Food Waste
Collections

JWS Waste offer a sustainable solution for food waste disposal.

We pride ourselves on providing an ecological solution for even the most
difficult of waste streams, including food waste. North West trade customers
can receive an efficient, high standard food waste collection and disposal
service that will improve their business’ environmental impact.

Similarly to our trade collections, food waste is collected from customer’s
Wheelaway containers in a weekly, scheduled service. These vehicles are
routed for the most effective carbon saving results. Food Waste Collections
are suitable for all customers who produce food waste.

Ecological Food Waste Collections help save your business money by
diverting from landfill in favour of a more ecological disposal. This also
lessens the risk of contamination in containers used for other waste streams
such as cardboard or paper.

Food Waste as a resource:

Anaerobic Digestion is a process that ensures food waste can be used as a
resource. Through a pasteurisation treatment, food waste can be used to produce
a bio fertiliser. Food waste is also stored, and the gasses are used to generate
electricity and provide industrial/commercial district heating.

Arrival at JWS Waste

Commercial &
Industrial Waste

What is C&I Waste?

The Commercial & Industrial (C&I) waste that
arrives into the JWS Waste facility mostly
consists of black bin bag waste material with
very little recovery value e.g. contaminated
material and organics. This waste is mostly
accumulated through our trade waste
collections.

Commercial & Industrial waste is tipped in JWS Waste deliver between 6-9

highly effective ecological solution for the
disposal of non-recyclable waste.

Construction and Construction &
Demolition waste is Demolition Waste
typically accumulated from
our Skip and Rolonoff
Services, and also from
Third Party Tipping.

When Construction and Demolition (C&D) Waste arrives as our
recycling facility, it is fed onto a conveyor which passes over a magnet
for ferrous metal recovery.

The fines material goes through a screen and passes through an air
blower to remove any light contamination, before being fed into the
soil bays.

The remaining material is fed up the sorting line where we pick paper,
cardboard, plastic, wood and non-ferrous materials.

By the end of the process
we have stockpiles of
aggregate, wood, metal,
and soils. Plastics, paper,
and cardboard is baled on
site before the materials
can all be disposed of via
the most appropriate
disposal outlet.

Arrival at JWS Waste

WByetheighbridge

When waste arrives at our recycling
facility, it is weighed in over JWS
Waste’s weighbridge. All vehicles,
requested to tare in and out, must
stop at our weighbridge and report to
the Weighbridge Operator. All vehicles
are weighed in and logged onto JWS
Waste’s System.

The Weighbridge operator will then
direct the vehicle and ensure that all
drivers and passengers entering the
site are aware of the JWS Waste Site

they are wearing the appropriate

Tipping
Third Party Customers are permitted
to tip their waste at JWS Waste’s
facility however it is imperative that
all customers who want to tip at our
site own a Waste Carriers License as a
legal requirement.

Once the customer has visited the weighbridge, the operator informs the
Banksman of the waste description. The Banksman then directs the driver to the
relevant area to tip their waste. After the waste has been tipped, the Banksman
inspects the waste for any hazardous or non-conforming waste materials.

Hazardous Waste Materials

Any hazardous waste materials that are
identified are immediately quarantined
and segregated from the waste and the
correct disposal route is arranged.
Depending on the hazardous nature of
the waste, our QEHS Advisor will fully
investigate and work with the customer
to implement measures to ensure that
re-occurring contamination is reduced.

Non-conforming Waste

Non-conforming waste that does
not present a great health and
safety or environmental risk will
be relayed to the weighbridge
operator so that the customer
can be informed. Our Banksman
takes photographs of the waste
materials to provide evidence of
the non0-conforming waste
material for customers who
require evidence.

What happens to the Waste

Disposal
Outlets

Here at JWS Waste our aim is to recycle/recover over 95% of the waste processed at
our recycling facility. Any waste that is not suitable for recycling is treated and
processed into a Refused Derived Fuel (RDF) to be used as an energy resource. All
recovered waste undergoes further processing to allow for JWS Waste to
appropriately dispose of the specific waste streams.

Quarantines/Hazardous Waste

Moth quarantined hazardous wastes are sent to licensed treatment sites that have
the facility to treat hazardous wastes. Asbestos is an exception to this as any
materials containing asbestos is taken directly to landfill due to its hazardous
properties.

Quarantined waste materials sent on for recycling include:

Car Batteries: sent to local scrapyards.
Gas Bottles: sent to a local company for reprocessing.
Fire Extinguishers: de-gassed by local company and sent to local scrap yards.
Types: sent to a local tyre recycling company if height is <1 metre, or to landfill.
Fridges: de-gassed to extract the CFC’s and sent to scrap yards.
WEEE: if intact, sent to a local recycling firm for re-processing.
Oil: cleaned and filtered by local company, then used for energy production.

What happens to the Waste

Energy from JWS Waste’s key focus is to deliver the
Waste latest in recycling innovations and
solutions for our clients. Our MRF
delivers in excess of 97% recovery of
the overall input and is diverted to
either resource recovery or energy
production (RDF).

Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) or solid
recovered fuel/specified recovered
fuel (SRF) is a fuel produced by
shredding and dehydrating solid
waste (MSW) with a waste
converter technology. RDF
consists largely of combustible
components of municipal waste
such as plastics and
biodegradable waste.

Ensuring that our residual waste is
diverted from landfill gives our
customers’ peace of mind that
choosing to facilitate their waste at
JWS Waste allows them to meet
their environmental targets and
objectives. This is also supported
by the deliverance of the highest
CO2 savings.

JWS Waste treat our customers waste to produce RDF that is then
transported to Runcorn Energy from Waste, a Combined Heat & Power (CHP)
facility. The facility treats up to 850,000 tonnes of RDF each year, and it
generates up to 70MW of electricity and up to 51MW of heat for exclusive use
by INEOS ChlorVinyls.

By reducing the amount of waste sent to landfill and using it as a resource from
which to recover energy, the Runcorn facility helps reduce the UK’s reliance on
fossil fuels, improve sustainability and achieve significant reductions in
greenhouse gas emissions, which in turn will reduce the UK’s carbon footprint.

The Energy from Waste Process:

Compliance

Ineos operates a full site license permitted by the Environmental Agency and
is licensed to accept up to 850,000 tonnes of waste every year.
The facility has been issued with an Environmental Permit in order to
operate. Compliance with the conditions of the Permit is monitored by the
Environmental Agency and this ensures full compliance with the
requirements of all necessary standards protecting health and the
environment.
