On Wednesday, the body of a Mkwasine man spent 12 hours in his house before it was removed because all three local Chiredzi Rural District Council (RDC) run clinics didn’t have body bags and disinfectants. Masvingo Provincial Medical Director (PMD) Dr Amadeus Shamu conceded that rural health institutions are not adequately equipped for the outbreak. “Rural health facilities are partly equipped to contain cholera. They are not adequately equipped. The majority of cholera deaths have been recorded in rural areas and we attribute this to their health belief system where they prioritise religion over health facilities as we saw in Gutu. Villagers first port of call id religious leaders. Regrettably, in some instances villagers stay some distance from health facilities and when they report their cases it will be late,” he said. Chiredzi Rural District Council (RDC) Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Ailes Baloyi confirmed that a body spent 12 hours in a house before it was removed. He said all clinics are equipped to contain cholera though some are struggling to cope. “That person fell ill at the farm and did not visit the clinic. It was too late when we went there with an ambulance. All clinics have been equipped to handle cholera cases. We have problems here and there but the situation is under control,” said Baloyi. The local authority’s Ward 21 Councillor Wellington Mudzimiri has since written letters of appeal to residents, corporates and development partners appealing for help. The letter states that the clinics are operating with only three nurses and do not have thermometers, Blood Pressure testing machines and stationery as counter books and ball point pens “We appeal for donations for all three clinics in Mkwasine that are grappling with cholera cases. We have over 50 confirmed cases and four deaths. Mkwasine Clinic is in dire need of cholera beds, tent, buckets with tapes, black bins, surgical gloves, washing powder and detergents, knapsack, drips, vomiting bowls, liquid soap and sanitisers,” reads part of the letter. Mudzimiri could not be reached for a comment by Rural clinics ill-equipped to combat cholera the time of going to Press as his mobile was unreachable. An outbreak was recorded in the Munyikwa area in Gutu and this saw Chief Munyikwa born Kirion Rashamira and Vanobva KwaMunyikwa Development Trust (Vamdet) mobilising resources to bolster Munyikwa, Chepiri and Muchekayaora clinics. They donated surgical gloves, aqua tablets, taped buckets and fuel for ambulances. The Munyikwa area has recorded over 80 cases. Amadeus Shamu. From page 1 Heavy industrial companies in Zimbabwe continue to be dogged by a plethora of problems exacerbated by complications of an economy on a tailspin. Zimasco which employs over 500 workers shut down the furnaces two weeks back and has since been operating with two that were recently refurbished and are power efficient, said Chief Operations Officer Namatai Mapfumo in an interview with The Mirror. He said the situation shows a need for special power tariffs for the ferrochrome industry. However, the special tariffs are being sought at a time when the country is on 20-hour load shedding because of low water volumes in Kariba and problems faced at Hwange Power Station. The price of ferrochrome fell between August and September on the world market while the price electricity rose. Zimasco is negotiating with the Zesa for a lasting solution to the challenges. Zimasco is a unit of China’s Sinosteel, and exports ferrochrome to Europe and Asia. “We have temporarily closed four of our six furnaces and in the meantime we run on two. The move was necessitated by increased cost of electricity over cost of the product in the international market where ferrochrome prices have declined. “We will use this time to carry out important maintenance on the four furnaces while we negotiate with the national power utility for favorable power tariffs. Given the current power cost, coupled with a depressed global market we found it prudent to switch off the four furnaces,” he said. Last year, Zimasco closed its Eastern plant because of high power tariffs leaving the Western plant running Sinosteel’s mining unit in a compromised situation. Ferrochrome is an alloy used in the production of stainless steel. Zimasco shuts down 4 furnaces

The Mirror: Ihwai nekuhwikwa Local news Page 4 1 - 7 December 2023 vwww.masvingomirror.com 071 689 5703 Chipinge Times & Two Nations Editor: Ellen Mlambo Editorial Comment We are once more into the annual 16 Days of activism against gender based violence (GBV) when during this short period we are all encouraged to fight this scourge that is besetting us as a nation and in many other countries. In spite of awareness campaigns, education and information we are here still finding ourselves not making much progress as GBV cases in our country continue to rise. The situation is aggravated by the current economic meltdown which is often one of the main reasons for GBV. As it is most of the GBV cases that attract our attention include mainly incidences where men and women are harassed, beaten up or even killed. A lot is happening too where children and even babies are experiencing gender based violence. However there is this other type of violence that is going on but is not put on the list of the different kinds of gender based violence where someone is clearly a perpetrator and the other a victim. This is where someone commits suicide after being dumped by a spouse or lover. Suicide can be a form of self-inflicted gender based violence because there are gender dynamics involved. This of course will obviously be debatable. We are currently seeing many cases of people killing themselves after they have been dumped by their spouses. This is happening even with teenagers who commit suicide after being dumped by a boyfriend or girlfriend. Suicide is a violent act resulting