Chinese national, Gong Changlin was allegedly dating Tafadzwa Maphosa, a local girl. Chengeto Pwaka, a detective at Bindura Central Police Station and her alleged accomplice Nicodemus Mubvumbi were arrested at Bikita Mineral on Saturday as they were allegedly trying to extort more money from the complainants. Magistrate Elizabeth of Masvingo yesterday granted Pwaka US$100 bail and ordered her to report at Bindura Police Station every Friday. The case was postponed to June 3, 2024. The court heard that on April 12, 2024 the two accused travelled from Bindura to Bikita Minerals Mine and told Changlin that it was an offence for a Chinese national to have a love affair with a Zimbabwean. Pwaka produced her Criminal Investigations Department (CID) card and Pwaka extracted US$2 000 from Changlin. On the same day Pwaka threatened to arrest Maphosa for allegedly aborting a pregnancy. She demanded US$700 and the money was sent to her ecocash. On April 30,2024 at Bikita Minerals, Pwaka and Mubvumbi exerted pressure on Maphosa by slapping her several times on the face and threatening to send her to jail. They were allegedly given US$250 and US$80 also sent through ecocash account 0773880313. Another US$2 000 was again paid to the accused. Accused persons collected a total of US$5030.00 from the couple. On May 18,2024 the complainants reported the matter to Police leading to the arrest. Pwaka was ordered to pay US$100 bail and the matter is under the CID Forensic Investigations Department. Gory rape: Bikita man forces self on 3 sisters Chinese forced to pay US$5k for dating Zim girl From page 1 Mukanga humiliated his victims, allegedly describing their private parts and telling the 30-year-old that hers was not tight enough to satisfy him. Mukanga allegedly started by raping the 16-year-old whom he made to bend downwards but he stopped and left her when she started screaming. He then went to the 30-year-old and raped her but complained that she was not tight enough and asked the number of children she had given birth to. He went back to the youngest girl and raped her. He then went for the 28-year-old sister who showed her a pad but he ignored her state and raped her. It is alleged that Mukanga raped the 28-yearold sister while she was bending down holding onto the shoulders of her 16-year-old sibling. He allegedly instructed the minor to take notes as he raped the older sister. After raping the three complainants, Mukanga allegedly raped the eldest sister for the second time and this lasted the longest before he freed the complainants to go home at around 10pm. Zimbabwe is a patriarchal society where abuse of women is taken lightly in many communities. One family in Gutu is currently demanding a review of two cases where two accused persons were acquitted for raping minors in Grade 1 and 7. The Grade 7 minor was infected with an STI. The family is convinced that the cases were swept under the carpet. Mukanga of Zindove Village and his alleged accomplice Thomas Hungwe (27) of Mayemu village both under Chief Mabika in Bikita are remanded in custody after appearing before Regional Magistrate Judith Zuyu last Thursday facing three counts of rape. It is alleged that on April 3, 2024, at around 5pm the three women were on their way home from Mukanga Business Center to Mugarare Village. The accused who were also at the business center decided to follow them on a motorbike ridden by Hungwe. Mukanga blocked the way of the three and threatening them with a knife, assaulted and ordered them to walk towards Garari Hill. Hungwe allegedly remained on the motorbike. The three were made to sit down and then Mukanga went about raping the sisters. Mukanga allegedly assaulted the eldest sister for not having a tight private part. During the trial, it emerged that Mukanga raped the three while Hungwe sat on the bike. Ronald Kwangwari prosecuted.

The Mirror: Ihwai nekuhwikwa Page 4 24 - 30 May 2024 www.masvingomirror.com DUMISANI KUFARUWENGA This is where it happened. The building was called Livingstone Hostel. Its Western wing. The place was Fletcher High School in Gweru, then a boys only school. It was in the mid eighties when Fletcher was still Fletcher, and when a stern Headmaster called Chivarange Chimombe ruled the roost. Twas the period when boys could have hope and could believe in future prospects which now don't exist. But I digress. This is how it happened. A boy, who will be described in this piece as Destroyer confronted onether boy called Chopper. Chopper is not his real name. Destroyer said: "Why are you going around saying you beat me up?" Chopper said:"Because it's true. I beat you up at the upper field a few days ago." And the fight started. Destroyer had the advantage of age, because Chopper was a year behind him. But Chopper was an athlete. He played basketball and tennis and was as crooked as they come. And the boys loved him. And at the same time hated his guts. The boys wanted Chopper to win and to lose. Either result suited them. To them, the fight was not about Destroyer, it was about Chopper. They formed a ring around the two protagonists, tense with excitement, their veins full of the adrenaline of malice and hate. And the fighters flew at each other with senseless rage, smashing each other with a barrage of bloody blows. The onlookers marvelled at the bloodletting with malicious delight. With malevolent glee. This is it! This is what their parents and the school authorities warned them against, and they were in its midst, and were themselves accomplices in the evil act itself; violence. It was irresistible. "Kill him! Kill him! They yelled at no one in particular, all too happy that either or both fighters could die. And Chopper threw a vicious left swing at Destroyer, strong enough to slaughter a horse. But Destroyer ducked under the blow in the nick of time and flew head first at Chopper's abdomen and the two fighters fell underneath a nearby bed, like an apple cart upset. Despite themselves, the onlookers cheered and jeered with delight. The bed under which the fighters fell was overturned, and the spectators could see Chopper sitting astride Destroyer, holding Destroyer's head, banging and smashing his face against the floor, spilling blood. Even the vociferous crowd of spectators who adored bloodletting was petrified. More petrified were they of the fact that Destroyer had the humiliating look of defeat on