From page 1GARIKAI MAFIRAKUREVA HARARE - There are allegations that the 102 top-of -the-range vehicles donated by President Emmerson Mnangagwa to the Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) in September this year are not yet taken.Sources told Masvingo Mirror that the fleet is gathering dust at Msasa Logistics Garrison Depot in Harare with top army officials reluctant to take them for fear that the vehicles could be installed with trackers. There is also fear of compromising a professional army by receiving donations from individuals.“There is hesitancy. There is strong fear that because the vehicles are personal donations and not coming from the fiscus, these could undermine the integrity and independence of the army. ZNA deputy director Public Relations, Lieutenant Colonel Tichafa Mungofa referred all the questions to ZDF spokesperson, Colonel Charles Mutizhe. “I cannot comment on that right now. You can contact my boss Colonel Mutizhe,” he said. Colonel Mutizhe asked for questions to be sent via WhatsApp but he did not respond up to the time of going to Press.. “You can send me all your questions on my WhatsApp and I will respond,” said Mutizhe. The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Defence and War Veterans Affairs, Aaron Nhepera said ZDF was a separate institution that runs its own affairs and acts at its convenient time.“I am not aware that the vehicles were not distributed. As you know ZDF is an independent institution. They do their own things whenever they feel it is suitable for them,” said Nhepera.Speaking during the donation, Mnangagwa said that the vehicles were part of the first phase of a comprehensive programme aimed at enhancing mobility within the Zimbabwe Defence Forces (ZDF). This programme, he noted, would involve the procurement of various vehicles, including buses, to improve the efficiency of the ZDF personnel. He said the initiative would enable the Defence Forces to effectively carry out its Constitutional mandate, including responsibilities such as defending the nation’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, advancing national interests, supporting infrastructure development, and responding to disasters. This impasse is said to automatically stall the other 700 vehicles that were promised by Mnangagwa.President Emmerson Mnangagwa handing over 102 vehicles to military chiefs in Harare in September. Some of the vehicles handed over to the military top brass by President Emmerson Mnangagwa.

In 2023, the school recorded 88% at O level and 80.9% in 2022.The school’s strong academic performance is a result of strict discipline, the introduction of monthly tests for examination classes, morning study sessions from 6 to 7:20 am and extended study from 8:05 to 10:15 pm supervised by the administration, said the head, Jameson Shumbanhete. The school achieved a 100% pass rate in 13 out of 16 subjects in the 2024 A’ level examinations. For the 2024 O’ level results, the subjects that scored 100% were Statistics, Textile Technology and Design, and Physical Education.“We encourage our exam classes to make use of the library for research. The school has also managed to retain its staff, and the rate of teacher transfers is almost zero. We motivate our teachers by giving them results-based awards as soon as results come out in February, and we reward learners on prize-giving days.“We allow learners to choose subjects that suit their abilities and We provide career guidance to help them choose their courses and a major challenge we faced was the curriculum changes which resulted in shortages of resources and affected pass rates,” said Shumbanhete.Rufaro High has an enrolment of 662 students, 300 boys and 362 girls with 64 of them being day scholars. The school also accommodates learners from various orphanages, including Manhinga Orphanage, Chipangali Children’s Home and Alpha Cottage in Masvingo. The school’s O and A level programmes both support and complement Rufaro Vocational Training Centre, creating a mutually beneficial academic environment. Why Rufaro High is first choice for your child!Apostolic Faith Mission In Zimbabwe Rufaro High School SupplementRufaro High Prefects.Rufaro High Librarian Mighty Mutova and Beads Making Class Students.Rufaro High Art Students.

