The Mirror: Ihwai nekuhwikwa Local news Page 4 5 - 11 January 2024 www.masvingomirror.com 071 689 5703 Chipinge Times & Two Nations Editor: Ellen Mlambo Editorial Comment As the Christmas and New Yea festive season bids farewell the nation is heaving a sigh of relief simply because it is during this period that most of our road accidents happen. High road accident figures continue to haunt Zimbabwe as road users are killed often in large numbers. Frequent head on collisions usually claim several lives as they involve more than one vehicle. These are often cases of reckless driving as one of the drivers would have deliberately made a decision to overtake where overtaking is prohibited or just encroached into the lane of oncoming traffic. Some drivers are tempted and decide to speed especially on the new or recently rehabilitated highways and end up losing control, dangerously overtaking or even hitting pedestrians. Other drivers will drink alcohol and decide to drive when they have been incapacitated. A drunk driver will easily end up having an accident. Many people who are not qualified and do not have a driver’s licence are making the decision to drive and actually drive around our roads but often ending up in road accidents due to their inability to drive properly. Some drivers will decide to get onto the road although they know that their vehicles have defects and faults that can cause accidents. Others will decide to overload their vehicles with passengers or goods putting them at risk of accidents. Passing through all these scenarios is a common thread of deliberate decisions consciously taken by drivers that eventually result in road accidents. What is needed here on the part of each and every driver is an awareness of one’s decisions and the possible or likely results before and during driving. Admittedly any human being can make a mistake, however let it be a genuine mistake that can be excusable. Most of the accidents that happen in our country are not excusable as they are caused by deliberate actions of careless, reckless and selfish drivers. Road accidents are preventable CHIBHORANI TALK WITH SEKURU TAURAI Happy New Year to you all Chibhoraniland citizens. A bit late with my wishes, am I? Well we are only a few days into the new year of 2024. It is still hot, so New Year wishes are still in order. However someone can say that actually there is nothing new about 1st January because every day of the year is just as new as the other. Some people actually celebrate their New Year not on January 1st but on some other dates. 2023 came and is now history, quite a tough year it was for most of us in the lowest and no income brackets. Prices and money rates went down and up and down. Divorce, rape and gender based violence went up. Domestic violence went up with many family members killing each other. Robberies went up with some resulting in serious injuries and death. More deaths were reported as people mostly for the most trivial reasons killed each other while some killed themselves after failing to take on the challenges of life. Different diseases claimed the lives of both children and adults although they could have been prevented from doing so by some people. Corruption is going up pretty fast in Chibhoraniland in spite of preventive and punitive measures taken by the Anti-Corruption body and stakeholders. Chibhoraniland politics continues to bring sorrow and despair to many, especially during and after elections. Drug abuse shot up as mostly young people including primary school learners found themselves taking all sorts of intoxicating substances and alcohol grown, distributed and sold to people by other people. Formal employment became an unattainable dream especially for numerous school leavers and unemployed youths with many turning to drugs and the diaspora. The question here is how can we reach Vision 2030 with all this happening in Chibhoraniland? Yes, we may go ahead and build super highways and byways, huge dams, smart cities, beautiful residential and commercial buildings and other state of the art structures towards Vision 2030 but if we fail to address the abovementioned issues we will definitely not get anywhere. It is important that we heavily invest in building a nation that has citizens who are aware that they are people because of other people and behave accordingly. Pasina hunhu hapana Vision 2023. The Mirror: Ihwai nekuhwikwa Page 5 5 - 11 January 2024 www.masvingomirror.com GARIKAI MAFIRAKUREVA MIRROR REPORTER HARARE - A group of Israeli businessmen allegedly swindled of US$3 million by Prophetic Healing and Deliverance Ministries (PHD) church leader Prophet Walter Magaya has warned that it will take the man of cloth to international courts if they don’t get justice from local courts. The matter is before the High Court of Zimbabwe under Case No. HCH621/23 and the Israelis are being represented by Doug Chanawa of Chanawa Law Chambers Investments and Commercial Law. Magaya allegedly received the amount through Ronny Levi Musan, the Consul General of Zimbabwe in Israeli appointed by President Emmerson Mnangagwa. Musan expressed shock at the scam although he says he still maintains confidence in President Mnangagwa and in Zimbabwe as a safe investment destination. The agreement between Magaya and a group of Israeli partners which was chaired by Musan was signed on May 12, 2022 in the presence of their Israeli lawyer Akiva Rosner and Everson Chatambudza of Rubaya & Chatambudza Legal Practitioners who is Magaya’s