Cheza told Justice Mawadze at the High Court in Masvingo that of the 61 farmers settled at the same scheme, he is the only one who is being evicted. He said he was told that his eviction from the 125-hectare farm is to clear way for members of the Joint Operations Command, a structure that includes, the Army, Police and Central Intelligence. Cheza pleaded for an order to stop the Minister of Lands Agriculture and Fisheries from evicting him arguing that apart from being lawfully settled, he built green houses at the farm, sunk boreholes, installed a solar power system, has 105 cattle, 136 goats of an expensive breed, 56 sheep and employs 50 workers whose only source of livelihood is the farm. Cheza was represented by Nyasha Maguranyanga of Mutendi,Mudisi and Shumba Legal Practitioners. Analysts told The Mirror that the fact that Cheza is the only one being evicted by the Minister points to a disturbing fact that Zanu PF could be weaponizing the Land Act to victimize and harass opponents. Cheza was arrested and detained for several weeks during the August 2023 elections. The Constitution says all agricultural land belongs to the State and hence the President. This means the President can withdraw land from anyone anytime including those with title deeds as and when he desires. “There is no security of land tenure in this country whether one has title deeds or not. The President can gazette any piece of land and evict those settled there, it doesn’t matter whether its communal, resettlement or commercial farms. “In the case of resettlement it is just a question of withdrawing the offer letter and the land is taken over. No one owns land in Zimbabwe, no one has right to land in spite of the fact that people went to war to fight for the land. “If you get a vindictive party in power the land can be used to harass, victimize and cow opponents. In addition corrupt politicians can evict people from their land and give it to those that they like. This is very possible in areas that are close to towns where the demand for residential stands and town expansion is high. Land may be taken from the legitimate owners and given to friends to subdivide and sell as residential stands. “The media must watch closely the evolving evictions and the intentions,” said an analyst. Summarising his judgment, Justice Mawadze said that the land issue in Zimbabwe has become very emotive. “The land disputes in our country have remained a vexing and at times a very emotive subject,” said Justice Mawadze in the opening line to his judgment. He said Cheza’s eviction can only be stopped by the Minister himself and told Cheza to approach the Minister. He said the court found no merits in Cheza’s case in that he did not have any legitimate documents needed for him to have rights over the land. “No person may use or occupy gazetted land without a permit, offer letter or a land settlement lease,” said Justice Mawadze. Cheza however, said he had a letter called A confirmation of Land Occupation authored by the District Lands Officer for Mvuma. Justice Mawadze said this letter was nothing under the law. Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Lands Obert Jiri told The Mirror in an interview that Cheza did not have an offer letter from his ministry and added that the farm is already allocated to other people. He said that Government was not going to compensate him for the developments he made on the farm. US$200 000 up in smoke as Cheza is evicted Justice Garainesu Mawadze.

The Mirror: Ihwai nekuhwikwa Local news Page 3 01 - 07 March 2024 www.masvingomirror.com ELLEN MLAMBO MIRROR REPORTER MASVINGO – The Zimbabwe Gender Commission (ZGC) is on a decentralisation programme and on Wednesday senior staffers were in Masvingo to inform stakeholders of their new offices. The Masvingo offices opened doors in January this year and they are located at the Main Post Office. As part of informing stakeholders, ZGC management met Secretary for Masvingo Province and Devolution, Dr Addmore Pazvakavambwa. Before the decentralisation, ZGC had offices in Harare and it has now moved to Bulawayo, Gweru, Masvingo, Mutare and Mash West. Pazvakavambwa said gender issues are imperative in communities. He said statistics from the 2022 Population Census are frightening and of particular concern to him is the number of women who die while giving birth and girls who drop out from school especially at secondary level. “Some statistics results of the 2022 Population Census with regards to gender are frightening and shocking. I was shocked by the number of women who die while giving birth and the dropouts by the girl child at primary and secondary school levels. We have a lot of work to do together with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal on Gender Equality,” said Pazvakavambwa. Commission chairperson, Commissioner Margaret Sangarwe-Mukahanana said they saw it prudent to notify the Minister of State and introduce the staff members who will be working in Masvingo. “We saw it prudent to come to your office and inform you about ZGC’s presence in the city and introduce staff that will be based here. The issue of gender is very topical. Since the establishment of the ZGC in 2015, we were based in Harare. We had limited presence in Bulawayo and now Government has approved that we decentralise in the spirit of devolution. We have been allowed to decentralise to five provinces which are Masvingo, Manicaland, Mash West, Bulawayo and Midlands. We are now present in these provinces and we are excited about the development,” said Sangarwe. ZGC operates with programs that include governance and administration, finance, administration and human resources, gender equality promotion, legal services and investigations. ZGC Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Virginia Muwanigwa said the Commission is mirroring the key programs in its operations. The Director, Programmes, Caroline Matizha said the unit’s major responsibility is to monitor compliance with gender equality provisions and the international unit of framework of gender. “On gender equality promotion, the unit’s major responsibility is to monitor compliance with gender equality provisions and other international unit of framework on gender. We monitor both Government and private sector. For Government we do gender audits to get to know how different Government Ministries are mainstreaming gender in their programs, policies and projects. “Since we are now devolved, the selected ministries will be audited at provincial level. In the private sector, we have developed an M&E framework with indicators which cover different sectors of the economy. “We also conduct research into issues relating to gender and social justice mainly for the purpose of informing legal and policy reforms. We also issue advisory notes and various statements for government to address. One of our major functions is to increase awareness on gender issues. We also have community dialogues on different pertinent issues,” said Matizha. The Director of Legal, Complaints handling and Investigations, Letticia Fadzai Moyo said they are mandated by the constitution to investigate possible violations of rights relating to gender. “We are also mandated to receive and consider complaints from the public and to take action in regard to the complaints as it considers appropriate. We recommend prosecution for criminal violations of rights relating to gender. We also secure appropriate redress where rights relating to gender have been violated,” she said. Zimbabwe Gender Commission opens Masvingo offices Margaret Sangarwe-Mukahanana.