Rufaro is 40 km from Mpandawana Growth point and just 66 km from Masvingo. It is 4 km from Chatsworth Business Center. The area where Rufaro is found used to be a commercial farming area famous for ranching. It is found in a church farm that is 144 hectares in size and of that 18 hectares are arable. The plans by the school head, Jameson Shumbanhete is to use the 18 hectares to make the school sufficient in terms of food by growing crops. In 1972, Rufaro was closed due to the liberation struggle and it reopened in 1987as a secondary school. The facilities were poor and students from many parts of the country enrolled and stayed in shanty accommodation at the school where they cooked for themselves. The rest of the school’s development from humble beginnings are tied to Shumbanhete who applied for its boarding and high school status. Now Rufaro is one of the best schools in Masvingo Province boasting some of the best O and A level results. The Mirror: Ihwai nekuhwikwa Page 1221 - 27 November 2025 www.masvingomirror.comELLEN MLAMBO-MANYENYEREKWACHATSWORTH – Apostolic Faith Mission in Zimbabwe (AFM)-run Rufaro High School near Chatsworth in Gutu is shifting to a new education model that is unique in this country.Starting off as a bush boarding school in 1987, Rufaro is now at an advanced stage in its programme to become a self-sustaining institution. Its O’ and A’ level school feeds and compliments a vocational training centre and vice versa. That model is creating self-sufficiency that is gradually seeing Rufaro producing its own school uniforms and food while constructing its own buildings, servicing its vehicles and producing O level students with Hexco qualifications that bring them directly into the job market.Because of the strides made, Rufaro which is nestled in a 144-hectare AFM farm, looks forward to establishing a university specialising in climate change and environmental protection by 2027. The school’s approach represents an education model that is quite different from the usual. The man behind the phenomenal growth and vision is soft spoken and humble Jameson Shumbanhete, a Hillside Teachers’ College trained educationist.Rufaro was until the turn of the century just an ordinary bush boarding school that no one gave a second look. The school has a strong bias towards production and practical subjects and surprisingly Shumbanhete has no qualifications in these areas at any level.“It’s just a passion and a gift. I have a vision to see this school becoming self-sufficient through what students produce and sell. My drive also seems to come from a bad start where authorities did not believe in my leadership qualities and no one wanted to give me a chance to lead the school. I sometimes think I am driven by this desire to prove everyone wrong,” said Shumbanhete.Shumbanhete who is proud recipient of the 2020 Secretary’s Merit Award, the dream award for any school head has a two-year shortened Secondary School certificate majoring in Geography and History from Hillside Teachers’ College, a B.Ed degree in Policy Making and Administration from ZOU, B. Ed degree majoring in Shona with GZU obtained in 2019 and a Master’s Degree in Curriculum Studies, completed in 2003. He was in and out of Rufaro High since graduating as a teacher and is responsible for almost all the developments that have taken place at Rufaro including the introduction of proper boarding facilities and A level status at the school.Great Zimbabwe University Vice Chancellor, Professor Rungano Zvobgo once remarked that the unmistakable sign of development is infrastructure. Shumbanhete has during his tenure at Rufaro built two modern dormitories, two classroom blocks, a third girls’ dormitory, an Administration block, four teachers’ houses plus the school head’s house. He renovated a science block and brought in modern equipment and renovated the school dining hall.He was the first head in Masvingo to buy a Yutong bus for a school. The school has four vehicles that he bought; a 3 tonne Dyna truck, a 2017 Isuzu which the head uses, a kombi and a Nissan NP300. There are few boarding schools in Masvingo with such a rich array of vehicles. Some of the programmes available at the center are Solarisation, Catering, Woodwork, motor mechanics, welding, cosmetology, Metal Fabrication, Agriculture, Garment Construction, Textile Designing Technology and Building.Shumbanhete was born in Mazuru, a remote area of Gutu in a humble family. He went to Gudza primary School up to grade 6 and did his Grade 7 at Epworth Primary in Harare. He did his secondary at Gutu High from Form 1 while staying with the deputy head Thomas Makanyire. He joined Hillside Teachers College on a two-year shortened Secondary School certificate majoring in Geography and History after which he was deployed at Chiguhune in 1989 where he taught for two years and transferred to Chatikobo High School from 1991-93. He joined Rufaro High on January 1, 1994 as an acting deputy head up to 2000. He was asked by AFM in Zimbabwe to deputise the then head, the late Rev Doctor Musipa. AFM then employed another head, Mr Mawere who was later transferred to Mash West in 2003. Shumbanhete applied for the post of substantive deputy head and was appointed in 2009 and he was deployed at Chibaya in Masvingo district. The church later asked the Ministry for permission to bring him back to Rufaro where he acted as a deputy head up to 2014 when he was appointed substantive head in November 2014.He was then transferred from Rufaro to Guzha Secondary where he worked from 2014 to 2016 when he came back as a substantive head at Rufaro High. Shumbanhete