A Note From Andrea & Scott

Dear
 Southwoods,

The
 Adirondacks
 had
 a
 truly
 amazing
 fall
 this
 year.
  The
 colors
 at
 Camp
 have
 never
 been
 so
 bright
 and

Paradox
  Lake
 never
 so
  clear.
  At
 Cmes
  it
 was
  almost
 like
 the
 lake
 was
  a
  mirror,
  perfectly
 reflecCng
  the

mountains
 and
 colorful
  trees
  that
 surround
 our
 summer
 home.
  But
 now
 the
 leaves
  and
  colors,
  except

white,
 have
 all
 gone
 and
 the
 snow
 blankets
 Southwoods
 like
 a
 freshly
 made
 bed.

Chris,
  as
  usual,
  has
  done
  an
  amazing
  job
  of
  closing
  camp
  down
  for
  the
 winter
  and
  starCng
  all
  the

improvements
 for
 next
 summer.
  As
  you
 can
  imagine,
  the
  North
 Country
  is
 in
  a
  deep
  freeze
 and
 the

snow
 is
 flying
 all
  the
 while,
  Chris
  “plowing”
 on
  through
 and
 conCnuing
  to
 work
  outside.
  The
 new
 two

story
 fitness
 facility,
 our
 drone
 racing
 area,
 and
 much
 more
 are
 well
 underway,
 and
 don’t
 be
 surprised

to
 find
 yet
 another
 exciCng
 new
 deep-‐end
 inflatable
 floaCng
 in
 the
 lake
 next
 spring.
  We
 are
 so
  very

lucky
 to
 have
 Chris
 Howe…our
 hearty
  Adirondack
  caretaker.
 Let’s
  all
 be
 sure
 we
 all
 go
 out
 of
  our
 way

next
 summer
 to
 say
 thanks
 for
 all
 of
 his
 behind
 the
 scenes
 efforts
 to
 make
 our
 summers
 so
 special.

In
 the
 winter
 office,
 we
 conCnue
 to
 talk
 about
 our
 reunion.
  It
 was
 so
 much
 fun
 to
 see
 everyone,
 plus

the
 awesome
 airbrush
 t-‐shirts
 and
 “Canteen”
 theme!
  As
 Andrea
 and
 I
 shared
 at
 the
 reunion,
 all
 of
 us

here
 at
 the
 office
 are
 crazy
 busy
 working
 the
 preparaCons
 for
 our
 22nd
 Southwoods

  There
 is

no
  doubt
  in
  our
  minds
  that
  this
  is
  going
  to
  be
  the
  most
  amazing

  Stay

  as
  we

What is the value of Camp?

This question drives our mission. It’s a question we ask ourselves here in the Southwoods office daily. Our answer
is simple; to help children learn invaluable life skills.

Campers attend camp for many reasons. Some go to gain experience with different places and activities, while
others attend to be exposed to the wonders of nature (lakes, mountains, stars, animals). Or maybe it’s to revel in the
sheer joy of learning, to forge lifelong friendships or to learn responsibility for daily tasks (how to do laundry, make
good food choices, time management, personal hygiene). The key is to gain these experiences all while outside the
safety of the nest.

A Camp like Southwoods allows for the broadening of the mind through immersion in the natural world around us,
and helps better prepare children to live life to its fullest. The corridors of life demand a greatly expanded skill set
than do the halls of middle school or high school. As parents we must do all we can to allow our children to learn
the skills that will help them find lifelong success.

At Southwoods we focus on Life Skills. The skills our campers are taught are meant to help them succeed in all
aspects of life – personal, academic, and later on professional. By selecting Southwoods, you are not just allowing
them to go to camp; you are giving them a gift that will last a lifetime.

What is the value of Southwoods?

• We facilitate the growth of positive self-esteem. Positive self-esteem can give you the character to face any
obstacle that stands in your way. With high self-esteem, you can meet the most disappointing and
discouraging situations with faith, hope, and courage. It has been proven time and again; the primary
difference between winners and losers is attitude. Winners make their goals; losers make excuses.

• We teach the value of goal-setting. Most of the things that make life worth living require careful
introspection, sufficient time to develop, and plenty of hard work. Setting goals and consistently working
toward them is the only way to control your own destiny. At Southwoods, we incorporate the process of goal
setting into everyday; for example, by setting goals at the start of each and every activity period.

• We teach the fundamentals of leadership. Everyone can certainly benefit from knowing how to persuade,
influence, and negotiate with others. At Southwoods, campers learn the primary principles of leadership
culminating in our LIT program where they explore how to implement these skills to craft a successful life.

• We support the importance of health and wellness that is being taught at home. It may surprise you to see
this topic spoken about as a Life Skill, but think about it: what is more central to quality of life than quality
of health? There’s no point in having all these skills if you don’t feel well enough (or live long enough) to
enjoy life.

• We work to help campers gain more effective communication skills. Through effective communication we
exchange information, ideas, and opinions with other people, and we set into motion the things we want to
make happen. Communicating effectively is the “master key” to success. At Southwoods campers learn how
to listen to the points of others while appropriately getting their point across.

Positive self-esteem, goal setting, fundamentals of leadership, health and wellness and communication are the top 5
Life Skills that drives our mission at Southwoods. The opportunity to hone these life skills is inherent in the value
of Southwoods. We love when parents reach out at the end of each summer and share the personal growth they have
seen in their child. We can’t wait to hear from you and read about all the ways you have seen your child grow from
their summer experience.

