Early years

Dr. Lalit Kanodia was born in
1941 into a business family in

Kolkata.
He graduated from IIT- Bombay
and went abroad for his higher

studies. After his Masters
Degree in MIT, he came back
to India for a brief period and
met with JRD Tata who asked
him to study the feasibility of

computerization of the Tata
group.

In 1967, he setup Tata
Computer Center which is

known today as TCS.
After successfully guiding and
directing the company for about

8 years.

Entrepreneurial bug

Lalit was smitten by the
entrepreneurial bug as he could not

see himself as an employee.
Datamatics was setup in 1975 with
a staff strength of 10 operating out
of SBI building in Fort, Mumbai. It

initially offered services for Data
Processing and Payroll.

The day we hit big

In 1979 when Datamatics setup a
dedicated offshore development
center for WANG laboratories.
Wang Labs was fastest growing
computer company in USA. We tied
up with Wang and started selling

their computers in India.
Thereafter after they gave us a
break to develop an Arabic Word
Processing System. It was our first
software development assignment!
We successfully delivered it and
they were absolutely astounded..
Wang sold lot of their machines to
the Gulf countries and started
pushing their distributors to use

Datamatics for developing
softwares.

No lookingback

In 1991, Datamatics setup the
country’s first satellite link for
transfer of data between Mumbai
and USA for AT&T Bell Labs. This
facilitated the foundation of
Business Process Outsourcing

(BPO) services in India.
In 1992, Datamatics launched an E-

publishing company in India.
