Report from our President

March 2022

Whoa be it, The Ides of March upon us yet we
languish here in snow, but gaze upon the calendar
our optimism shows, that Mother Nature’s grip on
us about to let go, and blessed spring blooming
with winding open road.

Spring Greetings SCM Members and Friends,

I realize I am five days early but just can’t hold back my enthusiasm for spring.
I also can’t hold back my enthusiasm in announcing our two latest Board
appointees, Shawn Hanna as Vice President, and John Ritter as Public Relations.
I thank both Shawn and John for volunteering their time and talent in support of
our club. As I stated during our February Meeting, just as our cars operate better
on all cylinders, so too our club operates better with all Board positions filled.

While I am on the subject, I think we all owe a debt of gratitude to members
who have served our club in many capacities from board members to event
Volunteers over the past 51 and a half years. We “Jonnies Come Lately”, I
included, are reaping the benefits of the foundation they built. Thank you to
all who have volunteered. And to all our present club members, participate in
your club by sharing your time and talent. Each of us carry the responsibility
of adding to the foundation for the success of the next 50 years.

In looking to the months ahead, I expect a continued decrease in Covid
cases which brings the promise of a Corvette driving season with all the club
activities we enjoy. I am hoping by mid to late April we resume our Hamburger,
Fries, and Catch-up. If you are interested in hosting that event or one later in
the year, contact Shawn and we will get it on our calendar. I believe our spring
cruise has been scheduled for 1 May. More to come on that. We have all been
to many interesting places in Minnesota, but have we all been to all the
interesting places? I don’t think so. If you know of someplace in Minnesota
that you found interesting and would like to share, let’s go! Plan a day trip
or even an overnighter. If you need help, reach out. We are here. We need
fresh ideas to make this the best corvette driving season ever for our club.
Thank you, and blessed spring be upon us all, soon.

Ron Kabat

Anyone who may be
interested in keeping track
of their vehicle mileage,

Corvette or otherwise,
may request from me, by

email, this free
"MPG Calculator".

If your vehicle is brand
new or several years old,
this calculator will help

you easily maintain a
working record of your

mileage history.

Yes, I know, your
vehicle keeps track of your
mileage. However, it does
not give you a running log
of your mileage, giving you
your best and worst mileage

details. Know when you
are getting better mileage
than other driving times,

which this Excel
Spreadsheet will do.

You may have a
spreadsheet that you
currently use, or a notepad,
but this worksheet, after
filling in the initial four or
five entries, just takes three
field entries to process the
data automatically that you
most want to keep track of
and understand at a glance.

You will need Microsoft
Excel, but Open Office or
another may also work.

If you are interested,
just email me at:

SCM Hospitality Guidelines

Current Member Hospitality Guidelines

● Send a get well/thinking of you card to members whenever it is learned that
they are dealing with an illness, surgery, etc. If the recovery time is
lengthy this may include requesting other members of the club also
send get well cards so that we are providing additional support to the
ill member.

● The Hospitality Committee needs to be sensitive to member privacy. It is not
the role of this position to make known the specific details of member
illnesses. Permission should be sought from the ailing club member
prior to communicating to the entire club membership.

● Send a sympathy card to members whenever a family member passes.
Family members can be non-member spouses, siblings, parents,
children, grandparents, aunts, uncles, etc.

● Whenever we lose a member the following guidelines will apply:

1. The cost of a memorial or flowers will be $100. If flowers are sent

in lieu of a memorial donation then the $100 will be spent

on the flowers plus the cost of tax and delivery fees.

2. Memorials when requested in the obituary will be the first choice.

Flowers will be sent when there is no mention of a

preferred memorial.

● The Hospitality Committee shall annually attend a Board meeting to request
a budget of $249 to be spent on cards, postage, and memorials or
flowers on an as needed basis. If the committee runs out of money
before the end of the year they will need to request from the Board
an additional $249 budget.

Members should notify the Hospitality Committee of any circumstance that
would require a card or memorial to be sent. Hospitality can be notified by
e-mail to [email protected].

Former Member Hospitality Guideline

● The Hospitality Coordinator, if asked by a current SCM member, will publish
information in Bucket Sheets and send out information via the SCM
email communication program.

Respectfully submitted by Revised 03/1/2022
Sue Griffin, Hospitality Committee

have a special guest, Sue Griffn, joining us later. Ron began the Board reports.

Board Members Present: Ron Kabat, Sandy Reibel, Mike Cannon,
Steve Heasley, Roger Dahlquist, Marie George, Steve Mael, Barb Stattman,
Butch George, Ryan Clayson, Paul Hauschildt, Kristi Clayson, Jan Hanna,
Lynn Steenblock, Ron Weeks, Shawn Hanna, John Ritter.

