Gokwe lead master planner, Tatenda Chiteka called on the local authority to immediately phase out Blair toilets and implement stricter waste management practices in the town. Even in those areas where residents are using sewer system, it’s blocked most of the time, said Chiteka. The sewer system is also failing due to age, design flaws and inadequate maintenance. He said Gokwe Town which obtained its town status in 2006 relies on underground water as its main source of the precious liquid. This setup compromises health as water sources are contaminated by the Blair toilets. Contamination is exacerbated by the use of Blair toilets in sandy soils, said Chiteka. Gokwe which grew on the backbone of rich cotton farming in the last few decades has a population of 33 075. Chiteka said that the sewer network which is also substandard does not cover the entire town as it leaves whole suburbs unconnected and they include Sasame 1, Sasame 2, Kambasha, most of Mapfungautsi and Njelele. The Central Business District, some parts of Mapfungautsi Old, and the industrial areas are serviced by sewer ponds. An expert on underground water Precise Panashe Ncube of Green Hut Trust said Blair toilets should be sited at least 30 metres from a water source. “Gokwe sewer infrastructure needs to be attend to as this is a big challenge to the standard of living and the health of residents. “The limited sewer system has seen 75% of the city resorting to Blair toilets and this is a major health concern for an urban area designated as a town. “The sewer infrastructure status for Gokwe town can be labelled as not up to standard. “Nyaradza, a medium-density suburb connected to the sewer network, is currently blocked, rendering the system ineffective and the rest of the town relies on septic tanks and Blair toilets,” said Chiteka. “Immediate action is needed to address these challenges. It is crucial to expand and redesign the existing sewer network, upgrade infrastructure, and implement stricter waste management practices,” he added. Mnangagwa’s Vision 2030, a ruse – appellant tells High Court Judge From page 1 Charles Ndlovu appealed to the Judge to show pity towards the elderly appellants and give them more time to find places to go. They are old and they need more time to move, said Ndlovu. The villagers’ appealed for a High Court order to compel Government to find them an alternative place to go before they are evicted. They also wanted to be given five years to harvest their crop and to prepare to leave. Justice Mawadze dismissed the order sought by the 21 families but granted them six months to harvest and leave. He said the courts had no legal basis to order the Minister of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Resettlement Dr Anxious Masuka to allocate them alternative land. As he pronounced his ruling, the villagers started murmuring and asking the Judge where he thought they were going to go. One of them openly told the Judge that he did not agree with the ruling and that Mnangagwa’s Vision 2030 was a ruse. “There is no legal basis for this court to grant that order. Generally courts don’t direct ministers on how to operate. This court is simply ceased with the criminal aspect of your conviction. We can’t condone an illegality,” said Justice Mawadze. Justice Mawadze heard the appeal with Justice Sunsley Zisengwe. “I asked whether you understood the judgment and not if you agree with it. This court’s role is to issue out judgments regardless of whether you like them or they make you happy,” said Justice Mawadze. President Mnangagwa. This is despite that Government policy is to bridge the digital divide and ensure that all people are connected to internet. The report is part of the concerns raised by Chiredzi RDC Masterplan team led by Aaron Mabaso. He said that there are areas in Chiredzi that completely don’t have network connectivity hence residents rely on South African mobile companies across Limpopo River. “One of our findings in infrastructure is that there is insufficient provision of infrastructure to the extent that there are areas which don’t have access to mobile networks, “said Mabaso. The affected wards are 1, 2, 3, 12, 15, 24 and 26. Chief Sengwe whose area of jurisdiction is mostly affected once told The Mirror that he misses a lot of meetings because messages sent on WhatsApp don’t get to him. “My area is affected by lack of mobile networks, I have missed many meetings because of lack of network in my area,“ said Chief Sengwe. Osteogenesis impefecta is an inherited bone disorder that is present at birth. The 16 year old Shoko who is doing Form 4 at Chiredzi Government High School has been living with the condition since birth. The condition has been causing problems like back pain and internal pain due to the lack of an artificial leg. The prosthetic leg will prevent her from suffering from back pain which she normally suffered due to walking while bending while improving her speed and endurance. Speaking during the function at a local lodge, Health Promotion Clinic Trust medical rehabilitation practitioner, Bigboy Madzivanzira who is also a member of Lions Club (Harare City) said his organization identified Shoko and decided to assist her. “Lions Club Chiredzi funded all the expenses and facilitation and I repaired her prosthetic limb. She had a limb which she had acquired in 2023 from a different organisation and it broke when she fell last year so I had to repair the limb,” said Madzivanzira. Chiredzi Government High School head, Victor Zvada commented the Lions Club and said Shoko is a bright girl however her studies were being affected by her condition but now that she has an artificial limb, she can perform better. INCREASE GUMBO MIRROR REPORTER CHIREDZI – Chiredzi South MP, Joel Sithole appeared lost in his own constituency when he visited Malipati for an irrigation project groundbreaking ceremony organized by Sustainable Agriculture Technology (SAT) last week. Villagers seemed not to recognize or acknowledge him when he stood up to deliver a speech. It is the tradition in Zanu PF that when an MP stands up to give a speech, people ululate and clap hands as a way of respect. The villagers showed no interest in his speech up to the end and he then seemed lost and started telling the villagers that he was an important man because he and the councillor were the eyes of President Mnangagwa. “Vanamai ko pururudzaika (Please ladies ululate for me),”Sithole pleaded with women at the event. Asked why villagers seemed not to be interested in their own MP, one of the villagers said Sithole is always absent. Efforts to get a comment from Sithole were futile as his mobile could not be reached for a comment. Another villager said most people in the constituency still prefer former MP retired Brigadier General Calisto Gwanetsa. INCREASE GUMBO MIRROR REPORTER CHIREDZI – More than 2 060 girls dropped out of school in Chiredzi in 2023, a masterplan research commissioned by Chiredzi Rural District has established. The report attributed the dropouts to long distances of up to 20km that pupils particularly in secondary walk to the nearest school and called for the construction of more places of learning. The report also said that there were 1 860 boys who dropped out of school during the same period. The masterplan work is now 60% complete. Chiredzi lead master planner, Aaron Mabaso confirmed the statistics to The Mirror. “One key example is ward 13 where pupils walk 20km to the nearest secondary school. Pupils from areas like Masukwe and Pahlela attend school at Alpha Mpapa in Chikombedzi and Malipati High, some 20km away,” said Mabaso. The long distances have forced pupils to rent accommodation in villages near the school where they stay without parental guidance. He said that such environments are particularly negative to girls. He also said that this distance also affect quality of learning and hence lead to school drop outs. Chiredzi district have a total of 148 primary schools (93 registered and 55 satellite, 48 secondary schools(28 registered and 20 satellite schools) and only one boarding school, Malipati. 