The ramifications of the pull-out are far reaching and one of them is that Zimbabwe Legal Resources Foundation (LRF), a human rights entity that supports over 20 000 vulnerable women and children yearly to access justice closes at the end of this month as its funding dries up. Over a dozen LRF offices are closing throughout the country SIDA pulls out as PVO Bill sets in • Ramifications for JSC and LRF To page 2 Ziyambi Ziyambi .
The Mirror: Ihwai nekuhwikwa Local news Page 2 28 March - 4 April 2024 www.masvingomirror.com From page 1 with nine lawyers and over 40 support staff losing their jobs. Minister of Women Affairs, Community, Small and Medium Enterprises Development Monica Mutsvangwa regretted the closure of LRF and said it will have negative effects on women and children’s rights. LRF supports women and children’s rights like inheritance, family law rights, property sharing, birth certificates for children and their legal representation. It trains traditional leaders like village heads and chiefs on the law and does public awareness campaigns on human rights which is an area that the ruling party is uncomfortable with. The closure of LRF creates a void that will leave marginalized women and children with virtually no access to justice and hence a human rights crisis in the courts. SIDA is also probably the largest donor funder of the Judicial Service Com- mission (JSC), Veritas, and Zimli. SIDA which ironical- ly built several magistrates courts in Zimbabwe when President Mnangagwa was Minister of Legal and Parliamentary Affairs has moved across the border to Zambia. It funded the construction of Masvingo, Marondera, Chitungwiza and Rotten Row magistrates’ courts.Currently JSC has financial problems to the extent of failing to procure cars for Judges. Swedish Embassy in Zimbabwe Deputy Head of Mission and SIDA country Head Berthollet Bwira Kaboru confirmed the pull out to The Mirror. He said the pull-out is be- cause the agency has run out of resources. Sources close to the matter however, told The Mirror that this was just diplomatic politeness adding that sections of the Private Voluntary Organisation (PVO) Amendment Bill and in particular Section 21 and 22 were so re- pressive that SIDA said it cannot work with partners who are subjected to such draconian laws. “SIDA is pulling out be- cause of PVO that stifles free financial and expres- sive freedoms for the funder and implementing partner and its repressive nature,” said a source. Section 21 and 22 of the amended law calls for death penalty or life in prison if arraigned for supporting terrorism and money laundering. The PVO Bill gives the registrar sweeping powers against the voluntary organisations. Efforts to get a comment from LRF Executive Director Valerie Zviuya were futile. “There is no logic to it. We are out of resources. The contract expires either at the end of March or April this year. Contracts with all organisations expire all the time and this is normal. We have a good working relationship with the LRF and we are still partners,” he said. The crucial services offered by LRF are legal representation, legal edu- cation and research and advocacy. The LRF has a building in Harare, rented regional and many district offices where paralegals and interns are employed to give legal service to the vulnerable. Minister of Justice, Legal and Par- liamentary Affairs Ziyambi Ziyambi told The Mirror in an interview that the PVO is not yet law and cannot be the reason for SIDA’s departure. He however, said that Government is not yet informed about the move. “I can’t comment on the matter because SIDA has not told us its reasons for leaving. The PVO bill has not been ascented into an act and it therefore can’t be reason for their withdrawal,” he said. “We have had a long standing relationship with LRF and the fact that they are now winding up operations will definitely impact negatively on access to justice by our vulnerable women. Access to justice is a fundamental human right. I want to express my heartfelt gratitude for the work that LRF has done,” said Mutsvangwa. LRF has been operational since 1985 with five regional offices in Mutare, Masvingo, Gweru, Bulawayo and Harare. It has district offices across in almost all 10 provinces. Its ser- vices include legal representation, research and advocacy, legal edu- cation, and strengthening justice delivery. Regional offices in Mutare and Gweru are already shut down while the Masvingo office is only left with two staffers from nine. SIDA supported LRF with a budget of about US$1,5 million annually while 11 other organisations poured in US$1, 2 million. Two individuals from Zambian and South African publications presented business models employed at their respective organisations. The workshop saw participants working on ways of possible collaboration locally, regionally and internationally. Internews Regional Media Business Advisor, Tim Zunckel made presentations on various topics including the evolving media landscape, localism, diversifying business, importance of financial literacy and how money impacts media operations. Zunckel said money is not the only determinant of sustainability in media operations as the concept is broad. “When we look at our organisations, the business model environment which we operate in, we mustn’t solely be focused on money although it is an important aspect. We must have a bigger picture on sustainability. The focus on sustainability is broad, and other aspects on sustainability include organisational structure, management skills and expertise,” he added. One of the biggest assets in the sustain- ability of media companies is building trust with audiences and consumers and respecting them. Zunckel also spoke on the concept of redefining and said content creation is a great part of the redefinition conversation. News Diggers Managing Editor, Mukosha Funga presented on the origins, growth, operations of her organisation. News Diggers is a Zambian media organisation. She said media practitioners have to think of how they can collaborate and leverage social media and traditional media to grow businesses, a case of News Diggers. The organisation was established towards the end of 2016. They started off by designing a website where they post their stories and have grown to publishing a daily paper, an electronic paper published three times a week and a separate weekend publication. With time, the company monetised their website and put a pay wall for daily, weekly, monthly and annual subscriptions. She added that the organisation also has partnerships with a number of African and International organisations. The second day had a presentation from Tinashe Munyuki of South Africa’s Daily Maverick on business strategies. MISA holds media business seminar Tim Zunckel.

