TEACHING PHILOSOPHY
As an educator, I believe that students should be actively involved in what they need for learning with importance placed on viewing students as individual people. I think that individuals have a lot to add to the classroom based on personal experiences and background. The content being learned needs to be viewed as valuable to the learner. Learning should be active, involve problem solving, and experiences. These beliefs align most closely to progressivism and incorporate Malcolm Knowles’ Theory of Andragogy and Kolb’s Experiential Learning Theory. These methods advocate for the role of teacher as a facilitator of learning and are well-suited to adult learners.
In progressivism, education focuses on the whole individual and lessons are built on students’ questions. A progressivist styles supports experiential learning situations such as real life clinical and simulation.
Malcolm Knowles’ Theory of Andragogy is well-suited to nursing students as it specifically addresses the needs of adult learners. Its four principles align with my belief that experience is one of the best learning vehicles and that content needs to be relevant to the learner.
Kolb’s Experiential Learning Theory states that the essence of adult learning is making sense of experiences. Adults learn best when they learn by doing. Better learning takes place when they are directly involved with—“experiencing”—the learning instead of memorizing numbers and definitions from books.
The needs of adult learners are very different that children learners. Adults have life experiences that have shaped their views and understandings of how the world works and these need to be accounted for in the classroom. My philosophy is rooted in this.