is married to Lyna Mutimuchena and they are blessed with two boys and one girl, namely Tinovimbanashe, Chidochashe and Takunda Comfort. He started his career in 1998 in Mash Central and moved to Masvingo, the first school being Tirizi Secondary in Gutu and then Mpandawana High School before joining Rufaro High in 2010 as an ordinary teacher. In 2016, he deputised the head in an acting capacity. In 2017, he was promoted to be the substantive deputy head.He has contributed to the rise of the school O’ level pass rate from 51.19 % to the current 89.2 % while the A’ level pass rose from 85% to 100%. He teaches Physics at O’ level and his latest pass rates are 98% and 89%. “As a school, we are pride in producing students who excel academically and are disciplined. “Discipline at the school extends to personal responsibilities. The school has zero tolerance to indiscipline. When cases come before the disciplinary committee, we deal with the cases decisively. There is no student who is above the school rules,” said Matongo. Meet Rufaro High Deputy HeadFrom page 1will all be found at the church’s 144-hectare farm in Chatsworth.Rufaro which won the 2020 Secretary’s Merit Award envisages a model of education where the high school, Rufaro Vocational Centre and Rufaro University are not only self-sufficient but complement each other to produce graduates that are relevant to the market.Rufaro High head, Jameson Shumbanhete told Masvingo Mirror in an interview that the vocational centre is up and running and will in January 2026 enrol students in 19 vocational courses including short and diploma courses examined by Hexco.Secondary school students with a strong bias towards practical subjects will have an option to join the vocational college immediately after their O Levels. This year Rufaro High has 44 O’ and A’ Level students who will sit for Hexco examinations.“We want to be a self-sufficient institution producing students ready to join the job market. The Vocational College and the High School will work together and ensure students’ strengths are identified early and they are channelled into the right areas. The University will deal with the issue of today which is climate change,” said Shumbanhete.Rufaro High Textile Design Technology students are producing uniforms for Rufaro high and primary schools and they plan to be doing so for schools in their zone. The school’s fleet of vehicles is maintained by the school of mechanics which is headed by a Class 1 Journeyman. Through its agricultural department, the school produces fish, eggs, chicken, pork, beef and milk for students and for sale to the communities. The catering department produces bread thereby making the school self-sufficient.Some courses that will be on offer at Rufaro Vocational are Agriculture, welding, catering, solarisation, building, metal fabrication and cosmetology.Shumbanhete, the chairperson of the Steering Committee for the establishment of the University said that the University was supposed to open in 2026 but this is now expected to happen in January 2027. He emphasised that the specialisation of the university will be on climate change.Shumbanhete holds several positions in the church. There are 47 students in Form 3, 48 in Form 4, and 6 at A-Level involved in the schools uniform production project. “We are currently producing uniforms for Rufaro High and Primary Schools, and we plan to supply neighbouring schools like Chatsworth Secondary, Chatsworth Primary, and Getnel Primary soon. These schools are close to Rufaro High, which is an advantage to us on transport costs,” said Mudzana. The school’s objective is to equip learners with practical skills that enable them to start their own textile-related businesses after completing O-level or A-level.“I teach learners how to construct a garment. They can sew simple skirts, front-pleated skirts with back zips, and other garments. These are simple items involving fewer processes,” she said. The subject empowers students and particularly those who may not proceed to tertiary education because they can immediately start income-generating projects in the textile industry, she added.Form 3 students, Beverly Mawoneke and Fortune Makuvaza demonstrated the garment-making process and said that they use fabric specifically designed for Rufaro High uniforms.Makuvaza walked the journalists through the steps involved in preparing a blouse. “First, we cut the fabric using a brown knife cutting machine. We arrange pieces in batches to avoid mixing fabric shades. After cutting, we do interfacing using a steam-generating iron, which is ideal for large quantities. Then we begin the production line known as the bench operating system where we prepare the front and back parts, attach the collar, then the sleeves, and finally the pockets.“After production, we overclock using a five-thread sewing machine, trim the garment, do final pressing with the steam-generating iron, and then package the uniform,” explained Makuvaza. The uniforms are priced affordably due to the school’s efficient production system, which uses minimal fabric and power. A skirt costs US$10 and a blouse US$9.Makuvaza said the programme has equipped him with valuable practical skills. “I can now sew my own garments. When my trousers get torn, I repair them myself. Even at home, I can help in the industry. My mother is a sewer, and I am now able to assist her with her work,” he said.O’ level students get into commercial uniform productionApostolic Faith Mission In Zimbabwe Rufaro High School SupplementBerverly Maoneke(Left), Fortune Makuvaza(Right) Textile Technolgy Design Students.