The Mirror: Ihwai nekuhwikwa Local news Page 4 01 - 07 March 2024 www.masvingomirror.com 071 689 5703 Chipinge Times & Two Nations Editor: Ellen Mlambo Editorial Comment GARIKAI MAFIRAKUREVA MASVINGO – A villager evicted from Mushandike Village 15B under the current Government run operation No to illegal settlers had to sell his Mazda B16 for US$200 in order to fend for his family which had to find lodgings elsewhere. This information was today relayed to a team from former CCC president Nelson Chamisa that was visiting displaced families in Mushandike near Bhuka some 20km from Masvingo. One of the over 200 evicted villagers in Mushandike Village 15B in Masvingo sold his Mazda B16 car for $200 to feed his displaced family and pay rentals in a nearby village. Some of the villagers settled in the area in the 80s. John Shiri one of the victims preferred to keep his neighbour’s name anonymous when narrating harrowing stories of the displaced families during a visit by the opposition outfit led by Nelson Chamisa dubbed the ‘Blue Movement’ today. The entourage that visited the area in solidarity with the victims was led by Amos Chibaya, Gift ‘Ostallos’ Siziba and Prince Dubeko Sibanda. They were accompanied by several other cadres of the Blue Movement from different provinces. According to Shiri, the victims of land evictions and demolitions are now faced with extreme hunger after they sold their livestock for as little as a dollar. Most of them allegedly bought the pieces of land from who is Chief Charumbira and Chief Bere’s aides. “Most people have been reduced to beggars as most of them sold their livestock hurriedly to beat the sevenday ultimatum. My neighbour sold his car for $200, while others sold their hens for a dollar and goats for $10. They are now tenants in the nearby villages paying rentals of up to $50. “We stayed behind for a while to wind up our projects. We have piggeries and fisheries here. This is the breeding time for fish and pigs, so we cannot relocate them,” said Shiri. Chibaya said that the visit was just a solidarity visit to empathise with them. “As a movement, we empathise with everyone who was affected by the wanton evictions and demolitions. We stand by you in these trying times,” said Chibaya. Evicted villager sells car Do unto others……….. for $200 to feed family What is happening at Cynthia Gold Mine in Shurugwi is deplorable to say the least. Here mine workers are being vetted by ZANU PF officials and anyone who is found to be linked to the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) party is being fired. The officials are punishing these workers for voting CCC councillors into office in the previous plebiscite and openly say that they should be fed by their own party and not by ZANU PF which is currently running the country. No comment from the highest echelons of the said party. Now this kind of behaviour does point to a repetition of what has been happening before when it comes to food and inputs distribution in the country. Right now the normal to below normal rainfall season is upon us as we have been experiencing relentless above normal heat. As it is it looks like most areas will get below normal rainfall which translates to a serious drought. Consequently many families will need food aid. Although the government is saying that we have enough food and no one is going to starve, the question is will the food actually get to everyone who will urgently need it? What assurance do we have that what happened at Cynthia Gold Mine is not going to happen when it comes to food distribution this time around? We have before witnessed opposition party members being denied food and inputs from the government by ZANU PF members who say they should get these from their own party. This has already become a habit hence what happened at Cynthia Gold Mine is not really surprising as it is a repetition of what has already been happening. Without talking about the right of every citizen to get assistance from the government of the day irrespective of political affiliation it is important to point out that a country and its resources do not belong to a particular political party. Parties come and go. Some people tend to think that their party will rule until forever. What they need to be reminded is that something like that never happened in the world and it will not start in Zimbabwe with ZANU PF. One day ZANU PF will definitely go and become an opposition party or even die a natural death to become nothing but history. When this happens will such people expect to get support from a different party government? Every citizen has a right to resources and services that a government should provide. ZANU PF as the ruling party should therefore ensure that its supporters do not deny opposition members what they are entitled to get from the country’s government. No wonder why we remain on the sanctions list. Amos Chibaya. Some of the villagers that gathered for the meeting.