2 060 girls drop out of school in Chiredzi – masterplan findings Hippo Valley holds career guidance Aleta Makomeke. The Mirror: Ihwai nekuhwikwa Page 6 07 - 13 June 2024 www.masvingomirror.com Dear my Sisters and Brothers in the Opposition Movement Nkosilathi Emmanuel Moyo,Sr Revolutionary salutations to all the Comrades and patriots who love our great country Zimbabwe. I am writing to all political activists, pro-democracy campaigners and leaders of the opposition movement. Comrades when are we going to realize that we all need each other in this struggle? When are we going to put aside our egos and put Zimbabwe first? When are we going to provide the much needed thought leadership in the trenches and do away with this hero worshipping and praise singing? When are we going to change this ´see no evil-hear no evil´ attitude and be honest to the masses of our people? When are we going to see the critical need of building a mass oriented, grassroots and organic movement which brings all actors and players on the table for the common goal of removing the evil ZANU PF regime? When are we going to repent from this sin of monopolizing the struggle and chasing away Comrades who have different ideas? When are we going to respect the fundamentals of internal democracy and the right to freedom of expression in the movement? My worst fear is if we don´t do a thorough introspection, self-examination and have an honest discussion about where we are heading to as a movement, we are likely to be the next ZANU PF if we get in power, ‘not organized like this´. My heart bleeds if I look at the faith and the hope the masses of our people have in us as their leadership, let us not disappoint them. For the past few months I have been talking to Comrades from different opposition outfits, civil society and the people in the trenches. The sad thing I picked is our struggle is too polarized. We all don’t want ZANU PF but what is dividing us are the egos of our leaders. They are more worried about building big names for themselves not saving the bleeding homeland. Dambudziko tirikuita Chimurenga chekugadzira mazita kwete chekusunungura vanhu. To add insult to injury some of the Comrades who are now outcasts, wallowing in the dustbins of history are not sellouts at all as they are labelled. But they tried to bring different ideas to the table and that was their sin. If we are to get in power with such intolerance aren’t we going to be another ZANU PF? I was lambasted in a certain WhatsApp group by my Comrades after suggesting that we need people like Professor Arthur Mutambara to help us build a think tank that helps us to guide the struggle in terms of ideology and policy formulation. They thought I was bidding for AGO to be President and I was lambasted left, right and center. My suggestion was misinterpreted, besides Comrades are we that mean? We need a strong mass oriented organic movement which brings all actors from academics to community organizers together. Academics helping as the Think Tank and community organizers implementing on the ground. A strong think tank backed by a mass oriented movement is critically needed otherwise the fire of the people’s revolution is slowly dying while we are busy majoring in the minor. In conclusion I know the question in the trenches right now is What is to be done? But I would suggest that before we attempt to answer that we must first ask ourselves, Where did we go wrong? An honest conversation (post mortem) acknowledging our past mistakes and where we did it wrong in our previous political programs of action will help us to have a formidable new start. Let’s forgive each other, bring everyone on the table and unite. We have a nation to build. May God Save the Republic of Zimbabwe Nkosilathi Emmanuel Moyo, Sr is a political activist based in Berlin, Germany. He writes in his personal capacity and is reachable on his WhatsApp +4917637926572 Letters from Berlin Urban and rural councils, please deliver Most high density suburb streets in Zimbabwe’s cities, towns and growth points are in a bad shape. What we are seeing are potholes and small gullies that make driving and even walking a nightmare. Streets that were once tarred are now covered by soil and gravel. However little is being done to rectify the matter although all this is happening under the watch of rural and urban councils that are run by highly qualified personnel. In an effort to be seen to be doing something Masvingo City Council recently dumped heaps of gravel on streets that need urgent repair. Residents were relieved when they saw trucks offloading gravel on their streets. However many weeks down the line no graders came to level the gravel leaving residents stranded as their streets were now impassable and no one could drive through. Residents who had their vehicles at home when the gravel was offloaded could not drive their vehicles out of their yards and those who were away at that time could not drive into their yards. Some were forced to use their shovels to make the streets passable by car. It was only after The Mirror newspaper had raised the issue that we are now seeing the Municipality running around to level the heaps of gravel it had left lying on the streets for weeks with the job being done haphazardly, more so as the gravel that is being used has huge stones that are pushed to the sides of the streets and left there. This definitely is the kind of poor planning that keeps us at the level of underdevelopment. What is the use of inconveniencing motorists by blocking their passage with huge piles of gravel when graders are not available for leveling? Who is going to benefit from this kind of procrastination? In Gutu District motorists had for years on end to bear the avoidable burden of avoiding heaps of gravel on the road linking Mupandawana with Buhera. This situation was saved by the advent of the past independence celebrations that took place at Murambinda when that road was graded in two days. Much as efforts to repair roads are commendable there is need for proper implementation of what needs to be done. We will not get anywhere with development when city and rural councils have to be pushed by the media or other stakeholders to do their work.

Garwe who spoke in an exclusive interview with The Mirror, assured farmers that most of the challenges that they faced last year have been addressed and smooth deliveries of sugarcane area expected. “Farmers should look forward to an exciting season following extensive works at the mills to improve reliability of our milling plants,” said Garwe. The 2024/2025 sugarcane harvesting period started on April 23, 2024. Last season small scale sugarcane farmers faced a myriad of challenges, including long queues at the mills caused by mill breakdown. There was also a mismatch between the delivered sugarcane and what the mills could take. This time there will be controlled harvest. “It is also expected that ongoing efforts to have controlled harvest which matches milling rate will result in fresh cane being delivered to the mills,” said Garwe. She said the mismatch between harvesting and milling rate can also be improved through communication and adherence to quotas to avoid over cutting. “Queuing at the mills is largely a function of mismatch between harvesting and milling rate,” said Garwe. This season THZ is expecting to crush 3 335 595 tonnes of sugarcane compared to last season when they crushed 3 165 058 tonnes. An average of 8500 to 9600 tonnes will be crushed per day. “Daily crush will be varying in line with limitation brought about by cane quality parameters but our thrust this season will be maximising crushing rate to shorten the season and our average daily crush ranges from 8 500 to 9 600 tonnes of sugarcane per day,” said Garwe. Meanwhile THZ has also incorporated the use of CC cameras at the mill weighbridge in order to monitor the transportation of the cane into the mills. Smooth deliveries expected as major maintenance is completed on Tongaat mills Darlia Garwe.