lawyer. The businessmen said in a statement released to The Mirror that it was unheard of in Israel that a man of God could swindle people in the name of God. They also complained against swindlers using pictures taken with President Mnangagwa to deceive investors. “We hope that we will get justice in the courts in Zimbabwe; justice that will give other foreign investor confidence that their money is safe and justice that will act as deterrence to would be swindlers. “If we do not receive justice, we have all the power and financial capability to sue Magaya in international courts. We will not give up on our honour and on our money in anyway,” read the statement released by lawyer Rosner in Israel. Magaya allegedly received US$3 million to start a joint venture gold mining project with the Israelis in Zimbabwe. He however, disappeared immediately after receiving the money and did not fulfil any of the contractual obligations agreed upon. It is alleged that no major mining activity has started at the mine and no operating permits have been obtained. The statement said apart from taking Magaya to Court, they now want him arrested. “Magaya is lying to investors hiding behind the President’s pictures. It’s time for people to realise that not everyone who takes a picture with the President has the integrity of the President. “We love the President, respect and appreciate him,” said the statement. This is not the first time that investors with close links to Zanu PF or President Mnangagwa had duped international investors. Two years ago, Botswana-based investors were sent from pillar to post after Ragin Kassim of Bradfix Incorporated (Pvt) LTD in Masvingo allegedly duped them of US$795 000. They tried every Police station, every court and every lawyer but the intrinsic network of the swindlers appeared too complicated for them to unravel. The investors made an urgent chamber application under case number HC39- 21, seeking interim relief for all mining operations at Golden Hill Mine Mashava to be suspended, barred or prohibited. The applicants had turned a once dormant mine into a thriving business enterprise and injected US$795 000 into the said mining project. The matter was heard by Justice Neville Wamambo who removed it from the roll on April 23, 2021 on the basis that it was not urgent. It is understood that the frustrated investors left the country and never came back. The Isaralis’ statement said that the investors were exposed to Zimbabwe though the “excellent work” of Musan. They said without him they would never have set foot in Zimbabwe. Magaya entered the picture following his many years of acquaintance with the Ambassador. “He introduced us to his church, his hotel and his plan to develop a gold mine with a community participation programme. He used his connection to the Ambassador to get money from us. Without the Ambassador he would not have got a cent from us,” read the statement. The statement further alleges that Magaya tried to give US$500 000 of the amount to the Ambassador who refused it. The Ambassador allegedly informed the investors about the unusual offer. According to the agreement, Magaya was going to hold 57% shares and the Israelis 43% with a personal guarantee of Magaya on the principal investment that all the funds would be used to develop the mine. The statement said Magaya unashamedly used his Church, God’s name and the trust that the Ambassador had in him to swindle the investors of their money. “It turns out to us that there are people who use God’s house and name for greed and fraud and they still dare to call themselves God’s people,” read the statement. According to the agreement, Magaya was supposed to use his properties including a hotel in Waterfalls as security but the stories changed after he received the money. He did not even comply with the terms for the transfer of the mine’s proprietary rights, alleges the statement. “As soon as he got what he wanted, his lawyers stopped communicating with us,” reads the statement. Ironically, Mnangagwa recently officially opened a state of the art stadium built by Magaya. Musan said he was marketing Zimbabwe in Israeli on the basis that Israeli is the Biblical Promised land to the people of Israeli and Zimbabwe is the promised land for investment and economic prosperity for the whole world. He said dishonest businessman were denting the country’s image and compromising the country’s chances of getting more investment. Magaya’s spokesperson, Admire Mango, could not be reached for comment as his mobile went unanswered. Israelis ready to take Magaya to international courts

ELLEN MLAMBO MIRROR REPORTER MASVINGO - A four-yearold boy now on oxygen at Chitungwiza Hospital’s life is hanging by a thread after he got ZWL$2,4 million for hospital bills from the Insurance Company of Zimbabwe (ICZ) following a bus accident. Bernard Masamba, the unemployed parent of Auditor complained that the money was far too little as hospital bills ballooned to US$600 and the boy who is on oxygen still needs more attention. ZWL$2,4m is worth US$200 and all medical requirements are bought in US$. The boy was injured when an Inter Africa bus he was travelling on got involved in an accident near Marondera on December 27, 2023. ICZ is Inter-Africa Bus Service’s insurer. Inter Africa employee handling the insurance issue, Washington Marambe confirmed the matter to The Mirror. He however accused Masamba of overreacting since the matter is now with Inter-Africa bosses. Efforts to get a comment from Insurance