his face, the look of a man utterly destroyed, pleading for rescue and mercy. Even to them, this was inhuman and degrading. But no one moved and the bloodletting persisted. Until a long distance runner called John Ndlovu strode up to the fighters and tore them apart with quiet dignity and authority. And the fighters did not resist and went their separate ways. And the crowd of onlookers disappeared, with none of them willing to stomach and acknowledge the guilt of being a participant in the orgy of brutal violence. And I was there when it happened. Violence MIRROR REPORTER MASVINGO – Susan Mutero-Makombe, a prominent teacher for children with special needs and a devout Catholic has died. Makombe, born to the prominent Mutero family of Mutero Mission in Gutu died at Makurira Clinic at 3am today after complaining of chest pains. The Priest-in-charge at Saints Peter and Paul, Father Magundani announced the sad news during morning mass today and dedicated the evening adoration prayers for her. He said Makombe was a catechism teacher and was coming to teach children until a few weeks ago when her doctors advised her to take a rest. He described Makombe as a dedicated Christian. “She was quite well and we talked a few days ago. She was a dedicated Christian and always came to teach catechism to the children. Our prayers are with her as she joins the Kingdom of God,” said Father Magundani. Her daughter Tendai said her mother’s death came as a surprise because she was the one who prepared the evening meals. The Mirror: Ihwai nekuhwikwa Page 5 24 - 30 May 2024 www.masvingomirror.com GARIKAI MAFIRAKUREVA MIRROR REPORTER HARARE – High Court Judge Justice Sylvia Chirawu-Mugomba yesterday reserved judgment on an application for leave to institute a class action by a group of victims of an alleged Ponzi scheme, which was being run by a former honorary diplomat from the Asia who is also African Businesswomen Association (ABWA) CEO, Shamiso Fred. The five—Blaman Sekete, Grace Pumhu, Vimbainashe Mahwiridi, Dr. Ayanda Chakawa, and Felix Witness Mambondiani who are being represented by Jacob Mutevedzi of Clairwood Chambers, seek to recover millions worth of investments in which Fred is alleged to have milked the unsuspecting victims through a Ponzi scheme disguised as a collective investment focusing on egg production and dairy farming investment schemes. Advocate Regina Mabwe, who was briefed by Fred’s lawyer Rungano Mahuni of Mahuni, Gidiri Law Chambers, argued that the Joint Venture Agreement contains an arbitration clause, so the matter should be taken to an arbitrator, not the High Court. She also argued that the Joint Venture was a partnership, so all the parties should equitably share profits and losses. However, Advocate Reginald Mutero, who appeared together with Jacob Mutevedzi representing the five, argued that a court can only stay proceedings before it if arbitration is the dispute resolution method of first instance. He went on to assert that the arbitration clause should exclusively avail arbitration and not an assortment of other dispute resolution methods. In this case, the Agreement referred to mediation as an initial dispute resolution method, thus opening the door to the High Court to get involved. “In Shell Zimbabwe (Pvt) Ltd v. ZIMSA (Pvt) Ltd 2007 (2) ZLR 366, the court, per MAKARAU J, held that while courts are bound to give effect to arbitration clauses in contracts, they are only able to do so where arbitration is the expressed or implied first choice dispute resolution mechanism for the parties. “Similar sentiments were expressed by DUBE J in Chimedza v. City of Harare and Others HH 130/20. It is submitted that this arbitration clause does not oust the jurisdiction of the Court,” argued Mutevedzi. The applicants rebutted the argument by Fred that the joint venture amounted to a partnership. They argued that Fred had exclusive management of the project and owned all the assets. The Agreement expressly states that the investors are entitled to a specific monthly profit share. Even assuming it was a partnership, a partner can still be sued for specific performance of contractual obligations in terms of the “actio pro socio.” It is alleged that on different occasions, Fred entered into multiple contracts with various persons at an agreed capital contribution for business projects, which were to run for periods ranging from 22 months to 48 months. In return, the investors were each entitled to an agreed monthly profit share. Part of the heads of arguments reads: “WHEREFORE the Applicant prays for the relief sought in its application, persists with the points in limine raised in its Answering Affidavit, and prays for the striking out of the Respondent’s notice of opposition with costs on an attorney and client scale.” According to the application, if the present motion is granted, the applicants intend to issue notice to other potential claimants through publication in Zimbabwean newspapers and announcements on radio and television on three different dates. The most affected are people in the diaspora, particularly those based in the United Kingdom, who invested amounts ranging from $2,000 to $60,000. Among the investors are widows and elderly people who invested their entire life savings and lost everything. In November last year, Fred appeared before Harare regional magistrate Marewanazvo Gofa facing fraud charges and was granted US$500 bail. She was ordered to surrender her passport and to report once a fortnight at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Commercial Crime Division (CCD). GARIKAI MAFIRAKUREVA MIRROR REPORTER HARARE – A group of victims of an alleged Ponzi scheme, which was being run by a former honorary diplomat from Asia and African Businesswomen Association (ABWA) CEO, Shamiso Fred, have applied for leave to institute a class action in terms of Section 3 of the Class Actions Act [Chapter 8:17] against her and her business to recover millions worth of investments. The matter will be heard at the High Court tomorrow (Wednesday). Fred is alleged to have milked the unsuspecting victims through a Ponzi scheme disguised as a collective investment focusing on egg production and dairy farming investment schemes. The most affected are people in the diaspora, particularly those based in the United Kingdom, who invested amounts ranging from $2,000 to $60,000. The five—Blaman Sekete, Grace