The Importance of Occupational Health

What Are Safety Critical Worker Medicals? (Fit For Work Medicals)

Fit For Work medicals are in-depth medicals designed to ensure

anyone who may be undertaking safety-critical tasks is fit to do so.

Why Do You Need Fit For Work Medicals?

The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, states that under current
health and safety legislation, employers have a duty of care to prevent
the ill-health of their workers. This is particularly relevant to those

carrying out so-called safety-critical tasks. These are becoming more
compulsory in the traffic management industry, same as CSCS. If you
don’t have this qualification you’re going to struggle to get on certain

sites.

It is important that safety-critical workers are not suffering from
medical conditions or undergoing any medical treatment which is likely

to cause sudden loss of consciousness or incapacity, impairment of
awareness, concentration, balance or coordination or significant
limitation of mobility.

What is Safety-Critical Work?

The term ‘safety critical work’ is defined as any work:

“Where the ill health of an individual may compromise their ability to

undertake a task defined as safety-critical, thereby posing a significant
risk to the health and safety of others.”

This Month’s Corporate Social Responsibility was…. Sweet!

As part of our on-going commitment to CSR we teamed up with Make-A-Wish foundation by
offering some goodies to our team and donating a pound every time a
bag was purchased. This was a great way to raise money whilst munching!
Make-a-wish was more the grateful, and even thanked us on Facebook!
We look to do more with charities like this in the future, and recently
we’ve been looking in to events with Bluebell Wood…so stay tuned!

Highways England hits back at Stonehenge tunnel critics

Highways England has labelled claims
of irreparable damage at Stonehenge
as “alarmist” and “untrue” after
archaeologists warned that tunneling
under the monument could destroy the
site.

Stonehenge Alliance – a group of
archaeological and environmental
campaigners including Campaign for
Better Transport and Friends of the
Earth – said the £1.6bn A303 upgrade
plan, which includes a 2.9km twin-
bored tunnel, would “destroy
important archaeology” at the World
Heritage Site.

But Highways England project manager for the A303 Stonehenge scheme David Bullock has hit back,
labelling the comments as “alarmist”.

“The suggestion that Highways England’s survey work will destroy layers of archaeology is alarmist and
untrue,” he said.

“No work has been carried out during unsuitable conditions – the recent wet weather has resulted in the
plant operations being stood down at times to avoid any risk to archaeology.

”The works are being undertaken in a highly professional manner with due care being exercised at all
times. No destruction of archaeological layers has occurred.”

Bullock added: “The tunnel/tunnelling will cause no damage to Stonehenge itself or any other surface
features within the World Heritage Site, and in terms of construction, all efforts will be made to minimise
disruption and impact.

“The preferred route has been carefully chosen to avoid monuments and barrow groups, and our modified
plans also included moving the position of the western entrance to the tunnel to avoid conflicting with the
Winter Solstice alignment.”

The Stonehenge Alliance claims that a planned western entrance to the tunnel would partly destroy an
ancient Beaker burial cemetery, as well as several Neolithic longbarrows. Its comments came in the
alliance’s submission to Highways England’s consultation, which closed yesterday (23 April).