Students run a herbal garden where they grow herbs at the school. What began as a small agricultural project has become a pharmacy, offering safe traditional treatments for minor ailments. The plants are harvested and prepared to help treat common ailments that affect students including colds, stomach aches, and skin irritations. This promotes wellness through nature-based solutions.Agriculture teacher, Gore Manyanga said the garden is managed by learners under the Environmental Management Club. “We grow herbs like lavender which is commonly used for anxiety, alleviating stress and insomnia, chest pains and headache. Worm wood is used to stimulate digestion, alleviate pain and inflammation and treating fungal infections. The roots of wild fig tree (mushavhi) are used to treat sharp abdominal pain on children caused by cramping muscles. The Rosemary herb is used to make tea leaves and it also help on ailments like BP. We also have a herb that people believe enhances luck and boosts confidence,” said Manyanga. Other herbs found in the garden are aloe, mint and lemongrass. Form 3 Agriculture student, Fortunate Mazhindu said herbs in the school garden treat many conditions. Charlotte Hlongwane, another Agriculture student said the project is done by the Agriculture Department together with the Environmental Club.“We have nurses and the general community coming to get the natural herbs from our garden,” said Hlongwane.More than just a health resource, the garden is also an educational tool. Learners receive hands-on lessons on plant science, environmental responsibility, and traditional healing practices. This practical learning experience encourages curiosity and strengthens the connection between classroom knowledge and reallife applications. The impact of the garden extends beyond the school gates. Excess herbs are sold to the surrounding community, providing residents with affordable access to traditional medicinal plants. This small-scale enterprise not only supports local wellness but also generates income that is reinvested into school projects.Teachers, parents, and learners alike have praised the initiative for promoting health, sustainability, and community engagement. As the garden continues to flourish, it stands as a model for how schools can creatively combine education, entrepreneurship, and traditional knowledge to benefit both learners and the wider community.Catching them young on herbal medicines Apostolic Faith Mission In Zimbabwe Rufaro High School SupplementCharlotte Hlongwane (Left), Fortunate Mazhindu (Right) Form 3 Agric Students.

