This comes after an alarming spike in tragic deaths of Indian students in the United States was recorded in a span of 4-5 months, leading to raised concerns among the students, IndoAmerican community as well as Indian parents. FIIDS analyzed the causes of these incidents range and found that they range from suspicious shootings/kidnapping, environmental deaths due to lack of safety knowledge ( monoxide poisoning, hypothermia), mental issues triggering suicides, and even suspicious accidents to violent crimes. Dr. Lakshmi Thalanki, from Boston, who compiled reports of deaths of over ten students noted that “the sudden surge of deaths among Indian students are alarming and suspicious”. Khanderao Kand, FIIDS chief of policies and strategy said, “Indian origin students according to Open Doors Report (ODR) are around 275k making 25 percent of total foreign students and bringing in $9B per year in terms of fees an expenses. However, recent increase in their deaths is concerning and if not addressed, would impact their confidence on safety in the US universities impacting the inflow of students. ” In its report, the organization has issued a set of recommendations to the Department of State, Department of Justice, Education Department, Universities, student organizations as well as Indo-American community to prevent such cases. The main recommendations include: • Enhancing safety education by providing foreign students comprehensive safety education programs to be aware of the potential climate or locality related risks • Improving search and rescue procedures that can help to reduce response times during emergencies or accidents • Implementing stricter rules against fraternity ragging that cause serious risks to students’ physical and mental health, leading to accidents, injuries, and trauma • Providing culturally sensitive mental health support to foreign students, particularly those facing isolation or cultural adjustment challenges. In addition to these, the organization has also provided separate recommendations to each department as well as the universities and community organizations that are associated with the students. “Overall, these recommendations aim to create a safer and more supportive environment for foreign students studying in the United States, promoting their well-being and academic success,” FIIDS said in a statement. New India Abroad Saturday, April 13, 2024 5 “Proud to say my family is from India,” AAHOA chairman AVANI ACHARYA Miraj Patel, the Asian American Hotel Owners A s s o c i a t i o n ' s (AAHOA) newly appointed chairman and a second generation Indian American hotelier said he is proud of his Indian heritage. Speaking of his family's humble beginnings from Gujarat in an interview with New India Abroad, he said, “My dad and mom both moved here (US), started off in the hotel business as housekeeping and the front desk, et cetera. And then, just like every other AAHOA member, built the American dream, built their first hotel where me and my brother grew up.” The 30 room independent motel on Wayside Drive in Houston, Texas, was where he was first exposed to the workings of the hotel industry. “As I graduated college, I created my own company and that company's name is Wayside Investment Group. And the idea is that I always think back to where we started on Wayside Street. And so it's a reminder of our roots, our humble beginnings, and a reminder that we stay committed to what we are planning to do,” he added. As many AAHOA members are Indian immigrants from Gujarat who have established prosperous businesses in the United States, Patel, sees AAHOA as representative of the American dream. Patel and his family, who visit India every year, have seen the country's changes firsthand over the years. Commenting on them, Patel stated, "India's economy is expanding like there is no tomorrow. And so, being second-generation, growing up in America, it's always a proud moment to say that my family is from India and people recognize in America where India is going and where it will be.” In line with the Indian government’s Chalo India” campaign for the diaspora to visit India, Patel said, “There's a lot of travel and tourism going towards India, that is why many of our own members are now even developing in India as well with their brand partners. And the brand partners are putting a heavy focus on the local hotel owners and operators in India to develop the brands in America.” On creating history as the youngest chairman, he said,” I am blessed and I am privileged and I am honored to serve as the youngest chairman but more than anything, to show an example that age is just a number. If you have the right vision and that vision is to help the lodging industry and the membership, anything is possible and anything can happen.” Patel believes that creating opportunities for youngsters in development Miraj S. Patel/ Image: @AAHOAChairman management, education, networking will draw them to get involved in the industry and AAHOA. “I hope one day somebody even younger than me becomes the chairman of this board and sets the example that AAHOA is for the next generation of hoteliers. “Building Tomorrow Today” is a theme for this coming year, and I would like to ensure that everything we do is for the future of the organization and for the membership.” Breaking down his priorities as AAHOA chairman into four action areas, Patel said he will first work with the brand partners to create healthy dialogue that will help solve the challenges that members face while franchising or buying brand mandated items. Secondly, he will prioritize tackling the challenges posed by disruptors like AirBnb, especially in the area of shortterm rentals. He will look to reevaluate costs and bring in a new rate model that will be created, keeping in mind the inflation in the current times. Lastly, he will work towards streamlining regulations and making sure they are not confusing or adversely affecting members. “The only thing that I'm looking forward to this year as the incoming chairman is to serve in the best of my ability and only focus on things that matter, the challenges that we face today, and that is to help further improve and enhance our bottom line for the membership,” He told NIA on the sidelines of AAHOACON24. Highlighting the significant contributions made by AAHOA to the U.S. economy, Patel said they will use the data to create better opportunities for the members and the industry at large by working with policymakers and our elected officials.

