The Delta Variant of the Coronavirus is still working its way
around our state, so I encourage us all to take precautions to
stay healthy. Veterinarians are essential to a healthy state and
a healthy food supply and I appreciate all the work that has
been done by Oklahoma veterinarians to keep our clients and
patients healthy during this pandemic.

I would like to highlight the Pet Overpopulation Program
sponsored by the OVMA. As you know, this program works
to reduce the number of stray and unwanted animals in
Oklahoma. This in turn reduces human bites, euthanasia of
animals, starving animals, etc. In the fiscal year 20/21, we had

New Research
Keeping OSU
CVM at the Top

On May 3, the class of 2022 began their clinical year with everyone being in-person for each rotation. On May 14, Oklahoma
State University removed the mask mandate for faculty, staff, students and visitors.
The Institute for Translational and Emerging Research in Advanced Comparative Therapy
(INTERACT) will host its first research symposium on October 12 featuring Nobel Laureate
Dr. Bruce Beutler. In addition to Beutler’s keynote address, several faculty and students will
present their research. As the date nears, watch for details on how to view the live stream of
this event if you cannot attend in person.
New research studies recently funded include:
• Dr. Meredyth Jones, Veterinary Clinical Sciences, “Efficacy of experimental anthelmintic in

AVMA REPORT

Hello fellow OVMA members! The AVMA government relations team has
been busy with 3 key pieces of federal legislation:
1. Healthy Dog Importation Act – improved dog importation standards will
prevent introduction and spread of diseases impacting animal and human
health.
2. Veterinary Medicine Loan Repayment Program (VMLRP)
Enhancement Act – a 37% withholding tax on VMLRP awards
limits the program’s ability to address veterinary shortages
in rural and underserved communities. Passage of the
VMLRP enhancement act will exempt this service award
from withholding taxes. In turn, this act will help more rural
communities gain access to veterinary services.
3. Advancing Emergency Preparedness Through One Health
Act – one health is the idea that human, animals, and the
environment are inextricably linked. Now, more than ever,
legislation is needed to direct federal agencies to coordinate
One Health efforts and prevent, prepare for and respond to
zoonotic disease outbreaks.
Our July AVMA Convention held a virtual meeting, but the House of Delegates met in person in Chicago. One key presentation
by the AVMA staff was titled the Economic Dynamics in the US Veterinary Workforce. The AVMA staff is currently working
on an expanded article covering that topic which will be published in JAVMA and will include more information. I would
encourage all to take a look at that article which includes findings related to our workforce dilemmas during the pandemic.

Happy Fall,