in loss of life. Although it is self-inflicted one can of course argue that the person who dumps his or her partner is also the perpetrator. However it is the person taking his or her own life who makes the final decision to actually do so. People react to dumping differently. After being dumped someone will just go on to terminate his or her own life. However there is this case of someone who after finding his wife in bed with her lover packed a suitcase with his clothes and silently left home for good and went on with his life. Suicide is avoidable. Let us as a nation take serious steps to avoid it. Couples need to talk over their problems and solve them amicably. If a partner feels that he or she cannot go on with the relationship and need to get out it is better to sit down and openly talk about it so that they can amicably part ways. Where this does not happen the aggrieved should find someone to confide in if they are failing to cope with the stress. A close friend, relative or church leader would come in handy for a problem shared is a problem halved. A national call centre dedicated to suicide counseling coupled with vigorous awareness and education campaigns will save lives starting at school level because even young learners are killing themselves after being bumped. Suicide does not solve anything but leaves behind a plethora of challenges that will need to be tackled by those left behind. Suicide can be gender based violence NetOne Pvt Ltd, a leading digital solutions telecommunications company, is embracing the spirit of gratitude and gifting through their ongoing “Pinda Manake ne NetOne” Christmas promotion. I know a lot of people might be wondering why I am sounding like a preacher or man of god. I deliberately wrote man of god in small caps to remind you all that you are Men or Women of God, not those clowns. Today I am going to write about one of them. So, like always I will be minding my own business when I bump into juicy ones. I am told there is this retired gunners who started his church around town and it now has a sizeable following. I heard the guy has all the military titles like Commander One or Military Prophet kkkkk Hoyo umwe Madungwe. So, a young couple in Rujeko joined the prayer group and later the church. According to my source the couple used to own a FunCargo which they later lent to the prophet whenever he was going to spread the word of god. The Commander started lusting for the pencil-slim wife of Fatso the owner of the FunCargo. HOTH is not privy to what actual happened, but I am told he finally managed to trick the woman into a relationship. The Mirror: Ihwai nekuhwikwa Page 7 1 - 7 December 2023 www.masvingomirror.com Business News SYDNEY MUBAIWA MIDLANDS BUREAU CHIEF GWERU – Gweru City Council has finally received three fire-tenders from Belarus controversially procured by Government using Devolution Funds Government procured 133 fire tenders for all local authorities using devolution allocations for councils. However, there was an outcry from many quarters that the firetenders were way above the market prices and the deal was done to line-up politicians’ pockets. The total cost of the fire tenders is US$ 1 392 888 million. Gweru now has a total of four fire tenders including the only one that it had. Commissioning the fire tenders, Midlands Provincial and Devolution Affairs Minister Owen Ncube said the delays in attending to fire in the city was a cause for concern. “I am honored to grace the commissioning of these three fire tenders acquired through the devolution funds. This resonate with Government’s thrust in capacitating councils and enhance service delivery. Early this year, Government acquired 133 fire tenders from Belarus as a direct mechanization drive through Devolution Funds,” he said. Speaking at the same event, Gweru Mayor, Martin Chivhoko applauded government for its assistance in procuring the fire tenders. “Our vision as a city is to ensure that we have fire substations so that we reduce the distance travelled to any fire case. With substations, we will ensure that our reaction time is shorter,” he said. Chivhoko said fire-tenders work hand in hand with ambulance so the City Council was going to procure four ambulance; two this year and another two next year. Gweru finally receives US$1,39 m Belarus fire-tenders SYDNEY MUBAIWA MIDLANDS BUREAU CHIEF SHURUGWI – Unki, one of Zimbabwe’s large mining companies and Technoserve, a non-governmental organisation working with 600 irrigation farmers in Shurugwi have constructed a US$350 000 pack shed used for storing horticultural products before they are exported. The pack shed is for storage of horticultural produce before export to Canada, United Kingdom, South Africa and Germany. On Wednesday last week, Assistant Shurugwi District Development Coordinator (DDC) Tavonga Mufarachisi toured the facility and later gave certificates to top five farmers who had excelled in peas production last season. Mufarachisi described the shed as a new phenomenon in the Midlands Province. The state of art refrigerated pack shed becomes the largest in the Midlands Province with a capacity to hold 50 tonnes of produce at a time. It is located at Hillingden Farm, Chachacha in Shurugwi and is already operational. It employs 31 workers. The facility is a follow-up to the horticultural projects supported by TechnoServe in Shurugwi. The organisation has 600 farmers across five irrigation schemes in Shurugwi. Each farmer tends to at least 0.2 hectares of land, cultivating various crops such as peas, fine beans, chillies, baby corn and passion fruits. TechnoServe country director, William Zirebwa said the biggest challenges for farmers has been the lack of markets. His organisation worked with farmers since 2019 to address the issue and took advantage of the significant demand for horticultural products in the international market. “In 2019, we began to