Spring has finally arrived at Town & Country Club!

It’s that time of year when many of us are asking “Hey Bill Larson, when are you opening the gates to
play golf?”

We are so fortunate to have the best golf course superintendent around.  As I write this note to you,
Bill has all hands-on deck (Including a General Manager and a Golf Pro which will remain nameless!)
pulling off the mats that cover our greens.  He is cautiously optimist that our course came through
the brutal winter in good shape.  Hopefully we will see that thermometer rise to get the growing
season going.

Tom Skogland and his staff are busy preparing for another golf season.  Please make sure you call or
stop in to sign up for your favorite golf league.  And if you are new to our Club, the Pro Shop is ready
to help you make the best choice so you can really enjoy your golf experience.

The Club House is in Easter preparation mode and we hope many of you will be able to enjoy all the
festivities that we have planned.  Chef Francisco and his staff continue to outdo themselves and the
Easter Brunch will be no different.

The one business item I would like to share this month is Club Governance.  As many of you know,
we have revised the bylaws in 2018.  The new bylaws allow us to conduct business under a solid set
of principals that will withstand the test of time but allow the Club to be flexible with the day-to-day
rules and policies that we all need to provide a good member experience.

Over the past year, our rules committee has reviewed our club rules, along with many from
surrounding country clubs.  From this diligent work our Club now has a Rules and Polices Manual
that will help all members and staff enjoy and provide a good Club experience. Please look for these
rules to be published this month.

As a final note, we now have a waiting list for both Social and Intermediate memberships.  There is
still   room for anyone interested in Corporate membership.  Please have them contact Tregg.

See you at the Club.

Spring must be here because as I look out the window, I see Bill Larson uncovering the
greens. I’m sure everyone is anxiously waiting to be outside without a winter coat. Our
snowbirds will be returning soon and the club has planned a variety of golf and programming
events to keep everyone busy during the summer.
We are all looking forward to Chef Francisco’s new Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner menus that
will be starting the first week of April. With the increase in membership we have received
questions on the Server Gratuity Line. There are two lines on every bill that I feel should be
clarified.

First is the Service Charge. The club charges a 18% Service Charge on every Restaurant
and Bar ticket. The Service Charge is the property of the club, 35% of which the club
retains, and 65% of which is gifted into a pool that the employees divide by hours worked.

Secondly, the Server Gratuity line will go directly to the server or bartender, and the club
receives none of these monies. We added this line about one year ago in response to
numerous inquiries on how members can leave additional gratuities to the staff. You should
not feel obligated to add an additional server gratuity as it is already included on the bill. This
was intended to reward outstanding service—not to reward mediocre service.

As we approach better weather there are a few reminders about our dining services. The club
will still be closing at 3:00pm on Sundays until May 19th (historically the 1st Sunday after
Mother’s Day). However if the weather cooperates and play is strong on the course, we will
revisit Sunday’s food service availability. Beginning in May the Card Room will be utilized for
Men’s League starting at 2:00pm and signs will be posted on the Card Room entrances
informing everyone about the closure of the room. When the patio opens please remember
that all tables are on a first come-first serve basis—no reservations will be accepted at any
time.

I look forward to seeing everyone at the club, and if you ever have any questions please
contact me anytime.

Turfgrass Update

Happy Spring from your Turfgrass Team!

Now that the snow is almost gone, I am sure everyone is wondering when we are going to
open and how the course survived?   The past winter obviously was a strange one.  A rain
event right after Christmas, lots of ice, freeze/thaw occurrences, no real snow
accumulation through January and then copious amounts of snow!  What will the spring
bring??

As of today, the course survived fairly well.  A few greens have some spots that suffered
some minor damage very similar to our putting green.  The next few days will be critical
for the fragile grasses (specifically Poa annua) to see if they can survive once they are
uncovered and exposed to the weather.  Warm temperatures and occasional rains would
be welcomed at this point to accelerate turf growth and frost removal from the ground.

In the days ahead, you will learn that many courses in the area have suffered turf loss
from the interesting winter weather we just experienced. The main grasses affected are
Ryegrass and Annual Bluegrass (Poa annua).  On greens, Poa annua thrives where there is
no morning sun, has competition from trees, poor drainage and soil compaction issues.
We have been proactive over the last 10 years or so removing trees around our greens
and other areas of the course. This enables the stronger varieties to survive specifically
Creeping Bentgrass. With our tree removal program and the way we manage our greens,
our Bentgrass population is increasing! Without the removal of trees around greens, we
would of suffered significant turf loss.  In the coming years, you will notice other courses
increasingly removing trees near greens.

We will continue to clean up the course preparing for the upcoming season. As of today,
we have not established an opening date.  We will continue to communicate over the
next few days.

Bill Larson, CGCS
