Report from our President

January 2020

I hope everyone had a great New Years.

First off, I’d like to mention the change in the Jan-
uary Membership meeting date. It will be 1 week
later than normal, on January 28th due to a meeting room at Jimmy’s being
unavailable on the 21st. Apologies for the change of date for the membership
meeting in January. We only found out that our normal 3d Tuesday had been
booked over a year ago by someone else and there was nothing available for
us on our regular date. The rest of the year will be our normal 3d Tuesday of
the month for the membership meetings, normal time, normal place.

I’ve been reading many articles lately and a couple of them caught my at-
tention. First on HRM website relates to the Recognizing of the Protection
of Motorsports Act of 2019 (RPM Act), versions were entered into both the
House of Representatives and Senate lately, there’s more work to do on them
but at least this is a start. In 2015 when the EPA interpreted the Clean Air Act
in a way that made converting street cars to race cars illegal due to removal
of emissions systems, it caused issues with many individuals and companies.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m fully in favor of clean air and keeping our street cars
legal and clean, but this refers to off-road vehicles that typically don’t do that
much driving over a years’ time and not on the streets. The problem I feel
with some of these interpretations like the EPA did is it’s left up to agency in-
dividuals to determine right from wrong, legal or not, if it isn’t spelled out and
it wasn’t previously as in this example so you never know what will happen.
You can thank organizations like SEMA for ramrodding this project along.

Another recent article I read on MSN compared a fairly mature automobile (a
Shelby GT500 with full race setup) against the pre-production C8 in a publi-
cations test, all based on one person’s opinion but this time is was by Randy
Pobst, a respected Race Car driver. To me it’s hard to compare cars when one
hasn’t even been released for production, yet they said how the mature car
compared better than the new C8 in their testing in some testing aspects while
the C8 excelled in others. The author states that the C8 is still in the learning
phase of development, figuring out what works and what doesn’t and even
made some alignment setting changes to the C8 to see how they compared
(which did improve track lap times). The author made a fine comparison of

the 2 cars in my opinion unlike some I’ve read so far: His comparison had the
“Shelby: raging, proficient power”. While the C8 Corvette: “precision, poten-

tial, and style as they are distinctly different cars for different purposes”. It will

be interesting to see what reviewers think once the C8 has been out a while and
things are learned about setting it up for various driving situations, whether
current feeling remain or change over time we’ll just have to wait and see

I saw an ad for someone with a C8 on order willing to sell their slot to someone
desperately wanting a C8, the ad was for $90K with few other details. How
much of the $90K asking price is the pending car and how much is the seller
milking it for what they think they can get; I can only guess. I don’t know if
any part of the $90K relates to the car or if this is what the seller wants for the
slot only. I expect to see more of this in the next few months till cars are actual-
ly being produced and delivered to customers.

One last thing, I thought when I retired, I’d have all this time to do the things
I wanted. Seems like now I have more things to do than I had before I retired
and less time to do them in. I’ve heard this ‘lack of free time’ before from
others and I just thought they were pulling my leg. Looks like they were telling
the truth.