Board Members Absent: Jim Bodin

Guests Present: Sue Griffin

Secretary’s Report: Jan Hanna asked for any corrections/additions to the
published Board meeting minutes of February 1st. With none voiced,
a motion was made by Sandy Reibel and seconded by Lynn Steenblock
to approve the minutes. The motion carried.

Treasurer’s Report: Sandy Reibel reported.
• Expenses were attributed to: BIR Divers School Track Rental, Drop Box fees,
and reimbursement checks to members whose dues were covered by
Matt Saxe (our sponsor) because they purchased a corvette through
his dealership.
• Deposits were attributed to: a check from Matt Saxe to cover certain
member dues, as explained above. This is one of the benefits we
receive from our sponsor.

Detailed Treasurer’s reports are available for members to review upon request
and at the Membership meetings.

Membership Report: Mike Cannon reported.

• SCM members: 185

• Lifetime members: 86

• NCCC members: 161

Page 20

Public Relations: John Ritter reported
• A board committee met with representatives of Matt Saxe Chevrolet on
February 8th to renew the sponsorship agreement for the current year.
John Ritter provided highlights from the meeting. Ron Weeks made a
motion to accept the proposal; Mike Cannon seconded the motion,
and it passed with one opposing vote. A current contract will be sent
to the dealership for signature and payment.
• Ron Weeks asked John Ritter if he had heard from a certain advertiser,
whether they would renew/pay for their ad in the Bucket Sheets.
John said he had no response to date, and would have to contact
them in person. Steven Mael asked to be kept informed, so he
would know if/when to remove the ad.

Editor’s Report: Steven Mael reported.
• Deadline for the next newsletter articles/pictures is prior to April 5, 2022.

IT Report: Steve Heasley reported. The Club website is up to date, and the
registration section for the BIR Drivers School is ready, with online
payment available through PayPal. Shawn Hanna thanked Steve for
his efforts in that regard.

Governor’s Report: Jim Bodin was unable to attend the meeting,
but sent a message saying there was nothing new to report.

Vice President’s Report: Shawn Hanna reported.
• He listed upcoming events for March, April, and May, and asked if anyone
had additional events/dates to be added to the Club calendar. It
appeared there was nothing notable happening until May, and no
one on the Board had any information to add. The events Shawn
intends to include as of now are: the SCM Spring Cruise May 1st ,
the Twin Cities Auto Show at the Fairgrounds May 14-22, the
MN Renegades Cruise and Rally May 14, and the Corvettes
of MN Autocross May 22.
• Shawn also mentioned that there is a block of rooms reserved at the
Arrowwood Lodge in Brainerd Lakes/Baxter for the June 5th
Drivers School. He suggested booking a room early to get
the block discount.

Old Business: There was no old business to discuss.

Page 21

New Business:
• Sue Griffin joined the meeting to assist with discussion regarding updating
the Hospitality Policy/Guidelines to allow for the increased cost of
sending flowers, and to allow publication of member and past member
death notices, if the grieving family wishes to do so. It was suggested
that we increase the budget for flowers up to $100. Ron Weeks made
a motion to update the Guidelines with the budget increase and to
amend the wording to allow publication of death notices.
Shawn Hanna seconded the motion, and it passed.
• Ron Kabat opened discussion regarding holding another Club Anniversary
celebration, since many members were not able/willing to attend the
previous 50th Anniversary cruise and luncheon due to pandemic
concerns. Board members had many suggestions for holding such
an event safely, including meeting in a park for a picnic, having a
meal catered, hiring a food truck. And Sandy Reibel offered the use
of their “garage-mahal” for a party. It was also suggested we have a
cruise first, as was done previously. This discussion will be brought
up during a membership meeting, for input and suggestions.
• Steve Heasley said he would like to be able to donate the proceeds from
the sales of FCR shirts to a charity. He was favoring St. Jude’s, but
Ron Weeks and Shawn Hanna said, since our designated Club charity
is Spina Bifida, we should stick with that. Steve said the website
currently says our Club supports several charities. Ron Weeks
suggested the website be updated to mention only Spina Bifida.
Ron Kabat suggested we wait to discuss this with the full
membership, when we have a quorum to help us decide.
• Sandy Reibel reported that the Treasurer’s computer “died”, and she gave
it to Steve Heasley to diagnose. Steve said that computer and the
Membership computer were both old and out of date, and should
be replaced. He will shop for new computers, and will ask for
reimbursement from the Club. The cost will be brought to the
members for approval because it will exceed the $249 limit
allowed without a vote.
• Jan Hanna mentioned that a former member wanted to give away a
few Suburban license plate frames, and asked how best to inform
members of the offer. Steve Mael said he could put it in the Bucket
Sheets, since it was a free offer and not an advertisement.

A motion to adjourn was made by Paul Hauschildt and seconded by
Shawn Hanna. The meeting was adjourned at 9:25 pm

Respectfully submitted by Jan Hanna, Secretary.
