welcome

ALYSON GURNEY What are the chief benefits of a house?
The late French philosopher Gaston
On the grounds of a Rehoboth vacation retreat designed Bachelard posed and answered this
by architect Robert M. Gurney, a private walkway leads question in his 1958 book, The
over the dunes to the beach. Poetics of Space. “The house,” he
wrote, “shelters day-dreaming, the
house protects the dreamer, the
house allows one to dream in peace.”
As we wrap up this special Architecture issue, I find Bachelard’s
words remarkably relevant. More than the sum of walls, floors,
brick and stone, the homes we profile are indeed poetry in 3-D,
conjured by design teams to uplift and inspire residents through
light, form and spirit of place. In each case, the architects not only
responded to practicalities, but also deliberated over every detail
that would affect how the finished abodes make their owners feel.

In “English Country Redux,” architect Stephen Vanze and
colleagues revived a centuries-old log cabin on the site of a
new Virginia residence. Today, occupants can gather around
the restored hearth—now cast in a 21st-century context—and
contemplate those who came before them on the land.

Architect Carmel Greer abstracted traditional forms in her
design of a new Bethesda home. As you’ll see in “Simply Chic,”
the sculptural, floating staircase she carved out at its center
leaves the residents in awe every time they travel between floors.
“It’s our mini-Guggenheim,” marvels owner Julie Geyer. And in
“French Twist,” architect Greg Palmer sparked wonder with a
stately, groin-vaulted gallery that he orchestrated in his creation
of an Old World-style Virginia manor.

In our cover story, architect Robert Gurney and associates
played up the drama of a Rehoboth property with views of the
beach and Silver Lake. They pored over computer and physical
models to figure out how to flood the interiors with natural
light—a benefit that, Gurney contends, “makes a huge difference
in how people feel in a space.” The final reward, as you’ll
discover in “Double Vision,” is a vacation escape that blurs the
lines between its interiors and seaside surroundings, enabling the
owners to decompress upon arrival. Whether they’re watching
waves lap the shore from the deck or reading in the study as
the setting sun ignites the lake, this modern getaway no doubt
inspires them to dream in peace.

STACY ZARIN GOLDBERG

Designer Liz Levin elevated a vintage Northwest DC home with low ceilings by cladding the foyer in Schumacher’s Acanthus Stripe Sisal in
a charcoal colorway. “I wanted a vertical design to visually stretch the walls; this textured grass cloth was neutral but packed a punch,”
she relates. With its crisp-white acanthus motif, she adds, “it took the room to the next level.” See more grass cloth on the next page.

PAISLEY
POWER

An old-meets-new
collaboration

British designer Paul Smith has paired
with the textile house Maharam to create
Paisley Brocade. Inspired by London’s
Hyde Park, the pattern juxtaposes raised
motifs that reference Old World needle-
point with bold digital art. The fabric is
shown here on a denim jacket ($775)
and denim trousers ($475), both part of
Smith’s Autumn/Winter ’21 collection.

A Towson favorite gets an update

Perennial recently reopened after a major makeover by Baltimore designer
Patrick Sutton. He wrapped the restaurant in a garden courtyard and
verandah, then brought the outdoors in with a conservatory-like dining room
(top, right) featuring cozy banquettes and lanterns by Hudson Valley Light-
ing. Sutton clad the bar (right) in bleached walnut; shelving niches are lined
with slabs of book-matched stone. Chef Jay Rohlfing (top, left) focuses on
locally sourced fare, including Utz-Crusted Halibut (above, right). Mixologist
Andrew Nichols crafted the menu of cocktails (above, left). 1 Olympic Place,
