Introduction
Hi guys! As you all know everything and every place has history. It can be how you're
favorite toy came to be, why certain laws are made and still here, countries, cities,
and states. This book is about the civil rights movement and modern Georgia. As I
now know you guys are learning about Georgia history so some of this stuff you can
relate to your own studies. I will be talking about things such as Dr. Martin Luther
King Jr, the olympics, Jimmy Carter and many more things. I really hope that you
really enjoy my book.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr
Everybody knows who Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is. America even has a national
holiday after him. He has done many things for the civil rights movement. Started as
a pastor of a church in Montgomery,Alabama. In the next year he found himself as
the spokesperson of the Montgomery Bus Boycott. He was apart of the March in
Washington. He created the SCLC and his voter registration campaign in Selma. All
of these beautiful peaceful contributions all led to the civil rights movement. He
gave his famous “ I Have A Dream’’ speech during the March on Washington.
Jimmy Carter
Jimmy Carter has done a lot for the state of Georgia and America. Jimmy was first a senate
of Georgia. His pro-environment and integration stance created mixed views from
everyone. He also served for a second term as senate. Carter then decided to move to
governor. As governor he reorganized the state government. He improved the educational
system, justice and mental health systems. He gave women and minorities more
government positrons. Then came his presidency. He has his successes and failures. He
created SALT II which is Strategic Arms Limitation Treaty with the Soviet Union. The
hostage Iranian crisis. This is when 52 Americans were held hostage by Iranian students for
444 days. He did not do a good job with this.
Ivan Allen Jr
Ivan Allen jr is known as The Godfather of professional sports. Ivan Allen kept up
with the quote for Atlanta “the city too busy to hate”. On his first day of mayor he
took all the colored signs in the office. He also has worked with Martin Luther King
Jr. to help desegregation with businesses in Atlanta. Allen worked on transportation
such as Interstate 285 and M.A.R.T.A. His most impactful thing he did while in office
is bringing professional sports to Atlanta. Teams such as the Atlanta Hawks, Atlanta
Falcons and the Atlanta Braves. All these sports contributed to bringing the 1996
Olympic Games to Atlanta.
Immigration
With Atlanta and Georgia growing as a whole with population. This new wave of
people come from all different places. Much of this population being immigrants.
These immigrants have not only change how the cultural roots of Georgia but
making money for Georgia. Not working for a Georgia for building and construction
but small businesses and entrepreneurs. A lot of these small businesses include
restaurants, grocery stores and neighborhood shops. These small shops make good
money for the local community.
March on Washington
The March on Washington is a protest that a lot of things happened. Over 250,000
civil right activists gathered to push for civil rights. They also were protesting for
jobs and freedom. The well known Martin Luther King became the spokesperson for
this March. He also gave his famous I have a dream speech here. This March also
played a big part in the voting rights act of 1965 and the civil rights act of 1964.
Albany Movement
The Albany Movement came after the Montgomery Bus Boycott. SNCC decided to
protest against the segregation laws in Albany,Georgia. Martin Luther King was very
known for his successful peaceful protest actions so SNCC made him apart of it.
Chief Pritchett went against them in a very non-violent way. Even though many
were arrested some were immediately released like Martin Luther King Jr.
SCLC
SCLC stands for Southern Christian Leadership Conference. Created by Dr. Martin
Luther King, SCLC helped organize protests. SCLC came after the Albany
Movement. This group helps blacks and African Americans get opportunities
throughout the South. They filed lawsuits against the government for segregation in
cafes. Currently in 2019 they strive today to help with help care, prison reform, fair
treatment of refugees and job site safety.
SNCC
SNCC stands for Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. SNCC played an
important part in civil rights organizations. SNCC is made up of young adults and
teens of all races. They have planned famous sit-ins and freedom rides. SNCC then
moved on to Georgia trying to fix the segregation issues in Albany. They were
unsuccessful with this and the Albany Movement.
1996 Olympics
Atlanta was a growing new beautiful city. Had good stadiums and a perfect
candidate for the Olympics. The Olympics brought short terms and long term
changes to Georgia. One of the short term effects of the Olympics coming was that
all the trash and dirtiness of downtown was cleaned up. One of the long term effects
of the Olympics is that hotel rooms were needed and stadiums. Those rooms and
stadiums have gone to colleges. Georgia got a lot of attention from this and people
realized that Georgia was a good filming spot.
Andrew Young
Andrew Young served as congressman, ambassador of Georgia. Young was also
mayor of Atlanta in 1981. Andrew helped with SCLC. Andrew became the first black
congressman in Georgia since reconstruction in 1972. He was also appointed
ambassador by Jimmy Carter.
Maynard Jackson
Maynard Jackson was the first black mayor of Atlanta. He has served eight years as
mayor in Atlanta. In 1990 he returned for a third term. Maynard Jackson has also
worked with Ivan Allen Jr. During his time as Mayor he helped black rise in ranks and
help a string of murders against blacks.
Civil Rights Act of 1964
The mistreatment of minorities has finally came to an end. The civil rights movement
of 1964 was a law saying that discrimination against minorities was illegal in the
work force. You couldn’t fire somebody for the color of their skin. A lot of people
were not happy with this. Especially states in the south. This act was signed by
Lyndon B. Johnson.
Brown vs the board of education
Brown vs. the board of education is a case that will go down in history. In the 1950s,
segregation was everywhere. Schools, hotels, buses basically anything that you can
think of. Linda Brown was a black school girl who had to walk at least a mile to her
black segregated school. It was a problem because Linda had a school several blocks
from her house that was a all white school. She tried to attend the school but her
admission was not granted. They then took this to court because it was violating the
"separate but equal" law. Many more cases like this were happening until finally it
hit the supreme court. The supreme court ruled this illegal. Georgia was not happy
about this. Georgia then created the Sibley commission. This was a vote to self they
should keep resisting the law. 60% rather not go to school then be in a desegregated
classroom. Good thing Georgia didn’t take it seriously.
Lester Maddox
A lot of southern states such as Georgia did not like the civil rights act . They resisted
this law with physical violence and voting a A mayor who is for segregation. Lester
Maddox was known for his refusal to serve African-Americans or blacks or anyone
who is for integration in his Pickrick cafeteria near Georgia Tech. When Maddox
first ran office he was defeated by Ivan Allen and William Hartsfield. He then went
again and won against Ellis Arnall. He hired more African Americans in government
positions despite of his past with his cafe.
John Lewis
John Lewis was also a major player in the civil rights movement. He was the
chairman of SNCC. He also did a major speech in the 1963 march on Washington. In
1981 he was elected in the Atlanta City Council. In 1986 he was elected as U.S
congressman in the fifth congressional district. Currently still serving today.
