MESSAGE FROM THE
LEADERSHIP

Greetings Brothers,
I hope this message finds you well and in good health!
It is with great honor and humility to accept serving as the Junior Vice Polemarch for the Middle
Eastern Province for the current fraternal year. For over 110 years, our noble Fraternity has
provided an opportunity to men like you and me to aim for our highest potential, achieve the
impossible, and build everlasting bonds with one another as we live our lives as Kappa men.
Over the next few months, the UG Provincial Leadership and I will be implementing our plan of
action called MEP STRONG. This plan intends to turn our current weaknesses into strengths and
combat any threats we face by taking advantage of our provided opportunities. As we continue
moving our Fraternity forward, I challenge all brothers in the MEP to be their BEST. When
every brother aims to be their best, whether in the Fraternity or their everyday lives, our
province
will become the standard of the Fraternity, and our impact will be felt all around the world. As a
province, we have proven ourselves resilient during this pandemic. I look forward to celebrating
our upcoming Province Founders’ Day Weekend in Durham as they celebrate a special
milestone. I also look forward to coming together in the spring for our next Province Council
Meeting. In the coming months, we will witness the unimaginable and reap successes like never
before. Nupes, it’s time for us to be the BEST!
Yours in the Bond,
Brother Arthur Claiborne
Junior Province Vice Polemarch

113th

Elder Watson
Diggs Awardee
Brother Joseph K.

Davis Jr
Celebration

The Elder Watson Diggs Award is one of the highest awards available to a member of the Fraternity, Inc.
Named after our most revered founder, the Elder Watson Diggs Award recognizes the outstanding
contributions of our members. It embodies a legacy of greatness - recognition of those who have
overcome adversity in order to advance the fraternity.
The Achievement Commission reviews all petitions and recommends no more than five candidates to
the Grand Board for approval. This past summer at the 85th Virtual Grand Chapter Meeting our very
own 19th Middle Eastern Province Polemarch Joseph King Davis, Jr. was selected as the 113th Elder
Watson Diggs Awardee. On August 7th the Durham (NC) Alumni Chapter and the Alpha Kappa
Foundation hosted a reception to celebrate this great honor. Brothers, friends and family gathered in
Durham for a good time. Brother Davis was initiated during the spring of 1976 at the Alpha Kappa
Chapter on the campus of North Carolina Central University. He has been a strong leader for our
province and his current Durham (NC) Alumni Chapter. He was appointed the 19th Province Polemarch
and is currently the Province Chaplain. Brother Davis has served in other leadership capacities on the
province and chapter levels. In fact, Brother Davis has over 40 years of uninterrupted service to this
Province as an officer. His influence is so strong that the annual Province Undergraduate Leadership
Conference is named in his honor. In his professional life he has over 43 years of experience in the
education field, much of it in a leadership role. His leadership within the church is just as strong.
Brother Davis is a lifelong member of the St. Mark African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church. Presently,
he serves as the 5th International President of the Assembly of Christian Educators, currently the
Durham District Director of Christian Education Ministry and the District Director of Men’s Ministry,
(Sons of Varick) for 27 AMEZ Churches.