She died after a lengthy battle with liver cancer on Sunday afternoon around 1 pm at her house in Rhodene. Her first born child Tom said the family is poorer without her. “Her body was taken from Nyaradzo Funeral Services and we held a mass on Tuesday at the main Cathedral along Mashava road. “We used to call her ‘vasinyerere’ because she was a quiet person. She was very loving, hardworking and a perfectionist. She was a girls’ guides’ leader for a number of years,” he said. Mbuya Vandirai taught at several schools in Masvingo including Bondolfi, Dikwindi and Vurombo primary schools before retiring in 2010. She was born in Nyimo Village in Buhera in 1945 and attended Makumbe Primary and Zimuto Mission. She trained as a teacher majoring in Home Economics. Mbuya Vandirai taught at Bondolfi Primary before joining Dikwindi Primary in 1983. She transferred to Vurombo Primary in 1986 and left the school in 2010 when she retired. She is survived by five children, four boys and a girl and 10 grandchildren. Three of her children are in the teaching profession at Great Zimbabwe University, Ndarama High School and Runyararo Primary School whilst two are entrepreneurs. Mbuya Vandirai buried The season of Easter is here; time to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ. A lot of people will be travelling to their rural homes to be with family members. Some will be travelling to interesting places just to have a good and relaxing time. Others will be going to weddings and family functions that require their presence. Consequently there is going to be a lot of traffic on the roads. As it is we are already having many road accidents on a daily basis. Of late we have been seeing more and more people being injured and killed on our roads. It is important to note that in that process valuable property is lost as vehicles are dam aged some beyond repair. Increase the volumes of traffic in such a situation and you are likely or definitely going to have more accidents. Most of the accidents that are happening are indeed avoidable as they are due to human error. Someone may be impatient and decides to overtake on a slope, a sharp curve or in front of oncoming traffic. A driver may drink and decide to drive under the influence of alcohol. Another driver may decide to speed resulting in him or her losing control of the vehicle and having an accident. It is the driver who decides to overload the vehicle, something that can result in an accident. A driver can just be careless in the way he or she handles the vehicle and cause an accident. Some accidents are happening when vehicles that are not roadworthy are deliberately driven on the roads. Unlicensed drivers drive without the requisite skills endangering other people’s lives through accidents. Blame is also extended to cyclists and pedestrians who can be careless enough to cause accidents. The question now is; is this what we want to happen this Easter? All this can definitely be avoided by someone taking the right decision. Drivers need to make a serious effort to first of all value human life while driving and make the decision to drive according to the rules of the road. The police will also have to play their part. The corruption whereby unroadworthy, overloaded and speeding vehicles are allowed to pass through roadblocks after paying bribes should stop if we are serious about reducing the carnage on our roads. Road rehabilitation reduces accidents and should be ongoing. Naturally some accidents will happen due to circumstances beyond the control of the driver. This can be excusable. Admittedly, what is being said here is repetition. All the same if the repetition can save lives then let us continue to encourage each other to save lives, not only this Easter but every day of our lives. Save lives on the road The late Mbuya Tererai Mugove Vandirai

That’s a story for another day. Our main story is here in the ancient city. Yeah, pakadii hapo apo pavamudhakisi apo? Ko chii nhai newe muzukuru. Wakutora mbuya sekuru vachiri vapenyu? I have heard that a man can cheat on his wife and still love her but a woman cannot cheat on her man and still love him because they say while men do not have sex with emotions, women can't have sex without attaching emotions to it. This is the reason why men simply need a place to have sex while women need a reason to have sex. I heard there is a looming major divorce after the hubby discovered that his significant half is cheating on him with their muzukuru. Too bad. Maita vanhu vekuziva mhani. Ngenyi muchidaro imi? Like always it's know that most women who take their husbands to court for divorce are those that cheat on their men. A non-cheating woman would most likely never take her husband to court for divorce, unless the man excessively abuses her physically and emotionally to the point of killing her. But apo iwe Mary, oh is it Jane or whoever wakutora murume to court so that you can share the few properties? Asi handiti ndiwe wakacheata here? Asi takadya mapotatoes pamuchato wani? I just bumped into this but I think it's true. Men and women you have to read this slowly and carefully. There is a lot of wisdom here. Men don't equate sex with love. A man can have sex with another woman but still doesn't love her. That's why women who fell in love with married men find it difficult to find happiness in those relationships as they are just being used by those married men. But once a married woman starts sleeping with you, she can even narrate some hidden secrets concerning her husband and she will even tell you why she hates him (her husband). For men, sex and love are two different things. But for women, sex and love are one and the same things. For men, sex comes first before love (infatuation), but for women love comes first before sex (true love). Therefore, once your woman starts having sex with another man/men, her love shifts from you to that man and she can even start giving that man the best food and love than she gives you. The fact that your man is cheating on you doesn't mean he has stopped loving you. But I can't say the same for women. Once a woman starts cheating on you, she has fallen for someone else and you people will never live the same again. If your wife starts cheating, you should be a lucky man not to die in less than 10 years. It has been found that 95% of women who cheat wish their husbands dead. She can even accept poison from the boyfriend to eliminate her husband. That is the main reason why it is to dangerous for a woman to cheat, so men be careful once you discover your woman is cheating.

Speaking to journalists on the sidelines of a Safety, Occupational and Health workshop facilitated by the National Social Security Authority (NSSA) at King Solomon Hotel in Kwekwe on Thursday, Moyo said Government is ready to push AI and engineers must be conscientized to take the lead. “In terms of infrastructure I cannot say yes we are ready to embrace AI but what I can safely say is that, as Government we are ready to push AI, the first thing is acceptance, accepting that we cannot remain behind in AI so there is need for engineers to be conscientised to take the lead in this endeavor. Engineers are important to the economy,” said Moyo. The workshop was attended by engineers specialized in different areas including mechanical engineering, civil engineering and electrical engineering among others. The engineers also toured industries in Kwekwe where they also gave recommendations for improvement in different areas of those industries. We cannot be left out on AI – July Moyo July Moyo.