The Mirror: Ihwai nekuhwikwa Local news Page 5 01 - 07 March 2024 www.masvingomirror.com Former town chair in court for corruption MIRROR REPORTER CHIREDZI – Former Chiredzi town chairman, Francis Moyo has been arrested for allegedly diverting 50 commonage stands to his personal use thereby prejudicing Government of US$60 000. Moyo was arrested by the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) on Thursday last week and he appeared before Chiredzi regional Magistrate Judith Zuyu facing criminal abuse of office charges. He was remanded out of custody to March 8, 2024. His arrest emanates from a Government investigation into goings-on at the local authority which resulted in a report titled Investigation Report on Chiredzi March – April 2016. Although submitted in 2016, the report was only released by Minister of Local Government and Public Works, July Moyo, last year after pressure from Boniface Mutemachani (65) of Hippo Valley Estates and Clemence Saidi (67) of 1742 Javangwe in Ward 6 who engaged lawyers Chadyiwa. The Mirror serialised the report last year. Moyo has since appeared at Chiredzi Regional Court on Friday facing charges of criminal abuse office. He was remanded out of custody to March 8, 2024. Moyo is being charged with abuse of duty as a public officer in terms of Section 174 of the Criminal Law (codification and reform) Act chapter 9: 23. He was reported to Police on January 23, 2023. The allegations are that Moyo was implicated in a scam in which 50 commonage stands were sold for US$60 000. The said Chiredzi Town Council submitted 50 high density stands (stand numbers 7851-7900) to the Ministry of Local Government as Commonage. The commonage stands were then allocated by the Ministry to Trinity Mutsetse after an application by his company, Inotrade Investments (Pvt) Ltd, on February 5, 2014 for housing development in Tshovani Township. It is alleged that the application was approved dubiously because there was no allocation memorandum from the State Land Management for approval by the Permanent Secretary. It is further alleged that Mutsetse, who allegedly had no financial capacity then roped in Justin Chauke Housing Cooperative which was the brainchild of councillor Moyo resulting in the area being referred to as ‘KwaFrango’. The agreement was that Inotrade would provide 50 stands to Moyo’s cooperative and in return Inotrade would become first choice supplier of services and construction materials. The stands were sold for US$1 200 disguised as registration fee and an additional US$95 being administration fee to people on Chiredzi Town Council waiting list despite that some were not members of the cooperative. The 50 stands were sold for US$60 000 and to date the Government suffered a prejudice of US$60 000 being the land intrinsic value. Moyo was a signatory to the housing cooperative’s CBZ main account 012824001170014. MIRROR REPORTER The anarchy in Zim's mining industry shows in the alarming fatalities due to accidents where 57 miners were killed in the Midlands Province alone in 2023 compared to just 40 across the entire USA and 55 across South Africa. These two countries employ hundreds of thousands of workers in their mines while the Midlands Province may not even have 10 000 workers. The high fatality rate is due to powerful politicians who are allowed to mine without compliance to mining safety regulations. A typical example is Zanu PF MP Scott Sakupwanya who continues to run rag-tag operations at Redwing Gold Mine in Manicaland despite damning reports and orders to stop by environmental organisations. Tens of workers have so far been killed at Redwing and some fatalities go unreported. Aljazeera investigations into gold smuggling in Zimbabwe alleged that the mining sector is dominated by powerful politicians including the First family. Zimbabwe has highest mining death in the world Scott Sakupwanya. Francis Moyo.

The Council Chairperson Shurugwi Town Council P O Box 125 Shurugwi The end is nigh Cde Minister Good fellas it has been a while. Well, I am back but with a sad story for one faction in The Gumbakumba Club. I don’t know how to start the story, I think MENE, MENE, TEKEL, UPHARSIN would do. I can see the writing on the wall. I think if I start with one of my late granny’s folklores that I felt was interesting, it would bring my point closer home. We used to gather around her to hear those stories that would jolt us from the world around us to the fantasy land. I know the story might be a legend and might have been told several times with different versions. The story was about two friends who were inseparable. They were the king’s aides, so they were competing for his attention. One day the King told them that he wants to give one of them a part of his kingdom to govern. The competition intensified and several shenanigans were employed to outdo each other. So, when the other one saw that his nemesis was getting some gifts and freebies from the wife of the king, he hatched a plan and started defaming his opponent throughout the entire kingdom. He was lying that his friend was cheating with the King’s wife. The rumour spread like veldt fire and everyone was speaking about it in hushed voices. This chit-chat went on for several months, and months turned into years until it reached the King’s ears. The King was so livid that he ordered his men to bring the hapless friend before him to answer the allegations. They searched his house and found some trinkets that he had received from the King’s wife as tokens of appreciation. They proudly brought them to the King and told him that the small items were given to the accused as love tokens. This angered the King who ordered that he should be killed. The King, however, said the best way to make him suffer for his sin was to kill him by depriving him of food. He was immediately whisked by the King’s men who whisked him away and threw him into a gaol. Several days passed and the effects food deprivation started to take its toll. The friend who had lied would surreptitiously visit him and pretended to sympathise with him. He noticed that his eyes began to sink in, and ribs were showing and his tummy looked like he was mummified. Although he wanted to fix his friend, he couldn’t take it anymore so he to the King and told him the truth. However, the King did not tell anyone that he had sentenced someone to death because of a lie. He only said he said he thought the guy had suffered enough. However, due to his guilty conscience the liar told his friend that he was the one who had caused all his suffering and asked for forgiveness. The friend just told him to gather a 50 kg of feathers and wait for a windy day and empty the sack while on the highest point. He told him to gather every feather after that and come back with the sack to him. I other friend said that is impossible and was told that is how the gossip about him has spread, and it impossible to take back all his words. That brings me back to reality. I am told Chitova went to Vene and lied that the Biller Code was the foot soldier of Boss Cader in the Province. Vene did not waste time and kicked Biller Code out of the Gumbakumba tent. However, someone told Vene that his right hand man was lying. He immediately told Chitova that he should give him concrete evidence. Chitova promised to bring an audio. As it turned out he failed to bring any. Vene is so furious accusing Chitova of lying to him. Now that Biller Code is out of the feasting tent, I heard Chitova tried to apologise but he couldn’t take it. Varimirana pamuganhu. Vene is threatening to relieve Chitova of his duties very soon. I am reliably told that the ink on the dismissal letter is so wet that they waiting for it to dry up before they deliver it to Cde Chitova. That it is why I can see the hand scribbling on the wall - MENE, MENE, TEKEL, UPHARSIN interprets as God has numbered the days of your kingdom and brought it to an end; you have been weighed ... and found wanting; and your kingdom is divided and given to the Medes and Persians.

