Educationists who declined to be named said conditions at Globe and Phoenix are inappropriate as they expose pupils to the vagaries of weather including extreme cold and searing heat. The tents were at one time blown away by winds during a heavy thunderstorm. Globe and Phoenix was decommissioned in March last year after one of the classroom blocks curved in and since then pupils are learning from tents pitched at the Sally Mugabe Primary School grounds. A plan has been drawn out to build a new school at an identified location but the business community including the councillor and top businessman Dr Solomon Matsa who made pledges to fund the construction of classroom blocks are not forthcoming. The Minister of Primary and Secondary Education, Torerayi Moyo told journalists on the sidelines of a Training of Trainers workshop held at a local hotel last week that Government and stakeholders are still determined to put up a new school. Kwekwe is where President GARIKAI MAFIRAKUREVA HARARE – The case in which former Minister of Education, Dr Dzingai Mutumbuka lost his house to suspected fraudsters in Harare involves well organised crime, the Investigating Officer, Detective Constable Tafadzwa Marashe has said. Marashe who works for the Criminal Investigations Department (Property) told Harare Magistrate Ethel Chichera during his two-and-half hour cross examination that the alleged fraud in which title deeds to Mutumbuka’s Chisipite residence were forged is one of Mutumbuka fell victim to well organised crime - Police To page 2 Torerayi Moyo.

The Mirror: Ihwai nekuhwikwa Local news Page 2 05 - 11 April 2024 www.masvingomirror.com Mutumbuka fell victim to well organised crime - Police From page1 the most sophisticated organized crimes he has seen. The case is being heard at Rotten Row Magistrates Court. Marashe said that although Prosper Biziweck and Tatenda Wakatama (who are accused of forging title deeds to the property) were not mentioned in the agreement of sale, they all played their part in prejudicing Mutumbuka of his US$600,000 Chisipite house. He said Biziweck’s role was to obtain title deeds from the Registrar of deeds’ office and for that he used his alleged girlfriend Lynna Mlambo who works there as a supervisor. In the syndicate Wakatama’s role is to look for buyers, while Jonah Ngome who is still at large acts as the owner of the house during the sale to potential buyers. After getting the deed, Ngome digitally manipulated it into his name and Wakatama found the buyer. The title deeds were filed back after the document was altered with a forged name of Ngome. Mlambo stated in her warned and cautioned statement that she was involved in the scam but turned hostile in court and said that she did not know all the accused and had never met them. It is the State case that on June 22, 2021, Mlambo, connived with her boyfriend Prosper Biziweck, Tatenda ‘Shaft’ Wakatama, two others and Ngome to forge Mutumbuka’s title deed 4480/88. They forged the deed into Ngome’s name. Magistrate Chichera postponed the case to April 12, 2024. Tough environment for Globe and Phoenix pupils From page 1 Mnangagwa was MP almost all his entire political life. The Midlands town was his power base until he became President in 2017. Moyo however, told journalists that there is no timeframe to the construction of the school yet. “The Ministry and its partners have pledged to construct the school and we are on course to achieving and fulfilling that promise. At the moment the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints is mobilising funds. “We are going to delegate a team to visit the site where the school will be constructed. Although I can’t give time frames as to when exactly the school will be constructed this must be very soon. Ministry officials and the church will visit the site followed by disbursement of funds to construct the school,” said Dr Moyo. He revealed that individuals like Matsa have pledged to fund the building of a classroom block for the school. A source however, told The Mirror that plans for the school were drawn and all documentation for the project is in place but what is not there is the money. “All the paperwork is in place but there is no money to start the project. The school is looking up to Government to assist because even those who pledged are yet to come forward,” said the source. “The learning environment is tough for children because they are always exposed to bad weather conditions. Last year their tents were blown away during heavy thunderstorms and this heat is also affecting them,” added the source. Government has been promising to construct a new school since the incident happened and a place to construct the school was identified near Globe and Phoenix Secondary School. He said there is a sad syndrome in Zimbabwe where MPs who are afraid of losing elections bar others from carrying out development project in their areas. He said development was not for an individual but for all people (Rume rimwe harikombi churu). Ganyani invited every son and daughter of Gutu East with development ideas to come and implement them. He said he was not worried by new players even if those people are one day going to challenge him for the position of MP. Ganyiwa was speaking at the launch of the Mbuya Mary Simbi Computer Lab at Makudo Business Center under Chief Chitsa, Gutu East. He hailed Divine Simbi Ndhlukula for launching the project which will benefit seven primary and secondary schools in the area. “I want to thank Simbi-Ndhlukula for this grand library for our children. This will not only bring them to the digital world but will cut them off from drug abuse. “I am proud of her work and in fact I am proud of all progressive people in my constituency. It is sad that so many politicians are afraid of people who bring development to their areas. I have told people that those with development projects must come in their numbers. “MPs must remember that they are just people and they should give way to better individuals if they come,” said Ganyiwa. Ganyiwa took the opportunity to congratulate Minister of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, water and Rural Resettlement Anxious Masuka who comes from his constituency for being adjudged the best performing cabinet minister for 2023. The Mirror: Ihwai nekuhwikwa Local news Page4 05 - 11 April 2024 www.masvingomirror.com SIMBARASHE MTEMBO MIRROR REPORTER MASVINGO – Masvingo City Council lost 45.7% of its treated water in February this year alone and this has a value of US$432 714. Councilors raised alarm over Non-Revenue Water (NRW) which they said is too high and they demanded solutions from management to reduce the water loss. NRW is the difference between the amount of water produced by a water utility for consumption/use and the amount of water that is actually billed to consumers. NRW is lost through theft and faulty infrastructure as pipe leaks, bursts and non-functional meters. The city recorded 88 pipe bursts during the same period. The city supplies 30 million litres of water a day. Councillors asked management to ensure that non-functional meters are replaced by ones that were procured by the local authority to avoid using estimates during billing. “We cannot keep coming back to council to discuss water meters every time. We bought water meters and we still have some in stock. Residents with non-functional meters can make payment plans or we can just install the meters and bill the owner,” said Ward 10 Councillor Sengerai Manyanga. Acting engineer Kudzai Mbetu told the meeting that NRW increases the more water supply improves. “Water supply has improved and it comes with an increase in Non-Revenue Water as some of the treated water is lost before it even gets to residents through leakages and non-functional meters. Some pipes are old and this contributes to leakages. The department is bent on ensuring that NRW decreases,” he said. Town Clerk, Engineer Edward Mukaratirwa said the best practice for NRW in third world countries is 25%. “Our NRW is within range considering that the best practice is 25%. It is impossible to achieve no NRW losses,” he said. Masvingo loses US$0,4m treated water Kudzai Mbetu.

