SciTech IDEAS IN ACTION

‘Regenerative medicine is the next frontier of medicine for the
21st century,” Dr. Anthony Atala, a leading doctor in the field,
told the SciTech Ideas In Action audience during his recent
presentation. “And we are seeing the inflexion point right now,
it is really growing, really taking off. The future is bright.”
Making science come alive to wider and wider audiences, the SciTech
Ideas in Action Series brings in-depth looks at scientific and technical
topics from the inside. They range from the Wake Forest Institute for Re-
generative Medicine’s work by Dr. Atala and his team to regenerate tissue
and organ function, to the advanced biotechnology in Jennifer Bryant’s
Russ Read criminal forensics lab. From its earliest days - created and planned at an
informal faculty / staff weekly morning coffee in 2009 - Forsyth Tech’s
NCBW Exec. Director

innovative SciTech Ideas in Action lecture series has had over thirty speakers with over three thousand
attendees.
“Our SciTech team hosts accomplished scientific & technical experts who share their passions and
projects in stimulating presentations, always free and open to the public,” says Russ Read, executive
Fdirector of the sponsoring National Center for the Biotechnology Workforce (NCBW).
orsyth Tech’s SciTech Ideas In Action lecture series are held once a month during fall and
spring terms to maximize attendance by students and include participants from the community
and other colleges. “We want to give each person who attends a new set of facts, an expanded
knowledge of cutting-edge scientific research, and
an experience of the latest discoveries in advanced
technology. It has become a known brand in the com-
munity. Imagine the multiplier effect if every com-
munity college across the country was to hold their
own SciTech series.”

This “flip book” publication presents materials,
information and links about the SciTech Ideas in
Action program across the past nine years. Included
in the pages of this flip book are posters for all the
speakers and topics presented. There are also links to
more in depth PDF reports as well as videos of the talks available on You Tube. Finally, we have includ-
ed a mid - term write up which coincided with the college’s 50th anniversary in 2011.

This year the National Center for the Biotechnology Workforce celebrates its 10th year of operation.
We are hopeful of another great year of lectures that will appeal to our community. We also want to
thank our sponsors who have made the series possible and going forward these include the college,
Math Science and Technology, Economic Workforce and Development, ForsythTech Foundation,
BioNetwork and the North Carolina Biotechnology Center.

I want to thank the staff of the NCBW for their diligent work in making SciTech a great success!

Lastly, we dedicate this isssue to Mona Cofer, our editor on SciTech since its inception, who has elect-
ed to retire after more than twenty years of service to the NCBW and the college. Thank you Mona.

SciTech - Bringing Science & Technology to the Community!

They say that many busi-
ness deals are sealed on
the golf course. Well this
is not the case with the
SciTech Lecture Series at
Forsyth Technical Com-
munity College in Win-
ston-Salem. It was created
and planned at an informal
faculty and staff weekly
morning coffee. Not know-
ing how popular the series
would be, the Forsyth Tech
team began in earnest the task of putting together two trial
SciTech speaker events that would capture the imagination and
bring in the work and passion of others to a college community.

During the initial planning process the thought was to develop
a platform where our instructors could speak to a broad-based
audience, interested in science and technology, about their work
at the college. The lectures would be held once a month during
the fall and spring terms to maximize the attendance of students
and to include other participants from the community and other
colleges.

To gauge the interest levels within the educational institution,
the SciTech steering committee brought into the college two
guest speakers. One was Amy Greeson (pictured), a pharmacist,
educator, lecturer, writer and world traveler and the producer
and host of Healing Seekers. Her topic, “Searching for a Cure,”
gave our audience a look at the crossroads between medicine
and the healing tradition of indigenous cultures. The other was
Dr. Ski Chilton, the founder of Gene Smart, a wellness and pre-
vention company. His topic of discussion was obesity, chronic
inflammatory diseases in America and malnurtition and other
urgen issues affecting children in Africa.