Company of Zimbabwe (ICZ) were futile as Ester Matenda contacted by The Mirror referred questions to Nicholas Sayi, the acting chief executive officer whose phone went unanswered. “He brought his complaint to me and I have referred the matter to my bosses so that the issue of the medical bills can be looked into again. After reporting his injured son to me I referred him to ICZ, our insurance company. The matter is not exhausted but he rushed to the Press,” said Marambe. Efforts to get a comment from the Insurance and Pensions Commission (IPEC) were futile. The accident involved a Mukumba brothers’ bus, Inter Africa, a Mercedes benz and a haulage truck along the Harare-Mutare highway. Masamba said Auditor who was travelling with his grandmother was injured on the forehead and back and was taken to Marondera Provincial Hospital where he was referred to Chitungwiza Central on the same day. Auditor had a CT scan done at West End Clinic. His brain was swollen and he required a collar neck. Masamba said he did not receive any assistance from Inter Africa until he approached their offices where he was referred to ICZ. “The father is over reacting, he threatened to take the matter to the Press. His problem is that he is overreacting and rushing to the Press,” he said. Injured boy gets ZWL$2m from Insurance Company

The Mirror: Ihwai nekuhwikwa Page 8 5 - 11 January 2024 www.masvingomirror.com Optimism: embracing the power of positive thinking BY ALPHIOUS MUGARI Optimism involves a positive attitude, and mentality that is characterised by hope and confidence in success, and a positive future. Common rituals, such as New Year’s resolutions, always remind us on the value of optimism. A positive mentality helps improve confidence, resilience, happiness, success, as well as mental and physical health. It is also strongly linked to reduced stress levels, better coping skills and improved interpersonal relationships. Building optimism is a journey that requires selfawareness, determination, and constant practice. Every human being must strive to have optimism to live a better live, and to create a better world. Benefits of Optimism In a world with constant challenges, and uncertainties that include poverty, hunger, crime, violence, inequalities, diseases and natural disasters, optimism emerges as a necessary transformative force. Optimistic mentality empowers individuals to face adversity, seize opportunities, and live a fulfilling life. Optimists strongly believe that there is always light at the end of the tunnel, so they are always persistent and hopeful. During the Covid 19 pandemic, some people became hopeless, whilst optimists saw an opportunity to invest in some businesses and personal growth. Most inventors and great leaders are optimists who sought solutions to problems despite several failures and criticism. Research has consistently linked optimism to overall health, wellbeing, and longevity. People with optimism have better coping mechanisms in response to life stressors. They experience lower depression, stress and anxiety compared to pessimists. Positive thinkers tend to live longer, healthier lives since they normally have lower blood pressure, improved immune function, and reduced risk of chronic diseases. They also have greater survival rates when fighting chronic illnesses such as cancer. People Living with HIV, who are optimistic, are more likely to plan their recoveries, seek further information, engage in daily activities, and remain hopeful. Optimism is also strongly linked to greater chances of success, and resilience in life. Positive psychology has shown that optimistic individuals and teams are more resilient and persistent than their pessimistic counterparts. Several studies have shown that optimistic individuals tend to be more proactive, creative, and adaptable, making them more successful in life. People who are optimistic are more likely to persist until their goals are achieved, and find it easier to shake off a bad outcome so that it doesn’t affect them in their next attempt. Optimism is one of the most powerful inner tools for motivation, both at individual level, and in groups. Expressing Optimism is very crucial when we work with others. If there is a very stressful incident or period, a leaders’ expression of optimism creates an environment that fosters productivity, engagement and innovation. Optimism also helps to improve people’s resilience to tragedy and trauma. It helps to propels people towards greater success, instilling the motivation to pursue dreams with unwavering determination. People with a positive mentality also experience a higher level of self-esteem because of their confidence levels which are high. They also exhibit great leadership skills, and have a remarkable ability to inspire others. Optimism expands possibilities through enabling individuals to see opportunities where others are seeing challenges. Optimism is contagious, and it can create a ripple effect that can transform teams, organizations and even nations. Optimism is also greatly linked to a growth mindset, which is the belief that our abilities and intelligence can be improved through dedication and hard work. It strongly enhances interpersonal relationships, hence optimistic individuals tend to be more positive and supportive in their interactions with others resulting in stronger social support networks, and successful interpersonal relationships. Improving Optimism Practicing gratitude plays a significant role in improving optimism. Optimists