Lakshmi, widely recognized for her role as a host and executive producer of the acclaimed Hulu series "Taste the Nation" and Bravo's Emmy-winning "Top Chef," reflected on her unexpected journey into the food industry, highlighting her background as a theater major, during a conversation with Arun Upneja, dean of Boston University SHA. She emphasized the importance of hospitality as a means of welcoming strangers into one's space and making them feel cared for, underscoring the broader significance of hospitality beyond mere commerce, resonating deeply with the ethos of SHA's commitment to excellence in hospitality education. “I come at food from a very personal point of view, through my writing and my television shows, and I really think what [we] do is not so much about commerce and business, but it’s about welcoming [a] stranger into your space and making them feel cared for,” she said. “At the end of the day I think everyone needs to learn how to do that, even if they don’t work in the industry. For me, hospitality has always been about making it easier for people who you welcome into your home. I’m so honored that you would give me this award and welcome me into your fold,” she added. The event, attended by industry leaders, students, and faculty, not only celebrated Lakshmi's achievements but also showcased the innovative spirit of the hospitality industry. The summit featured discussions, presentations, and networking opportunities aimed at fostering collaboration and driving positive change within the field. RISHIKA BHARDWAJ T he National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) selected nine students including Indian-origin student Aadya Karthik as the fi nalists of the ‘Power to Explore’ student challenge. The challenge invites schoolchildren to write essays focused on radioisotope power systems (RPS), a type of nuclear battery that powers many of NASA’s far-reaching space missions in the absence of sunlight. The essay should describe a new powered mission for the agency using RPS Karthik, who hails from Redmond, was chosen out of the 45 semi finalists of the national competition and was recognized under the ‘Grade 5-8’ category. In an essay titled ‘Destiny: A Journey of Resilience’, Karthik explored the legacy left behind by Cassini, a spacecraft that focused on exploring Saturn’s moons. After aiding discoveries for almost two decades, NASA discarded the spacecraft in 2017, due to potential contamination to Saturn’s moons. In the essay, Karthik talked about the red arcs observed on Saturn’s fifth largest moon, Tethys, during a Cassini flyby in 2015 and drew parallels to similar features discovered on Jupiter’s moon Europa. “Cassini’s legacy lives on, as its discoveries are still studied by the scientific community, particularly the research it conducted on Saturn’s many moons,” the essay read. Karthik proposed a mission, named Destiny, to investigate the origin and composition of the red arcs, aiming to uncover potential connections between the two moons. The essay also detailed the Destiny spacecraft’s design, which included a spectrometer and camera system to collect data. “Like RPS (Radioisotope Power Systems), I strive to be resilient, regardless of what challenges come my way. For any space mission, resilience is key, as challenges are bound to arise. My perseverance will help me devise creative solutions to these obstacles, leading Destiny through a successful mission. After all, resilience evokes the power to explore,” Karthik who aspires to be a astrophysicist wrote. Announcing the finalists on the occasion of the total solar eclipse, NASA astronaut and former mariner Stephen Bowen, congratulated them for their innovative ideas and explained how a Solar Eclipse limited explorations due to power outage. New India Abroad Saturday, April 13, 2024 7 AVANI ACHARYA Astudy conducted by Pratham USA, one of the largest and most successful nongovernmental education organizations in India, revealed that nearly 50 percent of class fi ve students cannot read a class two level text. Yogi Patel, past president of Pratham USA, maintained that while it is ultimately the role of governments to ensure children are being educated, non-profits like theirs can solve the issue by playing the role of “catalysts.” “We have no schools. We are partnering with government schools,” Patel told New India Abroad adding that the nonprofit offers supplemental education to ensure that the children are equipped with the basics of reading, writing, and arithmetic. Having traveled to India and visited schools in various states, Patel said, “I tested children in school. They cannot write their own names in third grade, fourth grade. In Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan they don’t know how old they are.” According to him, this can be solved if the government intervenes and demands performance from the schools especially at the grassroots level. “You (Government) have to demand the performance. You cannot blame the teachers. You have to say why is there something wrong with our system that needs to be done differently?” He added that while the government has started acknowledging the issue, the real change will come when there is no need for nonprofits like Pratham to do the job for them. “I think something will change and I hope that we don’t have to exist,” he said. “I don’t know if it’ll happen in five years, but I hope it does because then I play bansuri (flute) I would rather teach a child bansuri than how to read because that is such an elementary basic stuff.” Started in the slums of Mumbai in 1994, with Yogi Patel on Pratham USA’s role as a catalyst to reform education support from UNICEF and the Mumbai Municipal Corporation, Pratham USA has grown to impact 75 million children and youth through literacy and vocational programs in 21 Indian states. Last year, the non-profit successfully raised US $30 million in the United States, mainly from Indian Americans. However, Patel said that still there is still less awareness of their work due to which not many people readily attend their fundraisers or take part in their campaigns. “Most of the time when there’s a talk of charity, a lot of people, they shy away, they don’t come. So we have to rely on some Bollywood celebrities or some hype visibility people to draw the crowd and those opportunities are very expensive because Bollywood celebrities, don’t come without money,” he explained. She is approx 5’4” and 175 lbs, last seen wearing a black, long-sleeve t-shirt and red/green pajama pants,” Frisco Police said in its initial post on social media platform X on Apr. 8. The Frisco police confirmed Ishika Thakore's safe return and expressed gratitude for the assistance and support received from everyone involved. “LOCATED – The 17-year-old who was the subject of our Critical Missing Alert