Report from our President

April 2022

SCM Members and friends,

Oh happy days! Spring is here so that should put
a smile on all our faces. We don’t have to shovel
snow so that makes us happy. We can go outside
without a heavy coat and smell the fresh spring air. That makes us happy.
We are finally able to unwrap our cars from storage and get them out.
That makes us very happy.

In exploring what makes us happy, tops on the list are relationships. SCM is all
about relationships. We strive to be together by scheduling events we can all
participate in. But, as a new member, I think back on how difficult it seemed to
establish new relationships in our club. Then I realized this was a 50/50 deal.
I had to step up. Club members were all very friendly but in order to establish
a true relationship with our club and its members I had to participate, not just
show up. The more I volunteered, the more events I attended, the more people
I met, the more relationships were established as a result. This process is
ongoing today whether you are a new member or have been in the club since
its existence. So, older members and new, reach out, expand your circle of
friends, participate, and above all remember we strive to be a club of inclusion.

General Motors Racing Division had some very happy days recently as Corvette
won GTD Pro at IMSA’s 12 hours at Sebring, and Corvette posted a second
place the day before at Sebring in the WEC. Still dialing in the corvette C8R to
GT3 spec but this was obviously a better showing than Daytona a month earlier.
Also, in the Dpi class at Sebring, GMs Cadillac swept the podium with JDC
Motor Sports a local builder/race team out of Savage Mn (some of you may
remember touring their facility a few years ago with our club) rising to the
podium in second place. Congratulations JDC. And not to be out done,
Chevrolet posted first, second, fourth, fifth and sixth at Atlanta NASCAR.
And finally, on the same weekend in the Indy Car series at Texas Motor
Speedway the winner was powered by a Chevrolet Race Engine
culminating a phenomenal weekend for General Motors Racing.

A noted psychologist once stated, “We are happiest when we engage in
activities that make us forget ourselves and lose track of time.” That is
the embodiment of driving a corvette, sitting behind the wheel gliding
effortlessly down the road. Oh Happy Days!

This photo is from March 4, 2022 at a Suburban burger fries catch-up
that was held at the bar Fishlips in Cocoa Beach FL.
We had a nice dinner there and the restaurant located on the water at
Port Canaveral where the cruise ships sail from.
The club members that are in the photo, left to right around the table are:
Russ M, Sue and Steve R, Mike and Evon Miller
at the end is Don D then Susan D, Pat M., Lisa G and Esther G.
Some of our members spend the winter down there others just visiting.
Susan and Don were visiting and Esther and Lisa were sailing on

SCM Hospitality Guidelines

Current Member Hospitality Guidelines

● Send a get well/thinking of you card to members whenever it is learned that
they are dealing with an illness, surgery, etc. If the recovery time is
lengthy this may include requesting other members of the club also
send get well cards so that we are providing additional support to the
ill member.

● The Hospitality Committee needs to be sensitive to member privacy. It is not
the role of this position to make known the specific details of member
illnesses. Permission should be sought from the ailing club member
prior to communicating to the entire club membership.

● Send a sympathy card to members whenever a family member passes.
Family members can be non-member spouses, siblings, parents,
children, grandparents, aunts, uncles, etc.

● Whenever we lose a member the following guidelines will apply:

1. The cost of a memorial or flowers will be $100. If flowers are sent

in lieu of a memorial donation then the $100 will be spent

on the flowers plus the cost of tax and delivery fees.

2. Memorials when requested in the obituary will be the first choice.

Flowers will be sent when there is no mention of a

preferred memorial.

● The Hospitality Committee shall annually attend a Board meeting to request
a budget of $249 to be spent on cards, postage, and memorials or
flowers on an as needed basis. If the committee runs out of money
before the end of the year they will need to request from the Board
an additional $249 budget.

Members should notify the Hospitality Committee of any circumstance that
would require a card or memorial to be sent. Hospitality can be notified by
e-mail to [email protected].

