WE’VE WAITED ALL YEAR FOR THIS!

The summer months are upon us and that can only mean one thing. CAMP!
At the winter office, we cannot wait to get ready, pack up, and make the
TREK north to the magnificent Adirondack Mountains! We have been hard
at work all winter planning jaw-dropping tribal breaks, awesome special
events, and cool new songs!

IN THIS EDITION Speaking of songs, our theatre staff has already been hard at work planning
what should be an epic year in the SOUTHWOODS PLAYHOUSE. So once

COVID-19 & CAMP

A Note from Scott & Andrea

Dear Southwoods,
The entire SOUTHWOODS team trust that you and your extended families are healthy and navigating these crazy
times as best as possible. This Coronavirus crisis has, as predicted, “gotten worse before it gets better.” This is
creating quite the crazy ride for us all…
Trust that “Team SOUTHWOODS” is laser-focused on this issue. But, let me say right off the bat, if we have anything
to do with it, SOUTHWOODS will be open and our campers will not miss out on any of the fun of camp.
SOUTHWOODS will continue to be that safe place for children and staff to grow and play as always.
Given your stress and concern, we want to address a few points that may give you some relief and peace as you
think about the summer. Our plans are that camp will open. We have been in constant contact with our ER docs,
and top infectious disease doctors as well as following government suggestions and new regulations.
We have an amazing summer staff in place. We have committed to taking our return international staff when they
CAN get to us, but we have limited exposure to international staff who may not be able to arrive and have been
hiring additional domestic staff.
Perhaps your main question; “What happens to the money we’ve paid?” SOUTHWOODS will do what we have
always done – we will be fair to our camp families. You picked SOUTHWOODS for a reason. Our goal is to get back
to you by mid- May with answers on Camp and share what our options are for you on refunds if needed. Right this
minute money matters are on hold as we all need additional information. In the meantime, we will not collect any
additional money and will be pushing back our April and May invoices for payments. We will also process requests
for refunds based on these options at that time.
The news is starting to be more optimistic and on May 15, NYS will begin the un-pause process. We expect at that
time to also get an update on when and how the state plans to allow camps to open. Please know, our decision to
open will be based on if we can keep our campers and staff safe. Southwoods is planning to open and be the safe
place for children and staff to grow and play as always.
We also know that as one question is answered, several more are formed. We promise to continue to be in touch
with you. Scott sits on the National ACA board that in conjunction with Y-USA has hired a national organization to
review and prepare guidelines for opening. In this roll Scott has been in communication with the CDC, the NYS and
local governments to best understand when camp will be permitted to open and what additional safety protocols
will be put into place. We will communicate next steps with you when we have more clarity. Please stay patient
with us as we continue to navigate these challenging times, TOGETHER, with the best interest of our entire Camp
community at heart.
All Good Wishes,
Andrea & Scott

The Southwoods Mission Statement:
Southwoods is committed to empowering people. Our goal is to build confidence

and self-esteem by reinforcing positive human values. We achieve that goal
through cutting-edge programming implemented by a carefully selected and fully

trained staff whose investment in children, like our own, is unparalleled.

Hi ! My name is Raquel Nossel , I live in New York City and I just turned 11 years
old .

This will be my third summer at Southwoods camp and all I do is count down
the days unEl I get there again . “ I love being in the water on Paradox Lake” so
of course my favorite acEviEes are swimming , tubing and waterskiing (which I perfected last summer ).
This summer I am looking forward to tribal and pushing my gymnasEcs skills.

There are many reasons why I Love being part of Southwoods , for one I have created some very strong
friendships which remain throughout the school year . Another example , if it were not for camp I would
have never tried so many different acEviEes that I truly love . This year I am now on my school
basketball team and I have also started playing lacrosse .

Thank you Southwoods for making me the happy, independent, confident camper I am today .

-Rocky Nossel

Line Up! Girls Side!