work with farmers and identified marketing as the main obstacle. To address this, we sought out markets in Canada, United Kingdom, South Africa and Germany. “Obtaining the Global Gap certificates now enables farmers to directly connect with international consumers,” said Zirebwa. The five irrigation schemes who got the Global Gap certificates are Shungudzevhu, Gonye, Chuni, Taguta and Zananda. “With these innovative initiatives, I can see a new phenomenon in Shurugwi and the Midlands province as a whole. “This project is huge and has a great potential to transform the lives of people who will be participating in the agricultural value chain,” said Mufarachisi. The farmers who won prizes are Maybe Chirima, Memory Mandishe, Roleta Musindo, Liberty Magwegwe and Ben Nkani. A beneficiary of the project Memory Mandishe from Gonye irrigation scheme expressed her gratitude and excitement for the project. “Last season, I earned US$1 000 net profit and I managed to pay university fees for my children,” she said. The walkathon was a build-up to the fourteenth annual national walkathon taking walkers 152km from Harare- Guruve over three days. Last year’s national edition took walkers from Gokomere Mission to Bikita. The walkathon was capped with the planting of 187 fruit trees donated by Tongaat Huletts at the Gokomere Central Primary School (CPS) orchard. Other sponsors for the provincial edition are Nyaradzo Group, National Social Security Authority (NSSA) and Garande Great Zimbabwe Tour Guide. The 2023 walkathon dubbed the 500 million tree Walkathon is under the theme: Trees and Forests for Ecosystem Restoration and Improved Livelihoods. Deputy Director Environmental Planning and Management in the Minister of State for Masvingo office Clorence Matewe was the guest of honour. He applauded the FOTE initiative. He said that the establishment of nurseries across the country will see communities self-sustaining as they will realise income from the sale of the seedlings. “I am told that FOTE has established tree seedling producing nurseries throughout the country that are supplying a variety of tree seedlings to our communities. Three of these tree seedling nurseries are in Masvingo Province at Gwindingwi High School in Bikita, Muzogwi Primary School in Chivi and 4.2 Infantry Battalion in Gutu,” he said. Nyaradzo Group Masvingo manager Fortune Mawoyo said FOTE has set up 26 nurseries since inception in 2010. “FOTE is for everyone. What it means is that when you see litter you pick it up and educate anyone who does not properly dispose litter. This is not for Nyaradzo Group only. “FOTE is a trust registered in 2010. There are several companies partnering the trust, these include, OK Zimbabwe, Stanbic Bank, Mimosa, Seed Co Limited, Tanganda Tea Company Limited, EMA, Zimplats, Standard Chartered, Pacific, Innscor, Road Angels, ZB Financial Holdings, Forestry Commission, Grand Thornton and Old Mutual Zimbabwe among others,” he said. Masvingo Forest Commission Forestry Conservation and Extension Officer David Mandongwe said the Fever/ Muunga tree is the tree of the year. He said the Fever tree grows in areas with a high lying water table. “The 2023 tree of the year is the Fever/ Muunga Tree. It grows in areas with a high lying water table. It has immense benefits to the community. Today we are planting fruit trees because the water table is relatively low. “The Muunga tree cures fever, is eye medication, it makes good timber and is an ornamental tree. It also has nitrogen fixing properties and can be planted in our fields and is fed upon by our livestock,” he said. Gokomere CPS students recited poems and acted dramas urging communities to desist from deforestation. School head Mhangarai Celestino Masakadza applauded FOTE for bringing the initiative to pupils. “Children are the future and we should properly indoctrinate them from a young age. We should educate them to preserve our forests and this is what you have done today. We applaud you for this initiative. As a school, we will water the plants that you have left. You should come and eat the fruits that they will bear someday,” he said. Until next year environmental walkers! Hungwe, the Vice Chancellor, Professor V. N. Muzvidziwa, the University Council, Senate, Staff and the entire Student body wish to convey hearty condolences to the Bhebe family, and the nation at large, on the untimely death of the country’s foremost historian, inspirational scholar, Pan Africanist and academic par excellence, Professor Emeritus Ngwabi Mulunge Bhebe. This distinguished man of letters devoted over half a century of his academic career towards advancing education on the African continent. His intellectual itinerary entailed stints in Sierra Leone, Lesotho, Swaziland and Zimbabwe where he also worked as a school textbook writer, public intellectual, administrator, and quality control guru. At the time of his death, he was the Chair of the Zimbabwe Council for Higher Education (ZIMCHE) governing board. As evinced by his numerous international appointments and accolades, Professor Bhebe was a global thought leader who placed Zimbabwe and the African continent on the world intellectual map. As the founding father of Midlands State University, he led to the institution’s flourishing in the areas of learning, research and innovation. His visionary leadership epitomised the realisation of Sustainable Development Goal 4 of empowering communities through inclusive and equitable quality education for all. Through his ground-breaking publications and supervision of scholarly works too numerous to recount, Professor Bhebe blazed the trail in reclaiming our glorious African past from the shackles of Eurocentric myopia. His seminal contribution to the development of nationalist historiography reinforced the African idiom that, “until the lions tell their tale of the hunt, the story of the hunt will always glorify the hunter”. To his devoted life partner, Dr. Faith NtabeniBhebe, we extend deepest sympathies during this difficult time. Your exemplary companionship spurred Professor Bhebe to selflessly serve the nation. His Excellency, the President of the Republic of Zimbabwe and Chancellor of all state universities, Cde. Dr. Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa’s declaration of national hero status and conferment of the Star of Zimbabwe Silver Medal upon Professor Emeritus Bhebe, is a fitting tribute to a man who embodied the treasured ideals of patriotism, dedication and service to the nation. The academic fraternity has lost a towering thoughtleader whose numerous international appointments added lustre to the image of our great nation. While his physical absence leaves an immense void, Professor Bhebe’s legacy as an institution builder and tireless advocate of inclusive quality education will continue to inspire us. Midlands State University, which has risen to become a luminous beacon of learning, shall build upon the strong foundations laid by its founding Vice Chancellor to greater heights, tooling more hands, transforming more minds and shaping more destinies as we pursue the overarching goal of an educated, informed and enlightened citizenry for the ‘Africa We Want’. This emerged at a meeting of village heads from Headman Mapiye’s area who met at the Civic Center in Masvingo last Tuesday. Mapiye is one of the recently resuscitated Chief Bere’s headmen. The meeting was called to look into issues affecting villages under Mapiye and particularly the matter of boundaries. The meeting which was attended by 38 village heads and chaired by Mapiye observed that Government did not demarcate boundaries between Charumbira and Chief Bere’s area hence there is high tension as the two groups of people squabble over boundaries. The village heads called on Government to urgently attend to the issue of official boundaries. Headman Mapiye born Gwitima Pisirayi Mapiye said he is worried over the issue of boundaries with Charumbira. Village 16A, village head, Innocent Hasha said the commotion between the two chieftainships will escalate unless Government comes in to pronounce the boundaries to the two sides. Chief Bere said, “Our Chiefdom was dissolved by the whites and Chief Charumbira and Chief Zimuto encroached into our land. Historical boundaries are known and for all my Village heads are official in their areas. I briefed President Mnangagwa over the issue and he knows what is happening. We are still waiting for them and the Village heads from Charumbira's know in their hearts that the land was taken back by its rightfull owners." Chief Charumbira wasn't reached for comments since his numbers went unanswered. "We thank Government for resuscitating our chiefdom but they should now come back and clarify the boundaries. The young man literally begged for sex from the step-mother (his father’s other wife), asking her “muchembere ndipeiwo (mother please can I have it)?” The step mother’s seven-year-old grandson arrived at the scene to find his grandmother lying on the ground with her legs up and Nelson Chuma (27) of Velemu Village, Chingwizi in Mwenezi on top with the panty and skin tight already pulled off on one leg. Chuma appeared before Regional Magistrate Judith Zuyu this week facing attempted rape charges. After the boy left, Chuma advanced towards the stepmother and said “muchembere ndipeiwo” (please mum may I have). Allegedly puzzled, the stepmother asked what it is he was asking for and Chuma added “ndipeiwo ndiwane kurarama” (please let me have, I am starving) but the stepmother refused. Chuma then grabbed the stepmother by the waist and tried to push her to the ground but she clutched to a tree and screamed and no one heard her. Regional Magistrate Judith Zuyu told ZRP officers at the meeting held in Chiredzi on Friday to take advantage of 16 days of activism against gender-based violence and raise awareness on this crucial information. The meeting was told that the only available remedy against HIV infection, PostExposure Prophylaxis (PEP) works within the first 72 hours of the act. The issue was raised after Police indicated that a number of arrested rapists are HIV positive. “Police should use the 16 days of activism against gender-based violence to raise awareness on the need to report rape immediately. Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP), the drug administered to stop infection with HIV only works within the 72 hours of the act. There should therefore be no delay in reporting rape,” said Zuyu. Chiredzi Victim Friendly Unit Police officer Ruzai Muguraguri said her charges were ready for the awareness and pleaded with stakeholders to help them to intensify the campaign. Stakeholders who attended the meeting include Msasa, Childline, Prisons, Prosecutors, Police from Zaka, Chiredzi, Chikombedzi and Mwenezi, lawyers and health sector workers are ready for the 16 days. Report rape within 72 hours in case of HIV – victims told BY NOBERT MUZONDO MUTARE Gender based violence is criminalised under the Domestic Violence Act,(Chapter 5:16).This form of violence occurs between closely related people and usually within the private sphere.Women and Children always live to narrate their horror at the hands of dominant male perpetrators.Figures recently released by the national police makes a sad reading in that most men are culprits as compared to women. In most situations societal norms discourage survivors from opening up and report their cases to those outside the family setup, causing most women and children to silently bear the brand of brutality by their husbands, farhers or other close relatives. In some situations, reports are made to the police but soon after braving to relate her case, the same society clamour for a withdrawal saying "chakafukidza dzimba matenga" a shona saying which means what which cover house top