Mudyiwa challenged council’s verdict and appealed to the NEC which concluded that his hearing and dismissal were a nullity. “The charges were not correctly cited, investigations were not carried out, and mitigation submitted by the appellant was ignored. Mudyiwa acted within the scope of his employment. The disciplinary proceedings against him were therefore invalid,” reads part of the NECs ruling dated… and signed by …The NEC found multiple procedural flaws in the disciplinary process. Charges were split into several counts, which the committee said was improper and appeared intended to secure a conviction. No formal investigations were carried out as required by the Labour Code and the Public Procurement and Disposal of Public Assets Act. Evidence suggested that mitigation submitted by Mudyiwa was ignored, despite being a mandatory consideration before imposing disciplinary sanctions. The committee also noted that the charges were incorrectly cited, and that council had at one point conceded that the matter was prescribed. Mudyiwa was fired in March this year after a disciplinary committee found him guilty on three counts of misconduct following his arrest by the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) together with former CEO Emily Chibvongodze. Council had alleged that Mudyiwa failed to submit Leapium Holdings’ relevant documentation, including dealership authority, VAT clearance, and NSSA registration, before awarding the tender. He was also accused of failing to properly advise the CEO on the tender awarding process and of violating the Procurement and Disposal of Public Assets Act by contracting a company that lacked PRAZ registration, VAT clearance, dealership authority, company profile, and NSSA registration. The tender involved a payment of US$131 687 for a grader that was later delivered in a nonfunctional state. Church elder, Vaiangina Sikahema said other schools constructed by the church are Percy Ibboston Primary School (Bulawayo), Caledonia Primary (Goromonzi, Mashonaland East), Kambira Primary (Bindura), Trojan Primary (Bindura), Queen Elizabeth 2 Primary (Bulawayo), Chabwino Secondary (Goromonzi) and Warren Park 1 Primary (Harare). “The church’s role in education in Zimbabwe has a rich history traced back from the colonial era where missionaries played a pivotal role of establishing schools in remote areas. In recent years we have seen the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints contributing immensely to the development of the education in Zimbabwe.“The Latter Day Saints church in 2025 alone has built more than seven state of the art schools, we are commissioning this school which they built this year and tomorrow we will be in Mashonaland East where we are going to commission Runyararo Primary School and there are other schools built in Mashonaland central. We want to appreciate the kind gesture of the church for their overwhelming commitment,” said Moyo.Sikahema told Masvingo Mirror on the sidelines of the commissioning that the church raises money by holding a day of fasting every month when each of its over 17 million members worldwide contribute money that they would have used for food. He added that all that the church requests is for the school to be named after an important figure in the community. “We will continue to do this in Zimbabwe until the Savior returns, we are not leaving, and these schools are for Zimbabwean children. We don’t want credit we don’t want our name to be written here but we want the school to be named after someone significant in the community, it’s not about us but it’s about the communities,” said Sikahema.PETRONILLA MUKAMURI MIRROR REPORTER MASVINGO- A church-classroom block was recently commissioned at Mukosi Primary School in Masvingo rural Ward 21 after it collapsed in 2019. The block was a collaborative effort by the school, Reformed Church in Zimbabwe (RCZ) congregation, former students and the community. The gathering was told that the block was a church building that collapsed. Stakeholders came together to construct it and resolved that it would be used as a classroom during the week since the school has a few classrooms. Pheneas George Mberi (89), one of the senior former pupils was the guest of honour at the commissioning. Mberi said the project fulfilled a wish of the late Jaison Rautsaka Gavhure, to restore the building.