2023 ANNUAL REPORT

A LETTER FROM OUR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR My name is Melanie Carroll, and 2023 was my first full year of privileged service as the Executive Director of Angel Flight South Central. When I came to Angel Flight South Central, I witnessed something very rare in today’s world - unwavering, selfless generosity. From the staff and Board to the volunteer pilots, Wing Leaders and donors, everyone works together to coordinate and execute thousands of free air transportation missions for humanitarian purposes. Nearly every individual in the United States knows and/or cares for someone impacted by cancer or some other life-threatening disease. However, many times the best treatment for the disease is far away. In many cases, the pain, discomfort, and cost of a long car ride with a compromised immune system negate the ability to travel by car or commercial airlines to seek treatment far away. Consequently, many are forced to forgo treatment that gives them the best outcome. Angel Flight South Central fills the need by enabling patients living in rural areas to get the best possible treatment, even if it is not in their local area, by coordinating the travel using private pilots. Pilots contribute their time, aircraft, and operating expenses to fly these patients at no cost to the patient so they can get the treatment they need. Angel Flight South Central coordinates all the logistics between volunteer pilots and the patients to make these trips possible. Angel Flight South Central is a very efficient and effective charity, with over 93% of all funds spent going to provide humanitarian air travel for patients and others needing this assistance. Our pilots donate all operating expenses to execute the flights while donors fund mission coordination, pilot recruitment and outreach. During 2023, our volunteer pilots bore the expense of over $5 million to accomplish 1,824 trips carrying over 4,500 passengers. Coordinating these flights is not an easy task. Because many trips are relatively long, about half the time, more than one pilot is involved in completing the trip; one pilot covers the first mission leg while another pilot covers the next mission leg in a relay format. Combined with weather iissues, pilot availability, changing times of doctor visits and timing of completion of treatment, our mission coordination team works hard to ensure the needs of our passengers are met; this last year, we were able to fulfill 81% of all the trips that patients wished to take. This mission fulfilment statistic has been a focus for Angel Flight South Central and has improved dramatically over the past several years. While we improved our mission completion performance during 2023, we also increased the number of mission legs by 41%, increased the number of trips by 37%, and our pilots flew over 648 thousand miles. Angel Flight South Central does more than just fly patients to get treatment. It flies Court Appointed Special Advocate (“CASA”) volunteers to visit foster children that have been relocated to ensure their wellbeing, it flies Doctors Without Borders to get to their volunteer locations, and it flies relief supplies after natural disasters occur. Anytime there is a transportation need for humanitarian purposes, Angel Flight South Central seeks to help fulfill the need. On behalf of the thousands of passengers served in 2023, I thank the pilots, the mission coordinators, the Board, and all our donors for making these flights possible. Our goal for 2024 is to continue to increase the number of trips we execute, all while maintaining the high level of reliability in getting our patients to their destinations. Blue skies and tailwinds. Melanie R. Carroll, CFRE Angel Flight South Central Executive Director HALF THE CURE IS GETTING THERE ®