Speaking to journalists on the sidelines of a Training of Trainers workshop on the rollout of the early warning system for mitigating school dropouts at King Solomon Hotel in Kwekwe on Wednesday afternoon, Minister of Primary and Secondary Education, Torerayi Moyo said the Ministry will mobilize donations in cash and kind to give to the families of the departed. “I brainstormed and felt that we need to come up with financial support to the families of the deceased because they were breadwinners and because of that I will personally write letters to well wishers who can contribute whether in kind or financially,” said Moyo. He said the gap left by the teachers require experienced teachers. One of the teachers, Joe Tsungirirai had served the school for more than 10 years. “I am told that one of the teachers, Joe had served the school for more than 10 years. We will also support the school in many ways through deployment of teachers who are going to replace the five so my message to the District Schools Inspector (DSI) is we want experienced teachers deployed to that school because those five were highly experienced and were highly committed to duty,” he said. Residents told The Mirror that there are two blocked, dysfunctional toilets at the craft market place and because of their state the vendors are going into the nearby bush to relieve themselves. They also called for decent vending stalls as they currently have makeshift plastic sheds and they place their wares including vegetables on the ground which is not hygienic. Efforts to get a comment from Gokwe Mayor, Lisias Mutengwe were fruitless. He initially said he was driving but did not answer further calls. “I will respond to the issues raised when I am free but right now I am driving,” said Mutengwe. Acting Town Secretary Joconia Nyoni could not be reached for a comment. Gokwe Urban and Rural Residents Association (GURRA) representative, John Mbavala said the issue of public toilets should be prioritised by council. “Council has invested on a pay toilet at the main bus terminus (rank) but there are no free toilets. “We need public toilets and pay toilets are not public toilets, residents are at risk of contracting cholera because of this problem,” said Mbabala. Vendors said the unavailability of public toilets saw women and girls being harassed in the bushes. “On daily basis I receive complaints from women being harassed by men in the bush. “Our marketplace is big, it accommodates farmers who bring their produce daily and vendors who constitute a very big number. We open at 6am and close at 6pm. Our main challenge is that we don’t have toilets. We have a dysfunctional Blair toilet and the other one which is not even functional had its roof partly blown off. “I have been chief security officer of this place for a long time. Council has failed us. They collect money for non-existent service,” said Evaristo Mashingaidze the Chief Security Officer at the Craft Market. Rachel Butau who works at the Craft Market said women are being harassed in the bush. “Women are not safe because of unavailability of ablution facilities here. Most of the time women run the risk of being harassed by men in the bush and at one point a woman was attacked whilst relieving herself and she ran out of the bush with her pants down. “Council needs to act and build better toilets here before it’s too late,” said Butau. The Mirror: Ihwai nekuhwikwa Page10 28 March - 4 April 2024 www.masvingomirror.com ELLEN MLAMBO MIRROR REPORTER MASVINGO – Masvingo residents have expressed shock at council bills that they have received over the last two months which are sometimes three times more than what they used to pay. An expert in local authority told The Mirror that the increases in the bills for high density suburbs is because of the zone-based method of calculating property tax which was introduced in the current budget. A bill is divided into two parts which are the rates and the service charges. The rates are tax on property while service charges are payments for water consumed, sewer and refuse collection. The expert said properties are taxed according to size with properties that are bigger in area paying more. Meanwhile industrial properties are taxed through valuation which includes the land size and the improvements on the land. The expert also said the new bills match what obtains in the region but was quick to accept that those in the region had far better economies and higher salaries than Zimbabwe. Residents inundated The Mirror with calls that their bills have in some cases trebled while the majority said their bills have doubled. Masvingo United Residents and Ratepayers Alliance (MURRA) spokesperson, Godfrey Mtimba said the issue is not about what the bills are but what is within the reach of ordinary Zimbabweans. “Pensioners earn US$20 a month and yet their bills are around US$70. Civil servants including teachers earn US$200 and of that the City Council takes away US$70. Masvingo is a city of vendors scrounging for a living and definitely these bills are out of their world. “This is ridiculous. It is ridiculous for this economy. We have engaged council but our pleas have fallen on deaf ears,” said Mtimba .A former Masvingo City Councilor told The Mirror that his bill jumped from around US$35 to more than US$100. “Whatever argument council has over the bills, the reality is that they are unaffordable. The majority are not going to pay them,” said the former councilor who declined to be named. Masvingo Mayor, Aleck Tabe conceded to The Mirror that the issue of council bills is topical in Masvingo. He said some of the high bills were due to water bills. He urged residents to check their water pipes to see if there are no leaks because the piping system is old. He also said some water meters are dysfunctional forcing council to use estimates. He said council recently introduced property tax which also contributed to the rise in bills. Masvingo Residents Forum team leader, Shingirai Nyahwa said the local authority needed to review the charges. He said water is a right and cutting off water from a resident is a violation of a fundamental right. He bemoaned the council’s service delivery and said it did not match the charges that the local authority is collecting. He bemoaned the use of estimates in charging water. “We have received a lot of complaints from residents disputing the bills. Council supplies water for a few hours a day but the water bills are exorbitant,” he added. Caroline Phiri, a Target Kopje resident said her bill has jumped from US$30 a month to US$90 a month. The office will also be involved in consumer education and it will handle complaints and expedite swift resolution and regulation of energy supply issues. The offices which opened doors to clients on Friday are located at CABS Centre along Fifth Street. In his address, Zera board chairperson, David Madzikanda condemned the handling of fuel and liquefied petroleum gas without