ZDAMWU secretary general Justice Chinhema told The Mirror that Mandebvu assaulted a six member exhibition team accusing them of being unpatriotic and sellouts. He said this followed a damning letter dated April 8, 2024, submitted to the mine management by union accusing the mine’s human resources manager Tonderai Charehwa and administration manager Martin Liu of perpetrating and ignoring worker abuses. Mandebvu allegedly has close relations with the two managers. Chinhema said the matter was reported at Bikita Police Station on the same day. The intern Thelma Kanjoma also reported Mandebvu for indecent assault. “We have 672 members at Bikita Minerals. The mine management has not responded our letter and this is their response as far as we are concerned. Mandebvu harassed Thelma after he saw that she was recording what was going on. He ordered the event organizing committee to reimburse our US$100 that we paid as exhibition fees and went on to kick us out of the mine premises. No one was hurt,” he said. Masvingo Police Spokesperson Inspector Kudakwashe Dhewa said he was yet to get a report from Bikita Police Officer-InCharge when contacted for a comment. Efforts to get a comment from Bikita Minerals spokesperson Collins Nikisi were futile as his mobile phone was unreachable by the time of going to Press. Mandebvu refuted the claims and blamed former Masvingo Mayor Collen Maboke for influencing ZDAMWU leadership to falsify charges against him. “This is all Maboke’s doing. He is the one behind the false allegation. He hit me with his vehicle and I cannot walk. How could I possibly be going around assaulting exhibitors and pointing guns at them? I don’t even own a gun,” said Mandebvu. Mandebvu and Maboke were involved in a road accident on March 3, 2024, and Mandebvu reported Maboke for attempted murder last week alleging that the former intentionally broke his leg when he attempted to run over him with his car. He only reported the matter after Police had served him summons to appear in court for assaulting Maboke, his wife Tariro and a relative Simbarashe Matyei after the accident. Maboke said he has no knowledge of the matter when contacted for a comment. Chinhema said Mandebvu pointed the pistol at Takawira Masocha (education and training officer), Dorcas Nerupiri (national youth coordinator), Vimbai Chinhema (gender and women coordinator), Kanjoma and Queen Kusotera (insurance marketing officer). “The team comprised mostly of women and they are still in shock. Thugs should not be allowed to interfere with union works,” he added. Part of the scathing letter that Bikita Minerals is yet to respond to reads, “Both Mr. Li Rui (martin) and Mr Tonderai Charehwa have turned a blind eye to atrocities perpetrated against workers by Bikita Minerals management and community at large despite being alerted of the plight of the workers through various letters seeking dialogue. This also extents to the sub-contractors engaged by Bikita Minerals where rampant abuses and unfair labour practices and unsafe working environments are now the order of the day. Rampant casualization of labour, unlawful transfers of workers to subcontractors and unilateral variation of employment contract is being initiated by the two managers leaving workers wondering if there is job security. Alleged cases of rampant sexual abuse from female workers by Chinese and local managers have been received and have largely been ignored by the two managers leaving victims of the abuses vulnerable and exposed,”. Mhike firmly declared in a letter he authored on February 7, 2024 that the Ministry only recognizes the Church of Christ as the Responsible Authority (RA) of the schools and not individuals thereby putting to rest a wrangle that has been running since 2016 when a group of individuals took over the schools. Mhike could not be contacted for comment by the time of going to Press. The wrangle arose after the late Zebeddia Togarepi and a few other individuals formed a splinter grouping called Hippo Valley Christian Mission that took over all the schools and appointed Samuel Mahwehwe as the education secretary. The Mahwehwe arrangement has always been challenged since 2016. The immediate past president of the Church of Christ Reverend Edwin Magwidi told The Mirror in an interview that he welcomed the intervention by the Ministry. “As a church we welcome the developments as this will bring sanity in our schools. A few individuals are abusing church resources for their personal gain. When the missionaries left in 1983 we used to run our schools using congregational structures before we decided to have a central government to run the schools. “In 2015, the church drafted a constitution which governs how both the church and schools were going to be run but a few individuals decided to take over the schools,” said Rev Magwidi. Mahwehwe accused Rev Magwidi of misleading the nation when called for