Former Member Hospitality Guideline

● The Hospitality Coordinator, if asked by a current SCM member, will publish
information in Bucket Sheets and send out information via the SCM
email communication program.

Respectfully submitted by Revised 03/1/2022
Sue Griffin, Hospitality Committee

event. Sandy and Brent Reibel offered their garage as the venue, and
they have a caterer. Shawn and the Reibels will find a date after
mid-July. We may also do a cruise prior to the party. Sandy said
Jim Bodin may be able to plan the cruise.
● SCM Charitable Donations Designation(s). Although Spina Bifida is our
primary charity, some members would like the club to donate to
additional charities. There is a long history with Corvettes and
Spina Bifida. It was suggested this discussion be tabled until spring,
when the snowbirds will be back. Steve Mael made a motion to defer
a decision until May; John Ritter seconded; and the motion passed,

Board Meeting Minutes continued on Page 21
Page 20

Board Meeting Minutes; Membership Report continued from Page 20

● Mike said there are some members who missed the deadline for submitting
dues to renew their membership. He asked about the late fee, and how
long members have to renew without being considered new members
(requiring the same process as new members to join/rejoin). Mike
volunteered to write some language to clarify the By-Laws and our
practices regarding late renewals. Mike’s suggestions will be
reviewed by the Board in June, and the resulting language will
be presented at the June Membership Meeting for approval.

Public Relations: John Ritter reported that he has received the semi-annual
sponsor payment from Matt Saxe. He will pursue receipt of the annual
contract and the remaining payment. He has been in contact with
several advertisers, to clarify their ads and payments for the newsletter.

Editor’s Report: Steven Mael reported.
● Deadline for the next newsletter articles/pictures is prior to May 3rd, 2022.

IT Report: Steve Heasley reported that the website is up to date, and he will
be helping Sandy Reibel program her new computer for the office
of Treasury. He is also willing to help Mike Cannon with his new
computer, if needed. Steve said our bill for Member Planet is due for
payment in May. It will be $300, so the members need to approve this
expense, as it is more than the limit permitted for Board approval. Ron
Kabat will bring this up during the next Membership Meeting. Steve
also has a Blue Host invoice that needs to be approved during the
April Membership meeting.

Governor’s Report: Jim Bodin reminded us that the 2022 NCCC
Convention will be in Atlantic City. During a recent NCCC
Governor’s meeting, the location of Convention was proposed
for Bowling Green in 2023 (assuming the NCM racetrack is fully
functional by then), and possibly Near Branson in the Ozarks in 2024
(assuming the new race track being built there is completed in time).
Jim also mentioned that Hagerty Insurance offers discounts through the
NCCC website. Jim submitted the Certificate of Insurance for the
Spring Cruise May 1st. He will submit for the BIR Drivers School in
June and the Fall Color Run in October. NCCC has a calendar of
events on its website, and member clubs can submit flyers for open
events (such as the Fall Color Run) for inclusion. Steve Heasley said
he would work on a flyer to be submitted to NCCC.

Board Meeting Minutes continued on Page 22

events and other local auto events for April, May, and June. The
calendar of events will be published in the next newsletter.

Old Business: Plans for a second 50th Anniversary party are underway.
Shawn Hanna will work with Sandy and Brent Reibel to set a date
for the celebration to be held at their garage. Jim Bodin agreed to
create and lead a cruise for that event. Jim also mentioned that
several members had requested entertainment for the event (such as
the Elvis Impersonator we had at a past event). He said that cost us
about $1000. The Board agreed that we should look at including
entertainment in our budget. Shawn will work up a budget after
he and the Reibels decide on a caterer, entertainment, etc.We are
looking for a date in late August (not confirmed yet).
Shawn presented the budget for the BIR Drivers School to the Board.
Lynn Steenblock made a motion to accept that budget and present it
to the members for approval. John Ritter seconded that motion,
which carried. The budget will be presented during the April
Membership Meeting.

so Ron Kabat can report the results to the members.