proper licensing. “As Zera, we are worried with the way people are handling fuel and liquefied petroleum. Petroleum accidents are very catastrophic when they happen and they claim lives of innocent people. “It is important for operators to know the right structure setups for fuel. We are hoping that the establishment of an office in Gweru will bring a positive change,” he said. The decentralised regional office is third after Mutare and Bulawayo. There will be serious consequences for any Police officer found disregarding the Police instruction, said Nyathi. Speaking at a Security and Safety Workshop for journalists held by Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA) in collaboration with the Police, Nyathi urged law enforcement officers to apprehend individuals caught transporting livestock at night and release them in the morning to travel during daylight hours. The workshop was held at a local lodge on Wednesday. “No cattle or goats should be transported at night, police should capture all those they find transporting livestock during the night and release them in the morning to travel during daylight hours,” said Nyathi. Failure to comply with this directive may lead to police officers losing their jobs. Nyathi also warned police officers that it was a serious offence to clear livestock from the offices without visiting the areas where they are based. “Clearing of livestock should not be done from the office, police officers should follow procedures by going to the ground, “said Nyathi. Nyathi said an anti-stocktheft campaign blitz is being planned in Chiredzi, calling on media outlets to support the programme by disseminating information. He also allegedly demanded his money back after the act and robbed the complainant of her mobile phone. Regional Magistrate Vimbai Mutukwa remanded Gwabvira in custody to April 8, 2022. The State said on March 23, 2024, at Madhimoni Bottle Store, Runde Bussiness Centre, Gwabvira paid 200 Rands for sex to the complainant and they agreed to have sex at the latter’s room. He forced the complainant to have unprotected sex with her. The following day the complainant reported the case at Ngundu Police Station and a medical examination was done at Mwenezi District Hospital. Tanyaradzwa Tinagwo appeared for the State. SIMBARASHE MTEMBO MIRROR REPORTER MASVINGO – Gutu Deputy District Development Co-ordinator, Benedict Buddy Gwede (41) stole a date stamp from his immediate boss and certified a fake land offer letter, Gutu Magistrate Edwin Marecha heard on Monday. Gwede is also accused of receiving and issuing an offer letter, a role that does not fall under his office but the Ministry of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Resettlement. Marecha granted the accused US$300 bail after he spent the weekend in the cooler for criminal abuse of office. Gwede allegedly stole DDC Chiedza Tafirei’s date stamp to authenticate an illegal offer letter he gave to Joseph Muzapi for Plot Number 21, Craig Farm, Gutu. The farm belongs to businessman Francis Toringepi, the court was told. The State did not oppose his bail application issued on condition that he should not interfere with witnesses and report to Gutu Police once every week. He will be back in court on April 8, 2024. The court heard that Toringepi who owned the farm since 2015, suffered losses when Muzapi went to the farm armed with a fake offer letter and destroyed his crops in December last year. Circumstances are that contrary to his roles and sometime in 2023, Gwede personally received a land application from Joseph Muzapi at the DDC’s office whereas land applications should be submitted to the Gutu District Lands Office. He took advantage of Gutu DDC Chiedza Tafirei’s absence and wrote an offer letter for Plot Number 21, Craig Farm, Gutu in Muzapi’s name. He also stamped the offer letter using Tafirei’s date stamp without her knowledge and approval. “The accused stamped the offer letter. This was inconsistent with the accused’s person duty as he had no capacity to issue offer letters as the issuing of offer letters is the preserve of the Ministry of Lands,” reads part of the State outline. He wrote a letter to Gutu Rural District Council (RDC) CEO, Alexander Mtembwa to effect ownership change of the farm and handed the letter and offer letter to Muzapi’s friend Innocent Tarugarira. Muzapi went to the farm after the local authority had effected the changes in December 2023. He hired a tractor that ploughed Toringepi’s crops and ordered his workers and family to vacate the farm. Toringepi was informed of the matter and he filed a Police report in Harare leading to investigations into the matter. Ngwenya was speaking at the graduation of 120 students at the United Church of Christ in Zimbabwe (UCCZ) run college in Chipinge on Thursday. Some areas that are seeing an increase in the number of female students are motor mechanics, welding, plumbing and drain laying. He called upon communities to support the college by hiring its faculties for contracts like construction. The college which has become a hub for youth training faces challenges like lack of adequate training materials, lack of beds and mattresses, additional boys’ dormitory, unavailability of enough computers, need for additional offices and classroom furniture. Staff houses are yet to be connected to electricity. The school also needs to fence the college administration block and garden. The Mirror: Ihwai nekuhwikwa Page 20 28 March - 4 April 2024 www.masvingomirror.com International News By Virginia Pietromarchi Bassirou Diomaye Faye, a previously little-known tax inspector freed from jail two weeks ago, looks likely to become Senegal’s next president after a vote that observers say is proof of the country’s democratic resilience. While the electoral commission is expected to announce final results in the coming days, early tallies showed Faye winning an outright majority in Sunday’s election. His main rival, ruling party candidate Amadou Ba, conceded defeat late on Monday. And outgoing President Macky Sall congratulated the 44-yearold on the results. “This is the victory of Senegalese democracy,” Sall said. The election, originally scheduled for February, was delayed by Sall, sparking speculation that he was contemplating extending his rule — he has completed two terms and is barred from a third under the constitution — before he eventually agreed to the vote on Sunday. Senegal has a history of peaceful transitions of power since its independence in the 1960s, Hawa Ba, associate director of the Open Society Foundation, said on Monday. “But yesterday was more important as people wanted to turn a page of Senegal’s political history.” Now Faye has a nation’s expectations to deliver on. Faye was not the face of the opposition in the election. Ousmane Sonko was. Sonko, also a tax inspector, won widespread popularity among Senegalese youth by promising to tackle corruption – perceived as a distinct trait