The Mirror: Ihwai nekuhwikwa Local news Page 5 05 - 11 April 2024 www.masvingomirror.com 071 689 5703 Chipinge Times & Two Nations Editor: Ellen Mlambo Editorial Comment There is nothing to celebrate about the recent grading of the 57km Gutu-Buhera Road as it is something that should have been happening often and regularly. However it had to happen thanks to the forthcoming Independence Celebrations taking place this time in Buhera District at Murambinda Growth Point. This is a very important road as it connects the two provinces of Masvingo and Manicaland. However it was so bad that one could take more than one and half hours to cover the 57km of dirt road, especially with a small vehicle. The bad state of rural roads is not only found on this particular road. Most rural dust roads in Zimbabwe, except for a few rural tarred roads, are indeed in a terrible state. This is happening even with the roads that link rural health centres. We need to see Rural Councils doing much more in terms of road rehabilitation. Understandably resources and equipment may be scarce, but councils can definitely do much more with what is available. The GutuBuhera Road was graded within a very short period of less than three days by four graders. The question is why wasn’t this done before? What it means is it can be done but for a very long time it was not done and was later done more as an emergency in preparation of the Independence Celebrations in order to allow officials and other people from Masvingo and Matebeleland South Provinces to travel in some measure of comfort to Murambinda. Are we then going to see the same road being regularly graded after the celebrations? The likely scenario is that we may have to wait for another long period before we see graders coming back to grade this road. We have other numerous rural roads that link schools, health centres, business centres and communities that have been crying for repairs for years now. Here Rural Councils need to up their road rehabilitation game so that we can also have a glimpse of the forthcoming year of 2030 when we will be expecting to find ourselves in the upper middle income bracket. The rural roads we are currently having depict a picture of poverty and neglect which is not the vision we are aiming for as a nation. Rural Councils need to prioritise road maintenance INCREASE GUMBO MIRROR REPORTER CHIREDZI – The lease agreement for Chigarapasi, the biggest beerhall in the country signed between Chiredzi Town Council (CTC) and a company called Big Five is missing. This is making it difficult for the local authority to evict Big Five which the City fathers accuse of neglecting the beerhall that is now in some state of dilapidation. It is not clear how this happened but Chiredzi Town Secretary Wesley Kauma says his predecessor, the late Charles Muchatukwa did not leave or handover the lease agreement. He told a full council meeting on Tuesday last week that there is no documentation on the agreement and the only copy could be with Big 5. Council chairperson Jameson Charumbira proposed a motion to give Big 5 three months’ notice ultimatum to vacate the place. "We should immediately give him three months’ notice to vacate the place," said Charumbira. Kauma however, advised council to take caution because the local authority did not have documents. The Mirror understands that the lease agreement expires in September and any immediate three months’ notice will violate the agreement. The majority of councillors expressed their desire to evict Big 5 with immediate effect. There has been widespread protest from residents and council members alike, demanding that Big Five's lease be revoked at Chigarapasi due to their failure to renovate the beer. The Mirror: Ihwai nekuhwikwa Page 6 05 - 11 April 2024 www.masvingomirror.com INCREASE GUMBO MIRROR REPORTER CHIREDZI – A bill to empower People with Disabilities (PWDs) came under spotlight in Chiredzi recently. Zimbabwe Head of Christian Denomination (ZHOCD), a grouping of Christian churches led the dialogue on the bill which was held at the United Methodist Church in Zimbabwe. The discussions are happening across the country’s 10 provinces. The key issues in the bill are fighting stigmatization of PWDs and empowering them in various spheres of life. On stigmatization the Bill seeks to punish parents who refuse to marry their children to PWDs by making that a criminal offence. On empowerment, the Bill seeks to introduce a disability quota in politics. It also seeks to establish a Commission for disability, to make it mandatory to ensure access to education for PWDs and to establish disability desks at every organization. There will also be tax exemption on vehicles and gadgets used by PWDs of the Bill passes into law. Zimbabwe Council of Churches (ZCC) Programs Coordinator, Julius Pembere said the purpose of the discussion is to consolidate findings and submit them to Parliament. “This is an ongoing discussion in the 10 provinces of the country. As ZHOCD we decided to take the mandate and we will consolidate the findings and submit them to Parliament,” said Pembere. The discussion was faciliated by Advocate Design Chikwape of and more than 20 PWDs’ from ward 1, 2 and 3 attended. Susan Machingura emphasized PWDs’ quota in politics. “As PWDs we want that quota system which was given to women and youth in politics,” she said. ZHOCD encompasses church bodies such as Zimbabwe Council of Churches (ZCC), Union for the Development of Apostolic Church (UDACIZA), Evangelical Fellowship of Zimbabwe (EFZ) and Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace (CCJP). Ashual Chikandiwa who has Albinism said Government should make it easy for PWDs to access schools. Sibusiso Mharadze who has a hand impairment said the Bill enforce disability desks at every institution. “There is need for a disability desk at every institution so that PWDs will be assisted easily,” she said. The Mirror: Ihwai nekuhwikwa Page 7 05 - 11 April 2024 www.masvingomirror.com Kwekwe Round up PRISCA MANYIWA-MASUKU MIRROR REPORTER KWEKWE - Kwekwe Ward 10 councillor, Dr Solomon Matsa has in the face of a critical shortage of public toilets in the Midlands town, offered part of his CBD land for the local authority to build one. Matsa who owns King Solomon Hotel offered the land in the face of