The Mirror: Ihwai nekuhwikwa Page 7 01 - 07 March 2024 www.masvingomirror.com Special Feature on Disability ELLEN MLAMBO MIRROR REPORTER MASVINGO – Political violence is one of the biggest hindrances for participation of women with disabilities in politics (PWDs), Masimba Kuchera, a visually impaired consultant has said. Kuchera said fear of political violence, discrimination and accessibility of venues are the key impediments. Former Senator for PWDs, Nasper Manyau who has a physical disability reiterated the same and said women with disabilities keep away from active politics for fear of violence. He added that women are not spared from those challenges preventing PWDs from enjoying their rights to political participation. Kuchera decried the absence of a policy on a quota for PWDs as is provided for women and youth. "People with disabilities want to participate in political processes, they have membership with different political parties and they also want to be candidates but the issue of violence draws them back. We are also affected by discrimination from political entities themselves. We sometimes fail to access venues of important gatherings, access information and communication “People with disabilities are still peripherally involved especially when it comes to positions and decisions of influence where development is concerned. What should be noted is that we are not a homogeneous group, they are a combinations of people with various impairments,” said Kuchera. He called for a quota that will ensure reasonable inclusion in political processes. “There is no policy around the general elections that stipulate a percentage to which people with disabilities must constitute but there is the National Disability Policy which was launched by the President Emmerson Mnangagwa in 2021. The Policy envisages that people with disabilities must constitute 15 per cent of the participants in any program which include employment and political participation. Proportional Representation is 60 for women and they are also part of the ZEBRA system in the Senate which ensures women involvement. We also have the youth quota where each province yields one candidate. These quotas are silent on either women or young people with disabilities and as a result they are left out,” said Kuchera. Former Senator for PWDs and disability, activist Nasper Manyau who has a physical disability said women with disabilities tend to run away from participating in politics due to fear of violence. “As Women with disabilities we tend to run away from politics due to fear of violence. We also look at what our counterparts in politics who are able bodied face and fear for ourselves on how we may also be worse affected. We face both verbal and physical violence and that alone is stigmatization,” said Manyau. She added that political parties should field persons with disabilities and there should be something that binds them to equalize the participation to their able bodied counterparts. Manyau said women with disabilities who are involved in politics only constitute 0, 5% while those who stand to contest constitute less than 0, 2%. A female political activist with a chronological condition who preferred anonymity said she had on several occasions received death threats and in some instances she was attacked at her house. “As women with disabilities and political activists, the community suppresses us from participating in politics. We need to be given a chance to fight for what is ours and we know our rights enshrined in the constitution,” she said. Another female with disability, Rejoice Moyo told The Mirror that in most cases, women with disabilities who contest in politics don’t get votes as the community do not trust their capabilities. Violence shuts out women with disabilities from politics Nasper Manyau.

CG founder and director, Vimbai Chase told The Mirror in an interview that they want the centre to accommodate 3 000 PWDs and is appealing to well-wishers, donors and the business community to chip in with resources for the project. “We secured 10 hectares of land in Mashava and we want to construct our Beacon of Hope, a centre where PWDs are taught vocational skills as sewing, painting, and animal husbandry. “The centre will be like Danhiko Industrial Training College. Danhiko is now overwhelmed and cannot sustain the constituency. PWDs should be self-sufficient and not depend on hand-outs. We are sure that with these skills they will be able to provide for themselves,” she said. Chase added that the centre will also be home to PLWDs who are orphans. Tatenda Churu, who is a PWD applauded the initiative as it will allow them to be self sufficient and compete with other people in society. Ncube (aka Mudha) kicked out Sydney Mubaiwa (Mirror Midlands Bureau Chief) and Stephen Chadenga (Newsday) from a meeting organised by the Gender Commission and ordered them not to attend future Government engagements. The meeting took place at the Minister’s boardroom in Gweru on Tuesday. Ncube asked journalists to identify themselves and then singled out the two for representing newspapers that attack Government. He ordered them to stand up and asked his security to see them out. “Who invited you here?” he barked. “We are building the country and discussing Government business and you are not welcome here. You are not wanted at any other Government function,” he said. As if to spite journalists, he said to a local newspaper journalist, “Does your paper still exist? You can stay because your presence here doesn’t change anything”. Gender Commission chairperson, Margaret Mukahanana Sangarwe had invited the two journalists to the meeting ahead of the official opening of the organisation’s Gweru offices. Embarrassed Gender Commission officials apologised to the two journalists. Gender Commission Chief Executive Officer, Virginia Muwanigwa declined to comment when called by The Mirror. Zimbabwe Union of Journalists (ZUJ) president, George Maponga said journalism was not a crime. He said the Union will not accept segregation of journalists along private/public media lines adding that the Third Republic under Mnangagwa has been actively promoting Press Freedom. “ZUJ is disturbed by reports of private media journalists being chased away from Government programmes. “We want to make it clear that journalism is not a crime and all accredited journalists have a right to cover all events that are in the public interest. ZUJ will not accept any attempts to divide the media along private/public media lines,” he said added. He said barring journalists from public meetings runs against the Zimbabwe Constitution. MISA said in its statement that State and independent media journalists must enjoy equal rights in accordance with the Constitution. “All journalists should be afforded fair and equal access to information,” said a statement from a MISA official. Box 5 Zvishavane Tel: 08612002465 . . PASCAL MUROMBO There is an urgent need to reconsider the use of mobile phones to increase