The 2023 ASCO Annual Meeting held in June was an all-access pass to join global cancer experts and to discover the latest innova-
tions in cancer research and education. This year's program featured over 200 sessions complementing Dr. Eric Winer's Presiden-
tial theme Partnering With Patients: The Cornerstone of Cancer Care and Research. DMOH has had an outstanding year, with many
of our staff and learners receiving significant awards and showcasing poster sessions, presentations and co-authoring content.

Launch of the Cancer Clinical Research Unit (CCRU)
Convergence Centre

The Cancer Clinical Research Unit (CCRU) Convergence Centre opened in June for its first patients. This dedicated clinical
research facility is the first of its kind at UHN, and will support Princess Margaret’s translational medicine initiatives, and its
clinical research enterprise.

The CCRU Convergence Centre hosts a patient lounge, 8 blood collection bays, and 8 exam rooms. The unit has direct
access to the CCRU Correlative Studies Laboratory, allowing rapid collection and processing of correlative research samples,
maximizing efficiency and sample quality. In addition to blood collection, the unit is outfitted to support the collection of
non-image guided biopsies, such as punch biopsies and aspirates, patient rooms for post-treatment monitoring and pK
collections, and priority access to private rooms to consent patients to studies exploring translational research.

To elevate the patient experience, patients will be welcomed into a dedicated space where they are at the centre of their
research care. Research staff will meet their patients in the Convergence Centre to complete research activities, and
patients will have the opportunity to rest and recharge in the lounge between appointments.

A large thank-you to the Princess Margaret Foundation for supporting this initiative, Brad Wouters and the CFI Awards
team, Aaron Schimmer for providing space, Peter Ashton, and Steven Corfe and the Facilities team for the project manage-
ment and our patient partners who helped co-design and inspired this one-of-a-kind space.
In addition, a very special thank-you to Marcia Flynn-Post, Cassandra Mayor, Vanessa Speers, Susanna Sellmann, Heather
Cole, Katherine Karakasis, Kamal Garcha, and Pamela Degendorfer for all the phenomenal work that has gone into bringing
the Convergence Centre from idea to reality.

Our patients and Princess Margaret Research benefit from our collaborative efforts, and ongoing commitment to
Conquering Cancer Together.

In preparation for regular operations, the CCRU Convergence Centre soft opening will initially support studies with support
from CCRU PK and CSP Teams. Congratulations.

of mitochondrial DNA mutations
in AML development”. Somatic
mutations in mitochondrial DNA

their role in cancer development is
controversial and unclear. In this project, we will use newly
developed tools to introduce specific mtDNA mutations in
hematopoietic cells and determine the impact of the muta-

engineered cells. Our project will unveil key insights into the Congratulations to Dr. Gopila Gupta for winning the best

Valentina Bruno

Dr. Valentina Bruno is a paediatric nephrologist with interest in renal
replacement therapies, glomerular diseases and complement-mediated
disorders. She completed her medical degree and general paediatric
training at the University Federico II in Naples, Italy, and her paediatric
nephrology fellowship at The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids), Univer-
sity of Toronto, ON, Canada.

Dr. Bruno was the inaugural “Complement-Mediated Diseases and
Apheresis” fellow at the University of Toronto (2021-2023) under the
supervision of Drs. Christoph Licht and Christopher Patriquin. This
fellowship provided her with the opportunity of gaining unique insights
into the pathogenesis of complement-mediated diseases and their
treatments, expertise which will ultimately contribute to improving the
clinical outcomes and the quality of life of patients with complement-mediated disorders. During her fellowship,
Dr. Bruno engaged in a basic-science project focusing on the role of the complement system in the pathogen-
esis of primary membranous nephropathy, by using an in-vitro model of immortalized human podocytes. Her
research in the laboratory of Dr. Christoph Licht led to the successful completion of a Master of Science (MSc)
degree at the University of Toronto in August 2022, and was awarded the prestigious Clinician-Scientist Training
Program Fellowship at the SickKids Research Institute. Dr. Bruno also received the best basic science award
at the Young Investigators Forum of the 3rd Toronto Complement Conference (TCC 2022), and at the Annual
Meeting of the Canadian Association of Paediatric Nephrology (2023).

What do you like most about your job?
It allows me to translate my research findings into clinical practice, with the ultimate goal of ensuring the best
care to children with kidney disease. I firmly believe that children are the most inspirational patients, able to
respond to illness in an unexpected way. Having the opportunity to help and support them during their most
vulnerable time is a true privilege.

What’s a fun fact about you that others may not know?
When I was a child I wanted to become an elementary school teacher. Growing up my dreams have changed
somewhat, but I knew from the very beginning I wanted to take care of children.

What do you enjoy doing when you’re
not working?
I love travelling, experiencing new cultures
and capturing the unexpected moments!

What is the best advice you have ever
received?
Don’t follow the crowd. Always be yourself
and advocate your ideas.

Hannah Cherniawsky

Hannah Cherniawsky is originally from Edmonton but had been living
in Vancouver for the past 3 years before moving to Toronto. She has
become very weak in the cold! Hannah trained in Hematology, and
then Transplant and Leukemia. She is fulfilling her goal of getting more
experience with CAR T-cell therapy as we work to set up a provincial
program in BC. She is married to an amazing high school teacher who
is the millennial version of Bill Nye.

What do you like most about your job?
I enjoy the detective work of hematology as both a diagnostic and
therapeutic specialty.

What’s a fun fact about you that others may not know?
I’m a huge fan of documentaries, podcasts and naps.

What do you enjoy doing when you’re not working?
Anyone who walks past my desk knows my dog (Ellie – the queen
of Toronto) is my life. Together we love rock climbing and running!

What is the best advice you have ever received?
I’m sure people can relate to the amount of solicited and unsolicited advice we receive. I think
it is important to question advice that may be based on someone else’s idea of you rather
than what you really want. I was told by a mentor that I would be bored in hematology and
needed to do ICU. I am forever grateful I did not listen to that advice.