from earlier today has been located. We’d like to thank everyone for the offers of assistance and words of support,” the police said in a subsequent update. Another Indian student who had gone missing last month was discovered deceased in Cleveland, Ohio on Apr. 9. Mohammed Abdul Arfath, aged 25 and from Nacharam, Hyderabad, studying at Cleveland University. His passing is another tragic event among several incidents involving Indian or Indian-origin students in the US. In 2024 alone, at least 10 such cases have been reported. MEHAK LUTHRA Satya Shaw, president of Shaw Tax Advisory Group , recently conversed with the NIA about the organizations established to combat discrimination against Asian Americans in the US, along with discussing the future outlook for Indian Americans in the country. Hailing from Orissa, India, Shaw came to the US in 1972 to pursue higher education. After obtaining an MBA and Certified Public Accountant license, he initially worked as an auditor in Tennessee before establishing their own business focused on financial planning and investments. Through his business, Shaw has assisted Indian professionals, including doctors, hotel owners, and store owners, in gaining valuable insights into their respective industries. The Indian Doctor Association created the Association of Physicians of India (API) in 1982 to combat discrimination faced by foreign medical graduates, particularly regarding additional exams and insurance requirements. “The idea was to help the foreign medical graduates to come ahead, like American doctors without any extra exam or problem with malpractice insurance,” Shaw said. The AAHOA (Asian American Hotel Owners Association) was also established to address discrimination faced by Indian hotel owners in obtaining property insurance, loans, and franchising opportunities, Shaw said, 'the Indian hotel owners have a problem getting the property insurance. That's due to discrimination. Then also getting loans, getting franchised. So AAHOA is created to fight against discrimination for financing, property insurance and getting the franchise,” he explained. Shaw was also involved in establishing the Store Owner Association which was created to protect store owners from similar discrimination in franchising, loans, and insurance. He believes that discrimination has significantly decreased over the 30 years since the organizations were formed. “Discrimination almost ended and now there is a fair franchise situation for hotel owners,” he said. “It is not perfect yet, but there is good progress to fight for fair franchise.” There has been notable progress in achieving fair franchising opportunities for hotel owners, although challenges remain, Shaw added. Government support, such as through SBA financing at low-interest rates, has helped address some of the financial hurdles faced by these communities. Currently, 60 percent of all hotel owners are AAHOA members, with a combined property value exceeding a trillion dollars. Shaw predicts that this percentage will likely increase to 80 percent within the next decade. “AAHOA is doing better than any other Indian organization at this moment. Because they have a professional management team, fully staffed with 15- 20 members, fully dedicated to managing the organization,” Shaw said. Unlike other international organizations, AAHOA actively encourages second-generation members to join and take on leadership roles. This inclusivity serves as a source of inspiration for young people, he said. When asked about India’s growth over the last decade Shaw said, “India is flourishing, India is now the fifth largest economy in the world. I think next four to five years, India will be the third largest economy and that will be great for the world because the largest democratic country is becoming the largest.” “India has the youngest population in the world, and the most IT skilled in the world.” He cites the presence of numerous Indian CEOs in leading global companies as evidence of India's economic prowess and potential. “Indian Americans are the second largest earning and have higher education than any Americans,” Shaw said when asked about the future of Indian Americans in the US. “They have a bright future, they work very hard, and they are very ethicaloriented people. America is in good hands with Indian professionals, that's why more and more big companies are getting Indian CEOs.” AAHOA members, with a combined property value this percentage will likely increase to 80 percent to join and take on leadership roles. Shanmugam, contesting under the New Justice Party's banner in Vellore with Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) backing. Later that evening, the Prime Minister would visit Mettupalayam to extend support to the Minister of State in the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying and Ministry of Information and Broadcasting L. Murugan, BJP's candidate from Nilgiris, and K. Annamalai, the state unit president and BJP candidate from Coimbatore. A recent Times Now-ETG Survey forecasts a challenging performance by the BJP in the forthcoming Lok Sabha polls in Tamil Nadu. According to the survey, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam ( DMK) is anticipated to secure 26 percent of the vote share; the BJP at 19 percent of the vote share: closely trailed by Congress at 18 percent; the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam ( AIADMK) closely following at 17 percent. Other parties collectively are forecasted to capture 20 percent of the vote share. However, despite the BJP's significant victory in 2019 Lok Sabha elections, it only secured 29 out of 129 seats in the five southern states. Most of these wins, 25 seats, came from Karnataka, while the remaining four were from Telangana. Notably, the BJP failed to secure any seats in Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala, where historically, it has never won a seat. The BJP's performance has not been strong not just in Lok Sabha elections but also in Assembly elections across the region. For instance. over the past three Assembly elections held in 2011, 2016, and 2021, the BJP managed to secure only four seats in Tamil Nadu in 2021. Political observers say that the bigger objective of the BJP is to try to make sufficient inroads in the overall electoral strength in Tamil Nadu so as to have an impact in the Assembly elections down the road. There is also considerable interest in how much the BJP eats into the electoral vote bank of the AIADMK, its ally until recently. New India Abroad Saturday, April 13, 2024 11 Opinion poll forecasts congress struggles as BJP maintains dominance TRISHANTHYA V Recent