countryside to the sprawling archaeological site of

flora and fauna of the area. Caracol boasted a very large
population center at its peak, with more than 150,000
inhabitants and 30,000 structures, which included an

the Mayan Lowlands during the Classic Period, built with

pre-Columbian Maya Civilization. There are traces of early agriculture in Tikal that dates as far as 1000 BC. Tikal
reached its apogee during the Classic Period and during this time the city dominated much of the Mesoamerican
region politically, economically and militarily. The dynastic line of Tikal, spanned 800 years and included at least 33
rulers. Following the end of the Late Classic Period, no new major monuments were built at Tikal. coupled with a
gradual population decline, culminating with the site’s abandonment by the end of the 10th century.

Depending on availability your tour may depart from either

tee can be found in rivers, lagoons, estuaries, and coastal
areas. These creatures prefer shallow water and can only
survive in warm waters. Manatees range in color from gray
to brown with wrinkled skin and single bristle-like hairs
scattered all over their bodies. They have thick whiskers
that cover their snouts and their upper lip is divided into
halves, which close like pliers on the plants they eat.
Despite their small eyes and lack of outer ears, manatees
are thought to see and hear quite well. The nostrils are lo-
cated on the topside of the snout and can be closed tightly
by valves when the manatee is underwater. Their eyes have
inner membranes that can cover the eyeballs for additional
protection. Manatees have a paddle-shaped tail and two
flippers in the front of their bodies that they use for guiding
their bodies and scooping up their food. The average adult
manatee weighs 1,500 to 1,800 pounds and measures 10 -
12ft, with adult females being generally larger. Historically,
manatees of Belize have been hunted for food, their hides,