“I am delighted to see this church classroom commissioned today. To all who contributed money, building resources, ideas and labour, l salute you,” said Mberi. Dunga who leads an apostolic sect was sentenced by Masvingo Regional Magistrate Innocent Bepura. He was convicted of raping a minor aged 17 and a married woman aged 21. The State led by Liberty Hove argued that the first rape happened in February 2024. Circumstances are that sometime in February 2024, the minor was accompanying her mother who was ill to Gurajena Clinic. They met a member of Dunga’s congregation who invited them to church. The two began con- gregants at the church. Sometime in March last year, Dun- ga arranged for the minor to be a chorister at his church. He went on to attend a choir practice at met the minor at Munyave Bridge. He briefly walked with her and raped her. The minor disclosed the matter to her father sometime in May 2024. On the second count, accused raped a married woman at his church in August 2025. Circumstances are that Dunga welcomed a couple at his shrine and prayed for them. After a while, he invited the couple to another shrine some 50m from his congregation where he asked the husband to go to a nearby river and he raped the wife. The wife screamed and con- gregants could not hear her as they were singing. The Mirror: Ihwai nekuhwikwa Page 3321 - 27 November 2025 www.masvingomirror.comHealth newsA Game-Changer in TB DiagnosticsCATHERINE MUROMBEDZI HEALTH CORRESPONDENT In a powerful demonstration of how innovation can translate into equitable global health impact, Molbio Diagnostics has recently been announced as the winner of the prestigious 2024 Kochon Prize in Manila Phillipines. The award, which recognises outstanding contributions to the fight against tuberculosis (TB), honoured the company's groundbreaking work in expanding access to rapid, decentralised molecular testing for the disease through its revolutionary Truenat platform. The announcement, made during the 39th Stop TB Partnership Board Meeting recently held in Manila, Philippines, underscored the theme of this year's prize: “Innovation and impact in the adoption and roll-out of new tools to end TB.” TRUENAT REVOLUTION:Bringing laboratory quality diagnosis to the frontlines has been at the heart ofMolbio Diagnostics. Selected from over 80 nominations for fundamentally changing the landscape of disease detection, Molbio stood as a game changer. The core of their innovation is the Truenat platform, a molecular testing system that is portable, battery-operated, and solar-rechargeable, capable of delivering lab-quality diagnosis for TB, rifampicin resistance, and over 40 other diseases directly at the peripheral health facility level. This accessibility is critical, as TB disproportionately affects remote and underserved communities who often lack access to sophisticated centralised laboratories. The Truenat system tackles this head-on, ensuring that a rapid, accurate diagnosis is available where the patient is—a crucial step in preventing disease spread and ensuring timely treatment.“The Kochon Prize 2024 proudly honoured those transforming innovation into impact, and Molbio Diagnostics stood out for bringing life-saving technology to people everywhere,” said Mrs. Jae-Jung Chung, Chair of the Kochon Foundation. “Their work truly reflects the spirit of partnership and progress that moves us closer to ending TB.”The impact is immense: over 40 million TB tests have been conducted to date across more than 11,000 Truenat devices worldwide. The platform's credibility soared in 2020 when it became the first WHO-endorsed molecular test for TB and rifampicin resistance deployable at peripheral health facilities. In India, which carries a significant global TB burden, the Truenat platform serves as the backbone of the National TB ELIMINATION Programme, with 7,700 devices having conducted over 30 million tests since 2021. Furthermore, the technology’s global reach has been amplified through initiatives like the Stop TB Partnership’s Introducing New Tools Project (iNTP), which, with support from the US Government, led the largest multi-country roll-out in 2021-2023. This effort successfully introduced the test into nine high-TB burden countries, diagnosing over 41,000 TB cases in its first eighteen months. Now, through partnerships with governments and support from the Global Fund, Truenat is being scaled up in countries like Nigeria, Peru, Kenya, Tanzania, and Bangladesh.Sriram Natarajan, Director & CEO of Molbio Diagnostics, shared the company’s pride in the achievement: “For Molbio this recognition is a dream come true. It underscores our efforts and commitment to the fight against TB and the impact that Truenat, our flag ship innovation, is making.”Molbio showed commitment beyond the prize, a donation to the TB cause became instant. What elevated this news from a professional achievement to an act of profound commitment was the winner's immediate and selfless decision. Molbio Diagnostics announced that it would be donating the entire US$65,000 Kochon Prize money directly to the TB cause. The funds are specifically earmarked to support communities and civil society participation at the 2026 Stop TB Board meeting. This generous donation ensures that the voices of those most affected by TB—the patients, survivors, and advocates from communities on the ground—will be present at the highest level of global TB strategy and governance.Dr. Lucica Ditiu, Executive Director of the Stop TB Partnership, expressed her deep appreciation for this humanitarian gesture. “Molbio has brought rapid molecular diagnostics to the most remote and underserved communities. I am happy that their efforts and empathy for people with TB is recognised. I am also so humbled by their decision to donate