Pumhu, Vimbainashe Mahwiridi, Dr. Ayanda Chakawa, and Felix Witness Mambondiani—who are being represented by Jacob Mutevedzi of Clairwood Chambers, have made the application, which is going to be the first of its kind in Zimbabwe, after a breach of numerous Joint Venture Agreements between Fred and various investors across the globe. If the leave is granted, Mutevedzi is going to represent over 330 victims. It is alleged that on different occasions, Fred entered into multiple contracts with various persons at an agreed capital contribution for business projects, which were to run for periods ranging from 22 months to 48 months. In return, the investors were each entitled to an agreed monthly profit share. Part of the application reads: “This is a perfect case for the Court to grant leave to institute a class action so that justice for this class of investors can be achieved in one fell swoop as opposed to a crowd of plaintiffs seeking similar relief by way of separate actions. Efficiency is the major attraction, and nothing is more beneficial to the smooth administration of justice. “Therefore, there is clear commonality of issues, which makes it convenient to proceed by way of a class action. The questions of fact or law to be answered in resolving this dispute are more or less the same.” According to the application, if the present motion is granted, the applicants intend to issue notice to other potential claimants through publication in Zimbabwean newspapers and announcements on radio and television on three different dates. However, Fred’s recent actions have squeezed life out of President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s efforts to lure foreign investors with his “Zimbabwe is open for business” mantra, and Finance Minister Mthuli Ncube’s appeal to the diaspora population and foreigners to invest in Zimbabwe. The diaspora has lost confidence and is now skeptical that its investments will pay off. The government held a Zimbabwe Investment Summit last week in South Africa to positively sell the country to the world. The price now awaits Ministerial approval. Cotton buyers include Cotton Company of Zimbabwe (Cottco), Zimbabwe Cotton Company (ZCC), Shawasha, Agri Value Chain and others. Apart from the price, farmers will be paid for their deliveries on the spot and there will be payments backdated to the last three seasons. “We have 420 000 cotton farmers and this year we met all buyers and agreed on a price. The initially proposed price was $0.20 per kg and we settled on US$0.32 per kg. “There is also a condition that buyers should backdate payments for the last three seasons before we sell this year’s produce and this must be done by 30 May. “We also agreed that they make full payments on spot and if they do not pay on delivery we hold our crop until we get the payment,” said Chigaba. She told a master plan validation meeting held at Shurugwi Town Council boardroom yesterday that illegal miners have destroyed all recreational facilities and polluted water bodies. Among the facilities is the once famed multipurpose Peak Mine Stadium that gave rise to many of the country’s famed athletes. “There is need for a vocational training centre and recreational facilities since all of them have been run down by mining activities. Railway block Golf Course and Peak Mine Stadium has been invaded by miners. “Ground water that residents relied on has been contaminated by chemicals from the mining activities. The water is no longer suitable for human consumption, watering crops or livestock consumption. Pit latrine toilets are also affecting ground water,” she bemoaned. Shurugwi Town Council Housing Director Fortune Marevesa said the town does not have room for expansion and will incorporate surrounding farms. “The town doesn’t have room for expansion. We are working towards incorporating surrounding farms as Bester, Magakushla and Adare into the town. We need room to expand the town," said Marevesa. Residents who attended the meeting complained that most land in the mining town is owned by mining companies and these companies have been known to evict them from their houses. War veteran Isaac Chibendere said the town is facing a critical shortage of land for development because Zimasco has laid claim to the land. "There is a map detailing that about 75% of the land in Shurugwi is owned by Zimasco. The land includes public amenities such as Peak Mine Stadium and golf courses. He told The Mirror during a tour of the 847, 5 hectare scheme last Thursday that 225 hectares have already been cleared for planting. Of these, 14.5 hectares have already been planted. The tour was done during the Provincial Winter Wheat Seminar where farmers discussed issues affecting them with stakeholders including the Ministry Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development. “We planted 355 hectares last season and harvested an average of three tonnes per hectare because our plants were affected by the soaring tempera- tures. This season we are expecting five tonnes per hectare,” he said. The winter wheat planting season com- menced on April 25 and ends on May 30. President Emmerson Mnangagwa has said that in this period of the El nino induced drought, food security in going to be wheat based and hence we need more wheat. We have a competitive and comparative advantage of growing wheat than any other crop,” he added. The scheme draws water from Mushandike Dam and constitutes of 565 farmers from 13 villages. “Farmers are preparing for winter wheat season and village 15 has so far prepared 21, 5 hectares out of 28, 5 hectares. Some of the challenges we are facing include that our water source, Mushandike Dam has a small catchment area and cannot contain or harvest a lot of water whenever it rains. The Mirror: Ihwai nekuhwikwa Page 18 24 - 30 May 2024 www.masvingomirror.com International News South Africa elections: what are the issues and will ANC lose its majority? South Africans go to the polls on 29 May in elections in which the ruling African National Congress party could lose its majority for the first time since it swept to power in 1994 after the end of apartheid. Chronic unemployment, inequality, power cuts and corruption have contributed to a haemorrhaging of support for the ANC, which won the 2019 election with 57.5% of the vote. Who are the ANC’s challengers? The ruling party is battling against