Report from our President
Hi Folks,
I am writing this report on Independence Day and reflecting on how lucky we are
to live in such a great country. Despite some minor opposing opinions, we have the
freedom to disagree. No where else in the world do we have the opportunities that
exist. On past work trips, I visited many countries and had the opportunity to stay
in China, Pakistan and India. These trips always remind me that we live in the best
country in the world. Today, I am humble and grateful to all who came before us to
give us this great gift.
As I mentioned in previous reports, the board has been working diligently to keep
club expenses to a minimum. However, over the last 10 years inflation has been
approximately 20% and it is evident that our expenses are exceeding the revenue
stream. Printing and mailing are our largest expenditures and is the reason for the
move to electronic format. Notwithstanding, all the budget scrutiny, the board
made a motion to raise membership dues to a level consistent with other corvette
clubs and to keep pace with expense inflation. What this means; a club bylaws
amendment will be presented in the newsletter for 2 months and we as members
will subsequently vote on this amendment. I encourage all of us to support this
amendment as it will ensure our club sustainability and prosperity.
Even with the slow start to the corvette driving season I am trying to take advan-
tage of every event the club has to offer. There is something car related almost
every weekend. Check our calendar on the website because the event list is
updated regularly. This year my Corvette Road Trip will take Diane and me to the
“Corvettes at Carlisle”, PA event then on to Maine with stops on the way. Should
be much fun.
Finally, on July18th we will get to see the 8th generation Corvette. I’m anxious to
see the car and hope it keeps the enthusiasm alive.
See you at the events and Drive Safe,
Dave Benner

to propose to the membership raising dues as follows: Family membership

This would mean a $15 increase for family memberships and a $10 increase
for single memberships. Steven Mael seconded the motion. Motion carried.
It was decided that the proposed dues structure change would be printed in
the Bucket Sheets for two months because it affects the dollar amounts noted
in the bylaws.

C7 low speed sharp turn chattering and bumping sensation.
The following from Corvette Magazine
Chatterbox C7
I just purchased a used 2015 Z51 C7 with 18,000 miles and a manual
transmission. It is number 13 in a string of used, manual-shift Corvettes
I’ve had dating back to the first, a ‘56 model purchased in 1959. The ‘15
is the finest driving and most comfortable of the bunch, and it has none
of the squeaks or rattles others have complained about. However, the
Ackerman Effect-that is, the chatter, hop, skip, thump and bump-of the
front wheels in tight turns is annoying and embarrassing. The alignment
has been checked and was found to be within factory specs. The tires are
the original Michelins that were installed at the factory. Sure, I can drive
using “K” maneuvers to reduce the annoyance, but there must be some
alternate tire compound or other resolution that will lessen the issue and
make this 84-year-old Corvette loyalist even happier.
Bill Xxxx Granville, OH
For readers who aren’t familiar with the Ackerman Effect, it is the phenom-
enon that occurs when a typical four-wheeled (or more) vehicle with front
steering is turned, causing the inside and outside wheels to move at different
speeds and in different radii. If the steering wheels turn at the same angle,
the differences in speed and radii cause the chattering and bumping sen-
sation as tire treads experience side loads that cause the rubber to “bunch
up” and then release suddenly. To eliminate this, the angles of the respective
steering wheels need to be varied from one another as the steering angle
changes. Georg Lankensperger, a 19th-century wooden-wheel maker, figured
out that if the inside wheel is positioned at a sufficiently greater angle than
the outside wheel, then the inside wheel won’t scrub sideways and chatter as
it goes. He then devised a steering-linkage arrangement that altered the an-
gles correctly. A bloke named Rudolph Ackermann patented Lankensperger’s
steering system in Great Britain in 1818, thus giving rise to the term Acker-
man Effect that’s used to this day. So why does your 2015 Corvette thump,
bump, rattle and roll when making tight turns? Accounting for the Ackerman
Effect in the steering geometry reduces a car’s turning radius, and cars with
very wide tires, including late-model Corvettes, already have a more limited
turning radius, so diminishing it more is particularly undesirable. Chevrolet
therefore decided to not eliminate the Ackerman Effect at or near full steer-
ing lock, the goal being to provide owners with as tight a turning radius as
possible. The downside is the chattering you’ve experienced when turning
sharply at low speed. Though this does not harm the car in any way, many,
like you, find it annoying. Unfortunately, there really is no feasible solution,
aside from making wider turns.

Firecracker Cruise June 29, 2019
The cruise left “Me and Julio” in Hastings a few minutes after 10am on a very
warm, sunny, blue sky day. We started with 27 Corvettes and 46 cruise partici-
pants.
Cruising the back roads (as much as possible) brought us to the winding Welch
Village Road. Then county roads 6 and 1, skirting Red Wing working our way
to the wayside rest on US 61 just north of Lake City. From there a loop of
county boulevards’ 2, 3, 5 and MN 58 brought us to our lunch stop at the “Jewel
Golf Club – Bluff side Grill & Bar” where we enjoyed great food with outstand-
ing service. After lunch county roads 4, 10 and US 61 brought us into Wabasha
on MN 60. We crossed the Mississippi into Wisconsin on WI 25, then WI 35 at
Nelson (no time for ice cream however). In Pepin we followed CC to SS to UU
to U to Plum City for a short stop at “Molly’s on Main”. From there US 10 to A
to WI 35 to the cruise end at “Bluffs Bar & Grill” near Hagar City.

DRIVER SCHOOL & LAPPING DAY
AT BRAINERD INTERNATIONAL RACEWAY
JUNE 10, 2019
SEPTEMBER 16, 2019
Presented by
SUBURBAN CORVETTES OF MINNESOTA
Suburban Corvettes of Minnesota will have Two Driver School and Lapping Days at Brainerd International
Raceway in 2019. These driver schools will provide you with the opportunity to develop your driving
skills in the controlled environment of a closed circuit and then they can be used for normal street driving,
autocrossing or racing. It’s also a chance for the experienced racer to get lots of track time.
Whether the sun shines or it rains, the Driver School and Lapping goes on. If the sun shines, it is a great
time to practice the racing line, braking points or just different corner entry or exit points. If it rains, you
will really learn handling techniques for adverse conditions.
There is classroom and braking exercises for the beginner, novice or semi-experienced driver. It is your
chance to learn the basics and also how your car reacts to driver inputs. Ride with Driving Instructors and
see how they handle their car. The Driving Instructors will ride with you and work with you to be more
confident while you drive your car. You should take full advantage of the opportunity to use these
Instructors and gain some of there knowledge.
Lunch is included with your registration. The Wheelie Bar will be open for lunch at 11:00 AM. We will
not break for lunch, so you will need to eat when you can.
There will be a dinner on Sunday night at Arrowood Lodge at Brainerd Lakes for all drivers,
instructors and other volunteers. The dinner starts at 6:30 PM. No reservations are required. We will be
previewing the day at the track events. Great time to meet your instructor and other drivers/volunteers!
June 10, we will be running the 3 mile Donnybrook Track.
Sept. 16, we will be running the 2.5 mile Competition Track.
Come join the EXCITEMENT of the long, fast straight away.

Driving School Update.
Monday June 10. It was a perfect day to be on the track. Temperature was in
the low 70’s, slight breeze and mostly sunny.
We had 35 drivers, which included 10 new novice drivers, plus 2 for track
touring.
There was no major incidences on the track. But we did have to rescue a Turtle
from the track
We had an overwhelming turnout for Corner workers, Thank You, Thank You,
Thank You!!!
Thank You to all workers that came up to help.
Looking forward to seeing everyone in September.
