Majalah SEMBAKA 2020

Laughter echoed around the castle,
For ages He renewed His vow,

To protect, to stand up for his lover,
A kind lover, a thief once in His castle,

A princess but loving to the poor,
For centuries, their love never fake,

For their love was not fake.
Unfortunate come to end,
When human pray for power,
And power became God,
Greediness killed the people’s souls,

Temptation made war,
He tried to save everything,
However, for ages He was in peace,

Too long at ease.
Paired only with broken wings,

Yet he managed to fly,
To go against the wind,
To follow His soul, to find His dream,
Yet, the infrangible spirit stand still.

He, the indestructible, almost immortal,
Would not seek empathy nor sympathy,

His pride fighting His foe,
Protecting His lover, unbearable fall.
Drops of blood trailed down the woods,

The sounds of music hummed,
With His wings, He cradled His Queen,

And the sword which struck His heart,
Buried His face against His lover’s,

It remains silence now,
Whilst He hummed His last song,
It’s the beginning of forever winter,
Of a great Ruler, a great King,

and a great Lover.

My Brush With Death

Written by: TENG HONG XU ( 5 Setia / 2020 )

It had been raining all day and it didn't seem like it would
stop soon. I had been informed by the weather forecast that it
would continue to rain like this till next morning. My
parents had gone out for a business trip together while I
was left at home.

As I was old enough to take care of myself my parents were
not really worried of me at all. They left me with a good
amount of money for me to spend on. As the sky got darker
I noticed that I was getting hungry, because of the heavy
rmin I’vp oplpn lo oook for kyspjf. Whijp I wms prppmring
to cook, I heard the news reporter on the television reporting
that a criminal who has murdered countless people have
recently escaped confinement.

The news brought a chill up my spine as my house is rather
close to the prison. As I finished preparing my food, I dug
down. I continued to wash my dishes, and I thought to
myself that I should check if the doors were safely locked.
With the criminal on the loose it would be best to be safe
than sorry. When I was locking the front door, the sound
of a window breaking made my heart skipped a bit.

I did not panic as that would give my presence away so I
carefully made my way to my room trying not to be seen. As
I locked myself in the closet, I quickly informed the police
officers that there was an unknown man in the house. The
police officers told me to stay calm but I could hear my heart
pounding. The footsteps of the man coming closer and closer
surges my adrenaline. All I could do was pray, I prayed for
my safety, I prayed that the police would arrive soon.

The footsteps came to a halt in front of my bedroom door. I
heard the doorknob slowly turning, did I not lock the door!
The man came in to inspect my room, he was breathing
heavily. He soon passed by the closet, because he was now
close. I could see that he was wearing a green T-shirt and a
pair of dirty pants. Then to my disbelief he attempted to open
the door to my closet with a screwdriver. Then everything went
black.

When I woke up, I was being carefully tended by a police
officer. It turned out that when the criminal was just about to
open the closet door the police arrived. They informed my
parents about the situation and managed to capture the
criminal in the nick of time. The criminal was the one who was
reported on the news. I was glad that I have escaped
unscathed. If it were not for the police officers I would have
been gone. My brush with death made me realised that
anything can happen. I hope that no one has to go through
what happened to me.

REAL WEALTH IS NOT MEASURED IN MONEY
By Mohd Zulfikry Cheong ( 5 Setia / 2020 )

“Real wealth is not measured in money. If you know how
to make money, it will only become more but your happiness is still
the same”, a quote from Robert Kiosaki in one of his books titled
“Rich Dad Poor Dad”. I strongly agree with this statement as money
will always make more money. At first, we will feel happy by the
money and possessions that we have but for granted. We will only be
happy for the first few months. When we are still working, we are
happy by the small pay-check that we got every month as it shows us
our hard work pays off. But this is not the case when we make 100
thousand or 200 thousands a month. The happiness of hard work is
gone.

A wise man once said, money is not the real currency in
life. Time is. With time we learn patience and happiness. We spend
time to read, to work and meet people that will make us feel happy.
Time is something that you cannot get back once you invested it. We
spend money on something that will give us instant outcome but we
spend time to something that tests our patience. Time is money and I
strongly agree. Successful people like Robert Kuok, Bill Gates, Steve
Jobs, they all invested their time at something they never knew the
outcome. If we are willing to bet our main currency, main wealth or
time, to something that we firmly believe will work out, our time is
not wasted.

There can only be so much time in our life - so do not
take it for granted. Do not do something that you will regret later on
in life as we cannot rewind time. Appreciate the people around you
and make them happy because soon enough, they will leave us. As I
said before, real wealth is time.

One can have so much money but only a small amount of time. Be
happy with your life. Do things that you love and love the things that
you do as this is our investment. Whether you like it or hate it, this is
the fact. If time can be measured like in the movie „On Time‟,
everyone will appreciate their time.

The next wealth is somehow linked with time and it is
happiness. As I said in paragraph 2, time teaches us to be patient and
happy. What do I mean with that? You may ask. By being patient, we
stopped the risk of wasting more time and then getting angry by the
things that should not even make us angry. For example, if you were
standing in a queue and the next aisle is suddenly free, you would
obviously went for that counter but the machine broke and the staff
have been fiddling it for 5 minutes, you lost patience. As a result, you
walk back to the previous counter knowing that suddenly the register is
fine and the line starts to pile up. Because of this little impatience,
your mood is ruined for the whole day. This is what I mean by time
taught us patience and bears happiness.

