FY20 Russell County Annual Report

FY20 Russell County Annual Report

01 | Annual Report 2020

Our Mission

is to help people invest in meaningful ways to
make a difference in the community by building
permanent endowment funds and meeting
charitable community needs.

DIRECTOR'S LETTER

Dear Friends,

The Russell Area Community Foundation is excited to share
some of our favorite stories about grant making in local
communities - the places we call home. As you look
through this annual report, we hope you will be inspired
and reflect on how you can make a difference with your
charitable legacy.

The community foundation was started nearly 20 years ago
by donors who wanted to invest locally in hometown
schools, parks, arts, recreation and people. Because of their
generosity, over the years the community foundation has
grown and granted more than $4 million dollars to the
Russell County area. Supporting the community
foundation ensures that the things you love about the
Russell County area live on for generations to come.

Thank you for your continued support of the Russell County
Area Community Foundation. Our future is bright as we
celebrate local investment in the places we call home.

Angela Muller, RCACF
Executive Director

KINDERGARTEN
STEM KITS

STEM stand for science, technology, engineering, and math.
Students are presented with hands-on activities that demand a
higher level of thinking skills to work in the real world. Materials
are needed in the classroom to follow the STEM curriculum. The
community foundation awarded USD 407 a grant to purchase five
different types of building kits for the kindergarten classrooms.

Since implementing these kits, Kim Boxberger mentioned seeing
an improvement in not only students motor skills but also
behaviors as well. "The grant exceeded my expectation of the idea
I originally had in mind because many students don't have access
to these items at home. As a kindergarten team, we feel that
problem-solving, communication and a bit of engineering were
successfully introduced," said Boxberger.

"The additional space and seating allow Kid-Link
to meet the specific needs of each child served."

SAMANTHA MONTGOMERY

DSNWK
OUTGREW SPACE

As Developmental Services of Northwest Kansas grows, so does the
need for more space. The organization outgrew the meeting room
at the Pioneer Developmental Center, so the community
foundation awarded the organization two grants to renovate the
center in order to more efficiently use the space.

DSNWK was able to convert the space into three offices and a large
conference room as well as purchase new furniture. "DSNWK is
thankful for the office and conference space, as well as the table
and chairs utilized in the area," said grantee Samantha
Montgomery. "The additional space and seating allow Kid-Link to
meet the specific needs of each child served. Our specialists can
meet and review individual needs, discuss challenges, develop
options for goals, and provide a safe and clean space for numerous
potential testings that a child may be needing."

'REALITY U' COMES
TO RUSSELL HIGH

How do youth make the transition from being a student, to
having real world responsibilities of their own? How do they
decide what they want out of life, or better yet, how to achieve
their goals? Reality U is a program that works with students to
implement financial goals, understand money management and
the different sources of income and the relationship between
income and career prep.

This project is significant because soon, students will be on their
own with these responsibilities. The community foundation
awarded USD 407 a grant to bring Reality U to Russell High
School. This program reached 130 students who learned what
the real world was like in simulation.

Grantee Rashelle Schlyer said, "This grant was a tremendous
influence on our project's effectiveness because it is something
we would not have been able to do without these funds. The
students talked about their experiences and frequently asked if
life is REALLY like this."

DEINES CULTURAL
RENOVATION

Due to the overwhelming expense of the renovation to the
Deines Cultural Center, many plans that were designed in the
past were unattainable. Since the founding of the Deines, the
upstairs had been left unfinished, but with potential for
additional space for visual art, presentations and public events.
With the support from the community foundation, the second
floor landing of the Deines was recently transformed. The funds
were used to install the wall, floor, and movable wall for the
upstairs foyer gallery displaying the collection of the Friends of
the Deines.

"What looked like haphazard storage and neglected space is
now a usable room for art display and events," said grantee
Shannon Trevethan. "This not only makes a great place to
showcase the artwork the Friends of the Deines have collected
through donations, but adds an elegant ambiance for private
and public events hosted at the Deines. This project would have
never happened without the help of the community foundation.
There is more to be done, but this is a huge step in the right
direction. Thank you."

Home Is... WHERE PEOPLE SHARE
THEIR GIFTS

"As a result of this project, we have reignited the love for our neighborhood lighting
displays. This grant gave this project its life. Without the funds, we would never
have been able to purchase the materials necessary to complete them."

ANDREA KRAUSS

PLAZA ON THE PLAINS

Russell's neighborhood lighting display, "Plaza on the Plains," is a tradition that has started in the community
decades ago. Each neighborhood has a different lighted yard display, but over the years when people have moved
or passed, the displays have decreased.

The Russell County Area Community Foundation awarded the Russell Pride committee funding to revive this
tradition, which also goes hand in hand with the other Christmas events throughout the community. "As result of
this project, we have reignited the love for our neighborhood lighting displays," said grantee Andrea Krauss. "This
grant gave this project its life. Without the funds, we would never have been able to purchase the materials
necessary to complete them."