The Mirror: Ihwai nekuhwikwa Page12 07 - 13 June 2024 www.masvingomirror.com Health News CATHERINE MUROMBEDZI HEALTH CORRESPONDENT Stigma remains a barrier to seeking tuberculosis treatment for some. Dr. KK Chopra, a former director of the New Delhi Tuberculosis Center, India State TB Training and Demonstration Center, recently emphasized the importance of accelerating active case finding (ACF) to end TB. Speaking at a TB stakeholders' meeting in Goa, Dr. Chopra stressed the need for systematic identification of people with presumptive active TB, using rapid tests, examinations, or other procedures. Truenat a chip-based, point-of-care, and rapid molecular test for diagnosis of infectious diseases like tuberculosis (TB) and COVID-19, developed and manufactured by Molbio Diagnostics, was endorsed by the World Health Organization (WHO) or initial diagnostic tests for pulmonary tuberculosis and rifampicin resistance TB in January 2020. Truenat is portable and battery operated, bringing diagnostics to the community. The test results are available in about 1 hour, making it a rapid and accurate tool for TB diagnosis. Dr Chopra spoke of the risk groups and the steps to be taken. He highlighted the risk areas and what is required to mitigate the spread of TB. "People living under the same roof with a TB patient are exposed. A patient is infectious before commencing treatment," said Dr Chopra. When one is diagnosed with TB and is placed on treatment and with the treatment working well, one is no longer infectious. However, household contacts and close contacts of active TB patients are required to be screened for TB. "People living with HIV and not virally suppressed have a weak immune system, they to need to be screened at each health facility visit when they go for drug resupply. "Miners and current and former workers in workplaces with silica exposure have a high risk of developing tuberculosis," said Dr Chopra. He stated that epidemiology surveillance is important as risk can be to groups. "Screening in other selected risk groups can be considered after a careful assessment of epidemiological relevance, health system preparedness, and risks and benefits for the individuals in the affected areas," he said. He also called for ACF for people living under difficult conditions. "People living in slums, prison inmates, old aged homes are compromised and are at high risk of TB infection. The elderly by nature, have weaker immune systems, making them prone to infections too. Construction site workers, refugee camps, night shelters, the homeless, orphanages, homes for the destitute, and asylum camps are all at high risk of contracting TB," said Dr Chopra. An area known to house sex workers in India was noted to have a high incidence of TB. "GB Road has 32 brothels, 2500 regular sex workers, and 96 work rooms. In a mobile screening program taken in Delhi, from 23 December 2021 to 19 September 2022, a total of 3924 and 2154 were screened. The total symptomatic was 465. A total of 2154 had an X-ray done. The total number diagnosed with TB was 175, with 81 clinically diagnosed and diagnosed 94 microbiologically diagnosed," said Dr. Chopra. The figures show the need to bring health services to a vulnerable community. The key population covered were female sex workers operating along the GB Road area. Stakeholder involvement is important, and good relationships with community based organizations have seen success in most health programs taken to the people. It is easier for the community to welcome people they are already familiar with them. Accelerating Active Case Finding of TB Patients in India To page 13

They were taught how to initiate patients on treatment. Staff from NGO as well as outreach workers, including peers working in GB Road areas were trained to identify chest symptomatic. "If a person was found with TB symptoms, the outreach worker noted the details, and one sputum sample was collected. "Before screening, educative and informative activities were conducted in the area. The team had to ensure that sputum sample was collected. If sputum tested positive, the patient had an X-ray taken if positive treatment was commenced without wasting time," added Dr. Chopra. Overall, 6% TB cases were found among those screened. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends the following thresholds for TB testing for coughing patients: • 5% or more of patients with cough of any duration: TB prevalence is considered high • 2-4%: TB prevalence is considered moderate • Less than 2%: TB prevalence is considered low • For non-coughing patients (e.g., household contacts, HIV+ individuals): • 2% or more: TB prevalence is considered high • 1-1.9%: TB prevalence is considered moderate • Less than 1%: TB prevalence is considered low With 6% of tested people being diagnosed with TB shows that the population has a high burden of TB. Meanwhile, back home in Zimbabwe, community health workers are the eyes and ears in the public health response nationally. Itai Rusike, the Executive Director, Community Working Group on Health (CWGH), a community based organisation that directly works in primary health focusing on prevention said if we talk of treatment, we would have missed the prevention pillar. "Village Health Workers (VHWs) can be the glue that connects our healthcare system to communities. They are critical to health promotion, disease prevention, early diagnosis and referral, and helping people to stay on treatment and stay healthy. "For VHWs to be effective, they should be empowered through trainings. They must be treated with respect and this requires political commitment to support them with incentives such as bicycles, uniforms, consumables and allowances from the national budget in order to enhance their work and motivate them instead of the current situation where they rely on external partners for support. "Since VHWs live in the same community they serve, they experience the same social, economic and environmental living conditions and they are always the first to know if there's any disease outbreak in their community as they have direct interface with the people. "We need a more transparent recruitment process that ensures that VHWs come from the area they live in. Ideally, members of the community should be part of the selection process. As VHWs retire, die, or leave for other reasons, new CHWs should be recruited promptly," said Rusike. Rusike called on these cogs in the health delivery wheel to be employed by the parent ministry. "All VHWs must be employed by the Ministry of Health and Child Care. Their allowances and training must be standardised and paid by the government, with donors coming in to complement the government efforts. At the moment, there is no standardization of payment of allowances as some VHWs are paid by the Global Fund whilst others are paid by the Health Development Fund causing a lot of tension amongst the VHWs as some are paid their allowances on time with others not being paid on time. "The present ratio of VHWs per population needs to be increased as there are approximately 14 000 VHWs in the country out of a national need of about 30 000, straining the ones at work," urged Rusike. "VHWs also need protective gear for the weather and protective equipment (PPE) against diseases such as TB and Covid-19. "VHWs needs the support of intersectoral body, which includes various community structures, as such health outcomes depend on other sectors and community participation. When we talk of treatment of diseases that can be prevented, it means our prevention needs strengtheing," said Itai Rusike, Executive Director, Community Working Group on Health (CWGH). Primary health care is centered on prevention, a dignified allowance ought to be given. • Feedback: cathymwauyakufa@ gmail.com Accelerating Active Case Finding of TB Patients in India

