The sordid killings at schools, colleges, universities, establishments and

inability of authorities to come to terms with a problem that has come to

ability to not being able to move forward on account of vested interests
and those self-styled constitutionalists taking cover under the Second

Gun violence is not something that can be confined to numbers or in
expressing satisfaction that fewer people have been killed in one year
compared to another. For instance it is pointed out that more than 19,000
people died in gun related murders in 2020 and another 24,000 killed

obviously miles to go. Not long ago when Prime Minister Shinzo Abe of
Japan was felled by an assassination the world was shocked that this could
happen in a country with such stringent gun control laws. But it turned
out that the assassin “built” his weapon at home; and in an age of internet
information on anything and everything is readily available.
But blaming the internet on gun violence will not work. In the United
States, for example, mass murderers have walked away from stores with
an array of weapons including deadly assault rifles that are normally
associated with military garrisons. What is more surprising is that some
of these are readily available in a country where people cannot pick up
beer or cigarettes until they were 18 or 21 years old.
The so-called cooling period to buy a weapon has also not been much
of a deterrent for the simple reason that only a person with a criminal
record gets flagged, but not someone who is going to commit a crime.
Sometimes in the aftermath of a deadly shooting it has come to light that
the accused had given ample indication of an impending catastrophe to
family or friends, even to law enforcement; only that these signals had not
been picked up. The onus in America is clearly on law makers to come to
