India Abroad December, 2025 ® West Coast 3California to reissue licenses for 17k truckersJEFFIN T. KALEEKALCalifornia will begin reissuing non-domiciled commercial driver’s licenses to truckers whose credentials were set to expire early next year, offering relief to thousands of immigrant drivers, including a significant number of Indians, advocacy groups said. The California Department of Motor Vehicles will start the reissuance process following discussions with the Sikh Coalition, which said the move would prevent the cancellation of nearly 17,000 licenses scheduled for Jan. 5, 2026.In November 2025, the CA-DMV notified about 17,000 holders of non-domiciled commercial driver’s licenses that their credentials no longer met federal requirements and would expire within about 60 days unless brought into compliance. The notices followed a Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration audit that found some licenses did not meet updated federal standards. The issues included cases in which CDL expiration dates extended beyond drivers’ lawful visa approvals. Federal authorities directed the state to correct or revoke the noncompliant licenses.Reissuing the licenses would allow affected drivers to maintain valid credentials while addressing compliance issues, avoiding widespread cancellations that would have sidelined thousands of truckers.Munmeeth Kaur, legal director of the Sikh Coalition, said the decision was an important step in protecting drivers’ livelihoods. “States like California should be defending truckers’ rights against the federal government’s overreach, and providing a clear process for drivers to resolve these wrongful cancellation notices is setting things on the right course,” Kaur said. She added that the outcome benefits both workers and the state’s economy.“Drivers depend on trucking for their families’ livelihoods, and California depends on truckers to keep the economy moving, so we are encouraged by this outcome,” she said. The move offers relief to truck drivers facing license cancellationsRepresentative image / Pexels2040 W Auburn Rd,Rochester Hills, MI 48309YOU THINK IT, WE INK IT248-829-1011SCAN TO GET QUOTE GIVE FEEDBACKSCAN TOAshok BaddiGET YOUR BRAND NOTICED WITHOUR TOP-NOTCH PRINTING SERVICES!

India Abroad December, 2025 ® 4 West Coast MALVIKA CHOUDHARYUC Berkeley on Dec. 3 approved a Hindu Heritage Month proclamation, reversing an earlier decision and becoming the first U.S. university to formally recognize the observance. The Associated Students of the University of California (ASUC) Senate, passed the measure after months of negotiations between the executive vice president’s office and student groups including the CoHNA Youth Action Network (CYAN) and Hindu YUVA.The proclamation formally recognizes the term Hinduphobia, acknowledges incidents of vandalism against Hindu temples in the Bay Area, affirms Santana Dharma, and notes the absence of a dedicated Hindu caucus within the ASUC.In a joint statement released on Dec. 7, the Hindu student groups said the passage “signals a positive step in improving Hindu representation within student government,” adding that six months of discussions with the EVP’s office showed that “conversations are possible despite even the most contentious of disagreements.” CoHNA described the outcome as the result of “a year of perseverance, advocacy and negotiation.” The organization credited its CYAN Berkeley chapter and Hindu YUVA, highlighting the efforts of student leaders Aryan Shinde and Arya Kulkarni.“Can’t believe all that we’ve accomplished for the Hindu community at UC Berkeley within such a short period of time,” Shinde wrote on X.The groups also criticized what they described as past gatekeeping by some “South Asian” organizations on campus and said the approval marks an “important first step” toward repairing relations between Hindu students and the ASUC. They expressed hope that future conversations will be shaped “not by external political narratives, but by the voices of Hindu students on campus.”The Senate’s reversal follows a contentious episode earlier in 2025, when the ASUC voted down the first Hindu Heritage Month proposal, prompting a campus-wide and national debate. Opponents of the initial proposal argued that it risked being associated with Hindu nationalism, a claim supporters said was unfounded and stigmatizing. India Abroad December, 2025 ® 28 Midwest Affordability, immigration drive Neil Khot’s Illinois Congress bidLalit K Jha (IANS)Rising living costs, immigration anxiety, job losses and concerns over cuts to Social Security and Medicare are shaping Indian American entrepreneur Neil Khot’s campaign for the US House of Representatives from Illinois’ 8th Congressional District, as he mounts a grassroots Democratic bid to retain a seat being vacated by Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi.Khot said conversations with voters across the district have consistently pointed to economic pressure and uncertainty. “People are worried that they are insurance premiums are going up,” he said. “Interest rates are very high. So there is unaffordability in the society.People cannot afford housing. People cannot afford dayto-day groceries.” He added that business owners are unsettled by trade policy uncertainty, saying there is “no proper tariff position, so they don’t know what steps to take,” he told IANS in an interview.Immigration enforcement has emerged as another defining issue, according to Khot. “People are worried. Business people are worried that they’ve been dragged, kidnapped and taken,” he said, referring to fears around immigration raids. As a firstgeneration immigrant, Khot said the issue is deeply personal. “We never, ever have to go through this feeling that the current government has made us go through that America is not welcoming,” he said. “America should be welcoming. That’s what they did to me.” “For my seniors, I want to fight to make sure Medicare and Social Security are not cut down,” he said, adding that benefits such as SNAP and healthcare should also be safeguarded. “In the richest country, we should not have healthcare bankrupt people and families.”Presenting himself as an outsider to Washington politics, Khot stressed that he is “not a career politician” but a “small business entrepreneur” with decades of community involvement. He said his campaign is focused on “fighting for immigrants, fighting for the hardworking families,” while ensuring “business people have the right opportunity to make sure that they can run proper businesses.”The Democratic primary is scheduled for March 17, and Khot said his campaign, now about eight months old, has already secured a place on the ballot. “Our campaign is a grassroots campaign. It’s a campaign that’s gonna support our community,” he said, adding that voter outreach has begun across the district’s nearly 25 villages and eight townships. Television advertising, mailers and expanded field operations are set to begin in mid-January.Khot outlined the district’s demographic makeup as a key factor in his strategy. He said the constituency has about 750,000 residents, with roughly 60 per cent white voters, about 24 per cent Hispanic or South American residents, and between 12 and 16 per cent South Asians, alongside smaller numbers of other minorities. “Most of our voters are going to be about the age of 50 and above,” he said. “That’s a major dynamic of this entire district.”He said his approach is to build support across communities, with particular emphasis on white voters, followed by Hispanic and South Asian residents. Fundraising and volunteer support, he added, have come from across the country, including California, Washington, DC, Atlanta, Chicago and the Midwest. “We need representation,” Khot said, describing national backing as important for Indian American and South Asian communities.Presenting himself as an outsider to Washington politics, Khot stressed that he is “not a career politician” but a “small business entrepreneur” with decades of community involvementNeil Khot / X/@NeilForCongress

India Abroad December, 2025 ® 32 India Abroad Dialogue Avani AcharyaCongressman Shri Thanedar urged greater political participation by Indian Americans in his keynote at the inaugural India Abroad Dialogue held in Detroit on Dec. 13.Thanedar said political involvement directly shapes outcomes that affect daily life. “Politics impacts your life,” he said. “It impacts your immigration status. It impacts your job status. It impacts every part of your life, your children’s lives.”The democrat framed his remarks against the backdrop of shifting global alliances, emphasizing the strategic importance of the India-U.S. relationship. “The United States needs India because China has become so aggressive… China is a real threat to the United States,” he said, citing cyber threats and economic competition.Addressing recent trade and tariffrelated tensions, Thanedar cautioned against unilateral measures, arguing they undermine long-term cooperation. “I don’t think that is productive for a good India-US relationship,” he said, adding that disputes should be resolved through dialogue and sustained engagement. “There should be a better dialogue to be able to do this so that we can have a lasting good relationship with these two countries.”Turning to regional ties, Thanedar highlighted Michigan’s growing economic and technological links with India, particularly in manufacturing and high-skilled immigration. “Michigan and India are already economically linked,” he said, pointing to collaboration in the public and technology sectors. He cited Ford Motor