an outcry in the city over lack of public toilets. “I want to offer the City council land to build a public toilet. The area is near the main bus terminus (rank) and it’s already as good as a toilet because residents are using the area to relieve themselves and the place stinks,” said Matsa during a full council meeting at the Civic Centre on Thursday. Kwekwe Town Clerk Dr Lucia Mkandhla appreciated Matsa’s gesture. “We appreciate the kind gesture by Dr Matsa and we have taken note of it,” said Mkandhla. However, councillors expressed their impatience at management’s lack of urgency on the matter. “We have been talking about public toilets for almost three months and nothing has been done. We have bricks for the bus terminus toilet and they are getting broken because this project has taken too long to take off,” said Councillor Alex Senge of Ward 1. Councillor Dialis Muradzikwa who is part of the health committee said the matter of adequate ablution facilities at Mbizo 2 (maME) Market Place was taken to the director of health and the situation was a time bomb. Maxwell Judha of Ward 9 expressed concern that the project was not being implemented timeously “Our main problem is our discussions are not implemented. We need seriousness on every issue we talk about here so that we don’t run the risk of having the same subject over and over again,” said Judha. Kwekwe City has invested in two well maintained pay toilets in the CBD. Kwekwe councilor offers land for public toilets PRISCA MANYIWA-MASUKU MIRROR REPORTER KWEKWE – Bedbugs (tsikidzi in Shona) are spreading at an alarming rate in Kwekwe and councillors last week called for an urgent fumigation programme. Ward 9 councillor, Maxwell Judha told a full council meeting on Thursday that bedbugs were spreading at an alarming rate in Mbizo 7 and called on the City Council to urgently address the problem. He said the same reports have been received in Amaveni, the second largest suburb in Kwekwe after Mbizo. “Bedbugs have become a menace and they are spreading so fast, in my ward in Mbizo 7 singles apartments. “Last time we had reports from Amaveni but now in Mbizo we have reports of bedbugs which means they are spreading so I appeal to the health department to speed up the fumigation process before its too late,” said Judha. A bedbug is a parasite of birds and mammals which sucks blood. Travel is the main source of bedbugs. Bedbugs may not cause disease but they are an irritant that causes itching and loss of sleep. Excessive itching may cause secondary skin infection. The deputy health director Sister Patricia Shumba revealed that chemicals for fumigation were procured. “We have purchased chemicals to start fumigation of the areas affected so we will be calling you to assist to lead us in fumigating the affected areas,” said Shumba. The Mirror: Ihwai nekuhwikwa Kwekwe Round up Page 8 05 - 11 April 2024 www.masvingomirror.com PRISCA MANYIWA-MASUKU GOKWE - Residents of Gokwe Town have complained of debilitating water shortages caused by power cuts and boreholes that have broken down. Privilege Bayela said women bore the brunt of water shortages as every house core they do at home needs water. They carry 20kg water buckets on the head and another by the hand, she said. Women who spoke to The Mirror said they are walking up to a kilometre to boreholes and waiting in long queues because of power cuts and boreholes that have broken down. Gokwe Urban and Rural Association Spokesperson John Mbabala said the situation is dire with residents going for weeks without water. He also said that women and girls face the risk of being sexually abused as they walk long distances to fetch water. Gokwe town chairperson, Lisias Mutengwe confirmed the situation and said that the local authority is planning to repair broken down boreholes and sink new ones. “We are mobilising resources to repair the boreholes and we have budgeted for three boreholes to be sunk in areas like Mapfungautsi where there is an increase in population,” said Mutengwe. He however, said the matter of supplying water to the town is the responsibility of Zinwa. ZINWA spokesperson, Marjorie Munyonga said supplies in Gokwe are normal except during times of power cuts and breakdowns. She however, said that the authority was working to bring back broken boreholes. “There are normal supplies in Gokwe except for instances where the plant experiences power cuts or breakdowns. At the moment ZINWA is working on bringing back four boreholes to further improve the water situation in Gokwe,” said Munyonga. “Water supply is a major problem in Gokwe especially with these power cuts. We can go for more than a week without water. I stay in Ward 4 and we walk a distance of more than 2km to fetch water because the borehole in our ward is broken down. “This is a big challenge to women because water is life. Everything we do at home requires water. We have challenges where the girl child can be abused as they go long distances to fetch water,” said Bayela . Water crisis hits Gokwe Town PRISCA MANYIWA-MASUKU MIRROR REPORTER GOKWE - A Gokwe traditional healer told a Midlands magistrate that he would soon be reunited with his two deadly cobra snakes impounded by the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (Zimparks) in Kwekwe. The healer who appeared before Kwekwe Magistrates Mildred Matuvi said he would be reunited with the snakes back home in Gokwe. Self-styled n’anga, Polite Ncube of Gono Village, Chief Mkoka in Gokwe was caught carrying the snakes in a satchel in Kwekwe CBD at around 3 am last Monday. Ncube who appeared in court charged with contravening the Parks and Wildlife Act pleaded with the magistrate for a non-custodial sentence because he should not be separated from the snakes. He said he got the snakes from his grandfather four years ago. Magistrate Matuvi fined him US$200 or four months in prison. He was caught by Police officers on patrol. Ncube pleaded guilty to the offence. He said the snakes are his source of powers as they give him leads on herbs in his dreams. He told the court that Zimparks officials who impounded his snakes were getting spiritual attacks from his grandfather who appears to them at night. I will be reunited with my snakes – Gokwe n’anga tells magistrate Marjorie Munyonga PRISCA MANYIWA-MASUKU MIRROR REPORTER