established opposition parties such as the economically liberal Democratic Alliance (DA) and the Marxist-inspired Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF). It is also being challenged by upstarts such as the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) party, led by the former president Jacob Zuma, who is bitterly opposed to the current South African leader, Cyril Ramaphosa. Polls have consistently shown the ANC getting less than 50% of the vote. A telephone tracking survey by the Social Research Foundation had it on 44.1% of the vote in a 60% turnout model this week, compared with 39.1% a month earlier. Some analysts think the ANC could still scrape a majority, noting that phone polls often have significant flaws, including underestimating ANC support in rural areas where many poorer votes do not have phones. Why are these elections important? South Africans voted Nelson Mandela and the ANC into office in 1994 on a wave of hope. Thirty years later, the mood is bleak. More than four in five adults said the country was going in the wrong direction in a 2022 survey by Afrobarometer, a non-profit African research network, 10 percentage points higher than 18 months earlier. The ANC losing its parliamentary majority would mark a tipping point for a party that, especially for older and rural voters, still carries the halo of liberation. If it gets more than 45% of the vote, it may be able to form a coalition with smaller parties and continue policies such as trying to end power cuts. But if it gets closer to 40%, it may have to share power with the DA or EFF, which could mean radical policy changes. What are the key issues? The lack of jobs is the most pressing issue for South Africans. Almost a quarter of adults told Afrobarometer that joblessness, which has deepened the poverty and inequality that stalk the country, was the most important problem for the government to address. The unemployment rate hit almost 33% this year, more than 10 percentage points higher than in 1994, with almost half of young people out of work. South Africans are also fed up with scheduled power cuts known as load shedding, violent crime – South Africa has one of the world’s highest murder rates – and corruption. What have the parties pledged? The ANC has promised to learn from its mistakes and warned that “forces” are seeking to undo South Africa’s democratic progress. It has pledged to create 4 million “work opportunities”, introduce national health insurance and a basic income grant, and tackle corruption and illegal immigration. The DA, the biggest opposition party, has campaigned on the slogan “Rescue South Africa”. Its promises include lifting 6 million people out of poverty and creating 2m jobs, as well as a “balanced approach” to privatising state-owned companies. Many black South Africans see the DA as favouring the interests of white people. The EFF argues that apartheid did not end in 1994, saying the democratic settlement left the economy in the hands of “white monopoly capital”. It wants to expropriate land without compensation and nationalise companies, including banks and mines. Zuma’s MK has similarly leftwing economic policies, but dates South Africa’s “prolonged period of national shame” back to 1652, when the first Dutch settlement was established. It also wants to move from constitutional democracy to parliamentary supremacy and to increase the powers of traditional leaders. How will the elections work? Almost 28 million South Africans are registered to vote in national and provincial elections, less than half of the 62 million population. The 400-seat national parliament will vote for the president no later than two weeks after election day. There is no constitutional process for forming a coalition government. South Africa uses a system of proportional representation. Voters get three ballots – two for the National Assembly, each allocating 200 seats, and one for their provincial legislature. One of the national ballots will only have political parties on it. The second will be for one of nine multi-member provincial constituencies. Magistrate Mugwagwa exonerated him for lack of evidence linking him to the robbery. She also said the State had overwhelming evidence that Mapfumo and Lizhu collaborated the robbery. She also ordered that US$18 780 that was recovered should be returned to Fawcetts. The robbery happened on November 25, 2021, near Connemara Open Prison in Gweru along the Harare- Bulawayo Highway. They then force marched Mapfumo and Chisambasi to the back of the vehicle and tied their hands and legs. One of the accused persons then drove the cash-in-transit vehicle into a nearby bush. Moyo then phoned his superior Israel Mberengwa who was at the company’s Bulawayo office and informed him that they had been robbed. Police investigations later reviewed contradictions in Mapfumo’s statements leading to his arrest. He initially told Police that they were robbed at a roadblock and later changed his statement to implicate Lizhu and Moyo. Prosecutor Vivian Chindedza said the robbery was premeditated. MUGARI As African countries unite to celebrate Africa Day, there is need to reflect on Africa’s resilience, strengths, rich cultural heritage, and diversity. However, secret storms of mental health issues are brewing behind the long abandoned sound of the African drum. There is an urgent need to take the mental health bull by the horns through embracing an Afrocentric model. Mental health is a basic human right which is vital for personal, community, and national socio-economic development. It is an important component towards the creation of a robust, pacific, and prosperous world. Consequently, it is imperative to decolonize mental health in Africa to move towards a Pan-African model which strengthens sovereignty, and integrity towards achievement of African development goals as outlined in Agenda 2063. In the western world, mental health is often perceived mainly as a personal issue, rather than a societal issue. In contrast, through African lenses, mental health is intricately linked to the social, economic, religious, and political systems. Trauma, poverty, chronic diseases, and social injustice take a toll on mental well-being of every community. Consequently, mental health issues such as increased substance abuse, suicide, depression, social isolation, violence, broken homes and poor