opinion polls conducted by India TV-CNX suggest that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is poised for an unprecedented third consecutive term in power, with a strong victory expected in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections starting on April 19. The surveys indicate minimal impact from the Opposition's widelypublicized INDIA bloc, with projections suggesting that the coalition may only secure 94 seats. Findings from the India TV-CNX Opinion Poll reveal a commanding lead for the BJP, with projections indicating a landslide victory of 342 seats. In contrast, the Congress party is anticipated to mirror its 2019 performance, potentially settling at an all-time low of 38 seats. This forecast comes as a blow to the Congress, which had managed a slight improvement from its 2014 tally of 44 seats, securing 52 in the subsequent elections. In a prediction concerning the crucial battleground state of Uttar Pradesh, the survey paints a grim picture for Congress, foreseeing a complete shutout, while the BJP is expected to strengthen its grip with an estimated 73 seats. Additionally, BJP allies, the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) and Apna Dal (S), are projected to secure two seats each. In Bihar, where Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, a key figure in the INDIA bloc, switched allegiance to the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), Congress is forecasted to clinch merely one seat. Meanwhile, the BJP is poised to secure 17 out of the state's 40 Lok Sabha seats, with the Janata Dal (United) (JD(U)) expected to claim 12 seats, as per the survey. The BJP's dominance extends across several states, with comfortable victories anticipated in Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Delhi, and Uttarakhand. Notably, the BJP is projected to bolster its presence in West Bengal, potentially increasing its seat count from 18 in the 2019 polls to 22 in the upcoming elections. The survey suggests that the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress may secure 19 seats. Among regional parties, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) is anticipated to win 18 seats in Tamil Nadu, while the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) is projected to secure 11 seats in Odisha. The opinion poll, conducted between March 1 and 30, encompassed all 543 constituencies, with a total of 179,190 respondents, including 91,100 males and 88,090 females. Congress outlined several promises in its manifesto, including conducting a nationwide socio-economic caste census to abolishing contractualization of government jobs Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is on track for an unprecedented third consecutive term in power / X- @narendramodi STAFF REPORTER I NC, led by party chief Mallikarjun Kharge, along with former presidents Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, unveiled its manifesto for the forthcoming Lok Sabha polls on Apr. 6. The release highlighted the party's commitment to justice through its 'fi ve pillars.' Titled 'Nyay Patra,' the manifesto focuses on 'youth justice', 'gender justice', 'farmers' justice', 'workers' justice', and 'equity justice'. It also encompasses the party's electoral promises for the upcoming elections. Head of the INC manifesto committee and former Union Finance Minister, P. Chidambaram, presented the manifesto today, emphasizing the party's potential to regain power after the polls. He stated, "Congress has achieved it previously and can do so again." Chidambaram expressed dismay over the lack of justice in the past decade, particularly in the last five years, saying, "We are not prophets, but we regret to acknowledge that our predictions made in 2019 have materialized in 2024." He highlighted concerns about the erosion of institutions and the progression towards autocracy. While expressing dissatisfaction with the fulfillment of their predictions, Chidambaram noted the party's efforts to introduce fresh commitments through their manifesto for a rejuvenated India. INC outlined several promises in its manifesto, including conducting a nationwide socio-economic caste census, passing a constitutional amendment to raise the reservation cap, implementing 10percent reservation for Economically Weaker Sections (EWS), and abolishing contractualization of government jobs. The party pledged to enhance institutional credit for marginalized communities, provide unconditional cash transfers, establish an authority to monitor land distribution, and expand the scope of public procurement policies to benefit Scheduled Castes. INC vowed to double scholarship funds for disadvantaged students, ensure apprenticeship opportunities, establish residential schools for marginalized communities, and uphold minority rights guaranteed by the Constitution. The manifesto also commits to promoting linguistic diversity, encouraging reform of personal laws, and advocating for the inclusion of more languages in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution. 12 New India Abroad Saturday, April 13, 2024 VP Kamala Harris Democracies and the Vote I n less than a week, India would have started its elections process, the fi rst phase of which will begin on April 19 and fi nally conclude on June 1. If there is one thing that people in democracies look forward to it is in exercising their franchise guaranteed in the constitution. Irrespective of ideologies and political party affi liations, people in India look forward to lining up at polling stations, in some instances travelling long distances by foot to have that indelible black dot on their fi nger as proof of their fulfi lling their citizen obligation. Of course there are those who choose to stay away from voting for one reason or another, one of which being that it did not matter for politics and the process was going to be the same no matter what. And this is the apathetic group that non-governmental groups particularly target stressing that the vote does matter, especially in democracies. In totalitarian systems the elections process is a sham and a foregone conclusion with dissenters meeting a fate that has long been determined. This is all the more the reason why elections in democracies come under close scrutiny, both from within and without. One count has it that in 2024 there are 64 national elections across the world. Yet only two are attracting much attention: the one in the largest democracy, India; and the other in about six months in the world’s oldest democracy, the United States. In India and during the run up parties have had their opportunity to get at one another, from policies to governance. And