of Sall’s government. He charmed those who felt left out of the country’s pre-COVID-19 economic boom, a 10-year success story that won the country international praise for becoming one of the fastest-growing economies in Francophone Africa, but failed to translate into better job opportunities for young people. Three out of 10 Senegalese aged 18 to 35 are jobless, according to Afrobarometer data. Sonko was jailed and barred from running in the elections over defamation charges, but his popularity did not wane. Instead, he urged his supporters to vote for Faye, the man he nominated as his heir. A man solves a sudoko riddle as he waits in line to cast his votes outside a polling station during the presidential elections, in Dakar, Senegal, Sunday, March 24, 2024. (AP Photo/Mosa'ab Elshamy) A man works on puzzles as he waits in line in Dakar to cast his vote in the presidential election [Mosa’ab Elshamy/AP] And they heeded the call – potentially giving Faye a victory in the first round. Faye’s support came from different sectors of society, ranging from disenchanted youth to middle-class entrepreneurs. “I pledge to govern with humility and transparency and to fight corruption at all levels,” Faye said late on Monday. “I pledge to devote myself fully to rebuilding our institutions.” Faye ran his electoral campaign promising to radically change political practices and the country’s economic orientation. Proposals include a review of the country’s mining and energy contracts to give Senegalese more control over their own resources and profits, more independence for the judiciary, reduction of the president’s power and regional monetary reforms. Sonko and Faye also promised to review ties with former colonial power France in a move that raised questions over the country’s future foreign policy. AntiFrench sentiments in other Francophone countries in West Africa – such as Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger – have fomented military coups. France has pulled out militarily from these nations, which have turned instead to Russia. Vincent Foucher, West Africa analyst at the Bordeaux Institute of Political Studies, believes foreign policy will not change significantly. “Sonko took a strong position against France but showed afterward that he was willing to compromise – the tone has not been too alarming,” Foucher said. In March last year, Faye told French media that Senegal was looking for a “win-win partnership”. Back then, he didn’t know he was likely to become the face of it. Bassirou Diomaye Faye holds a press conference after winning the presidential elections in Dakar, Senegal, Monday, March 25, 2024. (AP Photo/Mosa'ab Elshamy) Bassirou Diomaye Faye holds a news conference in Dakar after it appeared he might have won the presidential election in the first round of voting. Faye’s apparent win and even the vote itself was not guaranteed just a month ago when Sall postponed the election. The move plunged the country into chaos, triggering deadly protests and prompting the country’s highest court to overrule the decision. Sall’s second mandate was marred by violence and democratic backsliding, which left a bitter taste in the mouths of many Senegalese, observers said. In the past three years, dozens of protesters were killed and 1,000 people were imprisoned on politically motivated charges, according to Human Rights Watch. Eventually, last weekend, more than seven million voters queued to cast their ballots in peaceful scenes that stood in stark contrast with the drama of the past month. “This victory shows that Senegal’s democracy has been able to produce all the necessary antibodies to heal and resist,” said Alioune Tine, founder of the Senegal-based think tank Afrikajom Center. “It shows that our democracy is in good shape.” This is not the first time Senegalese voters have fought back against an attempted constitutional breach. In 2012, two-time President Abdoulaye Wade tried to run for a third term. The move was not welcomed by young people, who voted en masse for Sall, the thenopposition candidate. Source: Al Jazeera What’s next for Senegal under likely President Bassirou Diomaye Faye? Faye promises to review the West African nation’s mining contracts and ties with key nations. Now, he’ll be tested.
The Mirror: Ihwai nekuhwikwa Page 21 28 March - 4 April 2024 www.masvingomirror.com Religious News BY FR ISIAH DHLIWAYO Christology concerns the person and work of Jesus Christ. The starting point for the biblical foundations to Christology is the New Testament. However ,since Christianity has its roots in Judaism, reflections on the person and work of Christ have to be set in an Old Testament context.Christological titles which have biblical foundations ,that is ,the Word ,Christ, or Messiah,Son of God,Lord ,and God are exposed. So, Christology is learning more about Jesus so we can love and follow Him better. It should be an earnest desire of every Christian heart.Though Who Jesus was ,is a historic question ,his history enters as part of whole fabric of Christology.Much concern is on who Jesus was/ is and what Jesus did /does.The person and work of Jesus Christ is of central importance to Christian Theology.Christ is the historical point of departure for Christianity. Christology (from the Greek , Khristós and -, -logia), literally 'the understanding of Christ', is the study of the nature (person) and work (role in salvation) of Jesus Christ. This Theological Reflection highlights the importance of studying Christology as it is important among the Christian Church as such pursuits often lead to a better understanding of Christian doctrine and how Christ's existence relates to eternal salvation, the Trinity (God the Father, Christ the Son, and the Holy Spirit), and the purpose of the Christian Church. In this study and reflection there are however three major arguments for Christology:- the argument from the wisdom of Jesus, the argument from the claims of Jesus as son of God and the argument from the resurrection. Who exactly was /is Jesus. This christological question together with Peter's response "You are the Christ (Mk8:29) has theological content. According J Macquarie (1990:3),there must have been a time when the disciples began to have a more definite faiththat Jesus was theologically significant figure. It is at this point then that one can properly speak of the beginning of Christology,or even ,the beginning of Christianity (cf Paul Tillich). The New Testament was written against the background of the strict monotheism of Israel. The idea of anyone being addressed as God would have been blasphemous within this context. However, there are three clear instances of Jesus being called God in the NT (cf Raymond Brown 1967:28-29): (1)The opening section of the Fourth Gospel, which includes the affirmation "the Word was God(Jn1:1) (2) The confession of Thomas ,in which he addressed the risen Christ as "my Lord and my God (Jn 20:28) (3) The opening of the