productivity escalate. There is an urgent need to serve from the nourishing African pot filled with culturally relevant resources needed to bridge the prevailing mental health gap. The African ancestral wisdom promotes social justice, community-centred care, empowerment, and prevention of mental health problems. Furthermore, it promotes connectedness with other people, with ancestors, and the environment. Such decolonized approach to mental health inclines towards collective healing whist preserving cultural identity and traditions. Mental health models in African countries must be reflective of the historical struggles such as slavery, colonialism, apartheid, systemic oppression, displacement, and related historical trauma. A critical mass of African scholars and policy makers must therefore spearhead the development, nurturance promotion of relevant Afrocentric mental health models. Such models must value Decolonising Mental Health: Ubuntu in Action To page22
The Mirror: Ihwai nekuhwikwa Health news Page 21 24 - 30 May 2024 www.masvingomirror.com By Catherine Murombedzi in Goa India Health Correspondent The clock is ticking. It is only 79 months to 2030. The motto: "Ending TB by 2030" is off track. It requires an accelerated response to finding all tuberculosis patients. The above messages resonates with participants from 34 countries to A Call to Action United Against TB, Accelerated Action Towards Achieving SDG on TB. The three-day meeting brought together researchers, medical doctors, communities, TB survivors, health experts, authorities in the medical field, distributors, and the media to the resort town of Goa, India. Ending TB requires bringing the diagnostic tools to the people. Only after a correct diagnosis can a disease be treated. A patient goes to hospital; science today brings the hospital to the patient. We are so used to taking patients to the health facility. If we are to end TB, it must be business unusual. With science and innovation ushering in artificial intelligence (AI), human beings have to embrace technology for better outcomes. Medical teams have to bring effective diagnostic tools to the people. Find All TB Patients and Treat All TB Patients. This is the only sure way to prevent any further spread of infection. Treatment should be people centered. It should also observe rights to health and dignity. No place is hard to reach if we care enough to reach it. This is a testament to the islets of Bantayan in the Philippines. Dr Samantha Tinsay, a medical doctor working for the Municipality of Bhatayan, gave an inspiring insight into their never dying spirit in the fight to end tuberculosis (TB) in Bhatayan With beliefs of witchcraft rife, seeking treatment is at times delayed. "Being off mainland becomes a barrier as patients have to use boats to cross over to health facilities. "Bhatayan is off mainland, health staff carry the equipment in pump powered boats. Relying on mother nature, at times, the sea is not kind. We have to travel during the high tide, which can even be at midnight. It enables us to move quicker. At times, there are storms, and we have to delay going back. In one instance, the mayor was very worried. We could not come back on time. The Coast Guard was looking for us. It took us four hours to cover a 30-minute journey. The mayor kept calling on the phone. Working in Bhatayan requires dedication to serve. We have to bring the service to the people. On arrival in the evening, we have to set up our temporary unit. We start with health talks, screening, and counseling, all given on site. When diagnosed with TB, one is educated again and commences on treatment. Test and treat is bringing out positive results. We are grateful for the support from USAID in our pilot program in 2022," said Dr Tinsay. In the Philippines, Fujifilm ultraportable X-ray and Molbio’s Truenat are being taken from islet to islet in Bantayan municipality. The test and treat success story is one of the TB best practices. The ultra portable X-ray machine is battery-operated. It is independent from the need of a laboratory. It breaks down barriers in treatment as the point of care is brought to the people. A mobile clinic, it's the novel molecular TB testing using Truenat. "Living in an archipelago, it is not easy to traverse from island to island, from one boat to another smaller boat, walking when the boat can't make it, during the typhoon season, we still work. Despite the vagaries of the weather, we have surpassed our targets of TB screening. Bhatayan is made up of 25 townships. Using new tools, in November 2023, we screened 1000 patients in one month. Where the traditional X-ray screened 364 at our partners facility, the portable tools screened 2784. We surpassed our target of 1544. Patients don't pay in Bhantayan, the government pays our partner for the services. The municipality also purchases some medicines to complement government efforts," said Dr Tinsay. With the aim of leaving no place and no one behind, she leads a team to bring screening, diagnosis, and treatment right into the community. A one-stop-shop The Philippines' national treatment success rate was 80% as per (WHO Global TB Report 2023). TB services have also been made an integral part of a broad range of healthcare services provided by Bantayan Rural Health Unit, such as HIV counseling, testing and treatment, mental health, immunization, vaccination, family planning services, among many others. Globally, an alarming number of TB prevalence surveys have shown that a large number of people with TB are asymptomatic where the X-ray will not diagnose, and the use of Truenat overcomes the challenge. Correct diagnosis for effective treatment outcomes can see Ending TB a reality. Feedback: cathymwauyakufa@gmail. com Reaching the unreachable; accelerating efforts to end TB by 2030
