wonderful events. For more information about the
American Heart Association, click here: www.heart.org

Community Education
Reaching Out to Houstonians
More than 15,000 Houston residents participated in multicultural
programs, including lunch and learns, personalized events,
and cooking demonstrations for better brain and heart
health. Through a National Strategic Partnership with Alpha
Kappa Alpha, the AHA had the opportunity to facilitate
blood pressure screenings, CPR trainings, and share relevant
information at the Alpha Kappa Alpha 68th Annual Boule
which welcomed over 20,000 women to the City of Houston.
More than 204 attendees learned their numbers by checking
their blood pressure.
Kids Are the Future
More than 656,000 kids got jumping and moving in 415 Houston-
area schools last year by participating in AHA programs and
curriculum like Jump Rope for Heart. Jump Rope for Heart
is a national education and fundraising event that engages
elementary and middle school students with jumping rope while
empowering them to improve their health and help other kids
with heart-health issues.
Teaching Lifesaving Skills
More than 158,000 adults and teenagers have been trained with
AHA guidelines, methods and materials in CPR, AED, and basic
lifesaving skills. The American Heart Association believes kids are
the answer to saving more lives. Each year, the AHA and skilled
instructors train thousands of people – including first responders,
medical professionals, and people just like you – to perform CPR
and other life-saving techniques. CPR kiosks at airports also provide
rapid training and instant feedback for those who want to learn or
brush up on their skills.
Check. Change. Control.
Hypertension, or high blood pressure, is the single most significant
risk factor for heart disease. It is often called “the silent killer”
because it has no symptoms. Today, nearly half of American
adults are at risk of major health problems because of high blood
pressure. The American Heart Association’s Check. Change.
Control. hypertension management program is designed to
educate and empower individuals to take action to self-manage
their blood pressure. Currently, there are nearly 14,000 participants
enrolled in the Check. Change. Control. program.