Hello Southwoods! Lauren Hohman
It’s that Eme again… CAMP TIME! The best Eme of year for those of us geVng to make the move up
to Southwoods soon. Time to find my crazy hats, tutus, neon socks, unicorn onesie and get packing. In Girls
order to help you gear up for camp and make the most of SPECIAL EVENTS, TRIBAL, and ELECTIVES Head Counselor
this summer, I have provided the following “Top 5” list:

Top 5 Ways to Make the Most of the Southwoods Program
1. Start thinking about what acEviEes you want to try for the first Eme. We have all kinds of fun

elecEves at camp! You can choose from woodworking, videography, soccer, theater, lego building,
golf, waterfront… the list goes on and on!
2. Begin warming up your voice for Tribal War. To do this, I recommend running around the house
yelling, “1, 2, 3, 4… WE WANT TRIBAL WAR!” as loudly as you can.
3. PracEce your sweet dance moves. There’s no tellin’ when a Southwoods Dance Party will break
out! Wait unEl you see Johnny’s newest move - he’s been working on his TikTok dances all winter.
4. Be prepared for anything - we LOVE surprises. You never know what exciEng events will make up
our Special Event Days this year… or how Tribal will break! Ah - the suspense is killing me!
5. Great ready to experience the BEST 4 weeks of your life! Come to camp ready to try new things
and have a ridiculous amount of fun.

Summer cannot get here soon enough! See ya soon, Southwoods!

Line up! Boys Side!

We know this time is a little weird for everyone, which can only make the memories that we are going to
create this summer that much more amazing to think about! Speaking of thinking, I have done a little extra
lately and I wanted to share some questions that you can start thinking about (along with my responses):

Johnny Reinke 1. Have you begun to think about this summer? (Absolutely- I cannot wait!)
2. What do you want to try for the first time? (I want to learn how to really dance. This is definitely
Boys
Head Counselor an ongoing goal.)
3. What passion or skill do you want to improve? (I really want to improve my dribbling at basketball

and mad science; I have never done that.)
4. What is the first thing you want to do when you get to the waterfront? (The Wibit, of course!)
5. What trek activity are you looking forward to most? (I want to go a little higher on the climbing

wall than last year.)
6. What do you think the song of the summer will be? (Hmm, I need to put a little more thought into

this one….MILK is always a classic!)

If you haven’t thought of all of your responses yet, it’s OK. We still have plenty of time! Don’t worry. But it
is no secret that there is so much fun to be had this summer; it may seem difficult figuring out where to
start. That’s why we will be here for you. We will be alongside for your entire journey helping in any way
we can! This summer has the chance to be the best, most memorable summer of our lives! I cannot wait to
see you soon! Remember, until next time, KEEP DREAMING BIG!

Chocolate Covered Strawberries

During these challenging times, what could be better than making a fun, sweet treat!?! Chocolate covered strawberries give you the
best of both worlds, along with a fun activity to do with the family!

Ingredients:
-One 1 lb box of strawberries, stems left on, washed
-Approximately 3 oz dark chocolate chips
-Optional 3/4 tsp coconut oil (helps prevent drying out)
Feel free to double the recipe

You will need:
-Paper towels
-Sheet pan, lined with parchment paper

Directions:
-Pat the strawberries dry thoroughly- if they are moist the chocolate coating wont stick.
-Mix the chocolate chips with the coconut oil. Melt the chocolate in a double boiler or microwave at 30 sec increments, stirring the
bottom between increments to prevent burning.
-Pour the melted chocolate into a bowl if it’s not already in a bowl. Place the lined baking sheet on the table by the dried strawberries.
-Hold the stem of a strawberry and dip it in the chocolate, then twist coming out. Let excess drip off. Place it on the parchment paper
lined sheet pan. Repeat with remaining strawberries.
-Place in the fridge until set, about one hour.
-Then, eat up and enjoy!

From Adam’s Angle

Adam Kaufman As we look and listen outside each day, we can hear the birds in the air and
Director of see plants budding, just another sign we are one step closer to summer! I am
OperaEons so excited to be back on the shores of Paradox Lake for my 10th summer at
Southwoods. Each summer has been unique and the experiences and
relaKonships we all build at Southwoods are invaluable. This spring has been
a challenge for all of us; between schools going online and parents working
from home. Camp this summer will be an important release for everyone. A
chance for old friends to reconnect and new friendships to be formed in a
safe and controlled environment that can only be found at Southwoods.
We have been working hard in the winter office (from our homes) to hire a
unique, diverse and AWESOME staff for this summer who are so excited to
meet each and every camper. Our staff come to us from all over the country
and bring numerous new and fun ideas for us to incorporate into our
progressive program. We are working on planning some new exciKng
programs this summer, including new elecKves and special event days. Our
enKre staff team is SO EXCITED to bring these programs to life for the enKre
Southwoods community. See you in just a few short months!
