Report from our President
August 2021
Well another month has passed and time for another
Presidents page. I don’t know about you but we have
not gotten the Vette out as much as I’d like this year but
when we do it’s fun. Instead we’ve spent as much time as
we can with the grandkids this summer so it’s all good.
I happened to see a couple of vintage cars cruising the
other day and realized how cars once were so distinctive
vs. today’s cars. So many of the new cars, it’s hard to tell
the make let alone the model if you don’t see the various
emblems on the cars. So many look to be cookie cutter
cars, like they came out of the same molds and just put a
different emblem on them depending on who was selling
them. At least the Corvette does not fall into that catego-
ry, it’s a shape unto itself.
I’m looking forward to the next HFC along with Cars
Under the Stars. They’ve been a long time coming and I
plan to enjoy them to the hilt. Hope to see you there.

Bob was a passionate and knowledgeable Corvette enthusiast. He joined
SCM in 1998 and regularly participated in club events. He was especially
fond of the Fall Color Run. When appropriate he was always quick to invite
other Corvette owners to visit the club and consider joining.
Bob loved driving his Corvettes. Prior to acquiring the 2011 Grand Sport,
Bob and his wife Pat (including their dog Lacey) regularly drove their 2001
coupe back and forth between MN and their winter home in Arizona. He kept
the 2001 in Arizona, and just prior to his death he had the engine modified to
produce more horsepower since he didn’t want one son to inherit a Corvette
that had more power than the other!
Bob was also passionate about Habitat for Humanity. A Milwaukee, WI
newspaper actually came up to a worksite in St. Paul and interviewed Bob.
It’s a wonderful tribute to Bob.

2021 All Corvette Chili Challenge Summary
The final year of the All Corvette Chili Challenge was a good one. We
celebrated the final year outside in the pavilion at Long lake Regional

We had 109 attendees and 14 chili recipes. We also had over $2,000
in prizes to give away and raffle off. We also had a great selection of
Silent Auction Items to bid on.
We had many complements on the event, the location and the folks
who worked hard to make it happen again. After 25 years Shawn and
Jan Hanna retired from the event as chairs.
Here is the list of winners and they received cash prizes of $100 for

nice set up.
Over the years the All Corvette Chili Challenge has sent over 50 boys
and girls to summer camp at Camp Anokijig. We continued this year
and sent 3 more disadvantaged kids to a summer of fun outdoors.
We would like to thank the helpers who worked hard this year to,
again, put on a fun event: Dave and Lu Kupka, Chris Johnson, Don Get-
tinger, John and Jolynn Wedekind, Vern and Candy DeHoop, Sharon
Koolmo, Max & Karen Allers, AJ and Kathy Kupka, Aaron and Nicolle
Dahle.
Many thanks to all the clubs and individuals who helped fund this

And we were right on budget.

with BIR and his boots on the ground efforts. Thank you David,
it’s a pleasure working with you.
Many thanks to Steve Heasley who continues to work with us to
make our On Line Registration better.

https://www.powernationtv.com/post/would-you-buy-a-four-seat-corvette
WOULD YOU BUY A FOUR-SEAT CORVETTE? - July 30 2021 - PowerNation
What comes to mind when you hear the words Chevrolet Corvette? Two-seater,
America’s sports car, and fast, right? Us too. That’s because two seats are
synonymous with the sports car because, well, it’s the only design since its release.
You’ll likely feel the same we did when you see the photos General Motors shared
recently on their Instagram, showing us how close we were to that reality.
Talk about weird, right? Even with their mid-engine step into the future and moving
the engine behind the driver seats, we’re learning it wasn’t the only idea the auto-
maker had to put back there. General Motors posted some rare images of a four-seat
second-generation Corvette they designed and built in 1962. The photos shared by
the design team showed the unique four-seater C2 Stingray prototype.
You might be wondering, what was the purpose of this unfathomable Vette? The
four-seat Corvette was conceived by the design team to compete with the Ford
Thunderbird. During that period in history, the Thunderbird was decimating the
Vette in sales. In August 1962, the boss at the time Ed Cole, assigned the
project to C2 Corvette Designer to Larry Shinoda, says GM Authority.
General Motors went as far as purchasing a four-seat Ferrari to find inspiration
for this unusual project. However, the objective was to make the Corvette more
spacious for Americans. The elongated fastback gave it a unique profile, but
executives opted against following through, and the mockup was destroyed.
The idea came up again in 1980 when General Motors reached out to California
Custom Coach to build six four-door Corvettes. They wanted T-tops over both rows
of seats to do testing and see if there was a market for this type of car. However,
you can see that idea didn’t go far, which was due to its substantial price of $35,000,
almost triple the amount of a two-door at the time. The idea was quickly scrapped.
However, one of the prototypes made it through and was sold last year for $100,000.
Had the idea come to fruition, it’s something we’d be used to seeing today. Since it
didn’t, it’s quite a shock, but it makes us wonder if history was different, what would
have happened? The Corvette lives on, while the Thunderbird was discontinued in
1997, so it’s safe to say who won that battle.