is a roof. This saying discourages opening up to others on gender based violence, confining it to the roof of the affected survivor, thereby dealing a big blow to efforts towards eliminating gender based violence. However,it is sobering to note that the powers that be have done some notable strides in promoting social responses towards gender based violence thereby ensuring non perpetual or repro- duction of this unhealthy crime from one generation to the next. As we join the world in 16 days of cam- paigning against Gender Based VIo- lence which commences as from the 25th November to 10 December,we have to remain alive to the fact that Gender based violence affects women and girls owing to their gender . Survivors must open up in order to allow proper social responses. Recent media reports point to good inten- tions by the government in that it wants to have a data base of cases of gender based violence hence the need to avoid "chakaf- ukudza dzimba" mantra. This is a possibility only when the society dispels some myth which pro- mote the notion that women are at the mercy of a stronger male dominated community, hence the need by then to play a passive role within the societal set up.This notion promotes a dark side of the real situation on the ground as well as causing gender based violence not easy to detect.Usually where a woman expe- riences physical violence and sustains a swollen face due to a barrage of fists from her husband ,she usually feign a tooth ache ,all in the name of wanting to protect the marriage .To add insult to injury, the perpetrator usually gratifies his pugunistic ego by forcing himself upon the body of the injured woman for sexual gratification, thereby further commiting marital rape ,a crime which the society questions on the basis that by marrying,a woman automatically consent to sex. However, with the way the world is chang- ing, this previously assumed consent is now outlawed .Our society must not be known to have an orientation towards a culture which glorifies violence against women as a tolerable behaviour. Norms which grant men control over female behavior must be thrown into the dust bin ready to be disposed by refuse collectors. The advent of human rights have seen more women awakening to their rights and men have to awaken to the fact that those issues which used to be confined under the roof are now being proclaimed at the rooftop Times have move on ,both men and women share eqaul rights and a vio- lation of these rights, especially women's special rights invites the presence of law enforcement agents into one's bedroom. It is normal for human beings to flee from any impending danger. This is usually evident with survivors of Gender Based Violence who seek refuge from close rela- tives before seeking relief from the law .The police, the courts and even hospitals have established victim victim friendly sections. However, social norms do not fa- vour a victim friendly set up at family or community level. It is failure to differenti- ate between gender roles and sex roles which result in most societies to have justifications for violence against women. It is a God given role for men to impreg- nant women and it is a God given role for women to carry the pregnancy ,suckle the babie.Caring for the baby is not con- fined to the woman alone just as good as preparing meals for the family. The notion that if a woman fails to prepare a meal to the satisfication of the man,he deserves a beating promotes violence against women. In some societies it is not surpris- ing to see the boy child doing the same to the girl child. On the other hand, some religious sects are known for violating the rights of in- mature girls taking them as an addition to a growing number of a polygamous list of wives.Deflowering a girl whose breast are in their early days of protruding is taken as heroism within the culprit cycles yet at the same time violating the law as well as the girl child's rights. The same religious sects within our society glorify the passiveness of women, encouraging them not to challenge the status quo and perpetually play victim.Though inroads have been made to create gender based violence awareness structures, when it comes to those under the age of eighteen years, the law must be aligned with the constitution in which those under eighteen years are legally regarded as minors being fully protected by the law when it comes to sexual offences. The story of a thirteen year old girl who died giving birth at a certain religious shrine is still fresh in our minds. We have to bear in mind the fact that violence begets violence ,subjecting our children to gender based violence through witnessing marital violence breeds a future generation of abusers Children are regardef by many as a window of hope ,exposing them to abuse makes our current effort to eliminate gender based violence look bleak. Marital conflict emanating from various reasons cause men to vent their frustration upon women .It is worrisome that Gender based violence can be caused by the abundance of wealth with male controlling over wealth and business decision making within the family. Women mostly suffer the immediate effects of violence , burdening them immediately ,especially at private and individual level. However, the results of this violence are also felt by the immediate and extended family due to the breaking down of the family fabric.Family structures are threatened resulting in children suffering emotional injury as a result of helplessly watching their mothers and sisters being butchered by their heartless fathers. In situations where a marriage union is broken up, it leaves a women headed single parented family with the woman struggling to make ends meet amid harsh economic conditions.Women and their children continue to struggle against increased levels of poverty as well as the psychological wounds of failing to re-establish a health relationship again. It is a common sight to see survivors of gender based violence venting their frustration on their innocent children ,reinforcing the negative experiences of the children who would end up accepting gender based violence as a viable means to resolve conflict. This reproduces violence and have an effect of perpetuating lvio- lence. It seems we have a mountain to climb in order to realise the dream of eliminating gender based violence if the society continue adopt "chakafukidza dzimba " mantra. Towards elimination of gender based violence -saying no "chakafukidza dzimba" mantra Judith Zuyu.