the involvement of women in smallholder farming. In Zimbabwe, women comprise the majority of smallholder farmers and are most affected by challenges such as food shortages, climate change, and poverty. Despite this, gender disparities in smallholder communities across Zimbabwe limit women's ability to address these challenges. One clear example of gender inequality is evident in farm decision-making. In rural communities, men typically take on leadership roles at the household level and extend their influence to make farmhold decision-makers. In contrast, women are often relegated to supporting roles with limited control over critical farm decisions. This imbalance impacts the quality of decisions and hinders effective responses to climate change, diminishing the potential for smallholder farming to be a viable source of livelihood in rural Zimbabwe. Urgent action is needed to ensure women play a more significant role in smallholder farming decisions. One promising approach is to leverage the widespread use of mobile phones in Zimbabwe. According to the firstquarter report of 2021 by POTRAZ, the telecommunications regulator in Zimbabwe, there were an estimated 13 million mobile phone users in Zimbabwe out of a population of 15.99 million, indicating that 81.3% of the population had mobile phones in 2021. Mobile phones, including non-smartphones and smartphones, are commonly used by women in smallholder communities. These devices come with various features, such as text messaging, voice calling, internet connectivity, and application compatibility, which can be harnessed to strengthen social networks among women and improve their access to financial services and markets. Mobile phone technology can strengthen social networks through text messaging and application compatibility functions. Women can use these features to create messaging directories, WhatsApp, and Facebook groups, transforming existing non-digital social networks like church groups, social clubs, and farmer support groups into digitally connected social groups. These platforms can facilitate real-time information sharing on seasonal farming updates, promote inter-generational knowledge sharing, and increase networking opportunities with diverse groups. Such digital social networks can empower women to develop climate change adaptation strategies at the household and community levels, making them critical participants in smallholder farm decision-making processes. Furthermore, all forms of communication, such as messages, videos, voice notes, and pictures stored in mobile devices over time, become micro databases that can serve as referral points when making complex farm decisions and developing household-level climate change mitigation strategies. Since women will be critical participants in these digital social networks, they will have direct access and control over these created micro databases, which will be a valuable resource in farmhold decision-making, making them an integral part of all decision-making processes and reducing the chances of them being excluded. Over the past decade, Zimbabwe has witnessed significant growth in the development and utilization of mobile money services, which hold great potential for advancing financial inclusion among marginalized groups such as women and smallholder farmers. Women in smallholder farming communities face numerous challenges that limit their access to and participation in traditional banking systems. Complex paperwork requirements, household chores, farm work, child-rearing, and physical bank branches located far away, among other challenges, lead to their limited participation in traditional banking systems. Mobile money services offer a solution to these challenges by enabling women to conduct financial transactions directly from their mobile phones, reducing the need to travel long distances to access banking services, and improving their participation in financial services. Mobile money wallets function similarly to bank accounts, allowing women to save earnings from selling farm produce and other activities. Transactions made through mobile wallets also establish a credit history for these women, increasing their credibility and improving their chances of securing loans from financial institutions that typically overlook smallholder farmers due to their lack of credit history. With mobile wallets and established credit history, women can leverage their financial resources to lead their households' financial decision-making. They can invest in cost-effective and sustainable agricultural inputs and allocate funds to develop household and community-level climate mitigation strategies. Women in smallholder farming in Zimbabwe face numerous post-harvest challenges, including mismatches with buyers, lack of supplier price information, profit erosion due to excessive intermediaries involvement, inadequate marketing, and failure to forecast demand. Mobile phones offer a solution to these issues. Essential mobile phone functions, such as the phone book and messaging system, can be repurposed as digital databases to collect and store customer information, such as phone numbers, which farmers often overlook during transactions. This collection of vital information can help build relationships with customers beyond transactions, fostering loyalty and enabling farmers to forecast demand, maintain direct contact with customers, and reduce reliance on profit-eroding intermediaries. The rise in smartphone usage in Zimbabwe has been met by the development of third-party mobile phone applications targeted at farmers. These applications perform different functions, including providing market price data, forecasting demand and supply, and matching buyers and sellers, among other tasks that can help farmers become profitable and competitive. Collectively, these mobile phone functions have the potential to empower women in smallholder farming, improve their household cash flow, and ultimately reduce poverty and their dependency on government subsidies. In conclusion, mobile phones represent a transformative tool for empowering women in smallholder farming, offering a pathway to greater financial inclusion, enhanced decision- making roles, and increased resilience in the face of climate change and market challenges. By leveraging the widespread use of mobile technology and developing tailored applications and services, women can improve their farming practices and market access and become critical players in household and community-level decision-making processes. To fully realize this potential, concerted efforts from governments, the private sector, and civil society are needed to promote mobile phone literacy, develop user-centric applications, and create enabling policies prioritizing women's participation in agriculture. Ultimately, empowering women in smallholder farming is about economic gains and advancing gender equality and sustainable development in Zimbabwe and beyond. As a result the suspects forged a