KWEKWE – Some 50 000 pupils dropped out of school between 2021 and 2023, the Minister for Primary and Secondary Education, Dr Torerai Moyo has said. He said as a result of the alarming figure, the Ministry and its partners including UNICEF, CAMPFED and ECOZI have begun working towards piloting an early warning system for mitigating school dropout. Dr Moyo attributed school dropouts to factors like poverty, orphaned and vulnerable children, climatic changes, drug abuse and COVID-19. During the COVID-19 pandemic a total number of 32 000 students dropped out of school and the number skyrocketed to 50 704 by the end of 2022. Dr Moyo was speaking to District Schools Inspectors (DSI) and other senior officials from the Ministry at a Training of Trainers workshop held at a local hotel last week on Wednesday. “We are here to mark the beginning of the Ministry of Primary and Secondary’s work towards piloting an early warning system for mitigating school dropout, an initiative being spearheaded by the Ministry working through its partners in the education sector. “It is shocking to see that 50 000 students dropped out of school around 2021 and 2022,” said Dr Moyo. The Minister called for action between the Ministry and its partners to make sure that mitigatory strategies are put in place to reduce the number of students leaving school. “The future of Zimbabwe lies in our youths and action must be taken and it must be taken now not tomorrow. “The Ministry on its own will not adequately address this challenge, that is why we are happy to be complemented by our partners in the name of UNICEF, CAMPFED and ECOZI and others who may not be here.’’ 50 000 pupils drop out of school Torerai Moyo.

The Mirror: Ihwai nekuhwikwa Page 9 05 - 11 April 2024 www.masvingomirror.com Business News SIMBARASHE MTEMBO MIRROR REPORTER MASVINGO – Government has approved 2024 financial budgets for 89 out of 92 local authorities with the remaining councils being Harare City, Hwange Local Board and Gokwe Town Council. Local Government and Public Works spokesperson, Director Gabriel Masvora confirmed the position to The Mirror. He said the reason why budgets of the three are yet to be approved is that there are some issues that still need to be dealt with. “As alluded to by Minister Winston Chitando, of the 92 local authorities in the country, only Harare, Hwange Local Board and Gokwe Town Council budgets are not approved,” he said. All local authorities have been using the 2023 rates until the approval of their budgets. Harare City spokesperson, Stanley Gama could not be reached for a comment by the time of going to Press. According to a statement released to The Mirror by Masvora, Harare’s US$570 million budget proposal was stopped because of eight main reasons. These include failure by the local authority to address the issues of water provision, sewer and waste removal and this is key because of the severe cholera outbreak last year. Harare is breaching Estate Fund management whose policy is not to use proceeds for operational costs. The issue of overstaffing resulting in more money being channeled towards salaries instead of service delivery is also raised among the concerns. Harare City books have not met external auditors’ requirements since 2017 and this year’s proposed budget does not address the issue. There is no monitoring of council projects with private players and remittance to council. The Council has failed to procure an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system for the past 5 years despite recommendations to acquire one from Parliament and the Auditor general. GZU is allegedly demanding 50% of all fees to be paid exclusively in US$. Shadreck Chidyamakuni, a Politics and Public Management undergraduate student filed an urgent Chamber application at the High Court in Masvingo to bar the university from demanding a 50% fees down payment exclusively in US$. Chidyamakuni who is represented by Martin Mureri of Matutu Mureri Legal Practitioners argued that GZU is manipulating and arm-twisting students to accept the illegality as they risk not being registered for the semester. He is seeking an order barring GZU from demanding exclusive US$ fees payments and that they accept payment in ZWL$ at the prevailing interbank rate. Chidyamakuni states that Section 7 (1) of the Exchange Control (Exclusive use of the Zimbabwean Dollar for Domestic Transactions) Regulations 2019 S.I 212 of 2019 as amended by section 2 of exchange control (Exclusive use of the Zimbabwean Dollar for Domestic Transactions) Regulations 2020 (No3) S.I 185 of 2020 allows for products and services charged in US$ to be paid for at the prevailing interbank rate. He is arguing that the ‘illegality’ will prejudice him as he will not be able to attend lectures, miss end of semester examinations and subsequently defer his studies. “It is clear that I have to pay half my fees exclusively in United States dollars unless the illegal position is reversed. If I do not, I would not be able to register for my semester and hence not able to attend classes with the consequence that I would not be able to seat for my examinations and the prejudice is irreparable. “The position taken by GZU essentially amounts to manipulation and armtwisting as I would then be forced to accede to the illegal demands so to continue with my education. What the first respondent is effectively saying is that I must either I must accept its illegal demand or forfeit of my studies altogether,” reads part of the application. Fees at GZU range from US$550 to US$900. GZU US$ fees challenged at High Court SIMBARASHE MTEMBO MIRROR REPORTER MASVINGO – Great Zimbabwe University (GZU) has reversed its decision to have 50% of undergraduate students fees paid exclusively in US$ and has extended the registration period to April 19, 2024. A letter signed by GZU registrar Sinikiwe Gwatidzo addressed to Matutu and Mureri Legal Practitioners dated April 2, confirms the position. The letter states that Zimbabwe is a multi-currency economy and students can pay their fees in either currency. “As a multi-currency economy, students are welcome to pay in any of the acceptable currencies in the country. The University further advises that the registration deadline for the current semester has been extended to April 19, 2024. “In the meantime