D’Alton Cup Success for Maghera

to win their third successive victory in the Oisin McGarth
A final with a comprehensive defeat of neighbours St
Mary’s, Magherafelt at MUSA. Goals win games and the
St Patrick’s boys grabbed 11 of them on final day as they
powered their way to a 11-12 to 2-7 victory on a beautiful
November afternoon. The College Year 8 student body
were also there as spectators and they certainly added
some tremendous colour, noise and excitement to the
day.
Maghera’s first attack in the opening minute yielded
the first of those goals and although play was relatively
even over the remainder of the first quarter the period
before half time saw the reigning champions put the
game out of reach for their neighbours. Steady and
disciplined defensive work gave a platform for some good
possession and hard support running had St Patrick’s 6-6
to 0-6 ahead at half-time and well on the path to victory.
Magherafelt did battle bravely in the second half but
just could not match the overall quality which our boys
had in so many positions across the field. Defensively
Maghera were sound throughout while their midfield and
forward six made excellent use of the ball and played as
a very cohesive unit. The flow and spread of scores was

significantly from the earlier rounds
and this was a much closer affair.

Stephen Quinn Memorial Shield Final
Stephen Quinn Shield Champions, 8Cr.
The annual Stephen Quinn Shield Final
at St Mary Building, in the Autumn term,
was one of the best and most exciting
finals of recent years in this special
College competition. With some fantastic
skills and tremendous commitment from
both teams the very noisily supportive
Year 8 cohort of pupils had plenty to
cheer about.
Underdogs 8Co made all the early
running with Cormac McCloskey,
Finbar Fleming in goals, Oisin Kearney
and Oisin McMullan all to the fore for
their team. 8Cr though grabbed two
crucial goals before the break and
turned over with a narrow lead. They
had top performers in Padraig Haran,

Donnach Colgan, Darach McGonigle and Cathal
McKaigue. The strong running of the Cr team would
deliver the important scores in the second half and
despite Co bagging three more goals it was Cr who
were crowned Stephen Quinn Champions for the
school year. Stephen's parents, Martina and Terence
presented medals, trophies and the coveted Stephen
Quinn Shield to the teams to complete an excellent
term of football.
The College would like to thank the Quinn family for
their unwavering support of the event and thanks
also to Mr William McAteer who organised and ran a
fantastic event. Well done to all who took part over
many lunch times in the past few weeks.

District Championships
The District Cross Country Championships presented
the athletics team with a much more wintry affair on the
snow covered pitches of Thornhill College. The mini
girls approached the start line with a steely determination
which stayed with them throughout the race in freezing
conditions. Eabha McElhinney and Eimhear Scott kept
pace with the lead pack throughout the race resulting
in their qualification for the Ulster Final. Overall the mini
girls placed fourth in the team competition missing out
on a medal and an Ulster qualification spot by only 3
points. The boy’s races followed with gutsy performances
from Danny Gallagher, Darach McGonigle, Fergal McGirr,
Caithar Murphy and Antain Donnelly. Antain’s strong surge
in the closing stages of the minor boys’ race secured him

MUSA Cross Country
The Mid Ulster Borough Council Cross Country took place
in MUSA in October over the now well-established mile
course. As in previous years the course started with a
steep hill which, as expected in Cross County, was at times
muddy underfoot, resulting in a few shoes being parted
from their owners. The Year 8s’ meet the challenge with
determination and team work, enabling Eabha McElhinney
to excel and place second in the U13 Girl's section. Antaín
Donnelly followed this with an extremely competitive run in
the U14 Boy’s race but unfortunately narrowly missed out
on a medal position in the last few strides of the race.

Joseph McAllister took part in the
Senior Boy’s 100m & 200m races, in
the District Championships held in
Antrim on a dull and damp May day.
Joseph’s first event of the afternoon
session was the 200m, after a few
tentative practice runs out of the
stadium starting blocks Joseph ran
a fantastic first 100m coming off the
bend in the mix for medals.
His composure and sprinting
technique held strong down the
home straight and he maintained his
position to claim bronze.
Joseph backed this excellent
performance up an hour later with
a superb run in the shorter distance
(100m) winning silver and another
qualification spot in the Ulster Finals
in Antrim.

Ulster Track & Field Championship Finals
Joseph McAlister had a busy day, qualifying for the 100m and 200m finals as a result of great runs in the morning heats. These
races were the highlight of a great day's athletics with the winner Aaron Sexton breaking the long standing Ulster School's
records in both events, which were previously set by Phil Snoddy 35 years ago in 1984. Joseph stepped up to the challenge well,
running personal bests in both finals, placing 5th in the 100m (11.65s) and 7th in the 200m (24.17s).

year group while Year 10 saw competition between classes
Bi, Cd and Cu. Using the same range of events which had
been used in the PE activity block these classes competed
in running, jumping and throwing events during the
respective Year group finals competitions in the battle to
be Top Class.
Some excellent individual performances were always
going to be an advantage with Year 9 seeing excellent
performances from Mary McNally, Sinead Mellon and
Michael Watters for their classes while top individual
performers in Year 10 included Lucy Kelly, Eoin Higgins and
Adam McLaughlin. These certainly contributed to team
scores and the two events finished off with some very
closely contested class relay races which helped propel
classes 9Ni and 10Bi to the top of the respective leader
boards in the overall class competitions. Congratulations
to these two classes and all those who made the finals day

Sports Day at St Mary Building, June 2018
The tremendous sunshine brought an excellent splash of colour to the
annual St Mary Building Sports Day. As ever the pupils took part with
tremendous enthusiasm and there was great excitement at the many
different events throughout the day. Races, jumps, throws and contests
of all sorts were preceded by the traditional fun activities to start the day
with the pupils joining in and helping generate an excellent atmosphere.
A very busy morning gave way to some excellent finals in the afternoon
with the 60M sprint for both boys and girls proving to be show stopping
races while the class relays brought a very close fought team battle again.
The legendary McAteer’s Masters team also, yet again, faced down all
challengers in their annual appearance with Maestro McAteer joined by
Mrs Griffin, newbie Miss McAleer and veteran Mr Lockhart as they cruised
to another 4x100m title. Miss Devlin organised and distributed medals to
the various event winners to complete an excellent day of sport, fun and
endless physical activity – well done to all.