Company’s recently announced $370 million investment in India as an example of deepening commercial engagement. “That vision reflects confidence in India’s growth in manufacturing capability and its long-term growth,” he said, noting that Michigan-based companies continue to expand globally while remaining rooted in the state.Thanedar also addressed rising anti-immigrant sentiment, rejecting claims that immigrants undermine American workers. “We are a nation of immigrants. America’s greatness is not despite immigrants,” he said. “It’s because of the contribution of immigrants.”He underscored the role of Indian American professionals in advancing innovation, particularly in technology and mobility. “Immigration has greatly benefited America by giving us the best shot at recruiting talent from all over the world,” he said, describing India as “a fantastic source for remarkable talent in STEM.”In closing, Thanedar called on Indian Americans nationwide to take a more active role in civic life. “Participate. We have to be participating. We have to be part of the mainstream,” he said, urging volunteering, community organizing, and political engagement to strengthen the community’s voice.“We are a strong, proud community,” he added, “and when we stand together, we can accomplish anything we set our minds to.”“Participate. Be part of the mainstream,” Thanedar tells Indian AmericansLinking political participation to immigration policy, economic opportunity, and long-term influence, Thanedar said disengagement carries real consequences for the community’s future in the United StatesCongressman Shri Thanedar / File PhotoUS Congressman warns India ties cooling over tariffs, China challengeLalit K Jha (IANS)Influential American Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi warned that the US–India relationship has entered a “cold and frigid” phase, cautioning that recent policy shifts risk undermining a partnership built painstakingly over three decades.“I think the weather outside matches the best description of the US-India relationship that I can come up with right now — a little bit cold and frigid,” Krishnamoorthi said during his keynote address at the India Abroad Dialogue in Chicago. He said the relationship “should be warm” and “continuing to rise in importance,” arguing that recent changes had moved it “for the worse,” despite India being “one of the largest economies in the world” and “the largest democracy in the world.”Krishnamoorthi said India’s strategic value went beyond economics. “It’s also an incredibly important partner and friend,” he said, citing shared commitments to “equality, freedom, democracy, minority rights, secularism, free enterprise, and making sure that everybody in the world tries to observe what I call the international rules of the road.”He sharply criticised the Trump administration’s tariff policy, calling a proposed 50 per cent tariff on Indian goods “arbitrary” and “capricious.”“A 50 per cent tariff on India doesn’t make any sense. It has no basis in any kind of logic,” he said. “It appears to be the product of a Truth Social tweet, and that’s not how trade policy should be done.” Krishnamoorthi said imposing higher tariffs on India than on China was strategically counterproductive. “When we are trying to counterbalance the influence of the CCP in this world, why would we ever want to push away our friends, partners and allies like India?” he asked. He said China posed a “triple threat — economic, military and technological,” accusing Beijing of stealing intellectual property, flooding markets with subsidised goods, and weaponizing monopolies for coercion. “That’s what they have done from steel to solar, to paper, to glass, to electric vehicles,” he said. The Congressman also defended legal immigration, warning against calls to curtail it. “Legal immigration has been the goose that lays the golden eggs for this country,” he said. “We would not have a Dr Bharat Barai (an eminent Indian American from the area) here. We would not have my family in many of yours if we didn’t have a legal immigration system.” Calling Indian Americans “the greatest export of India,” he said the five-million-strong community served as “bridge builders” between New Delhi and Washington.Krishnamoorthi warned that antiIndian sentiment was rising. “Just a few weeks ago, an elected official from Florida called for me to be deported,” he said, describing the rhetoric as “deeply disturbing.”The US–India strategic partnership has expanded significantly since the early 2000s, encompassing defence cooperation, technology, and trade. Despite periodic political friction, both countries continue to view each other as central partners in balancing China’s influence in the IndoPacific.Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi / X/@CongressmanRaja
