Title : Homeschooling
General purpose : To inform
Specific purpose : To inform my audience what the advantages and disadvantages
of homeschooling
INTRODUCTION
Transition: We will be looking at the Homeschooling topic. So, in your definition, what is
homeschooling?
1. Homeschooling is Education at home which is now one of the choices of parents for
their children's education.
2. According to Lines (1993), home schooling is education that takes place at home as
opposed to school.
3. The highest country in the world that practises home-schooling is the United States.
4. According to statistics released by the National Home Education Research
Institute, home-schooled students in the United States will be almost 3.7 million in
2020 until 2021.
5. Meanwhile, In Malaysia, home-schooling is not widespread, but it is growing.
According to Bajunid,(2002), there are approximately 5000 home-schooled children
in Malaysia.
6. Also, there are countries that ban home-schooling such as Germany, Sweden, and
Turkey.
7. Usually, we only hear about this home schooling being practised by the upper class
and celebrities, right? But basically, it provides a lot of advantages as well as
eliminating dropouts in education. However, home-schooling also has a disadvantage
because it will have a negative impact on children.
Transition: There are six key points I will be discussing about advantages and
disadvantages of homeschooling. I want to begin by advantages homeschooling to children
and then I will move onto disadvantages homeschooling for children.
BODY
Well ladies and gentlemen, Now that you're aware of the overview, let's begin with what the
advantages of homeschooling are.
1. Flexible and Relaxed
a. Home schooling will provide fun for children in terms of activities and learning
places because of the relaxed and informal environment.
b. Their learning is not limited to at home only, the learning environment can be
changed according to the suitability of time and place.
c. For example, learning and teaching time is more flexible because it is not tied
to a specific routine where parents can start the teaching and learning
process according to the suitability of children.
d. Parents who are closer and know their children can focus on their children's
education according to their interests and personalities.
e. Thus, by planning appropriate and flexible activities, they will become more
passionate and be able to further develop their potential.
2. Study in Smaller Groups
a. Learning in a smaller group is also one of the advantages of home-schooling
when studying at home.
b. Parents or teachers can monitor and approach children to find out what their
weaknesses are and what needs to be fixed individually.
c. For example, student A has a problem where he is not proficient in writing
and fluent when speaking, at the same time, student B is not fluent in
speaking but he is proficient in writing.
d. This suggests that these two students need different learning and teaching
methods to ensure their potential is used optimally.
e. As a result, parents or teachers are able to teach children with situations that
are not too rushed or tied to the syllabus until they are properly proficient.
f. Meanwhile, children will also have fun and be able to maintain momentum to
deepen the knowledge they are learning.
3. Accurate Safe Learning Environment
a. Homeschooling has Safe and secure place to study.
b. The outdoor environment is not a bad and unsuitable place.
c. Parents want to give their best so that their child learns in a conducive
environment and is not influenced by an unhealthy environment.
d. For Example, bad incidents such as a culture of bullying, a culture of ridicule
or being labelled for physical inadequacy.
e. This can cause children's self-confidence and self-esteem to decrease due to
these things.
f. It is likely to escalate further to a worse level if the teacher does not take
appropriate action.
g. As a result, providing home-schooling to children will reduce their risk of being
involved in a negative social environment.
Transition: Next, I will first cover the disadvantages of homeschooling toward children.
1. High in Cost
a. Home-schooling comes at a high price. It takes a lot of money to buy the
learning necessary and curriculum needs and home-school supplies needed
to adequately educate children.
b. For example, a computer, iPad, or phone is needed during learning.
Meanwhile, in the aspect of the curriculum, it is like sports equipment.
c. If children enjoy playing ball, then parents or teachers should focus on their
interest by providing necessities and tools for the game of football as a
motivator.
d. If the children go through home-schooling with a hired teacher, it will also
incur costs for the cost of food, transportation, and the cost of hiring the
teacher.
e. So, it has been proved that Home-schooling will cost a lot compared to
school, parents do not have to spend high costs because all the learning
needs and school curriculum have been provided from the beginning.
2. Less Social Interaction
a. Interacting with peers is a fundamental aspect of a child’s development.
b. Home-schooling will limit the amount of social interaction that children can
have because those who attend home school do not spend as much time with
their peers as children who attend formal schools.
c. Being in informal school and spending a lot of time with other children of the
same age, means there will be a lot of interaction, which leads to the
development of social skills.
d. If this problem occurs for a long time, it will cause the child to have less
experience which results in the child not always knowing how to interact or
behave around others and can lead to social anxiety in the future.
3. No Child Ability Measures
a. Children who use this learning system, of course, find it very difficult to
measure their abilities because children have no peers who act as rivals of
competitors around them.
b. In contrast to public schools which indirectly provide training to children to
compete positively with each other in order to achieve their goals.
c. In addition, competition is a positive thing because parents and teachers can
keep up with developments in lessons.
d. For example, if a child gets a C mark in a subject, then he knows that his
efforts are still insufficient and should work even harder to be able to achieve
excellent results in the future.
e. Therefore, if parents let their children have no competition, then they will not
have enthusiasm for their learning, in fact, it may cause more boredom to the
children.
CONCLUSION
Transition: Let me briefly summarise the main points,
1. Ordinary school and homeschooling, both have the same purpose, which is to
educate individuals in terms of spiritual, intellectual, emotional, and physical.
2. While homeschooling is not the main option, it provides a practical alternative for
parents, especially for busy working parents or self-employed parents.
3. Parents who are afraid of subjecting their children to the traditional schooling system
where there is increased indiscipline and decline in the quality of education and are
considering home-schooling for their children will need to be more creative.
4. They should endeavour to provide their children with opportunities to interact with the
outside world.
5. This will ensure that as they instil discipline in the children, they are also able to
prepare them to face the future in a world that is full of hostility.
