Malcolm Joseph Phillips, Sr. was born in New Orleans, Louisiana on
Saturday, September 12, 1931 to Thomas O. Phillips and Nellie
Mathieu Phillips. He had 7 brothers and 4 sisters: Enola P.
DeLille, Marie P. Broussard , Frances P. Henderson, Donald Phillips,
Alvarez Phillips, Warren Phillips, Thomas Phillips Jr., Larry Phillips,
Ronald Phillips and Darryl Phillips. He and his sister Frances were very
close and loved each other under a divine connection.
Malcolm spent his formative years attending All Saints Catholic
School in Algiers and Xavier Prep High School in New Orleans, Louisi-
ana. He served as an altar boy at All Saints Catholic Church where he
developed character, faithfulness and integrity. These traits would
become a foundation of life for Malcolm and followed him to his
natural rest.
At the age of 19 Malcolm would meet the love of his life, Louise also
known as “Mama”. Louise firmly remembers them meeting after-
school at a bakery shop where he bought her a Butter Finger candy
bar. He wanted to meet her family and he insisted that she meet his.
So . . . they began dating.
After high school, Malcolm joined the United States Marine Corps
which brought him to California. He was stationed in San Diego and
completed his tour of duty with honorable discharge. At this point
he went on to start the next phase in his life which included marrying
the lovely Louise and working for American Concrete Products.
It was on Sunday, November 27, 1955 at Ascension Catholic Church
that Malcolm and Louise Phillips became one, and the rest is history.
For Malcolm, family was always first, and soon he and Louise began
to build a family of their own with four amazing children: Rhonda
(August 6, 1957), Malcolm Jr. (June 22, 1962), Thomas (September
16, 1965)and Kristy (January 20, 1975).
Malcolm was a true man’s man and when his mind was made up,
there was no changing it. He was determined to give his children
stability and his best, even if it meant sacrificing himself. This is why
when his job relocated after the Watts Riots, he refused to relocate
his family. Instead, he made a decision to take a bus almost 2hrs to
work daily just so they could maintain a consistent lifestyle and
continue to attend private school.
Malcolm proved he was a great father and an even greater husband.
And still, he found the time to make an earnest effort and look out
for the children of the community as well. He coached his son’s
youth baseball and football teams at the park and was known as the
“Dad on the block.” He had a servants heart that never judged you,
but one that loved openly. He never hesitated to let you know it
would be alright with his “ohhhhh my goodness.”
Malcolm commuted to work faithfully for 40 years until he retired
and moved to Rancho Cucamonga, California. For 42 years he lived in
Los Angeles and spent the last 18 years in the Inland Empire. It is
here that he began to attend Ontario Christian Center and grow
deeper into the Word of God. Malcolm’s everyday actions proved he
lived out biblical principles.
On Tuesday, June 14, 2016 in Rancho Cucamonga, California,
Malcolm went home to be with the Lord. Malcolm loved life and he
loved people. He truly fought the good fight of faith and was able to
finish God’s plan for him on earth.
He left his family with these words:
“I love you, I now must fly away.”
Malcolm is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Louise R. Phillips
“Mama.” Four children: Rhonda Marie Phillips, Malcolm Joseph
(Jo-Jo) (Cherri Lynn) Phillips, Thomas Gerard Phillips, and Kristy Joy
(Darryl) Heisser. An array of grandchildren: Saraj, Kristina, Brittany,
Jayla, Kennedy, Thomas (T.J.), Jordyn, Arsena, Ja’Niquie and Jerard.
Five great grandchildren, one sister, Frances Phillips (Albert)
Henderson, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
We truly know Papa is absent from the body and present with the
Lord (2 Corinthians 5:8). He was not just a Christian man, but He was
a real man of God.
Time with family is worth every second.
It is where life begins, and love never ends.
And like branches on a tree,
We grow in different directions,
Yet are roots remain as one.

HOW HE MADE YOU FEEL
Most important person in the world.
No Pressure.
Respected.
Accepted and loved.
On the behalf of the Phillips family we would like to extend our
gratitude of thanks for your love and support during this test of
faith. Our father fought the good fight of faith and we were
blessed to spend his final moments with him together as family.
We appreciate all of the cards, flowers, phone calls and home
visits. We appreciate all of the prayers and agreement for the
peace of God to remain on each and every one of us, especially
our mother.
We appreciate all of you who came from near and far to fellowship
with us in this celebration of life. Together, in faith, we proved we
can do great things together in the body of Christ.
Praise God that Papa was saved and we will all see him again.
We love you and thank you again for your partnership of love
during this time.

“Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in
God, believe also in Me. In My Father’s house
are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have
told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I
go and prepare a place for you, I will come again
and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there
you may be also. “ - John 14:1-3