the award money towards ensuring that TB communities and people affected by TB from our Board can participate in person to our 2026 meeting. This is great,\" said Dr Lucica. This act beautifully amplifies the true spirit of the Kochon Prize—not just to recognise innovation, but to foster the holistic partnership and progress needed to achieve the goal of ending TB. TECHNOLOGY The Truenat platform is a sophisticated yet user-friendly molecular diagnostic system designed to bring the gold standard of testing—Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR)—out of centralised laboratories and into peripheral, lowresource settings. This portability is key to its success in the TB fight, enabling diagnosis and treatment initiation on the same day.The system operates using two main, compact devices and can provide results in about 60 minutes for TB diagnosis:Sample Preparation (DNA/RNA Extraction):The patient sample (typically sputum) is processed in the Trueprep AUTO v2 device. This device automatically performs the extraction and purification of nucleic acids (DNA/RNA) from the raw sample. This automated step minimizes the need for highly specialised laboratory training and reduces the risk of human error or contamination, making it perfect for non-laboratory settings. This initial stage takes approximately 20 minutes.Molecular Testing (PCR Analysis):The purified nucleic acid is then transferred onto a disease-specific, single-use Truenat micro PCR chip. The chip is inserted into the Truelab Real Time micro PCR Analyser. This device is the engine of the platform, performing the Real-Time PCR to amplify specific target genes of the disease-causing organism, Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The entire detection and amplification process is automated and takes about 35-40 minutes, with the final result displayed clearly and automatically on the analyser's digital interface. RIFAMPICIN RESISTANCE Testing (The MDR-TB advantage):The platform's ability to diagnose drug resistance quickly is a critical feature. If the initial TB test (Truenat MTB or MTB Plus) is positive, a small portion of the already extracted DNA can be immediately loaded onto a Truenat MTB-RIF Dx chip for a reflex test. This follow-on test detects mutations associated with rifampicin (RIF) resistance, a marker for multi-drug-resistant TB (MDR-TB). By providing RIF resistance status in an additional hour, the platform dramatically shortens the time to starting appropriate treatment, which is vital for patient survival and curbing the spread of drug-resistant strains. BEYOND TB: VERSATILITY While the Truenat system has made headlines for its role in tuberculosis eradication efforts, its wide assay menu significantly expands its utility in global health. The same hardware can be used to diagnose a vast array of infectious diseases, enhancing cost-effectiveness and utility for ministries of health in low and middle-income countries (LMICs).The platform’s versatility allows health facilities to use the same equipment for multiple disease testing needs at the point-of-care, including:Vector-Borne Diseases: Rapid detection of Malaria (P. falciparum/P. vivax), Dengue, and Chikungunya.Viral Infections: Diagnosis for Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV-1/HIV-2), Hepatitis B and C (HBV/HCV), and other critical viral loads.Outbreak Readiness: Quick and accurate testing for diseases like COVID-19 (SARSCoV-2), Nipah, and other emerging pathogens. This ability to adapt to various public health crises solidifies Truenat's role not just as a tool for TB, but as a robust and essential diagnostic pillar for frontline healthcare globally. LEGACY OF GIVING BACK Molbio Diagnostics’ decision to donate the $65,000 award is a profound statement about the company’s values, placing people and partnerships above profit and accolades. By dedicating the funds to support community and civil society participation at the 2026 Stop TB Board meeting, Molbio is actively strengthening the governance of the Stop TB Partnership. It acknowledges that effective, lasting solutions to complex health challenges like TB cannot be crafted without the direct, in-person input of those most impacted—the communities and patients who live with the disease every day. This act ensures that the strategic decisions made in Geneva or Manila are grounded in the realities faced by people in the world's most remote villages. The joint victory—the recognition of a life-saving tool and the selfless donation of its associated prize—marks a powerful moment in the global movement to end TB, setting a new standard for innovation coupled with empathy.I can provide the specific WHO recommendation details for using Truenat in TB diagnosis or find more information on the history of the Kochon Prize.Feedback: [email protected] Molbio Diagnostics Wins Kochon Prize and Gives BackFrom left: Chong Kun Dang Kochon Foundation Chairman, Mrs Jae-Jung Chung, handing over the 18th Kochon Prize to Mr. Sriram Natarajan, CEO, Molbio Diagnostics, a molecular diagnostics company based in India.
