His services are very great to the Johor State Government, including:
i. 1866: Accompanied Sultan Abu Bakar on his first visit to
Europe.
ii. 1904: Appointed as a regent and welcoming Play Arthur of
Connaught, who came to Malaya.
iii. 1910: Together with Datuk Seri Amar Diraja opposed the
British desire to control the Johor government. His bold action

PENYANDANG KEMUDIAN
DATUK MOHAMED MAHBOB

17

British officials in the Straits
Settlements based in

Singapore regard Datuk
Jaafar as a firm straight
forward man. Datuk Jaafar
together with Datuk Sri Amar
Diraja opposed the British
ambition to conquer the
state of Johor so that there
was a slight rift in relations
with the Sultan. In fact, the
Sultan of Johor wanted to
receive an advisor or General
adviser in 1910 because if
the Secretary of State fell ill,
no one else would advise

him.

18

CLOSING
We as Malaysians, should be amazed, proud and
appreciate the services and contributions of the
previous and current Menteri Besar where we can

feel the comfort of living as Malaysians in this
sovereign country.