The Mirror: Ihwai nekuhwikwa Health news Page14 07 - 13 June 2024 www.masvingomirror.com CATHERINE MUROMBEDZI HEALTH CORRESPONDENT Food insecurity among Zimbabwean children could further deteriorate in 2024 with the El Nino induced drought. This calls for a stakeholders’ united force to mitigate the severity of the drought, which threatens hard hit areas. Children suffer the brunt of poverty. With 580,000 young children in Zimbabwe living in severe food poverty, community initiatives are urged to assist in the provision of food. UNICEF calls on activities to improve children’s diet diversity and prevent malnutrition. The need to scale up funding grows. Globally, around 181 million children under 5 years of age are in dire need of food assistance. This translates to one in four children experiencing severe child food poverty. UNICEF peals for US$84.9 million to mitigate against the El Nino induced drought in Zimbabwe. With 50 percent more likely to experience wasting, malnutrition becomes a condition posing risk to the affected children. Among these, 580,000 are Zimbabwean children, a number that could rise with the current El Nino induced drought. Well-fed children from early childhood have better outcomes, as compared to children who face stagnant growth. Thousands of children aged between six months and two years do not have access to the minimum nutritious foods in the development stages. The long-term impacts of COVID-19 on child diet quality are still being felt. Compounded with multiple health outbreaks, including cholera, measles, flu, the impacts of the climate crisis, and rising food prices pose a threat to marginalised children from poor families. These factors are all driving child food poverty in Zimbabwe, leading to prostitution of children as young as 12 in some areas, both urban and rural. “Food insecurity among Zimbabwean children could further deteriorate in 2024 with the El Nino induced drought that has caused above-average temperatures and below average rainfall, with a ‘historic’ mid-season dry spell over the 2023/2024 agricultural season,” said Dr Nicholas Alipui, UNICEF Representative in Zimbabwe. “It is urgent to address child food poverty today to avoid more children being pushed into a life-threatening status of severe malnutrition.” According to the global UNICEF report, children who consume two or fewer of the eight defined food groups are considered to be in severe child food poverty. Children who consume three or four food groups per day are experiencing moderate food poverty, while children who are fed five or more of the eight defined food groups are not considered to be in food poverty. In Zimbabwe, less than one in ten children consume a daily diet containing five or more food groups, with the frequency required to ensure optimal growth and development. The UNICEF report highlights a concerning link – that children living in severe food poverty are up to 50 percent more likely to suffer from life-threatening malnutrition. In-line with Zimbabwe’s Nutrition Narrative, the Government of Zimbabwe with UNICEF and other partners, is implementing activities, under the MultiSectorial Food and Nutrition Security Strategy, to improve children’s diet diversity and prevent all forms of malnutrition. These activities focus on making nutrient-dense foods more available and accessible at household level through a network of community-based support programmes to caregivers known as Care Groups, with links to relevant services in health, water, sanitation and hygiene, social protection, and agriculture. Dr Alipui: “To scale up community-based nutrition activities, additional support is needed from government, development and humanitarian partners, national and international civil society and non-governmental organizations, and the private sector.” Community-based nutrition programs addressing child food poverty among the children of Zimbabwe are essential to deliver nutritious, safe, and affordable foods and essential nutrition services for children throughout the country. Meanwhile, the Zimbabwe Vulnerability Assessment Committee (ZimVAC) reported in 2023 that more households were food insecure. These households continued to rely on casual labor, locally known as maricho (40%] as the most important source of income, followed by food crop production/sales (25%), vegetable production and sales (22%), remittances within Zimbabwe (21%) and petty trade (14%) With marginalised households living on a dollar a day, casual work, also depending on rainfall, the sector is constrained. With maricho, one is paid immediately after work, making the food consumption pattern immediate. This is the sector most hardly hit by poor rainfalls. Families living in the Lowveld rely on small grains production, animal husbandry, and mostly goats. Seasonal work from sugar plantations supplements income for most households. Irrigation for small-scale sugar cane plantations holders is giving better outcomes with diverse income sources. In Mudzi, communal farmers meet most of their food needs through own crop production. Poor households rely on gold panning, petty trade, and maricho. For Gokwe north and south, 240,506 families are centered primarily on growing maize for food and cotton for cash. Animal husbandry (namely cattle, goats, and poultry) is for affording families. Poor farmers grow mainly cotton for resell and cereals for family consumption. Poor families usually have donkeys for draught power. They generate income through casual labor, or through smallscale gold panning, A total of 139,732 families were assessed from Hurungwe, Kariba, and Binga districts. Livelihoods centered on production of maize for household consumption and tobacco for some Hurungwe families. For the poor households, beer brewing for community consumption brings cash. The Midlands Province sees gold panning being a livelihood. However, high migration in search of gold carries a risk, being away from families, sexually transmitted infections, and fights for mining claims. Despite the good prices fetched from gold, this is an area of chronic poverty and food insecurity. For districts with mixed farming like Mashonaland East, Manicaland, poverty levels are not as severe as the dry regions as market gardening brings ready cash at short intervals. The Zunde RaMambo concept, a time immemorial food security initiative, is currently under threats in many districts as the drought resulted in little or no harvests. The Zunde RaMambo is a traditional Zimbabwean concept that emphasizes community support and social responsibility. It involves individuals bringing a portion of their harvest or working in the chief's field to support vulnerable members of the community, such as: the aged, the sick, orphans, and disabled individuals. This practice ensures that those who are unable to care for themselves are provided for, promoting social cohesion, solidarity, and collective well-being. Zunde RaMambo is a remarkable example of indigenous knowledge and community-led initiatives that foster food security, social protection, and inclusivity. The Mirror: Ihwai nekuhwikwa Page 18 07 - 13 June 2024 www.masvingomirror.com International News South Africa's ANC meets to decide on preferred partners to