a comment by The Mirror. He alleged that Magwidi was leading a church outfit which is different from the original Church of Christ in Zimbabwe was founded in 1947. “I received the correspondence from the permanent secretary but I find it similar to other corespondences we got from his predecessors including Sylvia UteteMasango. They stated that they will not meddle in the church leadership wrangle,” said Mahwehwe. Part of the letter reads “Our Ref D/229/1, The President Church of Christ. Attention Pastor E Magwidi. RESPONSIBLE AUTHORITY OF CHURCH OF CHRIST SCHOOLS. We refer to the above matter. “Please be advised that pursuant to our meeting held on 12 January 2024 at our offices, we have perused the records for the schools indicated in Annex 1 of your documents and we note that the responsible authority of those schools is the Church of Christ. We further advise that the Ministry is not involved in the leadership wrangles within the church but only deals with the Church of Christ as a legal person with a capacity to do what body corporates are allowed to do at law and this includes establishing and managing a school. Thus, the Ministry only recognizes the Church of Christ as the Responsible Authority of the aforesaid schools and not individuals “Please note that this communication cancels the previous correspondences written by the Ministry to the Church of Christ concerning this subject matter dated 21 December 2016 and 16 February 2017.” The first Church missionaries started work in the eastern part of Zimbabwe in 1893 and established mission stations in Mount Silinda and Chikore in 1895 as well as satellite congregations in Beacon Hills, Emerald Hill and Mziter. Council should make sure that the public infrastructure is user-friendly for us. “Council must also allocate land to the PWD community to carry out various projects which include gardening and vending since a large number of us earn a living through vending. Speaking in an interview with The Mirror at Makoholi Research Institute recently, Chamisa said insurance was important particularly when the country is facing a debilitating drought like the current one. Insurance enables farmers to restock at the end of the drought, said Chamisa. He urged farmers to be proactive in making decisions to save their animals. He also urged farmers to make use of local resources like stover and prepare feed for their animals and for those with water, planting pastures for feed will be critical. Chamisa said farmers should destock nonproductive cattle especially the old and non-breeding whilst they are still in condition so that they are able to salvage value and buy feed to save the remaining animal. Old Mutual Insurance Company Agronomist Brian Nyasha Nyamande said the general uptake of livestock insurance has been low for some years now as farmers say it’s expensive. Insurance and Pensions Commission (IPEC) Public Relations Manager Lloyd Gumbo said Livestock is exposed to various risks such as disease outbreaks, natural disasters, or theft and to manage these risks, farmers should insure their livestock so that they do not lose out. “The uptake of agricultural insurance is generally low. We are implementing various initiatives to increase the uptake of agricultural insurance including livestock insurance. Some of the initiatives include development of a regulatory framework for agricultural index insurance with the intention of facilitating access to agricultural insurance by smallholder farmers. We are also implementing consumer awareness initiatives to educate smallholder farmers about the importance of agricultural insurance in mitigating risks,” said Gumbo. He added that there has been an increase in the uptake of agricultural insurance, particularly for the 2023/2024 agricultural season rising to at least 7% from an average of 3% over the years. The Mirror: Ihwai nekuhwikwa Page 12 3 - 9 May 2024 www.masvingomirror.com International News Kenya, Tanzania brace for Cyclone Hidaya as flood death toll rises Kenya and Tanzania have been bracing for a cyclone on the heels of torrential rains and floods that have devastated East Africa, killing nearly 400 people and forcing tens of thousands from their homes. Cyclone Hidaya is inching closer to the eastern coast of Tanzania, with an expected landfall later on Friday, according to the latest weather forecast. It is also likely to bring more rain to neighbouring Kenya, including in the major coastal city of Mombasa, just north of the eye of the cyclone. “Crucially, the coastal region is likely to experience Cyclone Hidaya, which will result in heavy rainfall, large waves and strong winds that could affect marine activities in the Indian Ocean,” the office of Kenyan President William Ruto said. Floods in Kenya have already claimed at least 210 lives since March, according to updated tolls from the Ministry of Interior and National Administration on Friday. It