The Mirror: Ihwai nekuhwikwa Health news Page 3421 - 27 November 2025 www.masvingomirror.com Article credit: *STAT An adapted work of Tatenda Makoni“I didn’t yet know what AIDS was. I only knew that something unspoken hung between us. My parents both died before they turned 40, their lives shortened by a virus shadowed by reticence and shame.” We all know someone whose life was touched—or tragically lost—because of HIV. Many of our relatives, friends, neighbours, carry hopes and questions: Will this prevention ever reach me?Now, even with a “game-changer” drug like lenacapavir showing nearly 100 % efficacy in trials, the author reminds us: “Promising the medication isn’t enough.” Access matters. Urgent action matters. Delay means lives lost. As a medical student who grew up in Zimbabwe, I know that access requires much more than pharmaceutical company promises.Manufacturing must ensure fair pricing with the governments closest to the need.Across Southern Africa—in Harare, KwaZulu-Natal, Blantyre, and Gaborone—I have sat in clinics where the weight of the HIV epidemic is still acutely felt. The fluorescent lighting often illuminates lines of young women waiting for hours, their hope measured in the slow movement of the queue. Yet, many leave with the devastating uncertainty of whether prevention will ever truly come. This wait is not just about time; it is a profound failure of the global health system. In these spaces, I hear the same searing question that defines the chasm between scientific progress and human experience: Why are life-saving medicines tested here in our communities, but never seem to reach the local shelves? This question cuts to the core of ethical global health practice. Our communities in the Global South are often the indispensable testing grounds for novel pharmaceuticals, yet we consistently face a prohibitive barrier of access once the drugs are proven effective and safe. My work in Botswana, in particular, exposed me to the reality of research infrastructure that is robust enough to deliver clinical trial data for global pharmaceutical giants, but tragically disconnected from the public health mechanisms required to deliver the final product to those who generated the evidence. The process feels less like a partnership and more like a necessary extraction, one that perpetuates a long-standing pattern of uneven rollouts and profound mistrust.Conversations about HIV prevention often collapse back onto adolescent girls and young women, the group who remain at highest risk. Their vulnerability is not purely biological; it is compounded by systemic social and economic factors—poverty, gender-based violence, lack of agency, and educational disparity. When they hear about new medi- cal breakthroughs, the response is rarely uniform. Some voice a cautious hope, a belief that perhaps this time will be different. But for many, the skepticism is deep and immediate: a bitter doubt that the drugs will ever trickle down to the rural or peri-urban clinics they depend on. Every exchange carries the old wounds of broken promises and delayed equity, a profound weariness rooted in the sense that progress in our fight against HIV always seems to come with frustrating conditions and delays. Carrying the Loss, Fueling the FightFor me, that weariness is personal. It is inherited. I am the son of parents I lost to the disease before the age of 40, their lives cut short by an epidemic that should have been controlled years earlier. My earliest memories are threaded with the fight for basic antiretroviral access, a battle won by activists two decades ago, yet whose lessons on global pharmaceutical responsibility appear to be forgotten with every new innovation. As a future infectious diseases doctor, I carry their loss and the burden of those waiting rooms into my training. My commitment is to continue the work they—and so many others—never saw truly begin. This pivotal moment, marked by new, highly effective preventive drugs, belongs first and foremost to the patients, the families, the frontline healthcare workers, and all those who have borne the disproportionate weight of this global health crisis. Their suffering and their participation advanced the science. The power, however, now rests in the hands of the drug manufacturer, Gilead. As patent holdet. Gilead holds the exclusive power to ensure this breakthrough is made truly accessible to all who advanced the science and those who now live with its scars. True accessibility is not a philanthropic gesture; it is an ethical obligation. It means more than occasional, limited donations. It means immediate and non-restrictive licensing to allow generic manufacturing across the developing world, particularly through established partners like the Medicines Patent Pool (MPP). It means ensuring equitable pricing that allows the governments closest to the need—from Zimbabwe to South Africa—to procure these preventive tools at sustainable costs. We cannot afford to repeat the tragedy of the ARV rollout, where millions died waiting for affordable generics. The delay in access to the newest generation of HIV prevention is a moral failing that disproportionately punishes the most vulnerable. For the women in the clinics of Blantyre and Gaborone, for the memories of my parents, and for the promise of an HIV-free generation, the pharmaceutical industry must choose global health equity over maximal profit. It is time for their power to be matched by their responsibility.• *A Zimbabwean-born medical student at the Medical College of Wisconsin whose work bridges global health and HIV research.