Past 20th MEP Polemarch Brother Pierce Scholarship

On Wednesday, June 23, 2021, the Middle Eastern Province of Kappa Alpha Psi 20th Middle Eastern Province
Fraternity, Incorporated joined the Fayetteville-Fort Bragg Alumni and Epsilon Beta Polemarch Brother Melvin R.
Chapter brothers in celebrating the legacy for the past 20th Middle Eastern Province
Polemarch, the late Brother Melvin R. Pierce Endowed Scholarship. A special thanks to Pierce
Chancellor Darrell T. Allison, Fayetteville State University's 12th Administration, for
being so gracious in celebrating this great Bronco. He was a faithful Alumnus, Class of
1967, and an educator for 32 years and inspiring leader for Cumberland County
Schools. Representatives of the Endowed Scholarship Committee (Bro. Wesley
Fountain-FFBA, Brother Dr. Rodney McCrowre-Chapter Advisor, and FFBA) provided
observations favoring this endeavor. Brother Benjamin Cureton, FFBA Polemarch, and
the MEP's 23rd Province Polemarch, Brother Michael F. Brown, gave astounding
remarks, detailing his leadership as a God-fearing man and innovator for education and
a voice for Kappa at large. On behalf of the Alumni Chapter and the Middle Eastern
Province, the Polemarch’s presented notable contributions in honor of Brother Pierce's
memory. He was in fact a positive role model who left a footprint for many to fill.
Standing to receive these gifts were his lovely wife, Silhouette Helen Pierce, and family.
The family revered him as an upright man, a loving husband of 46 years, a proud father
of three that included a host of grandchildren. While we think about what a "True
Kappa" signifies, this bond-fraternity speaks of Brother Pierce. Brother Pierce is a
spring 1965 initiate of the Fayetteville State University Chapter, the Epsilon Beta of
Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated and was a Life Member. Brother Pierce was a
dedicated member of the Fayetteville Fort Bragg Chapter. During his time with the
chapter, he served in numerous offices to include Historian, Guide Right Director and
Chapter Polemarch. Brother Pierce served faithfully for many years in the Middle
Eastern Province to include Province Vice Polemarch and as the 20th Middle Eastern
Province Polemarch from 1997-2003. Throughout his professional years, Brother
Pierce served as middle school teacher, a high school assistant principal and retired as
an elementary principal. He received a Master of Administration Degree from North
Carolina A & T State University and an Education Specialist Degree from East Carolina
University. During his education career, Brother Pierce received Assistant Principal of
the Year for the Fayetteville City Schools and Principal of the Year in the Southview
District. Brother Pierce’s humanitarian work was exhibited through his service to
community, civic and charitable organizations. He was a life member of the National
Association for the Advancement of Colored People.

11

He was also a member of the E. E. Smith
Senior High School Think Tank Advisory
Committee, Fayetteville City Parks and
Recreation Board, Cumberland County
Planning and Zoning Commission, Seabrook
Community Watch, State Employees
Advisory Board, North Carolina Retired
School Personnel Association, Fayetteville
State University National Alumni Association,
and the Fayetteville State University Athletic
Club. Brother Pierce was a member of Mt.
Sinai Baptist Church where he served as a
deacon, member of the usher board, Sunday
School Teacher and superintendent. He later
joined College Heights Presbyterian Church
where he faithfully served as elder and
member of Presbyterian Men. As our Kappa
Alpha Psi hymn remains to be true, O noble
Kappa Alpha Psi, The Pride of all our hearts.
True manliness, fidelity, thou ever dost
impart. The source of our delights and joys,
and happiness thou art, O noble Kappa Alpha
Psi, from thee we will never part was the last
call to our dear Brother Melvin R. Pierce.
Rest in Phi Nu Pi until we meet again!
Eternally and Fraternally Yours in the bond,

CIAA LEGEND BROTHER RAYMOND MCDOUGAL

Brother Raymond McDougal (Alpha Epsilon 1958) was presented with his official cream 50-year member blazer to
commemorate his 50 plus years in the fraternity. Brother McDougal is a 1958 initiate of the Alpha Epsilon chapter of
Kappa Alpha Psi. He joined the fraternity during his days at Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, NC. This was a
special moment as his son Brother Raymond McDougal Jr (Epsilon Beta 1992) presented this to him along with
brothers initiated through the Epsilon Beta chapter who were students on campus during his career at Fayetteville
State University. Members of the Fayetteville- Fort Bragg (NC) and brothers of the Middle Eastern Province were
part of the presentation as well. His son Brother Raymond McDougal Jr consulted with many brothers before
helping set up this recognition. He consulted with Past Middle Eastern Province Polemarch Carlos Watson, Middle
Western Province Board of Directors member Marvin Pettway, Senior Kappa Affairs Chairman John Stewart ,
Achievement Academy Chairman Dr. Christopher Johnson, Middle Eastern Province Senior Kappa Committee
chairman Sam Greene, and Dr. Rodney McCrowe from the FSU College of Business and Economics. Special thanks
to Middle Eastern Province Polemarch Michael F. Brown and the province senior affairs committee for their
support.Brother McDougal is an achiever in every sense of the word. Born in the early 1930’s in south Florida. One
of his earliest obstacles was losing both his parents before the age of three and having to live with different families.
Brother McDougal, was an All-Conference and All-State performer in football and basketball at Carver High School
in Delray Beach, Florida. His coach, a civil rights activist, teacher, and principal Charles Spencer Pompey was a
great positive influence on his life. Mr. Pompey helped Brother McDougal's path to college. Brother McDougal has
one of the most storied histories in the 100 plus year existence of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association
(CIAA). He was a two sport star at Johnson C. Smith University during his playing days and a coaching legend at
Fayetteville State University. A 1958 graduate of Johnson C. Smith University, he was a four-year scholarship athlete
in football and golf. Brother McDougal played halfback and quarterback on the Golden Bulls football team. As a
member of JCSU golf squad, McDougal was the individual winner of four golf tournaments. His success continued
beyond his college career. Brother McDougal left school to serve the country in the US Army. He returned to school
later. While stationed in Guam in 1955 he won three golf tournaments. He would also go on to receive his Master’s
in Health and Safety from Indiana University. He started his coaching career as a prep coach in South Carolina and
Florida. He was a junior college mentor at Volusia County Community College and Bethune-Cookman College while
in Daytona Beach, Florida. At Bethune-Cookman, Brother McDougal was the head basketball