deed for just one of the two stands living out the other, Magwere told Harare Magistrate Ethel Chichera during a the trial of Propser Bizwek (43) and Tatenda Shaft Wakatama (44) on Tuesday this week. Magwere said that former Education Minister, Mutumbuka initially bought Stand 184 Rolf Valley which is where the house is and then he bought an adjacent stand number 183 Rolf valley and brought the two together and got a consolidated certificate for the two. However, the suspects just dealt with a title for stand 184 and not Stand number 183 or the certificate of consolidation said the registrar. This means they only owned one stand and yet the property is consolidated. This, argued the registrar is conclusive evidence that the property belongs to Mutumbuka. Magwere also told the magistrate that title deed was digitally forged by the suspects. The duo is suspected to have worked with officials from the Deeds Registry. On June 22, 2021, the two, together with accomplices Jonah Ngome, Taurai Makata and Peter Chigayo who are still at large forged title deeds of house number 90, Harare Drive, Chisipite in Harare which is registered in Mutumbuka’s name to be in Ngome’s name. The Mirror: Ihwai nekuhwikwa Crime & Court news Page 20 01 - 07 March 2024 www.masvingomirror.com CRIME/TRAFFIC PUBLIC AWARENESS CAMPAIGN - TOWING OF VEHICLES Chief Inspector Paradzai Cephas Mudavanhu Masvingo Traffic Office-In-Charge Phone: +263 39 226 2979 Email: [email protected] The ZRP Masvingo Traffic, will today address a matter of ultimate significance of towing vehicles. It is crucial that we all recognize the potential risks and consequences associated with towing of vehicles. According to Section 69 of Statutory Instrument 129 of 2015 [Road Traffic (Construction, Equipment and Use) Regulations] states that no person shall drive on any road a motor vehicle towing another motor vehicle – •If the space between the motor vehicles exceeds four metres. When towing a vehicle, maintaining a safe distance between the towing vehicle and the towed vehicle is crucial for safety. Exceeding this stipulated distance can pose several dangers that include reduced stability as the longer the distance between the two vehicles can lead to decreased stability especially during turns or when encountering uneven surface; increased risk of jackknifing; limited visibility as the larger gap between the vehicles can obstruct the driver’s view; braking issues as the longer the distance between the two vehicles the increase in the braking distance making it difficult to stop the two vehicles in emergency situations among others. •If the net mass of the motor vehicle being towed exceeds the net mass of the towing motor vehicle. The additional weight of the towed vehicle can affect the handling and stability of the towing, especially during braking, accelerating or turning. Also there will be an element of increased stopping distance as more breaking force will be required to come to a stop, thus, increasing the risk of rear-end collisions or collisions with obstacles ahead. Furthermore, it increases overheating aspect as towing a heavier vehicle can cause the towing vehicle’s engine, transmission and braking systems to overheat, especially during long distances or when travelling on steep inclines. •Unless the motor vehicle being towed is so attached to the towing motor vehicles as to be under proper control. If towing equipment is not properly maintained or installed, it can fail while in use, leading to accidents or damage to the towed vehicle and the surrounding property. •If the motor vehicle being towed is loaded. Overloading or exceeding the towing capacity of the towing vehicle or trailer can lead to mechanical failures, such as transmission overheating or brake failure , increasing the risk of accidents. Sub-section 2 further notes that no person shall drive on any road any motor vehicle towing more than three trailers. Subsection 3 went on to add that no vehicle towing another vehicle shall exceed a speed of 30 km/h except where the vehicle being towed is connected to the towing motor vehicle by means of a rigid tow bar, draw bar or is craned. In summary, the ZRP Masvingo Traffic strongly urge all drivers to observe the towing requirements as stipulated by Section 69 of Statutory Instrument 129 of 2015 [Road Traffic (Construction, Equipment and Use) Regulations. Failing to adhere to towing legal requirements poses significant dangers and consequences, ranging from increased accident risks and mechanical failures to legal and insurance ramifications. It is imperative for drivers to understand and comply with towing regulations to ensure the safety of themselves and other road users. [Inserted by Masvingo Traffic Department] From page 1 dock, knocked down a male officer and after that he had just one last hurdle between him and his much sort after freedom. The hurdle, a slim built woman officer looked like an obvious underdog. But the tactical Chigwada allowed Makayi to go past her but just as he did, she latched at the escaping criminal’s belt from the back with both hands and had him slightly hanging in the air. She swiftly turned him around to face the direction from which he was running away. He could not remove his belt from the firm grip and the job was done leaving two stunned appeal judges, Justice Mawadze and Justice Sunsley Zisengwe with their mouths agape. Provincial Police spokesperson, Inspector Kudakwashe Dhewa confirmed the incident and hailed the 29-year-old officer for a job well done. Chigwada declined to comment to The Mirror and referred all questions to her bosses. Makayi had appealed against a twoyear jail term he was given by Beitbridge Magistrate Takudzwa Gwazemba in May 2023 for demanding and receiving a ZAR6 500 bribe from Kenias Mugabe. Makayi ran a racket with other Police Officers at Beitbridge Border Post. The Police officers at the border would approach an importer of a vehicle and offer to give him/her a cheaper temporary import permit (TIP). However, as the driver makes it out of the border post he would be confronted by another group of cops including Makayi who would arrest the motorist for having a fake TIP and they would demand R10 000 or they would impound the vehicle. In this case Mugabe did not have the R10 000 and Makayi drove the former’s car to collect the money from a relative. After getting the money from Nomatter Mahachi, Mugabe’s sister, the officers gave Mugabe back his car and allowed him to leave. However, the next day Mugabe reported the matter to Police and Makayi was arrested and convicted. He appealed against the conviction and sentence at the High Court in Masvingo. Gwanda Mayor sets penalties on property vandals CHIBHORANI TALK WITH SEKURU TAURAI Good day fellow Chibhoraniland country people. I do hope that I find you in good health, healthy and strong as a horse, kuita bhiza chairo parimire, mutakuramombe mbudzi ihata. Unfortunately not all of us will be as healthy as that. Quite a good number of us are sick