are always thankful for what they have, and they share with others. By regularly acknowledging and appreciating the positive aspects of life, individuals can shift focus from what is lacking, fostering a sense of abundance and contentment. A gratitude journal can be used to write a list of all the gifts and blessings that an individual is thankful about. These may include current health, friends, or a kind gesture received. Focusing on personal strengths, like creativity, perseverance, kindness or curiosity also helps to build a positive mentality. Before going to sleep each day, consider your personal accomplishments, both minor and major, as well as parts of the day you enjoyed. Ending your day with positive emotions and thoughts help individuals sleep better and wake up in a happier mood. Associating with optimistic and supportive people, improves a positive mentality among individuals. Social connections have a profound impact on one’s emotions, thoughts and perspectives. It is therefore helpful to seek out and spend more time with people who radiate positivity. Building and maintaining positive and supportive relationships provide a sense of belonging, encouragement, and inspiration. Individuals must find an optimistic mentor or network whose behaviours they observe and emulate. Self-care is a very important component of improving one’s positive mentality. Even in the busiest schedules or in stressful situations, always make time to care for your personal needs. Having a positive outlook becomes easier when you are feeling healthy, rested and nourished; hence individuals must get adequate sleep, meditate, maintain a balanced diet, and engage in regular physical activity. On the other hand, serving others through acts of kindness has also proved to increase positivity. Service to others helps people forget their own problems or at least put them into perspective. Visualising a positive future and having set goals help to improve optimism. Optimists anticipate positive results in various aspects of their life, such as personal relationships, health, work, school, and overall well-being. Through imagining positive outcomes, individuals can stimulate feelings of hope, inspiration and motivation. Larger ambitions can be broken into smaller tasks so that one can notice and celebrate each milestone. For example, if you want to learn a new language, set smaller objectives related to that bigger goal, such as learning to say numbers. Visualization techniques are commonly used by athletes, entrepreneurs, great leaders, and high achievers to boost motivation, confidence and focus. Spending time on hobbies or activities that boost one’s mood is a significant way of improving optimism. Some of the hobbies and activities may include travelling, reading, praying, charity work, or engaging in sporting activities. Such activities help to reduce stress levels and increase positive energy. It is also important to incorporate positive feedback for yourself and celebrate your achievements, whether big or small. Learning to accept compliments helps to increase a positive mentality. Individuals must normalise feeling good about the compliments they receive. Some people find it difficult to accept compliments; however learning to receive compliments can help cultivate more positive emotions. On the other hand, individuals must develop positive mantras, or affirmations to improve their optimism, and create more positive energy. They can write down positive mantras, meditate on them, and engage in positive self-talk, to become more optimistic. Trying new things, and exploring unfamiliar concepts, skills or experience boosts positivity. Getting out of the comfort zone help individuals feel more excited about distinct possibilities in life. Even after failures, optimists always look on the positive side. If one misses a deadline for a project at work, they can focus on what they learned from that experience. Focus is therefore given to the process rather than the results. Optimism can also be improved significantly through reframing negative thoughts. Through cognitive restructuring, individuals can become more optimistic by consciously challenging negative, self-limiting thoughts, and finding positive interpretations of situations. Over time, this will train one’s mind to naturally provide more positive attitudes and beliefs. One can seek professional help from psychologists to challenge their pessimistic attitudes and cultivate a more optimistic mindset. Conclusion The power of optimism is undeniable, and it can be developed and strengthened through evidence based strategies. Positive mentality is a catalyst for personal growth, resilience, success and overall wellbeing. By adopting optimism, individuals can build stronger relationships, overcome adversities as well as embrace a brighter future. Everyone must ride the train of optimism and enjoy its numerous benefits. Alphious is a registered Intern Community Psychologist - AHPCZ (A/PSY0796) [email protected] 0773 227 688