coach for five years and an assistant
coach on the football field. In 1970 he
became the head football coach for both
the Fayetteville State University football
team and the newly formed golf program.
He took a break from coaching golf and
returned to the golf program in 1993 after
11 seasons as the head football coach and
even one season as the interim men's
basketball coach.
In twenty years, Brother McDougal has
led the Fayetteville State University golf
team to 16 conference titles and 6 PGA
National Minority Division II golf titles He
has coached 5 CIAA MVPs and All-
Americans, 8 CIAA Tournament Medalists,
and 44 All-CIAA student-athletes. Under
his guidance the FSU golf team has
received 8 Sears Championship Trophies.
Brother McDougal and the Broncos
participated in 7 NCAA Division II Super
Regionals, finishing as high as third in
2007 and second in 2009. The second
place finish at the 2009 regional
tournament earned the team its first
NCAA Tournament berth. The 2009
tournament berth was historical as the
team was the first HBCU golf team to
make the championship in almost 40
years. Brother McDougal has coached 5
Golf All-Americans and CIAA Most
Valuable Players, eight CIAA Tournament
Medalists and 44 All-CIAA Performers. He
has also earned 12 CIAA Coach of the Year
awards. He retired in 2014 and in 2018 he
was inducted into the Central
Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA)
Hall of Fame.

Byron Kenneth Armstrong Scholars Awardee -Brother Olatidoye

At the 85th Grand Chapter Meeting, Brother Olufemi Olatidoye was honored as the 46th recipient of the
Byron Kenneth Armstrong Scholars Award (Summa Cum Laude). This award is the highest award for academic
achievement given to undergraduate brothers in the Fraternity. Brother Olatidoye has been a stellar student
during his undergraduate matriculation. He graduated from NC A&T State University in May 2021 with
Bachelors of Science in Chemistry where he maintained a 4.0 grade point average for all four years. At A&T,
Brother Olatidoye was a Lewis and Elizabeth Dowdy Scholar, a member of the University Honors Program,
and he served in leadership positions with the Minority Association of Pre-Medical Students and the
Chemistry Club. Brother Olatidoye also worked as an Aggie Ambassador and a Chemistry Supplemental
instructor in his college years. In the Chemistry department at A&T Brother Olatidoye has been conducting
inorganic chemistry research with Dr. Bishnu Bastakoti. He was recently published in the New Journal of
Chemistry as a lead author on a research paper about nanomaterial thin films, making him the first
undergraduate student in the Chemistry department to be published as a lead author in a high-class research
journal. As a member of the Alpha Nu Chapter, Brother Olatidoye served as the chairman of the Academic and
Achievement Committee and he was instrumental in starting weekly chapter study hall sessions in an effort
to increase the overall chapter grade point average. Brother Olatidoye has been recognized for his
achievements in several capacities. He was recognized as a Spring 2019 MTA Kappa Scholar at the 78th Middle
Eastern Province Council Meeting. Later that year he was awarded the Kappa Alpha Psi Foundation, Inc. Open
Studies Scholarship and in 2020 he was awarded the Middle Eastern Province Scholarship. In April of 2021 he
was given the NC A&T College of Science and Technology’s Most Outstanding Honors Student Award. This
Fall, Brother Olatidoye will be starting medical school at the Columbia University Vagelos College of
Physicians and Surgeons in New York City. He is considering a future career in surgery and he is interested in
mitigating health disparities that are prevalent in underserved communities as well as increasing Black
representation within medicine and other STEM fields. Brother Olatidoye enjoys inspiring others to strive
towards academic excellence and professional achievement. He is extremely grateful to be a recipient of the
prestigious Byron Kenneth Armstrong Scholars Award and he is honored to be a part of this great Fraternity
that values his academic successes. He hopes that his recognition as a Byron Kenneth Armstrong awardee
can encourage others to excel in their academics and push themselves to be the best that they can be.