the Model Code of Conduct has meant that among other things unaccounted money has been a legitimate source of concern with authorities seizing huge amounts of cash from persons unable to give proper sources. Buying votes with cash is something the country has to come to terms with just as how slowly elections by and large do not witness ballot stuffing and booth capturing of the past. The challenges facing India are indeed enormous, the first of which on the development front on bridging the vast gaps between the haves and the have nots. Eradicating poverty cannot continue to remain a political slogan for long and merely a vote catching gimmick. In the search for rapid economic development, policy makers would have to be acutely aware of the vast areas of the country that are either under-developed or unevenly developed. And there is the realm of education where the gaps are simply unbelievable between government aided schools, colleges and Universities, and private run institutions leading to elitism and an unhealthy environment. The search for fine tuning cannot miss the obvious: making India a better place to live and a country that is truly devoid of toxic rhetoric cutting across religious and caste lines. Harmony is something that cannot stay with lip service but must truly come from within. If India is to pride itself as a nation with strong secular credentials, the onus is on all parties to ensure that it is so. That is the real meaning of a democracy and the vote. DIASPORA TALKS Investor Deedy Das RISHIKA BHARDWAJ I ndia, the world’s largest democracy, will approximately spend US$14.4 billion during its 2024 general elections, which will see approximately 900 million registered voters casting their ballots. “The estimated spending is as much as the economic size of Congo and larger than those of Malawi, Mauritius and Rwanda,” Amitendu Palit, a senior research fellow and research lead (Trade and Economics) at the Institute of South Asian Studies (ISAS), National University of Singapore, wrote in his blog. Palit’s recent article analysed the impact of the Indian 2024 general assembly elections on India’s economic trajectory. He delved into the important role of the Indian general assembly elections in shaping the country’s economic future especially as it is on track to become the fastest growing economy and the world’s third-largest economy. “A major impact of the election results on the Indian economy will be from the economic policies of the new government. Rising to the rank of the third largest economy will require India to pursue some outstanding economic reforms,’ he wrote. Palit stressed the need for economic policies that propelled India towards its US$5 trillion economy goal, these included revitalizing the banking sector through privatization, implementing uniform labour standards nationwide, and expediting free trade agreement negotiations. According to him, the new government will need to act fast to deliver on pending reforms amidst challenges ranging from job creation for the growing youth population to navigating the post COVID-19 pandemic economy. Palit concluded by saying that the next few years would be the decisive years for India’s economic trajectory. Policy reforms stood in the centre of need for change. New India Abroad Saturday, April 13, 2024 13 VERONICA EZHIL US representative from Michigan Shri Thanedar recently submitted a resolution to the House of Representatives aimed at celebrating Hindu Americans and condemning attacks on Hindu places of worship, Hinduphobia, and antiHindu bigotry. The resolution, now referred to the Committee on Oversight and Accountability, underscores the rich tapestry of Hinduism, one of the world’s largest and oldest religions, boasting over 1.2 billion adherents worldwide. Drawing attention to the significant contributions of Hindu Americans since the early 1900s, the resolution emphasizes their diverse racial, linguistic, and ethnic backgrounds, which have greatly enriched the nation's economy and cultural landscape. From Vedanta philosophy to Ayurveda medicine, and from fine arts to spiritual practices like meditation and yoga, Hindu traditions have left an indelible mark on American society. It also pays homage to inclusive religious celebrations such as Diwali and Holi, which are observed vibrantly in Hindu homes and at thousands of Hindu religious houses of worship (mandirs) across the country. It highlights the profound influence of Mahatma Gandhi's teachings of nonviolent civil disobedience, rooted in Hindu philosophy, on the civil rights movement in the United States, championed by the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. However, amidst these celebrations of diversity and cultural exchange, the resolution sheds light on the challenges faced by Hindu Americans. Despite their positive contributions, they often encounter stereotypes, disinformation about their heritage and symbols, and even bullying, discrimination, and hate speech. Alarming statistics from the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Hate Crimes Statistics Report indicate a rise in anti-Hindu hate crimes targeting mandirs and individuals, coupled with a concerning uptick in Hinduphobia within American society. The resolution stands as a firm stance against such intolerance and discrimination. It calls upon the House of Representatives to celebrate the contributions of Hindus and Hinduism to the United States, declare the nation as a beacon of diversity welcoming Hindu Americans, and unequivocally condemn Hinduphobia, anti-Hindu bigotry, and hate. Furthermore, it advocates for the dissemination of appropriate copies of the resolution to the public and the press, amplifying the message of inclusivity and solidarity. If passed, this resolution will commit to upholding the principles of diversity, tolerance, and equality, ensuring that Hindu Americans, like all communities, are recognized, respected, and protected in the fabric of American society. Additionally, HAF Staff Writer Syama Allard contributed as the associate producer of the show. Commenting on the award, McDermott said, “I’m thrilled that my colleagues at the Religion Communicators Council have honored All About Hinduism with a 2024 DeRose-Hinkhouse Award. Religious literacy in the United States is low, particularly when it comes to Hinduism." "Public perceptions about the beliefs and practices of Hindus too often remain dominated by stereotypes and misconceptions. What All About Hinduism set out to do, and I believe achieved, was create a concise and accurate portrait of Hinduism. In the second series we hope to go deeper, furthering our listener's knowledge of this