An important question faced by Muslims today is whether the concept of Islamic Civilisation refers
to the Islamic golden age of the past or does it refer also to the present day Islamic world? Some
may define it by the piety of Muslims in the performance of rituals, rather than their pursuit of worldly
achievements, while others may regard it in terms of the latter per se. Thus, if the term 'Islamic
Civilisation' is not clearly defined, Muslims may end up at crossed purposes and fail to achieve the
necessary consensus on the objectives and direction of their efforts. There should be a common
understanding and work towards common goals. Only then can we be confident that all efforts will
contribute to Islam and the well-being of Muslims as a whole and the world at large.

Paracosm by 17-year old Puteri Fateh Arina Merican is a non-fiction collection of prose, poetry
and illustrations inviting readers to step into her world, her “paracosm” (a term used to describe a
highly detailed imaginary world). Former Unversiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) Communications
Professor Sharifah Mariam Al-Idrus, says that Arina’s collection which she had meticulously penned
over her years at Tunku Kurshiah College, begs to be read with love and understanding. Sometimes
one detects a note of anger, frustration even bitterness at the uncompromising values she has had to
embrace throughout her teen years. And even as she cries out against the forces that seek to mould
her in their images, and even as she struggles between the sin of disobedience to parents and the
need to be herself, she still longs to be understood and accepted for herself. Parents, teachers and
students of education and psychology will find Paracosm intriguing.

Kirana: Dreams After the Rose is the story of Kirana, a teenage artist who finds fame after she
loses her father in a plane crash. Soon after, her mother succumbs to cancer and Kirana’s life is in
limbo. She stops painting and soon loses interest in life.
One night, Kirana wakes up and notices beautiful roses by her bedside. She then sees a painting
in her room. A painting of a door. Upon touching it, Kirana is transported to Melaka 500 years ago.
There, she meets Tun Fatimah and Sultan Mahmud Shah during the last days of Melaka, before the
Portuguese attack. She develops feelings for the hero, Hang Nadim, feelings that she denies.
But was it all really a dream? She is convinced it is so.
Upon awakening, she meets a boy, Naim, who relates incidents from the past that had happened to
her. Mysteriously, her paintings after her experience bear an uncanny resemblance to the illustrations
in a manuscript stored at the British Library. Paintings from 500 years ago.

Kronika Nashan is an epic fantasy series beautifully written in Malay, with a style of narration not
unlike the Lord of the Rings series. Books in this series portrayed strong science fiction concepts
quite similar to the Empire of the East Trilogy by Fred Saberhagen, and fast-moving action storyline
similar to the Warlord trilogy by Bernard Cornwell.

Kronika Nashan is the tale of a princess who ruled a small country called Nashan, in a period of
brutality and conspiracy. At the same time, two superpowers are in conflict since time immemorial,
with wars erupting from time to time.

Ahmad Patria is a pioneer of fantasy genres in Malaysia. His first book, written at the age of 17, has
been awarded the Malaysian Book of the Year award in 1987. His style of writing has earned him the
nickname “Tolkien of Malaysia”.