Epsilon Beta celebrating their Charter Members

Discrimination against students of race persisted after World War II, especially in the 1960s. Willis B.
McLeod, the 20th Student Body President, was energized by the unrest and led a Civil Rights anti-
segregation march with roughly 200 students from Fayetteville States Teachers College. While striving to
gain equal rights for African Americans in the South, it seemed to be the most challenging times during the
civil rights movement. When nine young men at Fayetteville State Teachers College adopted this mindset, it
ignited a fire to establish a class atmosphere with a keen interest to support their local community. Insofar
as they may leave a cherished legacy. They were so passionate about education and leadership that it was
important for these individuals to promote innovation among the student body. They were later initiated into
Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated after consulting with the Fayetteville Fort Brag-Pope Air Force
Base Alumni Chapter (from earlier years). Certainly, April 14, 1962, was a great day to become a Kappa. We
are delighted to stand on the shoulders of these visionaries. On Saturday, April 17, 2021, brothers had the
opportunity to commemorate their fifty-plus years of service to the Fraternity. Because of this lineage,
Epsilon Beta will soon celebrate sixty years of achievement. Each member was honored with a declaration
from Brother Lascel Webley (Middle Eastern Province Senior Vice Polemarch), Brother Samuel Green (MEP
Senior Kappa Chairman), Brother Justice Rushing (Epsilon Beta Polemarch), and Brother Dr. Rodney
McCrowre (Chapter Advisor). Additional members in attendance were Fayetteville Bragg Alumni, Brother
Dwayne Campbell (Immediate Past Polemarch), Brother Roberto Bryan (Vice Polemarch), Brother Victor
Sharpe (Historian), Brother Marvin Keller (Keeper of Records) and Brother Judge Stephen Stokes. Brother
Ulysses Taylor (Interim Dean of the Broadwell College of Business and Economics at Fayetteville State
University), Brother Antwaunn Shaw, Brother Edwin Garrett IV, Brother Michael McDonald, and Brother
Adrian Williams were among the Epsilon Beta Alumni present. To name a few accomplishments, Brother Dr.
Willis B. McLeod (Chancellor Emeritus), a 1964 graduate of Fayetteville State University and former Student
Government Association President. In 1995, he was the first alumnus to serve as the institution's ninth
Chancellor. He has over 30 years of experience in education. Brother Dr. Jesse F. Williams, (FSU Alumnus),
attended John Hopkins University, where he obtained his master’s in public health administration.

19

This was followed by earning a medical degree from Howard University's College of Medicine. He
specialized in family medicine, public health, and general preventive medicine. As a family practitioner,
he cared for his patients of all ages and at all stages of their lives. After 25 years of service, he retired as
the Medical Director of the Cumberland County Health Department in Fayetteville, North Carolina. John
F. Smith Sr. served as Superintendent of Bertie County Schools. It was a historic moment for Bertie
County when John F. Smith Sr. was named the county's first black Superintendent of public schools.
Kappa Alpha Psi will continue to hold on to its fundamental purpose of Achievement in Every Field of
Human Endeavor. To this end, the founding members of Epsilon Beta will forever sing thy praises o’er
and o’er. As aspiring leads, we’ll long for thee and toil until we reach that Golden Shore.

Fraternally and eternally…

Yours in the bond,

Fayetteville Fort Bragg Alumni

Q & A with Brother Atkinson: Mel Davis Awardee and Undergraduate Guide Right Director of the year