Youth dominate Mat South business awards No more tasty and nutritious sadza in Chibhoraniland CHIBHORANI TALK WITH SEKURU TAURAI Am back again with the same topic of maize sadza with some calling it ‘’jembi’’ while claiming that this name came from the initials GMB, Dura reChibhoraniland which of course is mostly associated with maize. What I want to focus on this time is the quality of today’s sadza, jena muponesi or jembi. You see, the maize sadza people are consuming these days is so different from the sadza we used to eat during our old good days. My dying memory tells me that there was this maize variety that was called R52 or something like that. This variety was very tall and produced long cobs that had quite big seeds compared to the sometimes tiny ones that we have now. The jena muponesi that we ate then had a beautiful and tantalizing aroma that you could smell some good metres away while it was being cooked and it was very tasty. It was the same with the maputi as you could tell from a distance that someone was roasting maize even when you were using the hot soil or rufuse from below a ground fire. Push the Fast-forward button and fast track to the present moment. What you will currently see in Chibhoraniland is a plethora of different maize seeds from numerous legal seed companies and fake seed producers out to make a quick buck out of unsuspecting farmers. The problem now is that the sadza made from these multiple seed varieties is quite tasteless, more so if you buy the maize mealie meal from the supermarket as millers would have extracted some of the best components from the seeds to make other profitable products. Of course most Chibhoraniland citizenry continue to prefer jena muponesi but not because of its nice taste but rather as an addiction. The other thing that happens here is that this sadza will become very hard in a very short time soon after cooking and will be even harder when you try to eat it the following day as munya, something that we used to enjoy with milk as breakfast.` On another note, much as we appreciate research and production of new seed varieties, the supersonic speed at which we are doing this in Chibhoraniland is just too much. We are ending up with so many different seed companies introducing so many different varieties of maize seed literally every year. This, that and that and that seed company will be pushing their innumerable seed varieties as the best for this and that region to such an extent that farmers easily end up confused especially kwedu kuno, rural of the rural kumachonyonyo. In the face of climate change they will claim that their seeds are drought resistant or will not be attacked by these and those pests. Seed production is now big business and the competition is quite stiff but are the customers getting the right seeds that will give them nutritious and tasty sadza? IPFANI NAUPFIWA/ ZWANINI LANI LIZWIWE Page T3 1 - 7 December 2023 www.twonations.co.zw BY ALPHIOUS MUGARI Alcohol, Drug and Substance Abuse, also known as Substance Use Disorder (SUD), is a mental health condition in which an individual has a problematic pattern of substance use that causes distress and/or impairs their life. Media reports in Zimbabwe paint a picture of a worrying and escalating state of substance use with substances such as methamphetamine (crystal meth, mutoriro or guka), broncleer, and marijuana being the commonly abused. There is undoubtedly an escalating prevalence of Alcohol, Drug and Substance Abuse in Zimbabwe, with over half of the people admitted to inpatient mental health units such as Ngomahuru, Ingutsheni and Chikurubi Psychiatric Unit reportedly experiencing a substance use disorder. As government, healthcare professionals and advocacy groups strive to combat drug abuse, it is crucial to shed light on the causes, effects and potential solutions to this ever-growing problem. Full implementation of the, Zimbabwe National Drug Master Plan (2020-2025) will significantly help in the fight against drug abuse. Major Drivers of Alcohol, Drugs and Substance Abuse The major causes of Alcohol, Drug and Substance Abuse among young people are peer pressure and the desire to experiment. This however ends up leading to drug tolerance, dependence and addiction. Young people are often victims of a psychological phenomenon called deindividuation; they leave their personalities, values and beliefs while adjusting to their peers’. Drug abuse may start as a way to socially connect and most people use drugs for the first time in social situations due to the strong desire to fit in to the group. When one spend time with a loved one, the body releases a chemical called dopamine, which makes one feel pleasure. It becomes a cycle; you seek out these experiences because they reward you with good feelings. Alcohol, drugs and substances, in the same manner also send massive surges of dopamine through your brain, leading to a person desiring more of these drugs or substances thereby lead- ing to drug dependence and addiction. The ease access and exposure to alcohol, drugs and substances in Zimbabwe’s towns and suburbs has also contrib- uted to the increase in sub- stance use disorder. Access to psychoactive substances is a significant environmental risk factor to drug abuse. The risk is further worsened by having a family member or peer who uses drugs and substances. Unemployment and economic hardships may trigger some youths to abuse drugs as a maladaptive coping mecha- nism. It is also worrying to note that most of the major suppliers of the illegal drugs are well known in most com- munities but they continue to ‘miraculously’ escape the ‘long arm of the law.’ Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) is another risk factor for Alcohol, Drug and Sub- stance Abuse among young people. ACE, refers to stress- ful, or traumatic events during childhood which can include childhood abuse, neglect, dysfunctional families, wit- nessing domestic violence as well as parental incarceration. Lack of household stability, income or employment for a parent may increase stress on the family and its vulnerability, pushing marginal individuals to find "solutions" or solace in drugs. Poor support systems emanating from dysfunctional families also pose a risk for drug abuse. Effects of Alcohol, Drug and Substance Abuse Young people who constantly abuse alcohol, drugs and substances often experience a myriad of problems, including academic problems, health problems (including mental health), poor inter-personal relationships, and involvement in criminal activities. Additionally, there are effects for family members, the community, and the entire society. In most cases, substance abuse drains a family's financial and emotional resources. Alcohol, Drug and Substance Abuse often lead to both short and long-term health effects. The Physical problems of drug abuse include increased risk of physical health issues, including heart disease, organ damage, cancer and stroke. On the other hand mental health problems of Alcohol, Drug and Substance Abuse usually include impaired cognitive functioning, hallucinations, personality changes as well as drug induced psychosis. Young people abusing drugs are at higher risk for mental health problems, including depression; conduct problems, eating disorders, sleeping dis- orders (insomnia) , personality disorders, suicidal ideation, attempted suicide, and even suicide. Alcohol, Drug and Substance Abuse also increases the chances of risky behaviours which can threaten a person’s life. The risky behaviours in- clude driving while intoxicated which may cause accidents, or engaging in unprotected sex which can result in unwanted pregnancies, and sexually transmitted infections which include HIV. Drug addiction can also result in criminal activities such as stealing and violent behaviours which can result in imprisonment. Most young people who abuse drugs such as crystal meth (mutoriro) end up selling their belongings or stealing to get money to support their addic- tion. Another major challenge that arises from Alcohol, Drug and Substance Abuse is dependence. Drug dependence refers to the strong desire to use the drug despite any related deterioration in one’s health, work, and social activities. Any attempt to stop using the drugs will result in withdrawal symptoms. Eventually, drug abuse can consume one’s life, stopping social and intellectual development. The uncontrollable craving to use drugs grows more important than anything else, including family, friends, career, and even one’s own health and happiness. Declining grades, absenteeism from school, social activities, and increased potential for dropping out of school are some academic problems associated with adolescent substance abuse. Consequently, the community drug abuse challenge is brought into the workplace. Impaired performance, Intoxication at work, lateness, disciplinary issues, absence from work and finally dismissal will come with substance use disorder. Without doubt, drug abuse leads to decline in productivity at individual, family, community, and national level. Recommendations The global focus on mental health, coupled with the need to achieve equitable access to mental health services, are major factors behind an ur- gent need to urgently address drug and substance abuse at all levels. A myriad of evidence based interventions to fight substance use disorder have emerged. The primary focus in fight- ing drug abuse must be on prevention, community involvement whilst taking an ecological perspective with a view to achieve social justice. Community initiated preven- tion strategies are crucial in combating substance abuse. The prevention strategies must focus on strengthening “pro- tective factors,” such as welldeveloped social skills, strong family bonds, attachment to school, and active involve- ment in the community and religious organizations. They must also reduce “risk factors” that increase vulnerability to drug abuse. Sport and recreational facilities must be availed at community level to keep young people oc- cupied. There is a great need of more vocational training centres to equip young people with life skills. Resilience training is also an important factor; even in high risk, adverse circumstances, many people are able to resist drugs. On the other hand, the government must increase funding for mental health programs and anti-drug abuse initiatives. More community based rehabilitation programs must be introduced to help those struggling with drug abuse. Law enforcement agents must work with local communities to fight drug peddling and drug abuse to improve quality of life. Police must show their commitment to fight drugs through arresting ‘real drug peddlers’ and not engage in ‘catch and release fishing’. On the other hand, deterring antidrug laws must be in place to make drug peddling more risky. Penalty for stock theft is very harsh (long jail sentence) yet selling drugs which destroys human life like crystal meth can be punished through community which is quite paradoxical. Schools can play a powerful role in drug abuse prevention. Teachers and administrators are the often the first to detect warning signs such as