vital, modern, and complex spiritual tradition," McDermott added. New India Abroad Saturday, April 13, 2024 15 Rep. Khanna urges Nicole Shanahan to reconsider Kennedy ticket AVANI ACHARYA I ndian American Rep. Ro Khanna has urged Nicole Shanahan, the running mate of independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr., to reconsider her decision. The Democrat from California has warned Shanahan that in supporting RFK, she is aiding Donald Trump’s return to the White House. Khanna made the plea in an open letter to Shanahan, CBS News reported. “The latest polling from late March showed Trump taking a 1-point lead when RFK Jr., Cornel West, and Jill Stein were on the ballot. Even Trump himself, and other members of his team, have admitted that a RFK Jr. ticket will help his reelection,” Khanna wrote in the letter. He further urged Shanahan to join the Biden camp as her climate advocacy would be an important to reelect President Biden and push for much needed climate reforms. “I know you don’t agree with President Biden on every issue. Neither do I. Despite being a surrogate for the President, I have criticized his position on the Willow Project, which opens part of the pristine Arctic tundra and wetland to oil production,” Khanna wrote adding that despite his differences he still believes that Joe Biden is the best choice for President. Responding to the letter, the attorney and philanthropist said that Khanna’s letter was a deviation from his earlier conversation with her in which he congratulated her for the ticket and said everyone has the right to run for the election. “Clearly, Ro has changed his stance based on pressure from the party. I hope he understands how anti-democratic it is to ask someone to step down from a race that empowers the American public to make their own decisions,” Shanahan said in a post on X. She expressed her disappointment that he had to resort to a public letter rather than having a direct conversation with her. “ He could have called me privately. He has my direct line.” Replying to her post, Khanna maintained that his intention was only to point out that her support for the Kennedy campaign goes against her own ideals of climate action and abortiong rights, which will be accepted well by the Biden campaign. “Nicole has every right to be on the ticket. My point to her both publicly and privately has been that RFK’s ticket threatens the very issues she cares about –such as climate and abortion rights and to welcome her into the Democratic Party,” his post on X read. New India Abroad Saturday, April 13, 2024 21 PRANAV DESAI T he month of March witnessed two major events on assistive technology, one at Los Angeles Convention Center - Ability Expo and another in Anaheim by California State University at Northridge (CSUN). Both events were attended by VOSAPians to understand the latest trends, innovative products available from India and around the world to enable blind, deaf-blind, hearing and locomotive disabled people. VOSAP leadership team with one of the strategic donors Dr. Mahesh Vyas, attended CSUN’s AT conference. CSUN has been a pioneer institution since the early 1980s for developing patented innovative assistive products with use of cutting edge technologies. CSUN has been organizing this annual conference and exhibition for several decades, to bring together innovators to the consumers, markets. VOSAP is deeply committed for harnessing abilities of Specially Abled People with use of innovative technology assistive technology products. The VOSAP team met with several exhibitors and innovators at CSUN, who came from India, S Korea, Ukraine, Canada, Romania, UK, France and around the world. Our team was delighted to find that the AT industry has garnered far more attention from SONY, Microsoft, Samsung and many others compared to previous years and the exhibition was flooded with new innovative products. In this article, I would like to highlight three thematic perspective, products that caught our attention. Orbit’s Research’s Graphiti® Graphiti®, developed by Orbit Research in Vadodara, India, emerged as a groundbreaking solution tailored specifically for the deafblind community. Orbit Research has been creating solutions for blind, Deafblind community for over 25 years. Venkatesh Chari, a person of Indian origin has dedicated his entire life by developing market leading products for blind, deafblind community. He lives in Boston for the past 30 years and founded Orbit’s Research, showed a demo of his products to the VOSAP leadership team, who was joined by Sanjay Shah, a distinguished deafblind himself, tech expert and VOSAP volunteer. Sanjaybhai helped us learn much more about these products. Let me explain to you what this product does. Graphiti® by Orbit Research is an innovative Interactive Tactile Graphics Display that offers nonvisual access to various graphical information like charts, drawings, and images through an array of moving pins. The Tactuator™ technology allows each pin to be set at different heights, enabling the display of topographical maps and grayscale images. With a touch interface, users can learn these shapes by tracing with their fingertips, and traditional touch commands like scrolling and pinch-to-zoom are supported. Example: You can see in the photo in the mobile phone, which is in real time displayed on the device, which is very useful for learning graphs and geography and also learn more about science with this technology so the blind students can now pursue STEM courses. VOSAP will add this product in its product portfolio to offer a subsidy to blind, deaf blind people to learn and communicate. Thinkerbell Labs: The second noteworthy exhibitor was one of the VOSAP virtual Exhibitors, Thinkerbell. VOSAP team met with the CEO Sanskriti Dhawle. Their product Annie is now sold across America through APH, a well established partner in the US for supplying assistive devices in the schools. Their product is helping blind kids to learn Braille at a very early age like we learn ABCD in kindergarten. With Annie®, a visually impaired student can learn to read, write, and type in Braille on their own, while having fun! With twin large braille cells, it introduces children to braille efficiently. Annie® offers browserbased braille typing lessons. Writing becomes paperfree with a first-of-its-kind braille slate, providing instant feedback. Annie® supports self-learning, allowing children to play and learn at their own pace, with homework assignments and tests. Annie® was also featured on Shark Tank India and received funding and has been recommended by NITI Aayog (Planning Commission of India). Interestingly, there were a