What are the National Guide Right and Mel Davis awards? L’Quaan Atkinson, Alpha Nu 2019
Both awards are National level Guide Right Awards. The Mel
Davis Award is given to the best undergraduate guide right Background: Originally from Greenville,
director/chairman, named after a brother, who pioneered a lot North Carolina. Served in the Kappa
of great things during the earlier days of the Guide Right League program for all four years of high
program. The National Guide Right Chapter of the Year award is school. Served as the Middle Eastern
given to the highest achieving undergraduate chapter in the Province Strategus for the 2020-21
Fraternity. Both awards are often overlooked but they are both Fraternal Year.
very honorable awards.
How do you think you obtained the awards? North Carolina A&T State University, Class
Well for starters, when I took over as the Guide Right Chair at of 2021, B.S. in Civil Engineering
Alpha Nu this past school year, I already knew the importance of
Guide Right across the city of Greensboro, NC. However, I 22
noticed all undergraduate brothers in the province overlooked
the importance of our relationship with guide right programs.
Most undergrad brothers would use them for easy community
service and forget the fact that we can relate to them the most
since we are closer to them in age than most alumni brothers.
So, at Alpha Nu made sure that my chapter brothers knew the
importance of this. We established a great relationship with
Guide Right program members here in Greensboro as well as
made ourselves readily available for other cities across the
province. At the time, I was serving as Middle Eastern Province
strategus, I made sure to relay the same info to all
undergraduate chapters.
What does it mean to win these awards?
It means a lot, honestly. I was introduced to Kappa Alpha Psi
from joining the Kappa League program in my hometown of
Greenville, NC. I served as the Kappa League president for two
straight years. After enrolling at NC, A&T, I was blessed to join
the ranks of Kappa. I immediately immersed myself in the work
of Guide Right in addition to other things my chapter needed
over the past two years. Winning this feels like I’m heading in the
right direction.
What is one thing Brothers should know about Guide Right
that they may not know already?
Brothers should know that through our Kappa league program
we are positively molding the next generations of leaders. We as
Kappa men across the country may not realize that we can
singlehandedly change a lot of problems with Black/brown
people in the U.S., including but not limited to; political
corruption, learning deficiencies, and family functionality. We
just have to take our blessing seriously.
What’s next for you? In the Fraternity? Career/Business?
I will continue to grow in the field of civil engineering for now.
This includes obtaining my engineering license, a few
construction safety certifications and possibly attending
graduates’ school for a Master of Engineering if I can get it paid
for. (My dream Grad school is Duke University). As for Kappa, I
will always devote my time to Guide Right, but I will also give a
helping hand to anything my chapter needs. In addition to this, I
will work closely with Brother Newkirk and the Province GR
Committee, as well as at the national level.

Thomas J. Watson
Fellowship

Brother Langston Stephens, Polemarch of the Pi Mu Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi at
Davidson College recently was awarded the Thomas J. Watson Fellowship! This very
prestigious award is given to graduating seniors who look to pursue a year of
independent study abroad. During his time abroad he will be researching affordable
housing and broadening his perspective on new ways to tackle housing issues.
Along with this award, Langston has received the 2020-2021 Undergraduate Kappa
Man of the year for the Middle Eastern Province. Throughout his tenure at Pi Mu the
chapter has received National Chapter of the Year and Provincial Chapter of the Year.
He currently serves as Vice President of the Black Coalition on Campus and a college
service/leadership fellow. He is now campaigning to be the next Guy L. Grant
Awardee at this upcoming Conclave in July. Let’s support Brother Stephens and
promote his Achievements to receive this national recognition.

Pi Mu Colony - Wingate University
Serving their community.

In Charlotte the homeless population living in hotels and motels has reached an alarming rate. In order
to make ends meet, many families will head to motels because they rent on a daily, weekly and even
monthly basis. Charlotte was already facing a serious affordable housing crisis before the pandemic,
and since Covid 19 swept through our nation, this crisis has only grown worse. Charlotte communities
have come together to provide aid for those in severe need. The McKinney-Vento act is a federal law
that makes sure children who aren’t fortunate enough to have permanent housing go to school. When
the brothers of Kappa Alpha Psi at Wingate University (Pi Mu Colony) heard of children and members of
the Charlotte community were in need of help, they did not hesitate to jump in the action and lend a
helping hand to those severely affected by Covid 19. These gentlemen joined a collaboration of
organizations to provide food, clothing, school supplies and other resources to members of the Hidden
Valley community. These young men saw people in need and immediately stepped in to serve the
community in any way they could. When asked why they were so persistent in helping those in need,
Polemarch Damani Spencer had this to say “We saw people in our own backyard needing help and it
didn’t feel right to continue our lives knowing we could provide aid for those who need it”. The Covid 19
pandemic has created a large amount of challenges for people across the country, and these three
young Nupes certainly, played their part in trying to better their community.