govern JOHANNESBURG, June 6 (Reuters) - African National Congress leaders held talks on Thursday to try to agree on potential partners to form a new South African government after the party lost its parliamentary majority for the first time in the democratic era. The former liberation movement has run South Africa since it swept to power with Nelson Mandela at the helm in the 1994 election that marked the end of apartheid, but was punished for its chequered record in last week's election. While still the largest party, the ANC can no longer govern alone and signalled on Wednesday it would seek to form a government of national unity with a wide range of parties. "This is a time for sober minds," said ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula as members of the party's National Executive Committee (NEC) gathered in Johannesburg for a day of talks. "We're not dealing with the discussions from a point of view of locking ourselves into one option. We're looking at all options," he told reporters. Advertisement · Scroll to continue Mbalula said President Cyril Ramaphosa would disclose what the NEC had decided in a closing address. South Africa has been struggling with sluggish economic growth, high levels of poverty and unemployment, a persistent racial wealth divide, severe power shortages and political corruption. The electoral maths has created a complex situation for the ANC, which will have 159 of the 400 seats in the new National Assembly. The second largest party, for example, has said it won't work with some of the smaller ones. \Its nearest rivals are the pro-business, white-led Democratic Alliance (DA), with 87 seats, the populist uMkhonto we Sizwe (MK) led by former president Jacob Zuma, with 58, and the hard-left Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) with 39. The new parliament has to convene within two weeks of results being declared and one of its first acts must be to elect the president. The constitutional deadline, which will fall on or near June 16, is putting pressure on the ANC and others to reach agreement quickly. Options could include a coalition government, a minority ANC government with backing on key votes from other parties in exchange for policy concessions, or a government of national unity. ANC'S DIFFICULT SEARCH FOR PARTNERS "We have engaged with everybody and we are talking to even smaller parties. We want to bring everyone on board," said Mbalula. The DA, for its part, signalled on Wednesday that it did not want to join a government that also included MK or the EFF. Any deal with the DA would be welcomed by financial markets but unpopular with many ANC supporters who regard it as a champion of what some South Africans call "white monopoly capital". A group of anti-DA protesters stood outside the hotel where the NEC meeting was taking place, holding placards reading "The DA wants to destroy the ANC" and "Not in our names". On the other hand, a deal with the EFF or MK, which advocate nationalising mines and seizing land without compensation, would be more popular with some in the ANC base but rattle investors. Both the EFF and MK are led by former ANC figures who broke away and are at odds with the current leadership. Zuma in particular openly loathes Ramaphosa, and his party said after the election that it would not work with "the ANC of Ramaphosa". The ANC said on Wednesday it would not talk to anyone who demanded Ramaphosa's resignation as a condition of joining an alliance. On Thursday, Mbalula added: "It's been very difficult to engage with MK. It depends after this meeting if we will still meet with them." Zuma was forced to quit as president in 2018 after a series of corruption scandals, and was jailed for contempt of court after refusing to participate in an inquiry into corruption. He remains well liked in his home province, populous KwaZulu-Natal, where extra police have been deployed this week to maintain public order. The province was the scene of deadly riots in 2021 when Zuma was sentenced. https://www.reuters.com

Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) closed its base at Nharira Business Center midMay and the nearest Police outpost is now Chivhu Police Station some 30km away. The post covered farming communities as Banza, Bvumbura, Mudavanhu, and Lancashire which have been hit hard by stock theft cases since the closure. Mashonaland East Police spokesperson Inspector Simon Chazovachiyi said they had no option except to pullout because the premises were no longer conducive for operations. “The withdrawal of Police from Nharira was that the environment was no longer conducive since we were now sharing the same premises with Nharira-Lancashire Dairy Co-operative employees. The area was no longer secure for our officers,” he said. Nharira Police base was established over 20 years ago and was manned by officers from Chivhu Police Station on a rotation basis. Nharira-Lancashire Dairy Co-operative owns the premises and some of its employees are now staying at the premises. Police was left with a single room that is affected by high traffic of employees. Efforts to get a comment from the dairy were futile. Villagers who spoke to The Mirror expressed concern at the closure and called for the reinstatement of the base. They argued that lawlessness is increasing since the base was closed. Nharira Business Community member and Gwangu lodges manager, Daniel Chidembo said there is need for the Police post to be re-opened. “It’s a shock that Nharira no longer has a Police outpost. Looking at the rate of crimes that happen in Nharira, we cannot operate without a Police base. “We recorded high crime rates when Police was stationed here and now that they are gone we fear that crime might increase tenfold. Something needs to be done to make sure that the Nharira community gets a Police base,” said Chidembo. Police base closure worries Chivhu villagers SIMBARASHE MTEMBO MIRROR REPORTER MASVINGO – Regional Magistrate Bishard Chineka has remanded an alleged Gutu serial rapist and robber who severely assaulted his victims and left them for dead in custody to June 7, for trial. Edmore Vangana (38) of Musimudzanwa Village under Chief Chitsa struck his victims unconscious using logs, raped them and left them for dead. He stabbed one woman with a knife on the hands and legs several times before raping and stealing from her. He also severely assaulted another woman using a log on the ankles and knees to immobilize her. Vangana who is believed to have been released from prison under the Presidential amnesty last year was arrested on May 14 for rape and attempted murder charges. Court documents state that he allegedly confessed to raping and severely assaulting three other women during Police indications. Masvingo Police Spokesperson, Inspector Kudakwashe Dhewa said the number of victims who have since reported rape, assault and theft cases now exceeds 14 since his arrest. “His matter is before the courts and I cannot comment on an ongoing case. What I can only say is that more women and theft victims have filed cases against him,” said Dhewa. Chief Chitsa of Gutu born Nyika Chibvongodze even pleaded with Police to arrest him after he received multiple complaints from villagers. He estimated that the number of cases against Vangana can rise to 30. Vangana left his first victim for dead on February 28, 2024. He attacked the woman (name withheld) after she disembarked from a bus at Dokota Primary School in Bhasera. He allegedly grabbed and dragged her into a bush, stabbed her several times on the