said 125 people have been injured, 90 are missing, and 165,500 people are displaced. Ahead of the expected cyclone, Ruto’s government also ordered mandatory evacuations for residents near 178 dams and water reservoirs in 33 counties, and the government warned citizens to remain on alert. The rains have been amplified by the El Nino weather pattern – a naturally occurring climate phenomenon typically associated with increased heat worldwide, leading to drought in some parts of the world and heavy downpours elsewhere. In Tanzania, at least 155 people have been killed in flooding and landslides in recent days. With the arrival of Hidaya, there are more fears of weather disruption. “The presence of Hidaya Cyclone … is expected to dominate and affect the weather patterns in the country including heavy rain and strong winds in some regions near Indian Ocean,” the Tanzania Red Cross Society said on the social media platform X. The heavier-than-usual rains have also killed at least 29 people in Burundi, with 175 people injured, and tens of thousands displaced since September last year, the United Nations said. aljazeera.com

The Mirror: Ihwai nekuhwikwa Page 14 3 - 9 May 2024 www.masvingomirror.com Crime and Courts News MIRROR REPORTER MASVINGO – In a sudden turn of events, Zanu PF Masvingo Provincial Youth chairperson who is facing three counts of assault and one of negligent driving has reported former Masvingo Mayor, Collen Maboke for attempted murder. Delight Mandebvu who was involved in an accident with Maboke’s vehicle on March 3, 2024, took eight weeks to report his attempted murder case. He only reported the case after Police served him with summons to appear in court for assault. He will be appearing in court next Wednesday. Masvingo Police Spokesperson Inspector Kudakwashe Dhewa told The Mirror that he needed to look for the report. According to sources, Mandebvu says Maboke broke the former’s leg when he attempted to run over him with his car. He says that he had an altercation with Maboke after their cars side-swiped about 50km from Masvingo along Masvingo-Mutare Highway. Efforts to get a comment from Mandebvu were futile as his mobile phone went unanswered. Maboke referred The Mirror to the Police. According to the well-publicized case, Mandebvu who was driving from Masvingo towards Bikita at night had a side-swipe with a vehicle that was being driven by Maboke’s wife Tariro and Maboke was a passenger. Mandebvu allegedly made a U-turn and drove after Maboke’s vehicle and blocked it after 10km. He allegedly assaulted Maboke, his wife and his relative Simbarashe Matyei. As he haggled with Maboke in the middle of the highway, an oncoming vehicle struck his leg and Maboke managed to jump off the road thereby escaping the accident. Mandebvu was reported to Masvingo Rural Police Station and a docket was opened against him for assault and negligent driving. Sources said Police were surprised when Mandebvu reported attempted murder charges after being served with the court date. There was an unwillingness on the part of Police to open a docket until the case was transferred to the Law and Order Section, sources told The Mirror. Mandebvu has a notorious record with the law as he has been arraigned for stock theft (later cleared), disorderly conduct and taking the law into his own hands, indebtedness and maintenance. He was sued by the late Bikita MP, Kennedy Matimba for not paying rentals and was in court with his wife for maintenance. However, cases where complainants against Zanu PF violence are turned into accused and arrested by Police are common. A recent report by the Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission found out that this was common if not the norm at Gutu Police Station where Cames Myambo is the Officer-in-Charge. Former Mayor Maboke reported for attempted murder Collen Maboke.
The late Makechemu Tevera. The Mirror: Ihwai nekuhwikwa Crime and Courts news Page 15 3 - 9 May 2024 www.masvingomirror.com TRYMORE TAGWIREI MIRROR REPORTER MASVINGO – A Gutu family is angry because Police has not arrested a man who severely assaulted their relative two weeks ago resulting in the loss of three teeth and a suspected broken rib. The victim, Makechemu Tevera (44) was later found hanging in the kitchen of the accused and it is not clear whether this was suicide or there was foul. The family of Makechemu is livid that the suspect, Cuthbert Javangwe has not been arrested and the case is allegedly being swept under the carpet. Police has allegedly not arrested Javangwe despite that his family agreed to pay 13 herd of cattle for the crime and have so far delivered three, according to sources. Provincial Police spokesperson Kudakwashe Dhewa confirmed the case and said that the report he has is that this was sudden death due to suicide. Chief Chimombe said the matter was brought to his attention and could not be drawn into commenting