The history of Raleigh Alumni is one steeped in tradition, high ideals, and
achievement. William Capehart, Thomas Conway, Sr., Dr. Cecil
Haliburton, Leonard B. Hardie, Harry Gil-Smythe, Glenwood Jones, W.M.
Perry, William T. “Buddy” Stroud, Dr. M. Watts, and L.L. Woods came
together to form the Raleigh Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi
Fraternity, Incorporated. On April 6, 1948, these 10 men obtained the
charter from the Grand Chapter in order to form the Raleigh Alumni
Chapter. These 10 men, who themselves were professionals, eduacators,
businessmen, and community leaders, helped carry on a great concept
which manifests itself in the …”idea that if we are going to be brothers, let
us be brothers on the best terms that we know; if we are going to bind
ourselves together, let it be around something that is strong enough to
hold us; if we are going to sing, let us sing about something that will have
a lasting refrain; if we drink a toast, let it be of something beyond the
trivial and the vulgar; let us exalt the theme of achievement. Reliance
would be placed upon high Christian ideals and the purpose of honorable
achievement in every field of human endeavor. The Fraternity would seek
to raise the sights of young black youths and stimulate them to
accomplishments higher than might otherwise not be realized or even
imagined…” It is this historical concept, dating back to the Founders at
Indiana University, that helped lay the foundation that Raleigh Alumni
continues to build upon to this day.
Under the national theme of “Training for Leadership”, the Raleigh
Alumni Chapter expresses a genuine concern for human development
towards Achievement in every field of human endeavor. By creating and
contributing to scholarship funds and community projects like the
Beautillion Militaire Leadership Training and Scholarship Program, and
through traditional programs such as Kappa Grants and Kappa Scholars,
the Raleigh Alumni Chapter has accepted its responsibility to the
community by assisting in the training and developement of our
members, our community, and our youth.
It is the desire of the Raleigh Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi
Fraternity, Inc. to stand true to our history, and to live up to the idea that
“whatever is done must be done well and in accordance with the highest
possible standards.” In the true spirit of Phi Nu Pi, it has been, and
continues to be, the desire or our chapter to prove itself to be an
outstanding chapter of a superior Fraternity whose members strive for
and inspire the true spirit of achievement.