we shall post this message to all student portals advising them of the same,” reads part of the letter. GZU spokesperson Anderson Chipatiso could not be reached for comment. The reversal comes eight hours after a Politics and Public Management student Shadreck Chidyamakuni filed an urgent chamber application at the High Court in Masvingo yesterday compelling GZU to accept fees payments in ZWL$. Chidyamakuni and Darlington Matola initially wrote a letter to GZU dated March 25, 2024, through their lawyer Martin Mureri demanding that the institution reverses the 50% fees payment in US$ and extends the registration period. GZU had given students a 14 day registration period that expired on March 28, after which a US$10 daily penalty would be charged. Ipfani Naupfiwa/ Zwanini Lani Lizwiwe Local news Page T4 05 - 11 April 2024 Defamation law in Zimbabwe BY MLONDOLOZI NDLOVU Law of defamation seeks to balance the right of an individual to be afforded protection against harm to his/her reputation and the right to free speech, freedom of expression and to proper access to information. Section 61 of the Constitution provides for the fundamental rights of freedom of expression and freedom of media. Freedom of expression includes the right to communicate information to others and to receive information. Freedom of expression means that an individual gets to express their views, opinions in any mode or font they want. It is a principle that supports the freedom of an individual or community to articulate their opinions and ideas without fear of retaliation, censorship and legal sanction. It is therefore a limited right Section 61 (5) (c) states that freedom of expression and media exclude malicious injury to a person’s reputation or dignity. This means that if one expresses themselves in a manner that injures one’s reputation or dignity, their freedom of expression and media will not be protected. A defamatory statement is one which is published orally or in writing which injures the person to whom it refers : •By lowering him/her in the estimation of reasonable ordinary persons generally. •By diminishing his/her esteem/standing in the eyes of ordinary members of the general public •By causing the person to be shunned or avoided or exposing him/her to hated, ridicule or contempt •By casting aspersions on his character, trade, business, profession or office To determine whether a statement is defamatory, one examines how ordinary, reasonable people would respond to the statement. The institution will consider whether or not in the eyes of ordinary citizens the animated picture is defamatory. How will a reasonable and ordinary person of average intelligence interpret the picture? In respect of written material, the test does not take account of how a reader with a morbidly suspicious mind or how an abnormally sensitive or supercritical reader would respond to the contents. The test is the response of ordinary, reasonable person. In Masuku v Goko & Anor 2006 (2) ZLR 341 (H) the court stated that, in determining whether or not a person has been defamed, the court should adopt a three-stage approach: •Consider whether the words complained of are capable of bearing the meaning attributed to them, that is, whether the allegedly defamatory meaning is within the ordinary meaning of the words; •Assess whether that is the meaning according to which the words would probably be reasonably understood; and •Decide whether the meaning identified is defamatory. In the case of ROY NYABVURE v ZIMBABWE NEWSPAPERS (1980) LTD HH 398-18, it was held that In a defamation claim the plaintiff has to make out a prima facie case on the following, •That the defendant made a false and defamatory statement concerning the plaintiff; •That there was an unprivileged publication to a third party and •Proof of the damages suffered. Therefore in order to sue,one will have to prove that the statement/ animated picture is false and defamatory (ruined reputation by lowering the institution in the estimation of reasonable, ordinary persons generally or degrades the standing of the institution in the ordinary members of the general public, that the defamatory statement was communicated to a third party and that the institute suffered harm. When the White House invited Muslim community leaders for a dinner this week celebrating the holy month of Ramadan, the responses started coming in fast: Decline. Decline. Decline. Many of the invitees, distressed over President Biden’s support for Israel’s war in Gaza, said they would not attend an iftar meal with the president on Tuesday evening while so many Palestinians were under siege. “How can we talk to you about famine and starvation over bread and steak?” said Dr. Thaer Ahmad, a Palestinian American doctor who was in Gaza in January. The moment epitomized just how problematic the war in Gaza has become for Mr. Biden, who is increasingly critical of Israel but still resisting calls from within his party to set conditions on weapons sales to the country. The White House pivoted quickly as it became clear that the Ramadan event would be controversial, holding a pareddown meal just for staff members and a separate meeting for Muslim community leaders like Dr. Ahmad. The meeting, which lasted for more than an hour, was attended by Mr. Biden; Vice President Kamala Harris; Jake Sullivan, the national security adviser; and other senior officials. Three doctors who had recently treated patients in Gaza were among those who spoke to the president. More than 32,000 people have been killed in the war, according to the Gazan health authorities. Dr. Ahmad said he told Mr. Biden that Israel’s impending ground invasion of Rafah would be a “blood bath and a massacre.” He also handed the president a letter from an 8-year-old girl in Gaza who lost her entire family in the war. “We in Rafah are suffering a lot because we live in a very small tent and the tank can enter the tent and run me over,” the girl wrote in the letter, which was obtained and translated by The New York Times. The letter continued: “We don’t want massacres and suffering. We want safety, to live like the rest of the world’s children. Please, Biden, stop this war, it’s enough, stop this war please.” After speaking for about six minutes, Dr. Ahmad told the president he was leaving. “I said, ‘Out