letter to the Hebrews,in which a psalm is addressed to Jesus as God (Heb 1:8). To these verses may be added a series of important New Testament passages which speak of the significance of Jesus in functional terms -Jesus as performing certain functions or tasks understood as the prerogative of God. The Word Jesus is designated the Word or Logos. The Christological attribute Logos has Greek derivation as seen in patristic Christology's appeal to Greek philosophy. But the New Testament appears to be concerned with the use of the term Logos as an Old Testament concept. But the New Testament understanding of the Word as a distinct entity or person within the Godhead can be seen as a late development. In OT , God's Word ,(Hebrew dabhar, God's speech or discourse is treated as an entity with existence independent of God,yet originating with God.The word is potrayed as going into the world to confront men and women with the will and purpose of God , bringing guidance, judgement and salvation ( Psalm119:89,Is55:10-11) (McGrath 1994,1997:293). Son of Man The title Son of Man as applied to Jesus is very problematic. We can ask : Was this a title at all? Did Jesus use it of himself? Was the Son of Man supposed to be someone other than Jesus? Did Jesus expect this other to come and inaugurate the new age? For many Christians, the term Son of Man stands as a natural counterpart to Son of God .It is the affirmation of the humanity of Christ ,just as the latter is a contemporary affirmation of his divinity. However ,it is not quite as simple as this. The term Son of Man (Hebrew ben adam ,or Aramaic bar nasha) was commonly used in these languages as a periphrasis for man. Son of God The title Son of God refers to the status of Jesus as the divine son of God the Father. As a part of the theological concept of Trinity, it also refers to his status as God the Son, the second person or hypostasis of the Godhead.Today it is commonly held that to be a Christian is to acknowledge that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.For Paul ,all believers ,male and female are sons of God by adoption. Lord The title as different from other titles considered expresses rank.To acknowledge Jesus as Lord appears to have been the earliest Christian confession.(Rm 10:9)To say Jesus is Lord is certainly to say something about him ,but equally it is to express one's own devotion and allegiance. It is to recognize Jesus as an exalted being .But just how far exalted is he? Christ/Messiah The title Christ is permanently connected to Jesus and applied like his surname. In what follows ,Oscar Cullmann ( 1959:133) is right to point out the strangeness of this development in the history of Christianity. The Greek word Chritos ,Hebrew ,Mashiah has been anglicized to Messiah to denote ,the annointed one.Rudolf Bultmann and William Wrede note that Jesus did not think of himself as Messiah at all.But before many years had passed, the disciples were indeed calling Jesus the Christ ,but the word was already changed in meaning and continues to change up until today. ©26/03/2024 Systematic Theological Reflection on Christology
The Mirror: Ihwai nekuhwikwa Religious news Page 22 28 March - 4 April 2024 www.masvingomirror.com What you think about God is how you will relate with Him. And God cares what you think about Him because a wrong notion of Him will cause you to enter error. (Matthew 22:29 KJV) Jesus answered and said unto them, Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God. Something We should all understand here is, God is a Spirit and We can only Know Him 'if' He Reveals Himself to Us. It has been the Aim of God to Live In Human beings but when God created Adam and Eve with a Will to accept God or not, Adam and Eve Rejected. When God forsaw that Adam and Eve would reject Him Accommodation in them before the Foundation of this World. He had already created a Way Out In Him in a human being called Last Adam or Jesus Christ. (1 Corinthians 15:45 KJV) And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spirit. Adam and Eve had just a living soul but when they choosed death, they became dead Souls so is anyone born after the sperms of a human being. The Bible was written to Reveal to Us God in a human being. (Isaiah 7:14 KJV) Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel. The Bible to written to Reveal to Humanity this Son. Jesus Christ. God In a Human being. (Matthew 1:21 KJV) And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins. The coming of Jesus Christ (God + Human being) was a Promise in the Old Testament but promise fulfilled in the New Testament. The Old Testament Saints were natural men because they weren't Born Again but they believed in the coming of the Christ. Salvation to Come. (1 Timothy 3:16 KJV) And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory. Jesus Christ is God Explaining Himself to Human beings. (1 Peter 1:10 KJV) Of which salvation the prophets have enquired and searched diligently, who prophesied of the grace that should come unto you: The Old Testament people believed In Salvation to Come or Dominion over Death or the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. (1 Peter 1:11 KJV) Searching what, or what manner of time the Spirit of Christ which was in them did signify, when it testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ, and the glory that should follow. The Old Testament Saints prophesied about the Suffering of Jesus Christ and the Glory that, but within the Prophesies of Christ were their own personal interaction. Someone like Elijah would yield to God by raising people from the Dead and also killing people. That's painting God like someone who can kill and give Life of which God is not like that. (James 3:11 KJV) Doth a fountain send forth at the same place sweet water and bitter? God couldn't be the One giving Life and killing at the same time. Elijah yielded to God and Satan because God doesn't kill. Just like Peter will yield to God in Matthew 16:17, but in the same Matthew 16:22-23 yielded to Satan. Only Jesus Christ knew the Character of God because Jesus Christ is God who came in the Flesh to Explain Himself to Human beings so humans can be able to relate with God as Father. The Old Testament Saints said somethings that weren't true about God. Saying God killed in the Old Testament was because they didn't know who was behind death. One thing you will not expressly find in the Old Testament was the True Character of God and also Satan. So the Old Testament Saints didn't know who was behind death because the True Character of God and Satan couldn't be known by them because they weren't Born Again. So Bible was written to Reveal to Us the Real Character of God and also Teach Us Knowledge of Salvation. If you Study Acts of the Apostles, You will see how We are supposed to to interpret the Old Testament. Apostle Peter will quote the Book Jeol and Psalms and many Old Testament Scriptures but rightly dividing them and