couple of exhibitors showcasing very similar products to what Indian innovators are exhibiting at VOSAP’s 24x7 virtual Assistive Technology exhibition at events.voiceofsap. org Example, UK’s WeWALK is a smart cane that combines traditional ground feedback with ultrasound technology to detect above-ground obstacles. Very sophisticated, high-end. Minimum price was $350 and the higher price was $850. While it definitely helps people with visual impairment to navigate through safely, “Torch-it” from India is available for just $40. This is New India wherein the Indian innovation with IoT, machine learning, software etc. makes products very affordable for masses. VOSAP has enabled hundreds of blind people in India with smart cane being provided by Torch-it. Several Indian products are prime candidates to come to the US market to help people with hearing, visual or locomotor disability. Torchit, Kibo XS Device, Dextroware are products that are relatively affordable compared to the expensive solutions available in the world markets. VOSAP is helping these innovators with subsidy, early stage market validation to help people in India, US and around the world. While exhibitions like the CSUN AT conference are valuable in bringing together people and innovations, VOSAP envisions enhancing accessibility further by offering our experience of setting up a 24*7 online 3D exhibition for assistive technology products : events.voiceofsap.org . This virtual platform would be accessible to everyone at any time, transcending geographical barriers and ensuring continuous access to the latest advancements in assistive technology. In conclusion, the journey through the 39th Annual CSUN AT conference unveiled remarkable innovations in assistive technology. It reaffirms VOSAP's vision that the AT sector can transform lives by not just promoting inclusion and empowerment for the SAPs but also providing immense growth opportunities for upcoming entrepreneurs. You will also express your emotions and ideas with great ease. But in your environment, you may encounter some resistance to recognizing your merits. Do not try to impose your ideas and tastes on the people around you, because you will not succeed that way. You will get better results by using your powers of persuasion. Sometimes you're upset because you're having trouble progressing professionally, competition is high, and things seem to be stagnant. However, don't stop working. Taurus : A good surprise awaits you in the professional world, Taurus. You may be wary because you don't know it in depth and you may think it might actually harm you. But this is not the case, this person is in good faith and seeks to reach an agreement in which you could both benefit from your mutual knowledge because in reality, you are very complementary. Think carefully about whether the project interests you, but don't dismiss it out of suspicion, your suspicions are unfounded. In any case, you have a few days left to think about it and sort out the details. Gemini : It's all up to you, Gemini. Your week will depend on your attitude. Focus on the issues that concern your work and your goals, because soon nothing and no one will be able to stop your professional progress. Plan, take care of everything that requires special attention, pay attention to details. An intense week also awaits you in love. If you are a Gemini crazy in love and want to solidify your relationship, be careful how you express yourself. Avoid long silences but don't spend all day sending messages either. Virgo : You're going through a very nervous time, Virgo, and it's not all work. In matters of the heart, you have a lot of emotional insecurity right now. This may be because your recent relationship with someone was established in an open, non-committal manner. But now you realize that you have fallen in love and would like to have something more. Sagittarius : You've probably had a few run-ins with one of your superiors in recent days, Sagittarius. This has caused you a lot of discouragement, among other things because you think that the question has no solution. But in a few days, a new project may arise and you will be the first to be surprised when your boss asks you for help. This will be the time to resolve this conflict once and for all. In these days a period of great economic growth begins for Sagittarius which will last approximately six months. You won't notice it too much at first, but your business will move forward. You don't have it so easy in the sentimental domain. A little patience before everything returns to normal. Capricorn : Life will surprise you with an unexpected situation these days, Capricorn. Something you didn't think would happen is going to happen right now. On a personal level, it will be a stressful week, not only because you want to go out and travel, and you won't be able to do that now, but also because a friend will need your emotional support. Do what you can in this regard. You may have noticed that your partner has been moving away from you over the past few days, but he/she hasn't given you an explanation either. Don't get upset or angry with him/her. It is possible that this attitude is due to the fact that he/she does not assimilate a certain situation or that he/ she has problems in his/her family environment. Aquarius : You If you were expecting changes in the professional environment, Aquarius, in a few days, maybe a few weeks, there could be very positive changes. This week you will receive a call for a future interview which will boost your morale. Start preparing, be confident everything will go well and you will get what you want. You may also receive an offer to participate in a commercial operation. You will do well to think about this before you decide, as it could harm you financially. In love, an excellent sentimental week awaits you. Pisces : This week, Pisces, you will receive a great lunar impulse that will allow you to successfully face difficult situations and adapt perfectly to certain important changes that may occur in your life. For this reason, if you have to make important decisions during these days, let yourself be guided by your own judgment, as it will be the most accurate. Now think about this offer you received that would mean career advancement. If you accept it, you will adapt to the new situation in the blink of an eye. In the sentimental domain, you waste a little time recreating the nostalgia of a love that was important to you, but which ended a long time ago. Even if this person comes to mind now with intensity, turn the page. Weekly Horoscope Sundeep Kochar Astrologer https://www.sundeepkochar.com