of respect for my community, and out of respect for the many people who are grieving, and who are in a lot of pain, I have to walk out of this meeting." U.N. rights body weighs call to halt arms flows to Israel. The Israeli spy chief and Egyptian and Qatari officials are joining the C.I.A. director in the talks. The White House says Netanyahu agreed to open another crossing for aid after pressure from Biden. He said Mr. Biden responded that he understood. “Part of me wanted to express the frustration that the entire community has, the anger and the resentment,” Dr. Ahmad said. “But also part of me wanted to get up and walk out on the decision makers, and give them an idea of how it feels to have somebody walk away from them.” It was a far cry from a celebration last year at the White House marking the end of Ramadan, which drew hundreds of community leaders, White House staff and politicians who snacked on hors d’oeuvres and took selfies with the president. One attendee shouted “We love you!” to Mr. Biden before he started speaking. This year, as the Biden administration hosted its pared-down meeting and meal, protesters knelt outside the White House in prayer. Yuri Gripas for The New York Times Tuesday’s meeting with Muslim leaders and community members was among several the administration has held in recent months, both internally with staff and with outside groups, as it has tried to calm widespread indignation over the war. Mr. Biden’s stance has angered crucial constituencies in Mr. Biden’s base, including young people, Black voters and progressives. Karine Jean-Pierre, the White House press secretary, declined on Wednesday to comment on the details of Tuesday night’s meeting, saying it was private. But she said that the president knows that it was a “deeply painful moment for many in the Arab and Muslim communities.” “The president also expressed his commitment to continue working to secure an immediate cease-fire as part of the deal to free the hostages and significantly increase humanitarian aid into Gaza,” she said. “And the president made clear that he mourns the loss of every innocent life in this conflict — Palestinian and Israeli.” When asked about Dr. Ahmad walking out, Ms. Jean-Pierre said the president respected the right to peacefully protest. Salima Suswell, the chief executive officer of the Black Muslim Leadership Council, who also attended the meeting, said she told Mr. Biden about the “moral dilemma” some members of the Black Muslim community feel supporting him because of the war in Gaza. “Black people identify and somewhat relate to this issue that involves oppression and the dehumanization of people,” Ms. Suswell said. “Our ancestors lived through 400 years of it.” She said Mr. Biden said he was committed to the Black community. Ms. Suswell, who stayed for the duration of the meeting, said attendees shared their experiences from the ground in Gaza. One of the doctors passed around photos of children there, she said. Both Mr. Biden and Ms. Harris expressed that they wanted the war to end as soon as possible. When asked about calling for an immediate and permanent ceasefire, Mr. Biden said that Israel would push back because of concerns about the hostages. “They both said, ‘We don’t want to see this war continue,’” Ms. Suswell said. The Mirror: Ihwai nekuhwikwa Page16 05 - 11 April 2024 www.masvingomirror.com Religious News BY FR ISIAH DHLIWAYO The doctrine of the Trinity occupies a prominent place in the history of Christian Theology. One has to understand the relationship between the unity of God as opposed to pagan polytheism. This Theological Reflection explains the concept of Trinity in that the Father is God ,the Son is the same God and the Spirit is that same God.Thus the Church offered an answer or a solution by spelling out God as one Being in three persons (modes). Ferguson defines Doctrine of the Trinity as ,"The Christian doctrine of God. According to which he is three persons.... in one substance". Ferguson SB.(1988:700).The doctrine developed in the early church as the way in which the New Testament and the Holy Spirit could be accounted for. The words 'the Trinity' are the English equivalent of the Latin word Trinitas, which was coined by the early Christian writer Tertullian. The word, which, etymologically, means something like 'the tripleness', is used to refer collectively to the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. (https://www.rep.routledge.com/) Basically Trinity is defined in Christian doctrine, as the unity of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit as three persons in one Godhead. This doctrine of the Trinity is considered to be one of the central Christian affirmations about God. The Trinity strikes at the most foundational question of religion: “Who is God?” Christians have always believed in the Trinity: the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are God. There is one God, who exists eternally as three Persons. This is the foundational distinction between Christianity and every other religion. There has been the question of as to whether the history of the systematic exposition of the doctrine of the Trinity belongs with the doctrine of God or the doctrine of Jesus Christ. There are two reasons I will highlight in this Theological Reflection for some to say it should be treated as part of Christology. There is the reason that if God had not become human in Jesus Christ, there would never have been the doctrine (or problem) of the Trinity. The Old Testament does not speak of God as the triune God .There was the question of Jesus' relation to God before Jesus Christ was born and before He lived and acted with divine authority.Jesus had occasionally been called God."The virgin ....will give birth to a son ..... Immanuel" which means,"God with us ".(Mt.1:23),"Thomas said to him,"My Lord and my God "(John 20:28). The early church confessed Him as Lord .