hands and legs before raping her and stealing her mobile phone. He left her unconscious. The woman later regained consciousness and filed a Police report. He stole two solar panels from Stanley Dzivaguru (42) of Chinyika Business Centre. The solar panels were recovered by Police detectives during indications. Vangana attacked another woman on March 17 around 10 am. He allegedly struck her on the head with a log, sexually assaulted her and stole her cellphone before disappearing. On the next day he ambushed a woman who was on her way to work at 7 am. He allegedly struck her twice on the head and severely hit her ankles and knees before he raped her. After the act, he went away with her mobile phone and a brown handbag containing money and her particulars. His last recorded crime happened on March 29, when he attacked a mother who was carrying her infant child. Vangana allegedly tried to strike the baby but the mother used her body as a shield. (AP Photo/ Themba Hadebe) JOHANNESBURG (AP) — South African opposition parties were meeting Friday and will continue crunch talks into next week to consider the ruling African National Congress' offer to become part of a government of national unity. ANC failed to secure a majority in last week's highly contested election, but some opposition parties are already rejecting the party's offer because of deep-seated divisions. Senior officials of the main opposition Democratic Alliance, or DA, will meet on Monday to discuss the centrist party's approach to the negotiations. Moyo told Two Nations in an interview that he is anxious to see GSU moving to its 89-hectare site in the town and will soon be engaging the tertiary institute to start building its administrative offices. Gwanda allocated GSU 89 hectares within its locality. GSU is currently operating from its campus in Filabusi. He said that Gwanda has a total population of 30 000 residents and the coming of GSU into town will see this jump by 40% to 42 000 and the downstream business benefits are significant. The other higher institution of learning in Gwanda is Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo Polytechnic which has between 4 000 and 6 000 students. The University currently has offices at the local authority premises. “As a provincial capital, we have Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo Polytechnic and we are looking forward to have an additional tertiary institution, Gwanda State University. With that in mind, it is in our focus that town will have population growth due to the operations of the colleges. Our verge is to come up with big spaces to create residential stands and flats for students’ accommodation,” he said. The ANC lost its long-held majority in last week's vote but remained the biggest party. An ANC spokesperson said Wednesday that it was now leaning toward a government of national unity that would bring together many of the political parties in a broad agreement, rather than a direct coalition with the main opposition, the Democratic Alliance. (AP Photo/Jerome Delay) Parties are under pressure to conclude negotiations and reach an agreement by June 16, because South Africa's constitution requires them to do so within 14 days after the declaration of the election results. South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, who is ANC leader, announced on Thursday that the party had decided to form a government of national unity and had invited all parties to join, a process that is expected to be complex considering vast divisions among the opposition parties themselves. Most of the opposition parties don't differ only with the ANC on various socioeconomic policies, but are also at extreme odds with each other on economic policies like land redistribution and affirmative action. Opposition party Action SA has already declared it won't be part of the negotiations, saying that it refuses to work with the ANC. In what looks likely to be a government of national unity reminiscent of a path taken by the Nelson Mandela-led ANC after the country's first democratic election in 1994, the party has decided to invite a myriad of opposition parties to be part of the government. While Mandela insisted on a unity government despite the ANC having won by an overwhelming majority with nearly 63% of the national vote, the ANC has been forced into the current situation by its worst electoral performance ever, dropping from the 57.5% it got in the 2019 election to 40% this year, a decline of 17.5%. Shortly after Ramaphosa's announcement, the EFF's leader took to X to reject Ramaphosa's proposal of a government of national unity and accused the ANC of arrogance despite failing to win a majority. The EFF is among the top five parties after the election with just over 9% of the national vote, having declined from the 11% it garnered in 2019 but is expected to form a crucial part of the eventual outcome of the negotiations. “The arrogance continues even after the South African voters issued warning signs. You can’t dictate the way forward as if you have won elections,” EFF leader Julius Malema said. "We are not desperate for anything, ours is a generational mission. “We can’t share power with the enemy,” Malema said. In 2023, DA declared the Economic Freedom Fighters as its No. 1 enemy. DA, which got just over 21% of the national vote to remain the second-biggest party, said its highest decision-making body, the Federal Council, would meet on Monday to consider its options. “I can't say now what the position of the DA is, we have a whole negotiation team and we are meeting as the federal council on Monday. We will have a framework for negotiations that we will release this weekend,” Democratic Alliance federal chairperson Helen Zille said Friday. The fifth-biggest party with nearly 4% of the national vote, the Inkatha Freedom Party, on Friday expressed willingness to be part of the government of national unity, but was also set to discuss the matter with its party structures over the next few days. “In principle, the IFP is not averse to a GNU (government of national unity). However, the devil is in the details, which will become clearer in the coming days ... enabling the IFP to make a wellconsidered decision,” IFP spokesman Mkhuleko Hlengwa said. The uMkhonto weSizwe Party led by former President Jacob Zuma, who left the ANC, was the latest to enter the negotiations, with the party confirming on Thursday that it had begun talks with the ANC after initially failing to respond to the party's invitation. The party has raised objections about the election results to the country's electoral body, citing alleged voting irregularities and threatening to boycott the first sitting of Parliament to swear in the country's new lawmakers. Economists say that the markets are keenly awaiting the outcome of the negotiations to see the composition of the next government of Africa's most developed economy, and the economic policies it will pursue. Luck Jamu (33) and Allan Jamu (21) of Mutorwa Village under Chief Musikavanhu in Chibuwe, Chipinge will be back in court on June 11, 2024. They are charged with killing a giraffe and unlawful possession of giraffe meat in contravention of Section 59 A and B chapter 20.14 of the Parks and Wildlife Management Act. The brothers allegedly killed the giraffe in Humany Ranch. Allan was also seen selling giraffe meat at Chiororo Beerhall, Chiredzi. Circumstances are that Gift Mutetwa, a game ranger on night patrol discovered the carcass of a giraffe in Humany Ranch on 25 May. He traced footsteps from