However, the looming Andhra Pradesh and Telangana Lok Sabha elections, set for May 13, cast uncertainty over the fi lm's release schedule. According to a report by ETimes, the release of the film has been postponed to May 30. The decision to delay the release by a couple of weeks was made by the makers to ensure a smoother run in theaters. This move is expected to benefit the film in the global market, especially since the Hollywood film "The Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes" is also scheduled for release on May 9. The report further stated that the makers have started informing distributors about the change in the film's release date. Despite the ongoing speculation, the makers of the film have not yet made an official announcement regarding the postponement of the release date. But despite the modest remuneration, he was happy that at least he was getting paid because, as he had revealed in an interview to Prasar Bharti, for his first real job on radio, he got nothing more than one tin of the health drink he was promoting on a radio singing contest, Cadbury’s Phulwari, a week. He was just 20 at the time, but already a veteran in radio having started young. At the age of seven, he had tagged behind his brother, Hamid, to the Air India Radio Station in Bombay (now Mumbai). His bade bhai was a well-known broadcaster and amused by Ameen’s interest, he suggested the youngster record something at the studio. Ameen, who fancied himself as a singer, immediately rendered one of his favourite songs. The wire recording was played back to him. It was the first time he really heard his voice and he hated it. Surprisingly, his brother thought he had potential, but not as a singer. Hamid started suggesting his name for child roles in radio plays. Groomed by his brother and guru, Ameen soon graduated to hosting children’s programmes and then music shows on radio. When the offer came from Radio Ceylon, Hamid urged him to take it up even though Ameen had schooled only in English and Gujarati and had been broadcasting in English till then. Having helped their mother with her fortnightly newspaper, Rahber, which was published in the Urdu, Gujarati and Devnagari script, he knew how to read and write Hindi and also spoke it. The response to this first-of-its-kind Bollywood film music programme in Hindi was overwhelming. “The first episode brought in almost 9,000 letters from listeners and the number kept growing to 60,000-70,000 a week,” he marveled. After a year, the radio station, along with the sponsors, decided that the only way to check this Tsunami of mail was to make it a once-a-week hit parade of recently released Hindi film songs whose popularity would he gauged by the way they went up and down the charts, finally exiting to make way for a new entrant. Binaca Geetmala started in 1952 and continued on Radio Ceylon till 1988. In 1989, it shifted to the Vividh Bharati Service on the All-India Radio network and continued till 1994. It was popular not just across the country and the Indian subcontinent, but all over Asia. And even when the name changed, from Binaca Geetmala to Cibaca Geetmala, Cihaca Geetmala and Colgate Cibaca Sangeetmala, the one voice that remained unchanged was that of Ameen Sayani. He has been imitated by radio jockeys down the decades, but none of them enjoyed his popularity or longevity. From 1976, he pioneered the export of Indian radio shows and commercials in the US, Canada, New Zealand, the UAE, Eswatini, Mauritius, Fiji and South Africa. In a career spanning over six decades, he produced, compered and gave voice overs for 53,000 radio programmes and 19,000 spots and jingles, a feat that got him into the Limca Book of Records. He was also a winner of the prestigious 'Hindi Ratna Besides radio programmes, Ameen also hosted TV shows, he also compered over 2,000 musical stage shows, beauty contests, award nights, concerts, workshops, seminars, silver jubilee functions and international film festivals. He also did cameos in a few Bollywood films, starting with Mehmood’s horror comedy Bhoot Bangla and Dev Anand’s Teen Deviyan in 1965. His disappointment was that no one cast him in the lead though having interviewed many top-rated actors in shows like Filmi Mulaqaat, Mehekti Baatein, Sangeet Ke Sitaron Ki Mehfil, he imagined himself as a hero. “But I only got villainous roles,” he rued and finally agreed to play an announcer in films too. From 1954 to 1993, his hit parade came up with annual year-end lists and the winners were interviewed. Toprated stars and filmmakers, to lyricists, music directors and singers, it was easy for him to interview everyone, but Kishore Kumar. One year, all the year’s top singers from Geeta Dutt, Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle to Talat Mehmood, Mukesh and Mohd. Rafi came to the studio. Only his college friend, Kishore Kumar, insisted Ameen come all the way to Andheri and record him at a shoot. However, when he reached there with a bulky tape recorder, he was met at the gate by the film’s producer who told him that Kishore Kumar would arrive only after he departed. Angry and humiliated, Ameen did not approach the singer for the next 18 years. Finally, it was the singer who came to him and courted everyone, including his slightly miffed interviewer by putting three Kishore Kumar’s rom different ages-the child, the young man and a buddha-on the dock, to be questioned and sentenced by ‘judge’ Kishore who mimicked a popular villain of Hindi film, Tiwari, to question and sentence him. The show was a riot and cleared the air between the two friends. Kishore Kumar continued to rule the charts till his untimely demise on October 13, 1987. Ameen Sayani was active till 2014. From a faceless voice on radio, he became a familiar face on the screen. With his genial personality, his old- world graciousness and that inimitable voice he regaled almost three generations of listeners and viewers. When on February 20, at the age of 91, he succumbed to a heart attack, hidding adieu to his “behnon aur bhaiyon”, a greeting he coined as a mark of respect to women, tributes poured in from all over the globe because there will never be another Ameen Sayani. This performance gave him a four-shot lead over Denny McCarthy heading into the final round, as he aimed to secure the last spot in the Masters. Bhatia's total score stood at 15-under 201. Following McCarthy, Brendon Todd was the nearest competitor to the lead, posting a 70 and trailing by seven shots. McCarthy remained the sole player keeping pace with the 22-year-old Indian-American. On the closing par 5, he opted to lay up and then hit a wedge to a back pin, landing just inside 10 feet before making the birdie putt.