(Kyrios as most likely equivalent to the Old Testament title of Lord). That led to the view that the doctrine of Trinity belongs with the doctrine of Jesus Christ and His relationship (and that of the Holy Spirit). The doctrine of the Trinity teaches us that God is a relationship of perfect love between the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. The Trinity welcomes us as sons and daughters into this family communion of love. There is also the Historical argument that the doctrine of the Trinity evolves from the problem concerning Jesus Christ. This is partially because after the second century the church was faced with the teaching of Arius who said that Jesus Christ was a created being. He taught that before Jesus was born ,He was an important angel who became human. The church counter reacted by expounding on the relationship between Jesus Christ and God and the essential unity between the Father and the Son .Thus the development of the doctrine of Trinity ,The Father ,The Son and the Holy Spirit as the true God and equal to one another . Although the Son existed with his Father from all eternity ,he willingly became a human being in order to fulfil his Father's purpose for the salvation of human beings and the conquest of evil(Rom8:3,Gal4:4-5,Heb 2:14-15). When Jesus was born in Bethlehem, the Son added humanity to the deity that he always had.His entrance into human life came about through God's supernatural work in the body of Mary ,so that the baby born was both fully human and uniquely divine (Luke 1:30,35,2:42,49). The trinity begins in eternity, before time was and before creation had been set in train. The doctrine of Trinity shows us God living in the bliss of heaven. He is three Persons in one God :Father ,Son and Holy Spirit. The three are not to be thought of as separate individuals: they coinhere and act together, though each has his own sphere of operation. The Father is fount of Godhead:the Son is his Logos, thought, reason,or word , begotten eternally of the Father:and the Holy Spirit is the love ,power, wisdom proceeding from the Father and the Son. Each of these is not just an attribute or quality of a single personality but they are present in such unique degree and quality that they can be described as themselves being each no less than a person. And yet the three Persons act together always as one only God. This attempt to describe the ineffable cannot comprehend the infinite, nor can the creature understand the Creator .Yet we must make some attempt to express the inexpressible .The Eternal Logos ,Word or Reason of God ,took human nature of the Virgin Mary in order that through it he might express,as completely as it could be expressed in human terms, the nature of the Godhead. Besides revealing God he would redeem men, delivering them even at the cost to his own human nature of intensest suffering and of death itself, from their bondage to sin and Satan. Today,Trinity be applied in that the Trinity can be a model for our relationships on earth. Just as Father, Son and Spirit are joined, so we are joined together in our families. Each member of the family has a different role to play and unique talents to share, but we are all unified in holy relationship. However,The Encyclopædia Britannica (11th edition) states: "to some Christians the doctrine of the Trinity appeared inconsistent with the unity of God. ... they therefore denied it, and accepted Jesus Christ, not as incarnate God, but as God's highest creature by whom all else was created. ©02/04/2024 Systematic Theological reflection of the Doctrine of Trinity

The Mirror: Ihwai nekuhwikwa Religious news Page17 05 - 11 April 2024 www.masvingomirror.com What a privilege and honor it is to share God’s Word with others. Every Christian has the responsibility to represent Jesus to the world, but in this letter, I am writing specifically about the awesome responsibility of those who teach and preach God’s word. Daniel Webster said, “My greatest thought is my accountability before God.” It is true that “we shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ” (Rom 14:10), but it appears from Scripture that we will not all be judged the same way. Jesus taught, “When someone has been given much, much will be required in return; and when someone has been entrusted with much, even more will be required” (Luke 12:48, NLT). Likewise, James wrote, “not many of you should become teachers in the church, for we who teach will be judged more strictly” (James 3:1, NLT). As a minister of the Gospel, it is imperative that I not only study the word of God diligently but that I also maintain an awareness of my own heart and motives. I will answer to God for what I teach others, and I must ensure that my motives are truly for the benefit of others and not for self-gain. I recently was sent a preacher’s message, and I regret to say that he twisted and misused Scripture considerably. It is probably not surprising to you that the issue pertained to money and prosperity. Listening to this message reminded me of what A. T. Robertson said, “One proof of the inspiration of the Bible is that it has withstood so much poor preaching.” In the full context of the message, “giving to get” was overtly promoted, and the idea of receiving a 30, 60, or 100- fold return (monetarily) was strongly advocated. In the midst of this teaching, Mark 4:24 was used. It reads, “Take heed what you hear. With the same measure you use, it will be measured to you; and to you who hear, more will be given.” The problem with this is that Mark 4:24, in context with Jesus’ teaching, has absolutely nothing to do with money, with offerings, or with receiving a “harvest” of finances. Please take the time to read Mark 4 in its entirety, and you will see that this is true. Mark 4 is all about how a person hears the word of God. It is about the attitude, respect, and reverence that we give to Scripture. The context makes this very clear, and no one listening to Jesus teaching that day would have thought that Jesus was talking about a return on their giving (because he wasn’t). The Amplified version of Mark 4:24 clarifies Jesus’ intent well. It reads, “Be careful what you are hearing. The measure [of thought and study] you give [to the truth you hear] will be the measure [of virtue and knowledge] that comes back to you—and more [besides] will be given to you who hear.” When a preacher represents a verse as saying something that it does not say, he not only misleads people by presenting a false idea, he hinders people from grasping the truth that is really there. Distorting Scripture regarding money and offerings becomes particularly suspect when a minister claims that he has an anointing for increase on his life. Can you imagine one of the apostles or anyone in the New Testament making such a claim? It is certainly not there. An excellent text on Bible interpretation states, “To use the Bible for the preacher’s own agenda constitutes a reprehensible abuse of both the preaching office and the Bible.”