Potash Deposit Development in Thailand
Piya Kingkaew, Professional Mining Engineer
Department of Primary Industries and Mines,

Ministry of Industry, Thailand

1. Introduction

Potash is a general term used for compounds of

potassium. Rock salt is a common term of halite mineral.

On the earth, both potash and rock salt have close

genetically relation as

an evaporated mineral which deposit together in the

restricted basin of sea water.

Potash is one of the three significant elements for

synthetic fertilizer which is used in the modern

agricultural plantation. These elements needed by every

kind of tree and plant to build their development are

nitrate, phosphate and potash.

There are only two major potash minerals in Thailand,

sylvite and carnallite. Carnallite (KCl.MgCl2.6H2O) has a

theoretical K2O content of 16.95% and a specific gravity

of 1.7. It is colourless to orange, red or pale rose. Most of

carnallite is pure and generally shows little evidence of

bedding. Sylvite (KCl) is candle white and bricky red,

which has a theoretical K2O content of 63.17%. It has a
specific gravity of 2.0.
2. History of Potash Exploration in Thailand

Thailand by the Department of Mineral Resources
(DMR) initially explored for potash in the north-east of
Thailand since 1973. During 1973-1982, DMR drilled of 194
boreholes covering approximately 50,000 square
kilometers on Khorat Plateau. The exploration was
divided into 2 basins by Phu Phan mountain range , called
Korat basin, covered 33,000 square kilometers of
Khonkaen, Chaiyaphum ,
Nakhonratchasima, Kalasin,
Mahasarakham, Roiet, Yasothon,
Sisaket, Surin, Ubonratchathani
and Amnatcharoen provinces.
The latter, called Sakonnakorn
basin, covered 17,000 square
kilometers of Sakonnakorn, Nakonpanom, Udonthani and
Nongkhai provinces, which extends northward into Lao
PDR.