Taught Christ them. After Jesus Christ Resurrected from the Dead, He spent 40 days teaching them how to Interpret the Scriptures (Genesis to Malachi). (Acts 1:3 KJV) To whom also he shewed himself alive after his passion by many infallible proofs, being seen of them forty days, and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God: Jesus Christ taught His Disciples for forty days how to interpret the Old Testament. (Luke 24:25 KJV) Then he said unto them, O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken: He called some of His Disciples 'fools' for not understanding the writings of the Old Testament Prophets. (Luke 24:26 KJV) Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory? The Old Testament Prophets had one Message, the Suffering of Christ and the Glory that Followed. (Luke 24:27 KJV) And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself. Jesus Christ taught them how to Interpret the Scriptures from Genesis to Malachi. This is the Doctrine of Christ. In the New Testament, you will not hear anything from Jesus or His Apostles about the story how David killed Goliath, because they knew God wasn't behind the death of Goliath. (2 Timothy 2:15 KJV) Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. Bible Studies can only be effective if You can go to Scriptures (Genesis to Malachi) and bring out only the things concerning Jesus Christ. Like someone will quote Malachi 3:8-11 and say if you don't Tithe, the Devourer will not be rebuked. Studying the Old Testament this way puts you in error because the Devourer was rebuked because Jesus Christ Died for Human beings not because they pay or don't pay tithes. So if you Study Malachi 3:8-11 without the Spirit of Truth, you will misinterprete the character of God. (John 16:13 KJV) Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. The Old Testament Prophets didn't have all the Truth, the only Truth they had was about the Suffering of Christ and the Glory that Followed. And they also said and did things that wasn't from the Holy Spirit. Like Elijah calling fire down to kill People. The Disciples of Jesus also wanted to call fire down to kill people and they quoted the Bible. (Luke 9:54 KJV) And when his disciples James and John saw this, they said, Lord, wilt thou that we command fire to come down from heaven, and consume them, even as Elias did? If you don't have the Spirit of Truth, you will think that fire (death) came from God. (Luke 9:55 KJV) But he turned, and rebuked them, and said, Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of. The Holy Spirit wasn't behind the dead of the Soldiers who came to arrest Prophet Elijah. (Luke 9:56 KJV) For the Son of man is not come to destroy men’s lives, but to save them. And they went to another village. Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit are One and God. Jesus Christ the same yesterday, today and forever. Jesus Christ rebuked them as He rebukes demons. Why? Because the spirit of the devil was behind the death (fire) that came and killed the Soldiers who came to arrest Prophet Elijah. We must understand that Jesus Christ is Lord and He is the reason the Bible was written. Genesis to Malachi is a Coded Book. You can't study Genesis to Malachi to know the Consistent Character of God because Genesis to Malachi was written to Reveal Jesus Christ to Us and then Jesus Christ Reveals God. (Matthew 11:27 KJV) All things are delivered unto me of my Father: and no man knoweth the Son, but the Father; neither knoweth any man the Father, save the Son, and he to whomsoever the Son will reveal him. If you decide to say "God God kills" because someone like Moses, Elijah killed with mysterious satanic power and called it the "power of God", then you have not listened to Jesus Christ. They didn't have the Spirit of Truth, so they attributed dead to God because they didn't know. I wonder why someone who claim to have the Spirit of Truth will still say God kills. It's obvious such a person hasn't Studied to Rightly Divide the Word of Truth. Only Jesus Christ can explain God. And in Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, Jesus Christ corrected the errors of the Old Testament Saints and gave the same Teachings to His Apostles beginning from the Book of Acts of the Apostles. (James 1:16 KJV) Do not err, my beloved brethren. People can only err when they don't acknowledge the Truth as Revealed by Jesus Christ. (1 Timothy 2:4 KJV) Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth. After Salvation is coming to the Knowledge of Truth. That's why 'We' are here to Teach God as Revealed InChrist. [email protected] +263774740407 How to interpret the bible..

Not me, not any one else, hence why it is the most precious liquid in the whole world. I was talking to Sekuru Google the other day and he told me of the “rule of 3’’ which says a person can live for 3 minutes without oxygen, 3 days without water and 3 weeks without food. However somewhere it is said the longest someone is known to have lived without water was in the case of an 18 year old Austrian, Andreas Mihavez, who was left locked up in a police cell for 18 days in 1979 forgotten by the police. Now in spite of the importance of water how many of us in Chibhoraniland know that 22 March is international World Water Day? It was first celebrated in 1993 after being put on the calendar by the United Nations with the intention of highlighting the importance of freshwater. The day encourages us to take action in tackling the global water crisis and to advocate for sustainable management of freshwater resources. Here we are talking of water that does not contain salt, like sea water iya inovava. This year’s World Water Day theme is; ‘’Water for Peace’’. Yes, wars have been waged to fight for water. In Africa Egypt and Ethiopia are currently at serious loggerheads over the waters of the Nile River. Here in Chibhoraniland water can be a source of conflict or peace. The other day at our own chibhorani I had to restrain two women who were fighting for a place in the water queue. I am sure most of you have witnessed similar squabbles and even fights at the chibhorani. In urban areas residents fight councils when they fail to provide tap water or increase its price. Yes, councils are failing to provide a continuous supply of the most precious liquid with residents going for days, weeks, months and even years without a single drop dropping from their taps. In rural areas, kuno kwedu kumachonyonyo, we can go for days without getting water from the chibhorani after a breakdown while some people have to walk long distances to get water from rivers and streams or unprotected wells. Yet water can be a source of peace when people converge at the community chibhorani to fetch water while talking and laughing in a communitarian and peaceful manner. With 2.2 billion people, just over a quarter of the world population, failing to access safe water the situation is quite serious. Some of these are here in our own beautiful Chibhoraniland. We therefore need to be more serious in terms of water provision and utilise the numerous water bodies that are lying idle in Chibhoraniland, construct more water bodies, drill more zvibhorani while mitigating climate change by any means possible. A good question is; are we going to have tap water in every home by 2030? Kumgobvunzawo kwaSekuru Taurai vanotaurisa. Water everywhere in Chibhoraniland