 PROBLEM...
Let’s
 have
 an
 indoor
 picnic!

Picnics
 are
 known
 for
 happening
 outside
 and
 it’s
 certainly
 the
 best
 to
 eat
 at
 the

beach,
 in
 the
 forest,
 or
 in
 a
 park,
 but
 it’s
 not
 always
 possible,
 especially
 on
 snow

days!
 Follow
 these
 simple
 steps
 and
 have
 yourself
 a
 winter
 picnic:

1. Find
 a
 comfy
 spot
 in
 your
 house
 -‐
 extra
 points
 if
 you
 pick
 a
 room
 with
 no

electronics
 to
 distract
 you!

2. Get
 out
 the
 blankets
 pillows
 -‐
 you
 could
 even
 build
 a
 picnic
 fort!
3. Choose
 your
 favorite
 foods
 -‐
 you
 may
 need
 parental
 assistance
 here.
 We
 think

finger
 foods
 are
 best!

4. Invite
 your
 friends
 &
 family
 to
 join
 the
 fun!
5. Now
 relax
 and
 enjoy
 unplugging
 while
 having
 a
 delicious
 indoor
 picnic!

Project Morry’s “Kids That Give” program is comprised of youth
who have been inspired to support the organization throughout the

year. By creating fundraising initiatives and in-kind donation
projects, each participant dedicates their time to helping the

organization grow and develop. This is a fantastic opportunity for
youth looking to stay involved with Project Morry.

Line Up! Girls Side

Hey
 Southwoods! Lauren Hohman
Wow!
 I
  can’t
 believe
 it
 is
 already
 December.
 It
 feels
 like
 just
  yesterday
 we
 were
 meeting
  at
  Girls Side
the
 flagpole
 for
 Girl’s
 Side
 Lineup,
 hearing
  your
 cabin
 calls,
 and
 preparing
 for
  the
 fun
 camp

day
  ahead.

  Even
 in
 the
  midst
 of
 a
 hectic
  holiday
 season,
 Southwoods
  is
  always
 in
 the
  back
  Head Counselor
of
 my
 mind.
 Whether
 I’m
  humming
  the
  tune
  of
  “Little
  Cabin
 in
 the
  Woods”
 or
  daydreaming

about
  the
  warm,
 sunny
 days
  at
  the
 lake…
 not
  a
  day
 goes
  by
 without
 a
  thought
  of
  camp.
  If

you’re
 like
  me
  and
 Southwoods
 is
  always
 on
 your
 mind,
 I
 have
  come
  up
 with
 a
 list
  of
  things

you
 can
 do
 to
 keep
 yourself
 occupied
 as
 you
 count
 down
 the
 days
 to
 summer
 2019!

1. Gather
  your
 family
 or
 friends
 and
 start
 the
  day
 with
 your
 own
 version
 of
 “Morning

Lineup”
  -‐
  include
  silly
  announcements,
  box
  scores,
  I
  mustache
  you
  a
  question

Monday,
 closing
 song,
 etc…

2. Write
  a
  letter
  or
  text
  all
  of
  your
  camp
  friends,
  reminding
  them
  of
  your
  favorite

memories
 from
 2018.

3. Change
 the
 words
 of
 the
 songs
 you
  hear
 on
 the
 radio
 to
 be
 about
 Southwoods.
 This

is
 great
 practice
 for
 your
 Chieftain
 summer!

4. Go
  out
  of
  your
  way
  to
  make
  someone
  else’s
  day
  better.
  Pass
  along
  that
  FUZZY

FEELING!

5. And
 finally…
 make
 a
 list
 of
 all
 the
 things
 you’re
 excited
 for
 at
 camp
 in
 2019!
Wishing
 you
 a
 wonderful
 holiday
 season!
See
 you
 in
 2019!

Line Up! Boys Side

Chances are you’ve already worn in your new mittens and you have put your winter
coat to some good use. I don’t know about you but I truly love this time of the year.
Seasons are beginning to transform and as the New Year approaches, it is a great
time for reflection!

It is crazy to think, just 4 1/2 months ago we were surfing Paradox, singing campfire Johnny Reinke
songs, and hanging out with our camp friends. Although a new Southwoods summer Boys Side
countdown has begun, be sure to take a moment this season and remember your
personal growth and progress from this past year. We have all climbed a mountain Head Counselor
and have grown along the way. Some of us have gotten taller and wiser, while others
have gained courage and confidence. Be proud as you reflect on where you were, and
where you are going! Every journey yields an occasion to make a new friend, or have
a new experience, and will always give us opportunity to grow.”

It was amazing to see everyone at this year’s reunion! Southwoods campers, families,
and staff sure know how to make every Southwoods’ event incredibly awesome! Can it
be summer already?

Until next time, Keep Dreaming Big!

Cooking with Andrea!

If
  your
 house
 is
  anything
 like
  ours,
 there
 is
  a
 daily
 weather
  watch
  in
  the
 hopes
  that
  in
  the

morning
 we
 will
 find
 a
 blanket
 of
 snow
  outside.
 In
  addition
 to
  the
 anticipation
  of
 having
 a

day
 off
  from
 school,
 there
 is
 also
 the
 undeniable
 magical
 feeling
 that
 comes
 with
 the
 first

snowflakes.
 From
 snowball
 fights
  to
 building
 snowmen,
 the
 fun
 is
  endless.
 Usually
  after
 a

day
  of
 playing
  outside,
  everyone
 is
  ready
  for
  some
 warmer
  indoor
  activities.
  Luckily

have

 wonderful