the carcass and they led him to the brothers’ homestead. He found giraffe meat and legs in a kitchen at the homestead leading to the brothers’ arrest. The suspension is for six months without pay. Efforts to get a comment from Reverend Liberty Maadza were futile but Chipinge Times is in possession of a letter authored by UCCZ president Reverend John Matiza dated May 15, 2024 and effecting the suspension. Matiza confirmed the case but refused to comment further saying that it was a spiritual matter. Efforts to get a comment from Maadza were futile. After seeing a status of someone swimming on the girl’s phone, Maadza allegedly sent a WhatsApp message and asked the girl if she can swim and suggested that they go swimming one day. “What about your wife…you are supposed to take your wife there not me,” responded the girl in a WhatsApp message. Maadza is also said to have persistently asked the girl to come to his place. Chipinge Times is reliably informed that Maadza has since moved out of the church house but is still attending church in Chikanga. However, some church members complained that the six months slapped on Maadza is too lenient considering that former president Ephraim Ngadziore suspended other priests for two years for similar cases. “This is not a case that we permit to be published in the newspaper. We dealt with the case in the spiritual life of the church and these cases are not taken to the press,” said Matiza “This letter serves to Rev Liberty Maadza. To page C2

The Mirror: Ihwai nekuhwikwa Religious news Page 22 07 - 13 June 2024 ww.masvingomirror.com Religious News Ps Trymore Dzobo That The world is moving at a very fast pace is no news. The Term the "world has become a global village "is no more a cliche but more entrenched in reality . With just a mobile device u can access information from virtually any part of the World. Social media platforms ( Facebook Twitter etc)have audiences into billions in virtually every nation . For the gospel there's been no better time in history to make the message of Christ and Him crucified more available ,even the hitherto "Anti Christian "Territories will have to contend with the almost unarrest-able Influence of technology . Now you can miss a church service and yet not miss it by sitting at home and watching the service online,You can undo the "burden "of carrying printed bibles and simply use your bible app on your phone ,iPads etc. Intriguing and interesting . Everything becomes so easy ,information ,access ,communication takes less stress that you begin to wonder whether with this ,the magnificence of the instructions in Matthew 28:18-20&Mark16:15-16 require the word "Go" anymore . You start to imagine whether the instructions and admonition to attend Church meetings ,fellowship with saints won't be reviewed whether we still need to add " gather " ,assembly /assemble ,come together ,fellowship . Or the truths of the Spirit working amongst us might not be effective anymore since we can comfortably communicate without any form of physical contacts . Hence Ordination, laying on of hands etc may have to redefined or replaced by more technologically friendly modes of ministry. These ministries can easily be subsumed under the convenience with which the social media has evolved. I can go on and on.. Coming with this ease of information and communication is the flip side to everything . With the same ease i need not go around like paul will say to be a "busy body " to gossip ,all I in need is a phone ,evil communication isn't as long drawn ,with a blackberry messenger ,whastsapp etc I can chat with satan himself with no form of interference or observation by anyone .i can do more without been seen and sin as much too. Also,I can lie ,fabricate stories ,add to peoples words or take away and before i retract or it's refuted or rebutted ,a billion people would have believed and acted on it . And the truth might never be known ! A phone will further make the Solomonic wisdom of Guarding my mind rather more demanding as porn sites need not be browsed ,they stare at me on Facebook ,available with ease of blackberry and Chat messaging ,also adultery and fornication require no more than the discretion of locking my device and arranging for covert and sinister modus operandi to engage in illicit affairs . Even the Noble cause of the ministry of the Word has been simplified . Everybody now "teaches doctrine "on Facebook ,the unaccountable believer, unruly ,carnal etc Those who won't serve in church nor even sit down to fully be formed . All that's needed is keep copying what someone else is saying ,adapt it to your style ,come under the cliche ,"Radical Grace"," prophetic flows ","new creation realities ". You don't have to be well grounded or tested. Get a profile on any of these platforms or start to blog and you will reach as much Audience as the largest church in the World. Paul's apostolic injunction of 1Timothy 3:1-8 will be sidestepped as its a free space and the right of speech is well inspired. I need not be experienced ,just need to post and have a friends list( which is open ended ), A " congregation" has emerged ! I need not to have a local assembly and pastor . I can " learn " from ALL! Call everybody I watch on tv ,YouTube my pastor ,mentor etc. As this media makes "pastoral oversight "out of nothing and makes nothing of true pastoral oversight !If u understand what I mean . I still wonder how Paul's instruction to stop false teachers and peters vociferous warning to disallow unlearned teachers ,Johns instructions to discard "a diotrephes" would be carried out. How would paul have confronted peter?since he need not go to Antioch to influence the congregation .Peters tweet would have done the havoc .You might never even decipher its sphere of influence . So Paul won't plead such interference . These truly are very different times. Coming with all these is the spirit of the world . Lightness, looseness ,loquaciousness . The freedom to be " free", say anything ,address anyone without recourse to respect and regard. After all it affords you the garb of anonymity . Godlessness ,yes the ungodly have found stronger voices to attack the scriptures . They do it with ease and need not gather people to do so.Just post it and it reaches millions of minds. Churches and ministries can hardly maintain its sanctity of both information and oversight of the same without the media making it impossible for david not to tell it in gath nor declare not on the streets of askelon. As the messenger needs just tweet it for all "askelonites "and "gathites "to have the Information. Twisted ,bent, fabricated ,dishonoring ,it doesn't matter,Just tell it and rebroadcast it, the world has moved since the psalmist ! Without much ado ,The believer Must do the Word without adapting himself to the world but rather subject the World to the Word . He must take Paul's warnings seriously Ephesians 5:15-16 KJV [15] See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, [16] Redeeming the time, because the days are evil. This Age ( times ) is evil and satan is its god. He mustn't forget Paul's forewarning too 2 Timothy 4:3-4 KJV [3] For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; [4] And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables. He must remember the words Jesus told the 12 Matthew 10:16 KJV [16] Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves. Very needful now. We must use every media to teach the gospel and reach the unreached . We must however not allow the media ,its spirit and Broadways to