Report from our President

February 2022

Hello Fellow Corvetters

Dreaming time here. As a Minnesota Corvette club many of our members,
myself included, can do nothing but dream during this time of the year, of open
winding roads, warm sticky tires, and a full tank of gas with no particular place
to go. We are locked in by sub-freezing temperatures and snow, and snow! The
most prominent color car seen on a Minnesota road is brine white. Doesn’t fit
my fancy. Doesn’t look good on yellow, or red, or any other corvette color. It
won’t be long though and our dreams will be turning to reality, and we will be
back on the roads because as my dad always said, “Once you get past the 15th
of February it’s downhill sledding till spring.” And we are there!

If you have been tracking the news lately you may have seen the Department of
Public Safety statistics on traffic related deaths for 2021. 497 people lost their
lives on Minnesota roads last year. That is the highest number since 2007 and
a significant increase over recent years. Number one cause, speed, followed
by alcohol, inattentive driving and not wearing a seat belt. As we dream about
reintroducing our cars to the road let’s dream about being safe, attentive and law
abiding.

Spina Bifida. There I said it again. I know this is my third report and I mentioned
Spina Bifida in my two previous reports, but I need to answer the question I
never asked as a new member of SCM. How did SCM choose Spina Bifida as
our club charity? I went to some of our long-time members for the answer which
turned out to be quite simple. Back when our club originated and affiliated with
the National Council of Corvette Clubs, NCCC’s charity was Spina Bifida. At
that time, we assumed Spina Bifida as our charity also. Through the years NCCC
moved on from Spina Bifida to the Kidney Foundation and others but SCM
stayed with Spina Bifida. So new members, now you know.

Ending with some good news, we have candidates for both of our open officer
positions, vice-president and public relations, and hope to announce those soon.
Sweet Dreams. And remember, spring is just a downhill sled ride away.

CORVETTE PURCHASE
DUES REIMBURSEMENT

As part of our sponsorship agreement with Matt
Saxe Chevrolet any member that purchases a new
or pre-owned Corvette from the dealership would

be eligible for reimbursement of their dues. To
insure that we include everyone that made a

purchase during 2021 a list needs to be compiled
with the name, date purchased, mailing address,
and Corvette model. The club will send a recap of

those purchases to Matt Saxe Chevrolet with
the amount of dues paid. The dealership will send
checks to the individuals that qualify. Members
that have purchased a new or pre-owned Corvette
from Matt Saxe Chevrolet this year should send

the information to:

[email protected]

CDC recommendations

According to current CDC recommendations “Everyone 2 years or older who is
not fully vaccinated should wear a mask in indoor public places”. Our Board has
discussed and recommends the wearing of masks by all members at our monthly
meetings until the current upswing of Covid subsides. This is a Board recom-
mendation only. The wearing or not wearing a mask remains a personal choice.

Scheduling conflict

Please note due to a scheduling conflict we were not able to secure Tuesday,
June 21, 2022 for our club meeting at Jimmy's. As of now we have secured
Wednesday, June 22, 2022 for our June meeting. This will be discussed during
our January Board Meeting with a decision to stick with Wednesday, June 22,
2022 or look for a different date being decided at that time.

Thank you
Ron Kabat

The police haven’t released the details, but you can pretty much guess what happened.
The Corvette C8 was designed to drive to the extreme, in the right conditions and with the right
driver. When the wrong driver on the wrong road tries to flex with one, it will always end the same,
on a long enough timeline. Such was the case for this rare Slime Green C8 Corvette, which was only
very recently purchased.
Buying a new car right now is not for the faint of heart, and the C8 Corvettes tend to carry the
highest mark up prices, both brand new and gently used. So you’d think those who are buying
right now would be really grateful to have them, but you can almost always count on that not
being the case with some drivers who underestimate the power of their car, and also
underestimate the value of the car itself.
The Mantua Township Fire Department in New Jersey posted about such a driver recently, posting
about the crash “During the overnight hours, Rescue 2218 responded to Route 55 in the area of mike
marker 57 for a reported motor vehicle crash with entrapment and fire.” They also offered that “Crews
arrived and were able to remove the patients inside the vehicle as well as extinguish the engine that
was on fire. All patients were transported to local hospitals with non life threatening injuries.”
It’s insane that the only casualty is the car itself, and to say that its totaled is a severe understatement.
No reports of drugs or alcohol use are suspected, but running around in the middle of the night and
totaling a car in a one car wreck is suspicious, even for a bad driver. We look forward to learning
more about the cause of this crash, here’s hoping the driver has a deer to blame for this one.

● The NCCC Convention will be June 12-17 in Atlantic City. Visit the NCCC
website for details. As an aside, Jim mentioned that Rick Hendrick
paid 3.6 million dollars for the 2023 Z-06 VIN #1 car. He heard
that the money will be donated to charity.

Vice President’s Report: Shawn Hanna (newly appointed) thanked
Roger Dahlquist for his help to understand the position and
responsibilities of VP. Roger said Shawn will need Member
Planet access to send out mass e-mail messages, etc. Steve Heasley
will help with that. Shawn asked about any upcoming events, and
The Stattman's and Dotys would like to host a Spring Cruise on
May 1st. Shawn announced the BIR Drivers School dates of

staging the Saturday FCR cruise on Oct 8th. Steve made a motion
to pay the invoice; Shawn Hanna seconded, and the motion passed.

● Shawn Hanna asked for approval of $75 for MET Council annual dues,
to publish our events and club contact information locally. Shawn
made the motion to pay that invoice; John Ritter seconded, and the
motion passed. Shawn will send a check request to Sandy Reibel.

● Ron Kabat said a Club member had approached him with a question
regarding our Reimbursement Policy. There was some concern
about how Chairs/Members were reimbursed for mileage incurred
during preparation for cruises (trial runs). Jim Bodin said he never
asks for mileage reimbursement when he prepares his cruises, but
others do. It was brought up that there are other reimbursement
requests by Chair People for things like printing and mailing costs
for advertising of events, door prizes, etc. Such expenses are usually
included in the event budgets, and the reimbursements are tracked
through check requests. Any such valid request that does not exceed
$249 can be approved by the Board. Regarding mileage reimbursement,
we will follow the current government guidelines for rate per mile to be
reported and reimbursed, which is easily found on the internet. In 2021,
it was 56 cents/mile.

● Ron Kabat asked for approval to pay an annual fee of $20 to
the MN Car Club Association (MCCA), to have our events
listed in their brochure and on their website. Ron and Jan Hanna
will be the MCCA representatives for our Club. Jan will attend the
MCCA meeting in February, to provide them with flyers and dates we
have set for the BIR Drivers Schools and the Fall Color Run. We can
provide them with additional events dates and flyers for the MCCA
website as we confirm them. Jim Bodin made a motion to approve the
payment of MCCA dues and to approve our MCCA representatives.
Barb Stattman seconded, and the motion carried.

A motion to adjourn was made by Mike Cannon and
seconded by Kristi Clayson. The meeting was adjourned at 8:08 pm.

Respectfully submitted by Jan Hanna, Secretary.
