Report from our President

March 2020

Well I’m starting this month’s page with another
news item of interest (I hope). This time accord-
ing to Motor1.com, some individual took a 2020
Hellcat Wide Body Daytona and wrecked it, with
a total of 296 miles on the odometer. With reported dealers selling them at over
$25000 premium, someone forgot that the foot has to be in control of the accel-
erator, not the other way around. Now it’s just another junk car sitting at Copart
looking for someone to buy and do something with it.
Seems Dodges aren’t the only casualty of an overzealous accelerator. Accord-
ing to The Drive, a Colorado dealership mechanic installed a supercharger on a
customer’s 2020 Mustang with 266 miles on it and while checking out his work,
wrecked the car.

You may have seen where one of the Mustangs used in the Steve McQueen
movie Bullitt was found in a Mexican salvage yard and is being rebuilt. Now it
turns out Jerry Seinfeld found the Porsche 917 driven by Steve McQueen in the
movie LeMans in the early 2000’s and has sat on it since then, only bringing it to
light recently. This one wasn’t in a junkyard, rather was sitting on a dealer used
car lot per the podcast Spikes Car Radio.

I recently had a discussion with someone at a store I spend a lot of money at and
the source of some of the things they sell. So much is overseas in origin. I got
to thinking about all the parts I’ve stockpiled for the Corvette (a 1986) and how
much originates overseas and how much doesn’t. I honestly doubt that the car
would be on the road without the overseas parts network. I wonder how much
of the new model Corvettes originates in the US and how much originates over-
seas?

Here’s a reminder, scammers are at work again. It had been a while since
anything was attempted on us but recently the wife had one of the ‘Your Social
Security Number has been compromised” calls. The SSA does not make calls
like this, so beware if you get one. Be aware and know when they’re trying to
scam you.

Interesting article in Motor1.com. A couple wanted a C8 vin to match their 53
and GM accommodated them. Of course, it only cost them $5K addiitional

Well I’m planning on getting the Vette out and at least go around the block
while the weather is nice and the streets aren’t too crappy. I was going to
get the car out last month and it snowed before I could get it out. Don’t tell
Mother Nature but I’m wanting to get it out and at least go around the block
with it. Cross your fingers the weather holds and Hope to see you at the
meeting.

Walz Proposes Minnesota Adopt CA Clean Car Standard

SEPTEMBER 26, 2019

On September 25, Governor Tim Walz announced that he plans for
Minnesota to adopt California Clean Car Standards, which include low
emission (LEV) and zero emission (ZEV) vehicle mandates.  The admin-
istration did not seek input from MADA or other impacted stakeholders
(manufacturers, biofuels groups) before this announcement was made.
The implications of adopting of such a rule are unclear and hinge on
whether California is allowed to continue to set its own standards, since
the Trump Administration recently revoked California’s authority to do so.
The matter is now being litigated in federal court.
MADA responded with a statement condemning Walz’s proposal, as the
air quality, demographics, and consumer preferences are vastly different
in California than Minnesota.
Walz is pursuing this initiative via rulemaking instead of legislatively.  The
process will last 15-18 months and allow mutliple opportunities for MADA
and our dealers to weigh in.  Stay tuned for updates.

MADA Supports Decarbonization – Not “Californiazation” – of Our Transportation

The Minnesota Auto Dealers Association (MADA) is concerned about the Walz Administration’s recent
announcement that it plans to adopt California Clean Car Standards via rulemaking.

“Minnesota is not California,” stated MADA President Scott Lambert. “We have 4 million passenger
vehicles on the road; they have 24 million. They have 148 areas of the state that don’t meet federal air
quality standards; we have none. The average temperature in California is 59.5 degrees; Minnesota’s is
41.2. Their top-selling vehicle is a Honda Civic; ours is a Chevy Silverado. Fifty-five percent of their
annual vehicle sales are trucks; over 80% of Minnesota’s are.

Our dealers support efforts to promote cleaner vehicles. Following the lead of the state with the worst
air quality in the country is not the way to go.”

Minnesota currently sells more trucks than cars. Adopting California Clean Car Standards will likely limit
consumer choice by removing trucks, minivans, and SUVs off showroom floors, depressing vehicle sales
and threatening jobs. It could also be impossible for dealers who take trade-ins from other states or
consumers who purchase across the border to register their vehicles in Minnesota.

MADA would instead prefer the administration take a collaborative approach that brings Minnesota
stakeholders together to promote cleaner vehicles. For the past five years, MADA has participated in
Drive Electric Minnesota, a partnership between environmental NGOs, electric utilities, and the
automotive industry, to educate the public about the benefits of electric vehicles and promote policies
that encourage their adoption. During that time, sales of electric vehicles have more than quadrupled in
Minnesota.

“Instead of abdicating our authority over air quality to California, let’s lead and innovate by example,”
added Lambert.

About MADA: The Minnesota Automobile Dealers Association is the state’s only trade association
exclusively representing franchised new car and truck dealers. MADA’s 371 dealer members employ
over 20,000 Minnesotans with a payroll of $1.1 billion.