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced the news in a social media post Wednesday, heralding the return of over 200 Ukrainian soldiers and civilians from Russian captivity. The two sides have exchanged prisoners throughout the conflict but this is the first major swap since August. Among the group are seven soldiers who defended Snake Island, a rocky island in the Black Sea which became an evocative symbol of Ukrainian resistance in February 2022 when Ukrainian defenders managed to fend off a takeover from Russian soldiers. In this photo provided by the Ukrainian Presidential Press Office, Ukrainian prisoners of war react after prisoner exchange near Sumy, Ukraine, Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2024. Russia and Ukraine on Wednesday exchanged hundreds of prisoners of war in the biggest single release of captives since Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022. (Ukrainian Presidential Press Office via AP) Ukrainian prisoners of war pictured after the prisoner exchange near Sumy, Ukraine, on January 3. Ukrainian Presidential Press Office/AP Soldiers who defended the besieged southern city of Mariupol and its Azovstal steel plant were also exchanged alongside POWs detained in the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, according to the Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, Andriy Yermak. Video released by the Ukrainian Presidency shows the freed Ukrainian prisoners gathered outside coaches. Some of them are draped in Ukraine’s blue and white flag. Posting on Telegram, Yermak called it a “difficult exchange after a long pause.” The last major exchange of prisoners was carried out in August 2023 with Yermak pledging Wednesday to keep working to secure the release of all detained Ukrainians. In return, Russia said 248 Russian servicemen were returned from Ukrainian controlled territory. In a Telegram post, the Russian defense ministry credited the exchange to “the humanitarian intervention” of the United Arab Emirates. The ministry pledged to provide all the “necessary medical and psychological assistance” to the returned servicemen, adding that they will receive treatment at ministry-operated medical facilitates. The UAE’s Ministry of Foreign affairs hailed the successful mediation as a reflection of the friendly relations the UAE maintains with both Russia and Ukraine, according to the WAM Emirates News Agency. The exchange marks a rare moment of cooperation in the war, which is nearing its third year and has recently seen some of the most severe attacks yet launched. In December Russia launched its largest aerial assault on Ukraine since the start of the conflict, killing at least 47 people and injuring over 150 others. Soon after, in one of its single deadliest attacks inside Russian territory, Russia said Ukraine bombarded the border city of Belgorod, killing 24 people, including three children, and injuring 107 others. An old interview with Taylor Swift has some of her fans believing she predicted her relationship with Travis Kelce long ago. In 2009, the superstar singer talked to Glamour magazine and was asked what a relationship would “look like” for her. “It’s always going to be long-distance, even if I date the boy who lives next door to me in Nashville. I’ll be flying to see him and flying him places to see me,” Swift said at the time. “It feels like it would involve more scheduling, and I already deal with a lot of scheduling in my life. Of course, if I met somebody who was worth it, I would probably stop thinking that way!” Kelce definitely fits that bill. She has traveled to watch him play football and he has gone overseas to watch her on her “Eras Tour.” Also, the pair have gone back and forth from his home in Missouri and hers in New York City to spend time together. In the Glamour article 15 years ago, Swift was also asked if she would only “date someone at a similar level of success.” “I think it’s more a question of confidence. I wouldn’t want to be with a pushover who would let me make all the plans and have all the control,” Swift remarked. “It’s really natural for me to go into planning mode, but I’d rather be with someone who has his own voice and passion and ambition.” Plenty of people think that sounds just like Kelce, a tight end for the Kansas City Chiefs who is clearly passionate about football and comfortable enough with fame that he has been very public in his relationship with Swift. It also bears mentioning that Kelce appears to have done a bit of manifesting himself, as he pursued Swift initially by famously using one of the friendship bracelets from her concerts to get her attention. All of which adds up to the belief that Kelce might just be the endgame for Swift. CNN.

THE Sport THE Mirror 5 - 11 January 2024 www.masvingomirror.com masvingo mirror masvingomirror INCREASE GUMBO MIRROR REPORTER CHIREDZI – Premier Soccer League (PSL) debutant Bikita Minerals Football Club (FC) will use Gibbo Stadium as its home ground if renovations at Lithium Stadium are not completed before the 2024/25 league begins. Club chairperson Mike Mushava told The Mirror in an interview that the club’s Lithium Stadium is undergoing renovations to meet Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) standards. "We will use Gibbo Stadium for our first matches if the renovations currently underway are not completed by the time the PSL matches kick-off," said Mushava The development means that supporters may travel to Triangle for the club’s home games. Gibbo Stadium belongs to Triangle FC which was relegated to the Eastern Region Division One league from the PSL last season. Greenfuel once used Gibbo Stadium for its home games after promotion into the PSL last season. Bikita Minerals is the only team from Masvingo Province competing in the PSL. It is the fifth team to do so after Masvingo United FC, FC Victoria, Chiredzi FC and Triangle FC. The Lithium boys are under the guidance of seasoned coach Faustino Mugeji who led them into the PSL.