poor school attendance or declin- ing academic performance. Effective school programs teach young people to resist drugs through, developing personal and social skills that include decision making, stress management, communica- tion, social interaction, conflict resolution, and assertiveness. The schools also have a role to refer those at risk of drug abuse for professional help. Charity always begins at home; hence parents have a role to instil moral values (unhu/ Ubuntu) in their children. The more parents talk with their children about the dangers of drug abuse, the less likely it is that their children will experi- ment with them. In the African spirit of unhu/Ubuntu, it should take the whole village to raise a child rather than the Western individualistic ap- proach which makes young people more unaccountable. Prevention programs must also focus on enhancing parentchild communication and improve other family skills. With proper support and treatment, one can counteract the disruptive effects of drug abuse and regain control of life. There is need for counselling services from professional counsellors, psychologists and psychiatrists to help those struggling with drug abuse as well as those at risk. Those in need of rehabilitation will be referred for appropriate services. Rehabilitation should be seen as a means to help persons overcome addiction, not a form of punishment Educating young people through awareness campaigns on the dangers of drug abuse is also crucial in fighting drug abuse. The mass media can also be employed in awareness campaigns and programmes. The objectives of mass com- munication efforts must be very clear and with specific outcome goals for them to be effective. Media such as television, radio, newspapers, posters, brochures may reach a large number of people with behaviour change and antidrug campaign information. Role models who have recovered from drug abuse can be used as anti-drug abuse ambassadors to young people. Conclusion The battle against Alcohol, Drug and Substance Abuse is a complex and multifaceted challenge that requires collective efforts from individuals, communities and the government. Through prioritizing prevention, education and support systems we can work towards a future where substance use disorder is no longer a menace. A healthier and brighter future is only possible through collabora- tion and commitment whilst upholding the African spirit of unhu/Ubutntu. Onana has repeatedly been in the spotlight since United spent £47m on the 27-year-old this summer to replace David de Gea, and although it had been felt his form was improving in recent weeks, Wednesday's 3-3 draw against Galatasaray was a clear setback as he was at fault for two goals. Onana also made a mistake for a goal in United's Champions League defeat against Bayern Munich, but while he has struggled in Europe, Ten Hag pointed to the statistics that say Onana is second in saves made, save percentage and goals prevented in the Premier League. Burnley v Sheffield Utd "If you analyse it well then you see he is the second-best goalkeeper in the Premier League based on stats, so his expected defending goals is the second best in the Premier League," Ten Hag said. "He's doing well. Also he knows that in the Champions League he makes some mistakes but all over you see the first five months he is doing particularly well." Onana will face another major test on Saturday evening when United travel to Newcastle, who are on a five-game winning streak at St James' Park. But Ten Hag does not expect Onana to suffer any hangover from Wednesday night. "You have seen how he is reacting on a bad performance like in Munich," Ten Hag said. "At Burnley (three days later) he was outstanding. He is a strong character, he is a personality and he will deal with it." The Football Show team discuss whether Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag might look to replace Andre Onana after more mistakes in their Champions League match against Galatasaray Ten Hag: Mainoo has shown he's ready United said on Friday that left-back Tyrell Malacia, yet to feature this season after knee surgery, is on course to return early next year after requiring a second operation. Mason Mount was also back in training on Friday but there is no timeframe yet for the midfielder's return. Mount's absence has helped open the door for 18-year-old Kobbie Mainoo, who excelled in last weekend's 3-0 win over Everton at Goodison Park and was impressive again in Istanbul. "He showed on Sunday (at Everton) he was ready," Ten Hag said. "It looks like he always has time. "He is scanning, he is running free, he is scanning to see the options and make the right decisions. He can delay, can speed up, he makes the right decisions." Kobbie Mainoo had a debut to remember at Goodison Park, playing an instrumental role in Manchester United's 3-0 win over Everton last weekend Saturday's trip to the north east is a third straight away game for United, and another intimidating atmosphere after they faced an angry Goodison Park and the bear pit that is Galatasaray's Rams Park. "I really respect them," Ten Hag said of Newcastle. "It's a difficult team to play but it's a good challenge and I like to play against it. "We have to rise to the occasion, be our best against them because the way they play is very organised." United go into the game on the back of five wins in their last six Premier League games, having put a rocky run of domestic form behind them to close in on the top four. It stands in contrast to their European form, but Ten Hag believes performances have been good across the board. "On Wednesday, we played very good, also in Copenhagen," he said. "Even in Bayern Munich we played very good. But we have to do some things better. "Eliminate individual errors, defensive transition, but we can sort this out and I would be more concerned if we didn't play well."-Skysports.