review the scriptures and be so maltreated that certain emerging attitudes from the social media relegates christian principles to the background . If we refuse and follow the world, the inherent repercussions are innumerable . And we can't afford it. As I believer ..as I Facebook, tweet ,blog and surf the net I remember to Proverbs 4:23 KJV [23] Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life. And when I read or glance unedifying comments or articles I never forget Romans 12:2 KJV [2] And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. Finally Never forgetting that the Church I should belong to,be submitted to and be pastored through is NOT my friends list on Facebook or Twitter or blackberry. Different times ,changing seasons ,subtle devils but The never changing Word in an ever changing world remains my anchor through these storms . Have a blessed week ahead Jesus is Lord,We Win! The Mirror: Ihwai nekuhwikwa Sports news Page 25 07 - 13 June 2024 www.masvingomirror.com SIMBARASHE MTEMBO MIRROR REPORTER MASVINGO – I thought Uncle Dhongi was a madman! His hillbilly costume looks like pieces of cloth salvaged from a junkyard - a torn up jean trousers tied together with a neck tie and his 30 centimeter overly pointy shoes make up his famous costume. He spends the entire 90 minutes charged up - singing and dancing and claims he is yet to see a minute’s play since his forte is entertaining fans with his back to the field. His antics have led many to believe that he is always intoxicated or high on drugs – something he refuted and strongly condemned. “I don’t take alcohol or drugs. Some fans who enjoy my dancing buy me soft drinks. I can dance the whole 90 minutes because I’ll be enjoying myself. My wife understands my love and passion for football and she is okay with what I do,” he told The Mirror in a recent interview. Sekuru Dhongi is probably Eastern Region Division 1 log leaders FC Wangu Mazodze’s biggest unrecognized fan because he is still paying gate fees to entertain club supporters every match day. Born Neighbour Makuni, Uncle Dhongi is a sergeant in the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services (ZPCS) stationed at Mutimurefu Prison. His wife is also an officer in the ZPCS. He told The Mirror at the sidelines of a recent FC Wangu Mazodze match at Mucheke Stadium that he got the moniker Uncle Dhongi in 2011 after his grandmother sold off her donkey to raise his bus fare for ZPCS trials in Harare. Uncle Dhongi added that his costume was designed at Mutimurefu as part of the prison’s drama club attire. The prison’s drama club also has a monkey man costume usually seen at traditional dance festivals. “I passed selection but my name went missing from the successful candidates list. The presiding officer asked if anyone had any queries and I raised my hand. I told her that my grandmother sold her donkey for me to travel to Harare for trials and I don’t know what to tell her when I return home. At that point other recruits began chanting ‘siyai Dhongi apinde’ and that’s how I got employed and the moniker has stuck since then. Some of my coworkers don’t even know my real name “I love football. I began supporting Mazodze in 2022 because it has prospects of making it into the Premier Soccer League (PSL). I am a poet and have starred in several local dramas. I am a chief supporter in the ZPCS and have won multiple supporter awards at ZPCS Commissioner General games. I am in my final year at Masvingo Polytechnic studying to be an Environment Health Technician and I support the college team as well,” he said. SIMBARASHE MTEMBO MIRROR REPORTER MASVINGO – FC Wangu Mazodze head coach, John Nyikadzino is the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) Eastern Region Division 1 league Coach of The Month. He received the award and US$50 prize money after his team’s match at Mucheke Stadium on Saturday. The awards are sponsored by the region’s aspiring chairperson Major (Rtd) Special Matarirano and his campaign team. Matarirano is also holding weekly man of the match awards to promote players in the league. He has also assisted several former player start income generating projects. Mutare FC player Ngandu Mangala was awarded as Player of The Month and also received US$50 prize money. “We will announce the referee of the month in due course. We hold player of the match award on every match day except the final week of every month when we honour the best coach, referee and player. “The selection was done by members of the Zimbabwe Stakeholders Forum, match commissioners and the Candidate members,” said Matarirano. He said Nyikadzino was awarded the coach of the month award because his team collected the most points including high standards of play by the team, discipline on and off the field, overall bearing, focus and turnout. FC Wangu Mazodze won three fixtures and drew one in May. The club is topping the league with 22 points from eight games. The club thrashed Great Zimbabwe University FC 5-0, beat Chiredzi Stars 1- 0 and won 3-0 against Rusitu Tigers FC. The club drew nil all against second placed Buffaloes FC. THE Sport THE Mirror 07 - 13 June 2024 www.masvingomirror.com masvingo mirror masvingomirror SIMBARASHE MTEMBO MIRROR REPORTER MASVINGO – It was a befitting memorial as Guzzlers FC romped to a 3-1 victory over Mustaph FC in the Clayton ‘Cletso Mukanya’ memorial match played at Victoria High School grounds on Saturday. Guzzlers dedicated its victory to Clayton who was the team’s captain, match organiser and roving left back before his untimely death in January this year. The memorial was attended by close to 60 people, notably Clayton’s relatives led by his mother Chiedza Mujeuri, lawyers including former Masvingo Mayor Collen Maboke, Philip Shumba, Johannes Ruvengo, prosecutor Edwin Mbavarira and senior journalist Godfrey Mutimba among others. Masvingo Mayor Aleck Tabe later joined the memorial at Wimpy where Clayton’s friends and colleagues reflected on his life. Clayton’s mother said the family is overwhelmed by the support and gesture shown by her son’s friends and companions. “I am grateful. I am humbled by what his friends have done. It means a lot for us as a family to know that he left a landmark with his friends. They remembered him well and we are proud to know that his friends remember him,” she said. Mutimba said the score line is a befitting remembrance and tribute to Clayton. “This event was very important to us because it gave us the opportunity to remember his contribution to sport as a player and as an avid sports journalist. The event was a success. His friends came from all over and we were elated when his relatives attended and cheered the game,” said Mutimba. Shumba who is a Real Guzzlers player said Clayton was a leader par excellence. He said Clayton also managed the team’s affair and matches. “Clayton was a leader in the sense that he captained our team and an organiser par excellence. He handled game logistics. We saw it befitting to hold this match to honour our captain and leader,” said Shumba. Mustaph FC manager, Collen Maboke said the club participated in the memorial match because Clayton was a friend of football and a jolly journalist who supported grassroots football. “We decided to participate in this memorial because we played football with Clayton and he always covered our football matches. His death pains us and we saw it fit to remember our friend and a journalist we worked harmoniously with,” said Maboke. Smile on Mukanya - Guzzlers is in good hands The late Clayton Shereni.