Both events were hugely successful for a number of reasons.
Attendance at both events was between 70-90 people. The
feedback received after each event was extremely positive and it
was during these two presentations that many of our faculty saw
the advantage and opportunity to showcase their talents in their
teaching field. Dr. Dwaine Davis, Department Chair of Physical
Sciences is quoted as saying, “I could not be more pleased with
the results of this year’s SciTech Lecture Series the quality and

content of the presentations were second to none. The support from our school and the community
was outstanding. I hope that we can use this year as a cornerstone for the future of the Series. ”

During the spring term 2010, three more SciTech lecture

series were scheduled. Three of Forsyth Tech’s faculty

volunteered to talk about topics related to subject matter

that was of special interest to them or for which they had a

passion. Dr. Kevin Conley, founder of our Nanotechnology

Associate Degree Program, gave a highly interactive over-

view of the world of nanoscience with a special emphasis

on its application to biotechnology. Forsyth Tech biology

instructor Chris Sowers (pictured) introduced his master’s

to the southeast as he posed questions about our future on

a sustainable Earth. Judith Ginn, Forsyth Tech biology in-

structor, and Dr. Tom Ginn, Judith’s husband, talked about

their health care work in rural Kenya. It is interesting to note that all of these programs were adver-

tised and open to the general public free of charge.

October 2010 will bring a new semester, new students and a new opportunity for the SciTech speak-
er’s series. During the semester, we will have a highly honored guest speaker, Dr. Mark Wainberg,
a Canadian AIDS researcher and activist. He is the Director of the McGill
University AIDS Centre at the Montreal Jewish General Hospital and Pro-
fessor of Medicine and of Microbiology at McGill University. In 2008, Dr.
Wainberg was named a Chevalier de Légion d’honneur, the highest honor
given by the country of France. In 2001, he was made an Officer of the
Order of Canada, which is Canada’s highest civilian honor, for his “ma-
jor contributions to the study and treatment of HIV/AIDS.” In 2005, he
was made an Officer of the National Order of Quebec, an order of merit
bestowed by the government of the Province of Quebec. In 2000, he was
made a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada.

Russ H. Read explains, “Having a SciTech speaker like Dr. Mark Wainberg

gives us the opportunity to hear about the technology associated with the

race to treat HIV. The space race gave us LEDs and light weight comput- Dr. Mark Wainberg

ers. The technology of the war against HIV has given us rapid PCR, drugs

that effect DNA polymerase and protease inhibitors, viral cultures and

clinical trials and a whole new set of guidelines on drug development. All of this science and tech-

nology contributed to a bench and clinical science revolution in biotechnology.” Read added, “Dr.

Wainberg is one of the best in the world to describe this phenomenon.”

Imagine the multiplier effect if every community college across the country was to hold their own
SciTech series. To date we have reached over 350 people in only five lectures. If all the colleges
across the country embraced a SciTech program we could reach thousands. What is really great
about the program is that it is carried out with internal resources, so the costs of running it are mini-
mal. SciTech gets people excited about science and technology and demonstrates what a great talent
resource we have within our faculty and our community of contacts.

The SciTech Science Lecture Series

Echoing the sounds of Washington, DC across the

campus twice within the past decade with visits by

two sitting Presidents is no small feat for a

community college. However, that is the history

revolving around Forsyth Technical Community

College who hosted President George W. Bush in

2003 and President Barack Obama in December

2010. As the national spotlight beamed on the

college, the reputation and notoriety of its students

and faculty were exposed to the whole country and US President Barack Obama during his visit to
beyond, creating a “Sputnik Moment.” This “Sputnik the Biotech Labs at Forsyth Tech

Moment” was just one of the showcases celebrating the college’s 50th Anniversary and the

beginning of several events throughout the year.

With the tagline of “The First Fifty Years: A Legacy of Learning,” the challenge was ever present

to produce a showcase of events of common interest for the student body, faculty and

community. Needless to say, the Presidential visit would always loom as the event that brought

national attention to the college and particularly with the

President inviting one of our graduating Biotechnology students to

Washington for the State of the Union Address. However, the

showcasing of the college had begun much earlier in the year with

a faculty brainstorming session searching for innovative ideas to
celebrate the college’s 50th Anniversary. From this discussion, the

SciTech Science Lecture Series was born with a goal of featuring a

series of high-profile speakers

who would visit the college and

Dr. Frank Torti explaining the advances of present on their area of
cancer treatment during September’s lecture knowledge and expertise.

As the search for speakers began, the question arose as to Forsyth Tech’s President, Dr. Gary Green, with
which area of science to spotlight. Having the good fortune October’s guest speaker, Dr. Mark Wainberg
of living in the Piedmont Triad area with its many medical,
research and technology facilities, the pool of candidates
was nearly endless. The SciTech Team was able to tap into a
resource of very prominent, high profile people from the
community, as well as local colleges and abroad.

To begin the new academic year, the first lecture was scheduled in September 2010 with Dr.
Frank Torti, Director of Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center’s Comprehensive Cancer
Center, who began the series with the topic of better approaches in treating cancer and