and will get sick due to different causes and reasons, some unavoidable and some quite avoidable. These days our beautiful Chibhoraniland finds itself having to fight this deadly disease they call cholera that is making many people sick and has already claimed a good number of precious lives. Wanting to know more about the killer disease I asked Sekuru Google. You know kule Google, he is a fountain of knowledge, chitubu cheruzivo chisizivopwa. Here is what he had to say, “Cholera is an acute diarrhoeal infection caused by ingestion of food or water contaminated with the bacterium Vibrio cholerae.” Wow, never mind the big English and Latin medical words. After all Latin is a dead language, even deader than a dodo. Simply put cholera chirwere chemudumbu chinokonzerwa nokudya chikafu kana kunwa mvura ine hutachiona. What is important here is to know that cholera is caused or spread through eating food or drinking water that is contaminated. Although it is an easily treatable disease it is as deadly as the deadliest snake as it can kill within hours if it is left untreated, even in people who were previously quite healthy. However death from severe dehydration can be avoided using a simple and inexpensive rehydration solution. Why should we then have cholera killing numerous people in Chibhoraniland? Well Sekuru Google went on to tell me that ‘’Cholera is a disease of poverty affecting people with inadequate access to safe water and basic sanitation.’’ We have noted that there is cholera in Chibhoraniland. So it means that Chibhoraniland has countless poor people who are unable to access safe water and basic sanitation and therefore getting sick and dying from cholera. In rich industrialised countries modern sewage and water treatment have totally eliminated cholera but it still exists in Africa, Southeast Asia and Haiti. However, other factors that increase the risk of cholera include unplanned urbanization, conflict and climate change. These we certainly do have in Chibhoraniland. Now in view of these factors it is clear that one of the most effective and long-term solutions for the eradication of cholera lies in sustainable economic development. Poverty is killing us through cholera. Let us therefore totally eradicate poverty in Chibhoraniland, then we will eradicate cholera. A lot of Chibhoraniland citizens are walloping in poverty but trying hard just to put food on the table with some resorting to crime as well as spiritual and ritualistic methods. Government needs to visibly and consistently play its part in terms of poverty eradication. Currently with Vision 2030 approaching fast in the next few six years people are getting poorer and poorer and will consequently continue to get sick and die from cholera and other diseases. In 2017 a global strategy for cholera control; “Ending cholera: a global roadmap to 2030’’ was launched with the aim of reducing cholera deaths by 90%. At the rate at which people are getting poorer is Chibhoraniland going to reach this target and even go further? A question for thought and action. NdiSekuru Taurai, ndangoti ndizvitaure. Over 800 Chipinge villagers from Munyokowere and Mahachi are in court facing eviction from the land that their ancestors occupied since 1935. This is because according to the law all communal and agricultural land belongs to the State, it does not matter that one has title to the land. The 800 were dragged to court by Chipinge Rural District Council for settling on gazetted land. The villagers appeared before Magistrate Alfred Chinembiri this week. The State alleges that the villagers are unlawfully occupying and carrying out development on the land. Over 400 villagers from Munyokowere in ward 5 were summoned to court on February 10, 2024. Meanwhile the trial of villagers from Mahachi started on Monday, continued on Wednesday and was adjourned to March 11 2024. The villagers are appearing before the courts in batches and they were given free bail. Tariro Tazvitya of Bere and Brothers is representing the villagers on behalf of Professor Lovemore Madhuku. Chipinge RDC is represented by Robert Zirasha who is the Checheche Growth Point Sub-Office manager. Some of the elderly villagers facing evictions have been staying in Mahachi since 1935. The accused were served with eviction papers through ZRP.Villagers of Kondo in Ward 5 and Maunganidze in Ward 1 of Chipinge RDC are expected in court soon to answer to the similar charges. Organisations including the Platform for Youth and Community Development Trust are making efforts to intervene and save the villagers. Themba Dhliwayo prosecuted. Some students will no longer share as senior students will have one room per student. United Church of Christ in Zimbabwe (UCCZ) president Rev John Matiza commissioned a state of the art Mt Selinda High School girls dormitory built at a cost of US$70 000 on Friday last week. The school which has an enrolment of 934 and 414 of these are girls. "We will continue to capacitate our schools in line with modern trends. We cannot live in the past where girls would be in one room and in their hundreds," said Rev Matiza. Before the commissioning 47 Form 6 girls shared one dormitory with junior students Mt Selinda head, Phineas Mundeta, said he is happy because the dormitory is one way of ensuring quality education for the learners. "The commissioning of the girls' dormitory comes on the backdrop of excellent results at both 'O' and 'A' level. We got 90% and 98% pass rates respectively. Anne Mhlanga, the Deputy Head, said decongesting the boarding facilities was an ongoing activity. "We hope to continue on this trajectory where both boys' and girls' boarding are decongested for the learners to have more flexibility when it comes to studying. We have 414 girls in the boarding, and the new facility has a capacity to house 26 girls 20 of whom will share while the other six would be in single rooms," she said. Matron, Thelma Barauta is pleased with the way students would charge their laptops and iron their clothes without necessarily queuing for those facilities. "I am particularly happy with the ongoing decongestion for girls will enjoy more quality study time than before," she said. Primarily, the facility is for Form 6 girls. Ropafadzo Camilla Mubvuma, the head girl is ecstatic. She said decongestion brings more tranquillity to the students’ studies. On the same day, Team 88, a grouping of former Mt Selinda High School students who were there from 1985-1988, presented the retiring Combined Science teacher, Daniel Chapfiwa, with a token of appreciation. Chapfiwa retired in November last year. Team 88 was represented by Dr Zachariah Marinyame and Freedom Mutanda. "We extol the exploits of this great man. What we have given him may not be the sky and the moon, but it is an expression of our gratitude to this Science guru," Dr Marinyame said. Mr Chapfiwa said he was grateful for the gesture. "I am just happy. How can I forget my learners after almost four decades when I taught them. Thank you for the kind gesture," he said. His comments come after US President Joe Biden warned that Israel risks losing global support in the war. US officials say they are working on a possible ceasefire deal. In his statement on Tuesday, Mr Netanyahu said that, since the beginning of the conflict, he has been leading a campaign “countering international pressure to end the war ahead of time and mobilise support for Israel.” “We have significant successes in this area,” Mr Netanyahu added, citing a recent Harvard-Harris poll showing that 82% of the American public supports Israel. “This gives us more strength to continue the campaign until complete victory.” On Monday, Mr Biden said the US hopes to have a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in Gaza “by next Monday.” The US president also suggested later on that Israel could “lose support from around the world” if it “keeps up with this incredibly conservative government they have”. ‘Who will call me Dad?’ Tears of Gaza father who lost 103 relatives Hope for Gaza ceasefire by next week, says Biden Democrats brace for Gaza backlash in Michigan vote Another poll, from the Associated Press and Norc, found that about half of US adults in January believed Israel had “gone too far” - up from 40% in November. White House and State Department officials on Tuesday confirmed that negotiations on a temporary ceasefire were continuing, but declined to give details on the substance of the talks or potential timelines. John Kirby, the White House’s National Security Council spokesperson, said that “significant progress” had been made towards a deal last week to allow hostages to leave Gaza and let humanitarian assistance in. “We’re building on that progress this week and the president and his team remain engaged around the clock with multiple partners in the region,” Mr Kirby added. “But as the president said just in the last 24 hours or so there’s no deal as of yet. And there’s a lot more work to do.” The ceasefire, Mr Kirby said, would “hopefully” allow for a six-week pause, significantly longer than previous pauses in the fight. “Maybe that could lead to something more in terms of a better approach to end the conflict,” he said. At the State Department, spokesman Matthew Miller said that US diplomats - working with Qatar, Egypt and Israel - are “trying to push this deal over the finish line”, but that “ultimately, we would need Hamas to say yes.” A Hamas official had earlier told BBC News the group’s priorities were on ending hostilities, rather than the release of hostages. Israel launched a large-scale air and ground offensive in Gaza after Hamas gunmen killed about 1,200 people in southern Israel and took 253 hostages, some of whom have since been released. The Hamas-run health ministry in the Gaza Strip says at least 29,878 people have been killed in the territory since then - including 96 deaths in the past 24 hours - in addition to 70,215 who have been wounded. https://www.bbc.com

American Airlines said Thursday it had suspended its daily service between Miami and Toussaint Louverture International Airport in Port-au-Prince. “We will continue to monitor the situation with safety and security top of mind and will adjust our operation as needed,” spokesperson Laura Masvidal told CNN. Haitian airline Sunrise Airways told CNN that it suspended “all flights until further notice to ensure the safety of passengers, ground crews, and aircraft.” Rapid gunfire was reported in multiple parts of Port-au-Prince on Thursday. Shootings near the airport “caused damage to some aircraft and endangered users” of the domestic terminal, according to Sunrise Airways. Haiti has been gripped by a wave of unrest and gang violence in recent years. Warring gangs control much of Port-au-Prince, choking off vital supply lines to the rest of the country. Gang members have also terrorized the metropolitan population, forcing some 200,000 people to flee their homes amid waves of indiscriminate killing, kidnapping, arson and rape. Some 1,100 people were killed, injured or kidnapped in January alone, in what the United Nations called the most violent month in two years. More than 8,400 people were victims of such violence through last year, according to a report from the UN Integrated Office in Haiti (BIUH). Waves of crime and violence began to sweep across Haiti following the assassination of former President Jovenel Moise in 2021. Public frustration has mounted against Prime Minister Ariel Henry for his failure to put a lid on the unrest, especially after he failed to hold elections supposedly slated for last month, citing the escalating violence. On Wednesday, Henry told other Caribbean nations’ leaders during a regional summit that he would hold polls no later than August 31 next year, his first confirmation on when a vote will finally go ahead. The Mirror: Ihwai nekuhwikwa Page 23 01 - 07 March 2024 www.masvingomirror.com Religious News PART 2 In our previous teaching we laid a few blocks of our teaching( body of the subject(Understanding the gospel) and also highlighted a few salient facts concerning the gospel.. We established that the gospel is woven around four incontrovertible facts his(Jesus) death, burial, resurrection and ascension to the Father's right hand.. The gospel is over the top good news,it is good news too good to be true, too good to believe. It is a love letter. In the book of Acts of the apostles there are about 13 recorded sermons,a carefully study of all those sermons will lead one too see that the focus and emphasis was on one man Jesus Christ and what he did by his death and resurrection... Man are not saved by confession of sins, water baptism, church ordinances or rituals or reciting the sinner's prayer.. Jesus gave his body the church authority in his name to go and preach the gospel to everyone and everywhere.... Paul said I am not ashamed to preach the gospel of Christ for it is the power of God unto salvation to everyone who believe(Rom 1:16),so those who are saved are those who believe since the gospel is the vehicle which hands over man faith for salvation... We are not saved by our good works or acts of righteousness which we have done,we are saved by grace through faith...(Eph 2:8-9) one translation puts it this way, God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God. 9 Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it. The gospel announces that salvation is free and a grace gift. It is never a reward/merit or earned. The gospel announces the forgiveness of sins(2 Cor 5:18-19,Col 2:12- 14,Eph 1:7,4:32) Our acceptance into God's family(Eph 1:17,2:18-19) It reveals the unlimitless and depthness of the love of God which he demonstrated in Christ. The death of Christ is the definition of the love of God His sacrifice for ours sins is God's love paraded to the whole world. In loving the world God gave his Son to die our death as a payment for our sins therefore restoring us into a right standing and relationship with God.. Ps Trymore To be continued...
