contributed to this issue. Your
contribution is felt beyond

Kappa Brothers,
The beginning of 2019 has been emotionally challenging for the
brothers of Raleigh Alumni Chapter. We mourned the loss of
our dear fraternity brother Edwin Dawson who entered the
Invisible Chapter at such an early age. He leaves behind to miss
him his wife, two young sons, parents, sibling, family members,
fraternity brothers and friends. Our Brothers Ken Moore and
Julian Haywood’s fathers passed and Joseph Lewter’s mother
passed. We have prayed for them and shared our condolences
knowing that nothing we can do or say will ease their grief and
sorrow.
We have done our best to be supportive of our brothers as they
go through these difficult times. In these times of grief and
sorrow we have been taught, “Trust in the LORD with all your
heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways
submit to him, and he will make your paths straight”. As
brothers of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. who are united in
the bond of this fraternity we look to God, to the legacy of our
Founders and to each other as the source of our strength,
wisdom and hope.
While 2019 so far has been emotionally difficult we still have
work to do in meeting the challenge of Achievement in every
field of human endeavor. Our Guide Right team is training for
leadership through our Kappa League, Scholarship and
Beautillion programs. Our Kappa Charitable Trust Fund has
goals to meet and a strategic plan for serving our community.
The chapter continues to implement social action initiatives
and programs to serve our schools, military veterans, homeless
and our undergraduate brothers. On January 21st we
participated in the annual MLK march from the State Capital
building in downtown Raleigh. We held an interest meeting and
have eight Aspirants in the MTA program to join our chapter.
Our chapter Polemarch, Donzell Newkirk has decided to host
three meetings on the campuses of the two HBCU’s in Raleigh

and NC State. We held the first meeting on NC State’s campus. The
intent is to engage our undergraduate brothers where they are and
share
our commitment to their success On February 23rd, we secured a
charter bus and traveled to Charlotte for an NBA basketball
game. About a dozen Charlotte Alumni members met us there,
including former MEP Polemarch Carlos Watson, and we enjoyed
fellowship and a good basketball game. In March we will travel to
Asheville, NC for the Middle Eastern Province Council Meeting. In
June the Kappa Charitable Trust Fund will host its annual fundraiser
at the Kappa Center and it is billed as The Greatest Luau on Earth.
he Raleigh Alumni Chapter is taking care of the business of Kappa
even when our hearts are heavy and when the challenges are difficult.
We remember that our Founders faced difficult times and obstacles
in 1911 when our great fraternity began under the shackles of racism
and segregation. We are their heirs and it is our task to continue
their legacy of Achievement for future Kappa Men to embrace and
raise our Shield even higher.
Yours in the Bond,
Brother Clem Lacy

WRAL Coats For Kids Telethon
By Brother Polemarch Newkirk
A coat. It seems so basic. But thousands of children in
the WRAL viewing area needed warm winter wear for
the cold months.
Coats for the Children is WRAL’s major community
campaign to support families in need. This year marked
the 30th Annual Coats for the Children Telethon. They
ask viewers to donate gently used, clean coats, hats and
gloves to outfit children for winter or make a monetary
donation. For the second straight year the Capital City
Kappas volunteered their time answering the phones
and accepting donations. We also included the Greater Pictured Donzell Newkirk Polemarch of the Raleigh Alumni
Raleigh Kappa League this year. Polemarch Newkirk Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc and Kappa Charitable

agreed they wanted to end the year on a positive giving
note. Led by President Reginald Wright Esq. the KCTF

Major
History with a Minor in English
What made you choose your university to attend and major?
I chose North Carolina State for the opportunities I knew it would provide from internships, travel, clubs, as well as they, gave me a full
ride scholarship to attend. I chose to become a History major due to always having a fascination and interest in the history of the
world and analyzing how the world came to be where it is today and the patterns that show where it’ll go in the future.
Post-graduation plans?
My post-graduation plans are to take a year off before going to graduate school. I plan to work as well as work on an internship as well
during that year
In addition to Kappa were you involved in other activities on campus?
I am involved in the Society of Afrikcan American Culture as a general member where our goal is to help empower and improve the
black community and unifying it. I am also involved in the Peer Mentor program where I am assigned two to three incoming Freshman
and/or Sophomores, who are a part of the minority, and advise and mentor them about North Carolina State’s campus.
What brought you to Kappa?
The only ties to greekdom I had before knowing about Kappa were my mother who is a woman of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, she had
always told me what it meant to be a part of a Greek organization but I didn’t fully understand until high school where I met a man of
Kappa, named Rodney McCrowre. Brother McCrowre was one of my counselors in the school and upon meeting and getting to know
him I learned about how being a man of Kappa led to many great opportunities in his life as well as being someone who was influential
in another person’s life. I wanted those same opportunities for myself as well as the prestige that came with being a man of Kappa.
How has Kappa influenced you after becoming a member?
Once becoming a member I felt an obligation to be a better man in every aspect from education, personally, socially, and spiritually. I
didn’t want to take the opportunity of being a part of this great Klan for granted thus I after becoming a member I forced myself to be
more focused on building myself into a better man for myself and for Kappa as a whole
Interest/hobbies outside of Kappa?
My interests include reading I am an avid reader when I can find the time from reading science fiction, fantasy, historical fiction, etc. I
have some interest in the dance as well taking salsa, tango, and bachata classes.
In 10 years where and what would you like to be doing?
In 10 years, I will be established in my career as a professor of History teaching at an elite university.

Middle Eastern Province
2018 C Rodger Wilson Leadership Conference
Brother Charles Rodger Wilson was initiated into Kappa Alpha Psi through the Beta Chapter at
the University of Illinois in the spring of 1918. Brother Wilson served as our 16th Polemarch and
has made many contributions to the fraternity. The Undergraduate Leadership Conference was
renamed the C. Rodger Wilson Leadership Conference (CRWLC) in his honor. Annually this
conference is held by each province across the fraternity. It is used as a tool to train both new
and experienced members of the fraternity. On November 9th 2018 the Middle Eastern Province
held our 2018 CRWLC on the campus of Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, NC. The
university is a HBCU whose history dates back to the mid 1800’s and today is home to over 1,500
students. The host chapter was the Alpha Epsilon Chapter who call the campus home for over
ninety years. Leading into C Rodger Wilson the province held its’ Membership Training Academy
(MTA) intake for the fall. The province welcomed 53 new brothers into the bond. This conference
served as a good transition from MTA for these new brothers. Many valuable lessons were taught
this weekend that could be used in everyday life in and outside of the organization. Brothers
presented in four sessions held at the historic Biddle Hall which is the signature building on
campus. The sessions were as follows Diversity & Inclusion, Robert Rules of Order, Knowing your
Why, and Financial Literacy. All of the sessions were well put together, informative, and
entertaining. In addition to traditional presentations some were very interactive and required
crowd participation. The highlight of the weekend was a special visit from Grand Polemarch
Thomas L. Battles Jr. Grand Polemarch covered various important topics that effect our
Fraternity as a whole.
