TECHNOLOGY
IS A USEFUL SERVANT BUT A
___________DANGEROUS MASTER
by
NUR MURSYIDAH BT MOHD ZAKI
Introduction
“Technology is a useful servant, but a
dangerous master”. This is a true statement
because it can be used to do work just like a
slave, and sometimes it can be a dangerous
tool to students especially when it starts to
control them, as a master does.
Mobile phones and students just don't
separate while it's like basic needs to others
nowadays. Despite the reasons that using a
mobile phone is vital and needed, it should
not be used outrageously because it will
affect students' academic integrity, causing
social problems and potential impacts on
health.
2
To start, the first big reason is that mobile
phones will affect students’ academic
integrity which is causing a sense of laziness.
For example, some students will just take
pictures of notes on a whiteboard without
willingly putting them on a book with a pen. It
looks better than not doing anything, but it
will affect students’ understanding and their
responsibility.
According to studies, 90 percent of a
lesson can be remembered effectively when
we take notes during a learning session.
3
Besides, it has the potential for cheating
either in schoolwork or examination and it is
not fair to the students who study hard. It will
also make bad habits for their job or college
where cheating is not acceptable and also the
teacher cannot measure the actual ability
level of a student.
In addition, it is also the cause of
procrastination when they are more focused
and pay attention towards the mobile phones
rather than their more interesting study and
the entertainment on it will make them feel
relaxed and calm.
4
Instead of their studying, it makes them more
stressed which is needed to think a lot and be
critical. In short, delaying a job until it piles up is
called procrastination.
According to the author’s observation, those
who tend to use mobile phones in performing
tasks, do not utilize the brain on it which they
consider solving problems easily without stress.
We must avoid this habit because we need to
train our brains always to keep it fresh.
5
Next, it caused social problems such as
cyberbullying. Sometimes, mobile phones are
used to bully other peers when they are not
monitored by their keeper or parents.
How can cyberbullying happen?
All right, it always happens in social media
and their impacts are the worst among others. In
our unconscious, the negative comments of
netizens on social media are cyberbullying. The
comment is not wrong as long as the comment
is constructive and for improvement.
In addition, among the examples of
cyberbullying is also the robbery of money online
or better known as scammer.
6
For instance, lack of self-confidence is one of
the negative effects of bullying, however, it will
be known by others who see that. Instead of
cyberbullying, which none does not know
neither their parents nor friends till they share
about it, and of course they will turn into mental
stress.
Commonly, underage students are less
knowledgeable about able and disabled
matters. Therefore, if their actions are not
monitored and supervised, making they are free
to do anything without actual limits and
limitations. For instance, they might be
accessing inappropriate things like pornography
or being involved in online gambling.
7
Apart from compromising academic
integrity and causing social problems, the
use of mobile phones also hurts health
conditions.
First and foremost, it causes eye damage
such as watery eyes. Currently, people who
wear glasses are more prevalent among
children and teenagers than among the
elderly. Most of these teenagers or children
suffer from farsightedness and glare as a
result of the light rays found on the screens
of gadgets.
Do we know? The light exposure of the
gadget screen to the eyes at a rate of over
two hours a day increases the rate of
farsightedness at a young age. Once in
Malaysia, the youngest child to wear glasses
was a 3-year-old.
8
Moreover, it makes one too addicted to
mobile phones even though they know it is
bad for their culture, life, and healthiness.
Automatically, they will skip their meals
and leading to disease and gastric.
Sometimes, they will eat while using mobile
phones, and that is too addictive. Skipping
meals not only contributes to gastric, despite
substance deficiency and weakness.
Some students are willing to stay up late at
night simply for a fast internet network to
gaming or watch movies such as Netflix. In a
nutshell, “ Prevention is better than cure’’. So,
it is vital to care about our health before it
becomes worse.
9
Conclusion
To conclude, technology is very useful if
used to facilitate work and in matters of
goodness. But, it will be a dangerous master if
used in a way of evil matters.