further. “I am aware of that matter but i cannot comment at the moment,” he said. Many people in Gutu are complaining that criminal cases in Gutu including rape have become transactional where investigators are allegedly paid to destroy cases. The deceased’s brother Hondo Tevera told The Mirror that his family suspects that that the deceased was killed and instead of arresting the accused, Police told the family to take the matter to Chief Chimombe. “Police urged us to approach the Chief over the issue and the accused’s family pleaded guilty. The Chief asked them to pay 13 beasts and cover all burial expenses. “They only paid three beasts. We want justice for our Makechemu, Police must arrest the culprit,” he said. Sources said on April 20,2024, Tevera was at Mushwayi Business Centre and he saw Javangwe assaulting his uncle at the shops. He refrained Javangwe from assaulting his uncle but the latter turned against him and they had an altercation. Javangwe assaulted Tevera resulting in the loss of three teeth and a suspected broken rib. He went to Javangwe’s homestead to have a dialogue with the accused’s parents. He was found hanging in the accused’s kitchen at around 9pm. Tevera’s family was informed the next day about the that tragic news. Assistant Inspector Fanuel Gumede who is said to have investigated the matter said he was not aware of the case when The Mirror called him for comment. Anger as Gutu Police turns blind eye on criminals INCREASE GUMBO MIRROR REPORTER CHIREDZI – Magistrate Diana Masiiwa has remanded a Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) officer stationed at Chiredzi Police camp in custody for stealing three 20 packs of Luck Strike (Everest) cigarettes from OK Chiredzi supermarket. Anderson Chasaizi (36) of 1224 Mugadza Street, Tshovani, Chiredzi is facing three counts of theft. Chasaizi has already pleaded guilty to stealing the packs on March 11, March 22, and April 28, 2024, when he was arrested. He told the court that he could not afford the biscuits and resorted to stealing on all three occasions. Chasaizi went away unnoticed on the first two occasions. He hid the pack in tissues on the second count. On the fateful day, an employee monitored his movements. Chasaizi hid the cigarette box in his trousers pockets and also took a loaf of bread that he went to the counter with. He used his bank card to pay for the bread and it was declined. He was detained by security on his way out at the instruction of the employee. Ok Chiredzi branch manager Progress Tadirika then filed a Police report leading to his arrest. BY FR ISIAH DHLIWAYO The doctrine of Soteriology is the acme of Christian theology. But according to Brian Gaybba (1988:6),the concept of salvation is not exclusively Christian. The etymology of the term soteriology is from the Greek words soter,"saviour"and soteria,"salvation". Soteriology denotes the doctrine of salvation.Theologically,we can distinguish two concepts of soteriology, that is subjective and objective salvation. In this theological reflection,I will define , highlight and reflect on soteriology, the doctrine of salvation as inclusive of the person and work of Christ. In other words soteriology and Christology are understood to be mutually inclusive. Thus , Theologically,we can therefore distinguish two concepts of Soteriology, that is, subjective and objective salvation. In Christian theology ,the term salvation (soteriology) is used to express God's provision for the plight of humans. It is a term associated with being saved or delivered from danger or the threat of death. It is also explained thus ," The sense of rescue or deliverance is still uppermost but the reference is deliverance from sin and the wrath of God as the ultimate fate which awaits the sinner."(Ferguson S.B.1988:610). Ferguson sees it not unfair to say that the title of God and Jesus as "savior" sums up the Christian doctrine of God in relation to His people. Soteriology, the doctrine of salvation, embraces all of time as well as eternity past and future. It relates in one way or another to all of mankind, without exception. Soteriology has ramifications in the sphere of the angels and it is the theme of both the Old and New Testaments. It is personal, national, and cosmic. And it centers on the greatest Person, our Lord Jesus Christ. In Christianity, soteriology is inextricably linked with Christology, for both fields centralize the significance of Christ as savior. Christian soteriology, then, developed vis-à-vis the process of defining doctrinally who Jesus is and what his life, death, and resurrection mean for humankind. Objective Salvation and Subjective Salvation. This refers to what Jesus already achieved -the saved situation.Subjective salvation refers to humanity's participation or involvement in their redemption.Salvation is inclusive of both what Jesus has achieved and our sharing in it.Objective and subjective salvation then implies the already-and - not yet. These complement each other. Objective salvation has several aspects that include:(1)The risen life. The understanding that the saved situation exists in that a human being Jesus Christ ,the God -man having conquered sin ,death and the devil.