The Mirror: Ihwai nekuhwikwa Entertainment news Page 27 28 March - 4 April 2024 www.masvingomirror.com Raids turn up legal heat on Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs in sex-trafficking investigation The rapper and mogul Sean Combs is facing mounting legal troubles after federal agents searched his properties in Los Angeles and Miami as part of a sextrafficking investigation. A man wearing a white suit and sunglasses smiles at a camera Federal agents raid multiple properties of Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs On Monday morning, US Department of Homeland Security agents in tactical gear and armored vehicles raided two of Combs’s mansions as part of an investigation by federal authorities in New York, sources told the Associated Press. An attorney for Combs confirmed the searches on Tuesday, which he described as a “gross overuse of military-level force”, and said Combs had cooperated with authorities. While Combs has not been named as the target of the investigation, it follows numerous sexual assault allegations against the Bad Boy Records founder that have upended the career of one of the most prominent and enduring names in hiphop. In November, the singer Cassie, who dated Combs, accused him of rape and severe physical abuse spanning more than a decade. In a shocking lawsuit filled with harrowing accounts of abuse, Cassie alleged that Combs had subjected her to “a cycle of abuse, violence and sex trafficking”, forced her to have sex with male prostitutes, and used his powerful network to keep her trapped in the relationship. The pair settled one day after the lawsuit was filed. large white house photographed from above The home of Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs during a raid by federal law enforcement agents on 25 March 2024 in Los Angeles, California. Photograph: MEGA/GC Images In the months since, Combs – who has also been known as Puff Daddy, P Diddy, Diddy and Love – has faced several more lawsuits accusing him of rape, sexual assault, physical violence and revenge porn. Combs has denied all allegations and said he will “fight for my name”. Attorney Douglas Wigdor, who represents Cassie and another woman who sued Combs, said in a statement on Monday: “Hopefully, this is the beginning of a process that will hold Mr Combs responsible for his depraved conduct.” It is not yet known whether Monday’s searches are connected to the allegations made against Combs in recent months, and Combs has not been charged. Officials have not publicly acknowledged that they searched his homes, but unnamed law enforcement sources have confirmed the raids to media. Combs’s attorney confirmed the searches in a statement on Tuesday and said he was never detained but spoke with authorities. Neither Combs nor his family members were arrested and their ability to travel has not been restricted, said Aaron Dyer, the attorney. law enforcement officials walk on a street Federal investigators walk on a closed off road outside of a home owned by Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs in Los Angeles, California. Photograph: Caroline Brehman/EPA “There is no excuse for the excessive show of force and hostility exhibited by authorities or the way his children and employees were treated,” Dyer said. “This unprecedented ambush – paired with an advanced, coordinated media presence – leads to a premature rush to judgment of Mr Combs and is nothing more than a witch-hunt based on meritless accusations made in civil lawsuits.” Homeland Security Investigations said in a statement on Monday that it “executed law enforcement actions as part of an ongoing investigation, with assistance from HSI Los Angeles, HSI Miami and our local law enforcement partners.” Footage captured by KABC, a local TV news station, showed a police line around a Los Angeles house in the affluent Holmby Hills neighborhood near Beverly Hills, and a group of agents in the home’s backyard near the pool. Los Angeles police were also at the home at the time of the search, Fox LA reported. Investigators briefly detained two of Combs’s sons outside the home while the search was under way. Agents set up a command post outside the residence and agents could be seen entering and leaving for several hours after the search began. Federal investigators in New York have interviewed several people in relation to allegations of sex trafficking, domestic violence, sexual assault and the solicitation and distribution of illegal narcotics and firearms, unnamed sources told NBC and Rolling Stone. Combs was in Miami on Monday and planning to leave to the Bahamas, NBC reported, and investigators seized phones from him before his scheduled departure. Flight trackers show that a private plane belonging to Combs traveled from the Los Angeles area to Antigua on Monday, though Combs was not on it. Photograph: Rebecca Blackwell/AP The allegations against Combs, a threetime Grammy winner who has worked with some of the biggest names in music, have threatened his business empire and his legacy. More than a dozen companies cut ties with Revolt, the TV network Combs co-founded, after Cassie’s lawsuit and Combs temporarily stepped down from his role as chair of the company in November. His most recent album was nominated for best progressive R&B album at the Grammy awards, but Combs did not attend. Dyer, Combs’s attorney, said that there has been no finding of criminal or civil liability in regard to the recent accusations. “Mr Combs is innocent and will continue to fight every single day to clear his name,” he said. Advocacy groups have praised Cassie for bringing Combs’s alleged crimes to light. Powerful people like Combs have been able to escape accountability for too long, Shaunna Thomas, the co-founder and executive director at the national gender justice organization UltraViolet, said in a statement. UltraViolet had pushed the Grammys to cut ties with Combs following Cassie’s allegations and to ban him from the awards show. “Because of Cassie, and the three other women who came forward to tell their stories, we all now know the real Sean Combs,” Thomas said. “His brand deals have collapsed, fellow artists have distanced themselves from him and called for accountability, and even though he was nominated for a Grammy award this year, he didn’t show up because he knew he would not be welcome there.” The Associated Press contributed to this report Federal investigation comes amid multiple lawsuits including singer Cassie accusing him of rape and physical abuse