The Mirror: Ihwai nekuhwikwa Health news Page 22 24 - 30 May 2024 www.masvingomirror.com From page 20 cultural contexts and complexities such as collectivism, community based-evaluations, emotional intelligence, as well as practical problem solving. It is high time ancient African healing practices and cultural beliefs are developed and adopted as evidence based models for mental health care. Music and dance have been a source of individual and community therapy in African communities for centuries. During the liberation war in Zimbabwe, freedom fighters used this ancient power of music to boost morale, cultivate cultural pride as well as a source of healing and comfort. Regardless of this clear background, it is worrying to note that the current mental health models in Africa were imported or imposed. Most of these models were set up by colonial institutions making them difficult to fairly and effectively apply to indigenous Africans. Community mental well-being will continue to be a moving target as long as western designed mental health models are employed to solve African mental health issues. Indigenous languages, religion, tradition, gender roles, family, and geography must influence mental health models. Currently, there is an apparent lack of African research voices in many core mental health academic publications, guidelines and reports. The recently introduced Heritage-Based Curriculum in Zimbabwe (2024-2030) is a significant milestone towards decolonizing mental. Its key aspects promotes mental wellbeing and critical thinking through respecting cultural identity, value national history, respect for traditional religions and heritage sites, and emphasis on Ubuntu among others. Afrocentric mental health models must recognize the importance of cultural sensitivity, community engagement, and social justice. Mental health has always been deeply entrenched in African culture, tradition, religion as well as social organization for centuries tracing back to pre-colonial era. However, westernization has left Africa prone to cultural erosion and reliance on biomedical approaches. Additionally, it has left a great scar of inferiority complex which makes most Africans think that white is a sign of purity and black a sign of evil. There is therefore an urgent need to decolonize mental health to restore Afro pride. Initiatives in Zimbabwe such as the “Friendship bench” have shown great progress towards promoting community mental health. Such community-based initiatives make use of trained community lay workers to provide mental health support and therapy at grassroots level. The initiatives have significantly transformed the treatment of less severe mental health problems in cost effective and culturally appropriate ways. They have also contributed towards the prevention of severe mental health problems through identifying and addressing risk factors such as drug and substance abuse at community level. Undiagnosed and untreated mental health conditions usually create negative long-term impact. Correspondingly, the introduction and expansion of the community radio stations initiatives and local newspapers is helping to promote community mental health. This is being achieved through providing accessible and relevant mental health resources to communities. The community radio stations have significantly improved the self-esteem, resilience, and psychological sense of community especially for marginalized communities. Additionally, they are helping to promote cultural identity which is under severe threat from western media. While the West tends to deride traditional healers or faith leaders, it is these people who have a stronghold on the greater population in Africa. They have the potential to derail or revolutionize mental health care in Africa. This sector must therefore be mainstreamed in the mental health care model as paraprofessional since they can often be the first point of care. Maximising on the experience and influence of faith leaders and traditional healers will yield positive results in community mental health programs. Mainstreaming mental health services in other funded programmes such as emergency response, maternal health, and education can help to make them more accessible at lower costs. Given the huge demographic transition in Africa, mental health issues must be integrated into all programmes, and sectors. Specific target must be given to young people as a special demographic group. Involving young people in the planning and implementation of mental health services is crucial to ensure the relevance and responsiveness of these services to their unique needs. Through culturally informed programs such as the Zimbabwe First Lady, Auxillia Mnangagwa’s Nhanga/Gota/Ixhiba initiative, young people will be equipped with life skills. This is done in preparation of complexities of adolescence, adulthood, marriage and world in general. Such complexities are threats to community mental health. Mental Health funding must also shift from psychiatric institutions in favour of community-based care, and social interventions thereby reducing the mental health stigma. This will ensure that people living with mental illnesses are not held in long-term institutions such as Ngomahuru or Ingutsheni. However, they are supported to live and thrive within their own communities. Institutionalization is a Western approach which is alien to the African culture of Ubuntu. Social support is a key facilitator for resilience, and recovery from mental illnesses. Social support is rightly recognised as strong in many communities in Africa, though the process of rapid urbanisation is disrupting traditional support systems. In conclusion, Africa Day serves as a reminder that there is great need to adopt a decolonial approach to mental health. African Policy makers, researchers, media, traditional, and religious leaders must push towards mental health models that honour cultural diversity, social resilience, and collective humanity whilst being informed by their rich cultural heritage. The interconnectedness of individuals, families and communities must be the cornerstone of a supportive ecosystem for mental wellbeing. Such collaboration will create an environment where community and individual mental health is cherished, leading to the attainment of national, regional, and global development goals. The Mirror: Ihwai nekuhwikwa Page 25 24 - 30 May 2024 www.masvingomirror.com Religious News Ps Trymore Dzobo You can’t claim Christian growth without service. The very foundation of faith is service. God became a man to serve His crea- tion. If you don’t give up pleasures, glory, pride, and treasures you can’t claim to be serving. Let us examine the following scriptures: Ephesians 4:11 And His gifts were [varied; He Himself appointed and gave men to us] some to be apostles (special messengers), some prophets (inspired preachers and expounders), some evangelists (preachers of the Gospel, traveling missionaries), some pastors (shepherds of His flock) and teachers. 