Solomon Valley Annual Report Final

Solomon Valley Annual Report Final

01 | Annual Report 2020

Our Mission

is to help people invest in meaningful ways to
make a difference in the community by building
permanent endowment funds and meeting
charitable community needs.

DIRECTOR'S LETTER
Dear Supporters of Solomon Valley Community
Foundation,

What a year it has been!

Reflecting back on 2020, and my first full year with
Solomon Valley Community Foundation, I am continually
grateful for the opportunity to live in and serve the
communities of Mitchell County.

During a time of unprecedented challenges, our
communities of Mitchell County stood together to support
and uplift one another. Through the development of
Mitchell County Strong, the foundation's collaboration
with Solomon Valley Economic Development and the
Beloit Area Chamber of Commerce, we were able to
quickly pump dollars back into local businesses, support
frontline workers, provide grocery assistance and create a
Disaster Relief Fund for local nonprofits. The success of the
Mitchell County Strong program is truly a testament to
the people of Mitchell County.

I am looking forward to a positive and productive 2021. As
always, thank you to our donors for continually supporting
the establishment of permanent endowment funds that
will forever impact our communities.

Thank you,

Colleen Eberle, Executive Director

MITCHELL
COUNTY STRONG

The Mitchell County Strong (MCS) program started as a
collaboration between the Solomon Valley Community Foundation,
the Beloit Area Chamber of Commerce, and Solomon Valley
Economic Development as a way to support local businesses,
nonprofits, and residents of Mitchell County during the COVID-19
pandemic. What started with a "Buy One, Give One" program soon
expanded to a Disaster Relief Fund, Hungry Hungry Heros program,
and an MCS online auction. Mitchell County Strong has become a
platform that will continue working to benefit, promote, and
support the communities of Mitchell County.

COMMUNITY SIGN
FOR HUNTER

The only way to share news and information about community
events in the City of Hunter was through a single blackboard by the
community center. Citizens and tourists could only view the
blackboard from one direction when they were already in town.
The Hunter Economic Development Corporation wanted to make a
change. "Our goal is to highlight our community café and the
many hunting operations in the area that bring outside business to
the community," said grantee Steven Schneider. With the support
from a Solomon Valley Community Foundation grant, the
development corporation was able to purchase a community sign
and hardware for this project. The new sign is located at the corner
of Highway 181, 1st Street and Main Street for maximum visibility.

"The community sign has become a focal point of Main Street in
Hunter, Kansas. We have had many comments on how well the
sign is positioned for everyone to read from four different
directions," said Schneider. “The sign allowed us to reach and be a
small part of the lives of everyone in town and the outside
communities.”

"The boxes we were able to purchase have made an
immediate impact with our students. The kids feel 100%
more comfortable jumping onto soft foam rather than the
boxes we had for the last 20 years."

BRAD GOBER

STRENGTH AND
CONDITIONING

As the strength and conditioning program at Beloit Jr/Sr High
School grows, the weight room requires more updating. One staple
movement in the weight room is box jumps. These help improve
power, force, explosion and the athletes verticals. The community
foundation awarded USD 273 funding to purchase two stackable
soft plyo boxes to replace the previous wood ones.

“The boxes we were able to purchase have made an immediate
impact with our students. The kids feel 100% more comfortable
jumping onto soft foam rather than the boxes that we had for
the last 20 years,” said grantee Brad Gober.

UPDATES TO THE MC

HISTORICAL SOCIETY

In 2016, the Michell County Historical Society started renovating the bar
area of the old American Legion building for use as a fine arts area, office
space and early learning area. The walls in the building have been
moved, electrical work done and a new HVAC was installed.

With the Solomon Valley Community Foundation’s support, the
historical society was able to purchase materials for flooring and trim
that was installed in the fine arts and early learning area of the new
museum complex. “Through many donated hours from skilled artists,
the fine arts area was transformed into a piece of art itself. Artists utilized
artifacts from other entities that were donated to the museum,” said
grantee Kyle Peterson.

Peterson mentioned that the progress of the fine arts area has
motivated others to work on other parts of the building, “It has pushed
donors and volunteers to finish the office areas and the historical library.
The MCHS board and membership is very excited to start moving
displays to the new museum this next year.”

DOWNTOWN
SOUND SYSTEM

At a Mitchell County Strategic Doing meeting, the downtown
development committee presented that installing a sound system was
one of their main priorities. “The idea for a sound system has been talked
about in the community for a while. Even with the rate of new technology,
it has taken a long time to find a system that would work with our
infrastructure,” said Julia Rabe.

“We were able to kick off the fundraising for this project thanks to the
community foundation. We raised over $26,000 total and a big start was
this $3,000 grant,” said Rabe. “Our downtown sound system has made a
very positive impact in our community.”

"Purchasing the viewfinder would not have been possible without this grant. It is
an important part of giving visitors and residents a way to appreciate the
Waconda Lake and Glen Elder State Park as an important part of Kansas history."
LUCILLE HELLER

WACONDA SPRINGS
VIEWFINDER

Visitors will now be able to enjoy views of the Waconda Springs Replica through a viewfinder along the bluffs
of Glen Elder State Park. In the spring of 2019, the Waconda Cultural Association received a $3,545 grant from
the community foundation’s Dane G. Hansen Community Grant Fund to purchase a viewfinder, directional
signage and a floating buoy to mark the location of the original Waconda Springs.

“Purchasing the viewfinder would not have been possible without this grant. It is an important part of giving
visitors and residents a way to appreciate the Waconda Lake and Glen Elder State Park as an important part of
Kansas history,” said grantee Lucille Heller. The historical buoy is a visual answer to one of the most asked
questions, “Where is Waconda Springs?” and will serve as a new destination for those boating the lake. Hikers
along the bluff can also use the viewfinder to discover the location of the springs next to the original channel
of the Solomon River.