(2) Reconciliation between God and humanity.(3) The winning of forgiveness.(4)The winning of graces.(5) The opening of heaven's gates Subjective Salvation also takes note of several aspects:(1)Sharing in Jesus' unity with the Father-Justification by faith (Protestant position ) and sanctification (Roman Catholic stance).(2) Benefitting from the transforming power of Jesus ' Spirit.(3) Building up community between people.(4)Humanizing our environment. The theory of the Cross of Christ as a moral example has its protagonist in Peter Abelard. There is dialectic between objective and subjective aspects of salvation (of humanity) from sin and its consequences.Abelard's basic presupposition is that in the incarnation, life ,death and suffering of Christ , humanity has an epitome or example of supreme love.Salvation is subjective or is a human effort in that the Christ -event evokes a response of love (Culpepper 1966,1988:88-91;cf . Abelard's Epitome of Christian Theology and Commentary to the Romans.;McGrath 1994 ,1997:404-408.) Gaybba(1988:64-65) notes that the metaphorical use of ransom in denoting the soteriological importance of the suffering and death of Christ is both good and biblical.,with emphasis on the fact that the liberation of humanity from sin by God was dearly costly to both God and Jesus. It is true that sin is oppressive and enslaving. Thus God does not hold humanity in bondage. However the reverse is true of God ,that is the Cross of Christ is God's gift to humanity.(Aulen 1970:49-50) Concerning God's redemptive action in history, salvation was first understood in exclusive terms of the God -Israel covenant relationship. In Israel 's linear conception of time and the eschatological hope of God leading humanity and history to a definitive end - encapsulated in the apocalyptic - eschatological Day of Yahweh, salvation was understood in universalistic terms-as inclusive of other nations or all people. However there is also reformed doctrine of soteriology whose main thrust is about the idea that God sits outside of time (which is absolutely true), so when God created the world, he looked into the future and saw who would choose to believe the gospel and who would not. And it was those people who he foresaw would have faith that he elected (or predestined) for salvation. Reformed theology focuses on theology shared with Lutheranism and Anglicanism a commitment to the generic doctrines of the Protestant Reformation: justification by grace through faith; the sufficiency and normative authority of Scripture alone; and a basic opposition to the sacramental system and the magisterial authority of the church. Reformed churches are also Protestant churches—rejecting the claims of the Pope to be the Head of the Church, acknowledging instead that Jesus Christ is the Head of his Church, and that he rules and governs his Church by his Word and Spirit. THE Sport THE Mirror 3 - 9 May 2024 www.masvingomirror.com masvingo mirror masvingomirror Who will win the Premier League title? Liverpool may be in serious trouble but Arsenal remain one point ahead of Manchester City with the finishing line in sight This time last year, it looked like Arsenal were going to win a first Premier League title since 2004. Unfortunately for the Gunners' long-suffering supporters, Mikel Arteta's exciting young side ran out of steam down the home stretch and Manchester City finished first yet again. The champions are favourites to prevail once again this season but, as April approaches, they're now under even more pressure than last year. Indeed, while injuries and fatigue have finally taken their toll on Liverpool, Arsenal one point clear of City at the top of the table, albeit having played one game more. So, who will finish the season at the summit? Ahead of matchday 27, GOAL attempted to predict the future by running through all three teams' remaining fixtures - and the good news is that we've been putting in the actual results and standings after every round, and will continue to do so for the rest of the campaign, meaning you can continue make fun of us in the comments section whenever we get something horribly wrong! Nottingham Forest vs Liverpool Forest are an awkward proposition at home but the injury-ravaged Reds should have Mohamed Salah, Darwin Nunez and Dominik Szoboszlai back. They say form goes out the window in a derby but Erling Haaland and Kevin De Bruyne are firing on all cylinders and should blow Erik ten Hag's frustratingly fragile squad away. The hosts are all-but-relegated, so expect the suddenly free-scoring Gunners to win comfortably once again. goal.com