12 His intention was the perfecting and the full equipping of the saints (His con- secrated people), [that they should do] the work of ministering toward building up Christ’s body (the church). (Ampli- fied Bible) The work of pastors (Christian leaders generally) is to raise more servants! More people in the service of serving others- The Body of Christ. This service isn’t in positions, though positions could be formally defined. This service is in the work. Matthew 20:25 And Jesus called them to Him and said, You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great men hold them in sub- jection [tyrannizing over them]. 26 Not so shall it be among you; but whoever wishes to be great among you must be your servant, 27 And whoever desires to be first among you must be your slave— 28 Just as the Son of Man came not to be waited on but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many [the price paid to set them free]. (Amplified Bible) Ministry is to serve others. The Greek word for service and servant (Greek is the original language of the New testa- ment) translates it as synonymous with the waiter at the restaurant. He takes your orders. Pastors must be seen as raising servants in their teaching and by example. Let us hear Jesus again. John 13:4 Got up from supper, took off His garments, and taking a [servant’s] towel, He fastened it around His waist. 5 Then He poured water into the wash- basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to wipe them with the [servant’s] towel with which He was girded. 6 When He came to Simon Peter, [Peter] said to Him, Lord, are my feet to be washed by You? [Is it for You to wash my feet?] 7 Jesus said to him, You do not understand now what I am doing, but you will understand later on. 8 Peter said to Him, You shall never wash my feet! Jesus answered him, Unless I wash you, you have no part with (in) Me [you have no share in companionship with Me]. 9 Simon Peter said to Him, Lord, [wash] not only my feet, but my hands and my head too! 10 Jesus said to him, Anyone who has bathed needs only to wash his feet, but is clean all over. And you [My disciples] are clean, but not all of you. 11 For He knew who was going to be- tray Him; that was the reason He said, Not all of you are clean. 12 So when He had finished washing their feet and had put on His garments and had sat down again, He said to them, Do you understand what I have done to you? 13 You call Me the Teacher (Master) and the Lord, and you are right in doing so, for that is what I am. 14 If I then, your Lord and Teacher (Master), have washed your feet, you ought [it is your duty, you are under obligation, you owe it] to wash one another’s feet. 15 For I have given you this as an exam- ple, so that you should do [in your turn] what I have done to you. 16 I assure you, most sol- emnly I tell you, A servant is not greater than his master, and no one who is sent is superior to the one who sent him. (Amplified Bible) This is no mystery. No mystic beliefs. It’s an age-long practice of service. Whom you serve, you hon- our. Jesus teaches service here. He laid aside his garments. He was naked. He stripped Himself of all glory. He laid aside his position in His office. His fat pay check. He put down his wealth. His background. His pedigree. He bends. He is down at the feet of His disciples. He is showing them He values them just as God does! Paul teaches this too. Philippians 2:1 So by whatever [appeal to you there is in our mutual dwelling in Christ, by whatever] strengthening and consoling and encouraging [our relationship] in Him [affords], by whatever persuasive incentive there is in love, by whatever participation in the [Holy] Spirit [we share], and by whatever depth of affection and compassionate sympathy, 2 Fill up and complete my joy by living in harmony and being of the same mind and one in purpose, having the same love, being in full ac- cord and of one harmonious mind and intention. 3 Do nothing from factional motives [through contentiousness, strife, selfishness, or for unworthy ends] or prompted by conceit and empty arrogance. Instead, in the true spirit of humility (lowliness of mind) let each regard the others as better than and superior to himself [thinking more highly of one another than you do of yourselves]. 4 Let each of you esteem and look upon and be concerned for not [merely] his own interests, but also each for the interests of others. 5 Let this same attitude and purpose and [humble] mind be in you which was in Christ Jesus: [Let Him be your example in humility:] 6 Who, although being essentially one with God and in the form of God [pos- sessing the fullness of the attributes which make God God], did not think this equality with God was a thing to be eagerly grasped or retained, 7 But stripped Himself [of all privileges and rightful dignity], so as to assume the guise of a servant (slave), in that He became like men and was born a hu- man being. 8 And after He had appeared in human form, He abased and humbled Himself [still further] and carried His obedience to the extreme of death, even the death of the cross! (Amplified Bible) We are to know to treat others as im- portant. That is the foundation for service. Some were "serving" in churches when they were young, weren’t rich, hadn’t gotten lucrative jobs etc., and suddenly stopped when wealth surfaced and worldly positions came. Then they stopped serving. Truth is... THEY NEVER SERVED! You can’t be humble when there’s nothing to lose, give up or lay aside. Humility is the key to Christian service. Just like Jesus, we are not acting our age, social status, earthly positions, or intelligence. We lay it aside and become waiters! Servants! Sometimes in Church we have made heroes out of men of influence and clout. When they give testimonies of the contracts and their newly-acquired possessions we think such is the Kingdom of God! They ONLY become our models when they SERVE! 1 Timothy 4:12 Let no one despise or think less of you because of your youth, but be an example (pattern) for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, and in purity. Hope this is clear? I choose to serve in God’s house. I choose to be humble! Jesus is Lord,We win! [email protected] +263774740407 Service is the proof of growth The late Reverend Ganyau CONDOLENCE
