I

This work, painted on both recto and verso, was presented by Maggie Laubser to the owner’s grandpar-
ents as a wedding gift on 22 February 1933 in the town of Philadelphia, near Malmesbury, in the Western
Cape, and has remained unseen by the open market until now. Laubser, who had returned from Europe in
November 1924, had begun to explore the influence of Expressionism upon her work, and to apply it to the
South African context in which she found herself.

Regarding a very similar work, Still Life With Poinsettias On A Round Table (University of Stellenbosch col-
lection), Professor Ballot has noted the “conscious striving for a stylised expressiveness” that can be seen
in this work is similarly present in the work offered here. This work could be seen as a study towards the
previously mentioned work, with minor differences such as the slight shift in composition and variations in
palette with the greens and blues richer and brighter and the starkness of the previously mentioned work
softened, and was most likely executed in the same year (1924).

Ballot has said that “(I)n this vibrant representation the expressively loaded linear qualities are support-
ed by, and contrasted with, the lively play of mainly primary colours, applied solidly: curved planes of
red, green and blue, along with touches of ochre, produce – surprisingly enough – an unaffected visual
pleasure that at the same time also contributes towards suggesting similar emotional experience. In this
way the stylisation, that is to say the simplification of form, along with the associated decorative stimuli,
achieves a “perfect balance”, even beyond the viewer’s literal field of vision” This work builds towards
achieving the “perfect balance” of the Still Life With Poinsettias described by Ballot in his publication on
the artist’s life.

II

On the reverse of Still Life With Poinsettias there is a Study For A Still Life with Tulips that was not known
to be present, even to the owners, until the work was taken to Schweikert’s in Pretoria in 1975 for refram-
ing. This study appears to feature the same vase and curved table as used in the recto. Unfinished areas of
exposed board are present and other areas are unfortunately blemished with framer’s notations in pencil
due to their belief that this painting was of little to no consequence. The unfinished state, the unsigned
nature, and the fact that it was disguised in its original frame suggests that Laubser did not feel this com-
position to have the power and success of the Poinsettias, but it does remain fascinating to see the artist’s
mind at work as she strove for Ballot’s aforementioned “perfect balance” in her still life composition and
resettled back into South African life.

The Submariner-Date is a handsome watch
for business and social wear, yet remains, first
and foremost a diver’s watch. The automatic
movement with a Perpetual rotor has obtained
the official title of Swiss chronometer. It is
housed in the famous Oystercase.

The Triplock crown, a triple safety device,
is protected against accidents by seamless
shoulders cut in solid metal. The date changes
at midnight and can be rapidly adjusted. The
bracelet has extension links so that it can be
worn over a light diving suit and is secured
by a Fliplock safety clasp. A tough sapphire
crystal remains scratch resistant under the
most arduous conditions. The Submariner-Date
by Rolex is available in stainless steel and is
guaranteed waterproof to a depth of 300m
(1000 feet).

The revolving bezel incorporates a ratchet
and can only be turned anti-clock wise. It
is equipped with a Fliplock bracelet. This
particular watch comes with the original box
and part-papers c. 1980.

Until the late 1980s the bracelets that we now describe as
‘tennis bracelets’ were simply beautiful, flexible diamond
bracelets, sometimes referred to as ‘eternity bracelets’,
particularly in the 1920s where they were often worn by both
men and women.
This changed during the 1987 US Open when woman’s
champion Chris Evert Lloyd halted proceedings in front of
a large television audience to search for her bracelet which
had come undone and slipped from her wrist, refusing to
continue the match until her lucky bracelet was back on her
wrist. Evert had always referred to her bracelet as her ‘tennis
bracelet’ and this accident at the US Open sparked a new
desire in the watching audience for these timeless, elegant
bracelets that continues unabated today.
