Dear Collector

Sometimes an item comes up for auction which surprises us all. It may not
always be the most expensive lot in the sale, but rather something that
attracts attention because of its rarity or provenance. We are fortunate to
have two lots in this sale which have just that, the two watercolours by
Lady Anne Barnard which will be offered in the evening session along with a
letter written by her. These are both rare and unusual. An enormous amount
of research has been done by Carol Kaufmann and cultural historian
Tracey Randle around the watercolours, and the article in the catalogue will
give some insight into Lady Anne Barnard and the two works on the sale.

Anton van Wouw’s Shangaan is another lot sure to attract attention, and
we are most grateful to Gerard de Kamper for his writing and information
surrounding the date of casting. Van Wouw used both the Nissini and
Massa foundries to cast his work, but Massa was used from around 1936,
after Nissini had closed. Purchased some twenty years ago, it has now
come back on to the market. Also in the evening session are two works
by Gerard Sekoto and the Head of an African Woman is another work
that has not been on the market for almost two decades. Irma Stern is
represented by a gouache completed during her time in Zanzibar and
Carol Kaufmann has written extensively on the work.

Jewellery is highlighted by a gold and enamel serpent bracelet,
a particularly beautiful object which is sure to attract a lot of attention.
Another large Esias Bosch tile heads up the decorative arts department,
an especially attractive work which is a fine example of his talent.
A Cape armoire is juxtaposed with some mid-century furniture,
perhaps a good example of how the old can work with the new.

We have also entered a new phase at Stephan Welz as we are
under new ownership, a change that I am sure will bring a breath
of fresh air and new beginnings.

Watch our website, Instagram, Facebook and your inbox for news
as we begin the next phase in the life of the company.

See you in the saleroom.