BY FR ISIAH DHLIWAYO God is real ,nomatter how you feel. The Bible tells us God's presence is every- where and He is with us, yet we can still struggle to understand He is near us at all times. Sometimes it feels like God is far away – that He is no closer than a distant planet. God's holiness and maj- esty can make us think He is not within reach. It is easy to worship God when things are going great in your life- when he has provided food ,friends , family, health and happy situations. But circumstances are not always pleasant. We will always feel far from God when we ignore Him, live independently from Him or rush about expecting Him to tag along. And while our humanness falters between spiritual times of plenty and times of want, feeling near to God is always just a whisper away as we acknowledge His presence with us. My question to many of us is ",What do you do when God seems a million miles away?". Has this ever been your experience? You know the heavenly Father is real. You know he is good. You know he loves you. Yet there are times when God seems to be in a frame. It feels that God does not hear your call, see your need, or feel your pain. God seems far away. Through the testimony of men fully human who recorded the message of God's love and care in the pages of the Bible. They tell us precisely how far away God is: He's as close as our heart cry but as far away as our unbelief and our refusal to trust Him. To experience some things, you must take them by faith. Psalm 61 is ascribed to David. But we do not know when he wrote it. Verse 2 says: “from the end of the earth I call to you.” Verse 4 says: “Let me dwell in your tent forever!” These statements suggest that David is exiled from Jerusalem and the tabernacle. Commentators assume David wrote this psalm when he fled from Absalom his son. It has also been considered a song David wrote as he returned home from exile. We do not know. It is not meant for us to know. The point of the psalm is not found in the historical circumstances David faced. It is found in the spiritual condition Da- vid experienced. Whatever his geography, David was at a place where God seemed far away. He wanted more than a return to Jerusalem or another opportunity to worship in the tabernacle. He longed for a greater sense of God’s loving presence, protective care, and strengthening grace. So he prayed that distance would be transformed into intimacy. In so doing, David shows us what to do when God seems far away. In a word, pray. YOU CAN NEVER BE SO FAR AWAY THAT GOD CANNOT HEAR YOU WHEN YOU CALL. “Wherever we are,” wrote MATTHEW HENRY, “we have liberty to draw near to God, and may find a way open to the throne of grace.” The deepest level of worship is praising God in spite of pain ,thanking God during a trial ,trusting him when tempted, surrendering while suffering, and loving him when he seems distant.Friendships are often tested by separation and silence, you are divided by physical or you are unable to talk .In your friendship with God ,you wont always feel close to him . Philip Yancey has wisely noted ,"Any relationship involves times of closeness and times of distance, and in a relationship with God,nomatter how intimate ,the pendulum will swing from one side to the other." (Philip Yancey,Reaching for the invisible God,pg 242 )That's when worship gets difficult. To mature your friendship,God will test it with periods of seeming separation -times when it feels as if he has abandoned or forgotten you.God feels a million miles away .St John of the Cross referred to these days of spiritual dryness, doubt ,and estrangement from God as "the dark night of the soul."Henri Nouwen called them "the ministry of absence."A.W. Tozer called them ," the ministry of the night ."Others refer to "the winter of the heart." Besides Jesus ,David probably had the closest friendship with God of anyone. God took pleasure in calling him " a man after my own heart."Yet David frequently complained of God's apparent absence:"Lord ,why are you standing aloof and far away?.Why do you hide when I need you the most.? (Psalm 10:1) Why have you forsaken me?. Why do you remain so distant.?Why do you ignore my cries for help.? ( Psam 22:1)Why have you abandoned me?"(Psalm43:2) Of course ,God hadnt really left God and he doesn't leave you .He has promised repeatedly, " I will never leave you nor forsake you."But God has not promised" you will always feel my presence."Infact ,God admits that sometimes he hides his face from us .(Isaiah 45:15)There are times when he appears to be MIA, missing -in-action,in your life . Floyd McClung describe it:"You wake up one morning and all your spiritual feelings are gone. You pray ,but nothing happens. You rebuke the devil ,but it doesn't change anything. You go through spiritual exercises.........you have your friends pray for you .....you confess every sin you can imagine, then go around asking forgiveness of everyone you know .You fast.....still nothing. You begin to wonder how long this spiritual gloom might last. Days?Weeks? Months? Will it ever end?.....it feels as if your prayers simply bounce off the ceiling. In utter desperation, you cry out," Whats the matter with me?".The truth is there is nothing wrong with you.!This is a nor- mal part of testing and maturity of your friendship with God. When God seems distant, you may feel that he is angry with you or is disciplin- ing you for some sin .In fact ,sin does disconnect us from intimate fellowship with God.We grieve God's Spirit and quench our fellowship with him by disobedience, conflict with others ,busyness, friendship with the world ,and other sins .The most common mistake Christians make in worship today is seeking an experience rather than seeking God. God’s holiness and majesty can make us think He is not within reach. We read words like “he builds his lofty palace in the heavens” (Amos 9:6a) and, like with royalty today, we can think that only special people, those who are better Christians than ourselves, get to be intimate with God. Yet, the Bible reassures us God is close at hand and with us always, even as ordinary and imperfect beings. Throughout Scripture we see God is the One who draws close to us. So dont be troubled . Circumstances cannot change the character of God.God's grace is still in full force ,he is still for you , even when you dont feel it.In the absence of confirming circumstances,Job held on to God's Word.