Lastly, we may know this but we either do not care or we
forget about it. Health is also a real wealth. We tend to take our health
for granted especially if you rarely get sick. But once we get old, that is
when we start to regret. We would think about all the things that we
could do, all the food that we could eat. Money cannot buy wealth. It
cannot restore our health so that is why the phrase „money is
everything‟ is not true at all. A lot of people asked, ” why is he so
happy even if he is so poor and he is not happy even if he is super
rich?” Because the poor knows how to spend his time wisely by doing
things he loves. He is granted good health and frankly, yet very patient
with his misfortune. Hence the phrase real wealth is never measured
in money or possession, is true.

Pengalaman Sekeping Roti

Saat membuka mata
tersedar hakikat dunia
Tidak pernah berputus asa
Dicarikan sekeping roti

Pagi ke senja, senja ke malam
Niatnya Cuma satu
Ingin melihatsinar mata
Daripada si kecil yang kekosongan

Hanya dia yang tahu
Saat dimana hatinya terguris
Menelan duri melukai hati
Dia tutupkan suara itu
Dengan senyumanya

Pesanya …
Maniskan mulut, jangan biar menjadi belati
Ringankan tangan, saling berkongsi
Biarpun sedikit, jadikannya bukit
Dalam apa jua yang kamu lakukan

Masa bukan perahu
Kujadikan roti bagai hidup ku
Daripada seuli doh yang tawar
Menjadi doh yang digemari ramai

Hanya kerana dia
Aku kini hidup bermakna
Sekeping menjadi sebuku
Meminta menjadi memberi
Hanya kerana
Dia dan sekeping roti

Kasih Pokok Kelapa

Terlihat pohon melenggang
Ditiup bayu senja

Dahannya teguh bak jiwa si bapa
Daunnya berirama bak hati si ibu

Dahan yang kukuh
menjadi titian

Buat yang hilang arah tujuan
Buat yang ingin mencari diri

Buat yang ingin kembali
Ia mampu menjadi sokongan

Daunnya diikat menjadi ketupat
Ketupat yang sentiasa mereka harapkan

Ikatannya sekuat kasih
Lilitannya bagai sokongan
Simpulannya seerat hubungan
Menjadikan ketupat lebih sempurna

Hidup ku kurang lengkap tanpa pokok kelapa
Kerana kasih pokok kelapa
Terbuktilah siapa diri ku

The Evolution Of Science And Technology
By Ong Jia Hong (4 Setia/2020)

A very good morning to the honourable judges. Come closer, I
have a secret to tell you. I love technology! Ever since I was a
child, I’m always fascinated by the technology surrounding us.
From the confusing cables behind the TV, to the PC set I used for
gaming. I love them all. And this brings us to the topic of my
speech today ‘the evolution of science and technology’.

Let’s take a trip down memory lane. About half a century ago, the
world’s first mobile phone was created. It weight’s about 2
kilograms and it’s about the size of a brick. Can you imagine
talking on your phone as if you’re talking into a shoe box? It’s
really uncomfortable. Luckily, our technology had evolved. The
phones nowadays are slick and slim. They’re easy to take and it’s
about the size of a human palm. In just 50 years, we are able to
minimize the size of it even to the size of a watch. It also makes a
great entertainment source. Back in my days, I was still playing
with Lego and action figures. But kids these days are satisfied
with just a screen.

Let’s have another example. The car. About a hundred years ago,
cars are basically a metal box with wheels and an engine inside. It
couldn’t even go on reverse. Nowadays, cars have improved on to
a whole new level. Automotive company such as Tesla is selling
self-driving cars! The passengers are able to kick back, relax and
enjoy the ride without even actually driving the car. With this
achievement, we’re able to greatly reduce the numbers of car
accidents that happened each year.

This is because most of the time, car crashes are directly
linked to human error. But there is a downside. The car is
very expensive and not everyone can afford it. Boy, I wish I
have one of those cars.

Some says that the evolution of technology is bad for the
human race because it makes us less productive and more
and more lazy. But without technology, things will take a
longer time and more energy to build. Back in the old days,
buildings are build up brick by brick using nothing but their
bare hands. This takes a very long time and it’s a waste of
human labour. In this present, with all those heavy
machineries, we can even build a skyscraper in the matter of
days! At this point, I won’t even be surprised if there’s a new
world’s tallest building record tomorrow.

Let’s have a change of perspective. The perspective of a
doctor. When the worst plague in human history (the Black
Death) shocked the world, our medical knowledge that time
wasn’t enough to face against it. The doctors back then
advised the patient to rub their body with snake meat and
even drink mercury. As expected, the treatment didn’t
worked and 30 percent of Europe’s population has been
wiped out. Nowadays with the newest medical equipment,
we are able to control and even cure the plague! It’s a
miracle really. I feel lucky just by being born at the 20th
century.

But here comes Covid-19 and through the advancement of
science and technology, doctors around the world are working
together using medical online platforms to combat the virus
as well as to reach the public by giving medical consultations
which can cut time and reduce the raising risks of cross
infection. China managed to build an emergency hospital to
treat patients infected with the virus in just ten days with the
help of superb engineering technology.

In my opinion, technology has evolved a lot alongside with
humanity. From a hammer made of stone, to a touch screen
device with limitless potential. The evolution of technology in
these past few years has achieved a much bigger feet than
what we’ve achieved in a hundred years ago. Without it,
travelling will be harder, long distance communication will be
impossible and movie night will never exist. This is something
that we should teach to the next generation as a tribute to
those who sacrificed their time and their lives for the
greatness of science. Thank you.