[1] I am certainly not that minister’s judge, and he will not answer to me. I am, however, responsible to “test everything that is said. Hold on to what is good” (1 Thes 5:21, NLT). There is an enormous need today for ministers to be excellent students of Scripture and faithful proclaimers of truth. This means that we must adamantly resist the temptation to say anything that would appear to hype people or manipulate people. As I considered the message by that particular minister, I found myself asking the question, “What would people preach if it could not benefit them financially in any way?” Would they talk about how prosperous they are and how people have received great financial blessings by giving to their ministries? Would they take certain Scriptures and present the idea that they are about finances when in context, they are not? God help us to have pure hearts, clean motives, and godly methods! The issues that I speak of are nothing new. Paul addressed Timothy strongly about the need for sound doctrine. Consider his admonition in 2 Timothy 2:15 (NKJV). “Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” The Amplified version renders this passage, “Study and be eager and do your utmost to present yourself to God approved (tested by trial), a workman who has no cause to be ashamed, correctly analyzing and accurately dividing [rightly handling and skillfully teaching] the Word of Truth.” Several components of this verse are worth noting. First, Paul spoke of being “approved to God.” The goal of ministry is not to please people or even to get a crowd. It is also important to realize that “getting results” is not the goal of ministry either, especially if it involves distorting Scripture. The ultimate purpose of ministry is to honor God, allowing him to do what he desires in the lives of others. I was shocked many years ago when a minister became upset that godly standards and ethics concerning offerings and finances were shared in a corrective manner. He had been using some of the methods that I described earlier in this article, and he told me that since he’d been using those techniques, his offerings had increased four-fold. It seems that this person felt that “getting more money” was now the litmus test for what is true and legitimate. If we are not biblically principled, we will become carnally pragmatic. When Scripture, rightly understood and honestly applied takes a back seat simply to “what works” and what produces results, we are in real trouble. Let me repeat, Paul admonished Timothy to be “approved to God.” As a minister, I need to be reminded that I stand before God and that ultimately, he will evaluate my work. Paul was ever mindful of this. He writes: 2 CORINTHIANS 4:17 (NKJV) But we have renounced the hidden things of shame, not walking in craftiness nor handling the word of God deceitfully, but by manifestation of the truth commending ourselves to every man’s conscience in the sight of God. (emphasis added) 2 CORINTHIANS 2:17 (NLT) You see, we are not like the many hucksters who preach for personal profit. We preach the word of God with sincerity and with Christ’s authority, knowing that God is watching us. (emphasis added) The last part of 2 Timothy 2:15 addresses the accurate handling of Scripture. The phrase “rightly dividing the word of truth” literally means “to cut straight” or “to cut right.” Various commentators have identified different metaphors that illustrate this idea: A farmer who plows straight furrows in his field The construction of a straight road A stone mason who accurately cuts a stone so that it fits properly into the building A tentmaker (such as Paul himself) or another person cutting leather or fabrics so that which is cut will be of the correct size and dimension Vincent writes, “The thought is that the minister of the gospel is to present the truth rightly, not abridging it, not handling it as a charlatan (see on 2 Cor. 2:17), not making it a matter of wordy strife (ver. 14), but treating it honestly and fully, in a straightforward manner. [2] There is a tendency in today’s world for the believer (and even preachers) to skim through Scripture simply looking for a text to support whatever happens to be their need of the moment. God can certainly bless and encourage us with a particular text, but that does not take the place of the habit of carefully reading and diligently studying Scripture. Speaking of his study of the Bible, Martin Luther said, “If you picture the Bible to be a mighty tree and every word a little branch, I have shaken every one of these branches because I wanted to know what it was and what it meant.” Taking Scripture out of context can be done deliberately for the promotion of a premeditated agenda (such as getting people to give more money), but probably far more often it is done due to haste and carelessness and without malicious intent. Perhaps one of the most decontextualized verses in the Bible in recent years (I know I’m guilty of doing this to this verse) is Jeremiah 29:11 which reads, “For I know the plans I have for you,” says the LORD. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.” What a great verse! Of course, we all want to be helpful to people and encourage them. In addition to sharing this verse with others, many of us have probably found encouragement in it ourselves. I believe the principle in this text is true, and no doubt, the Holy Spirit can quicken hope in us through such a thought. But if all we do is skim through Scripture looking for encouragement, we are going to miss tremendous truths that help us develop a mature and solid faith. For example, in this particular passage in Jeremiah, it wasn’t just a random, hopeful thought. When we study it in context, the people of Judah had recently gone into Babylonian captivity. Some people were thinking God was going to miraculously and quickly deliver them. But in the verse immediately before this (Jer 29:10), God told them that they are not getting delivered quickly, but will be in captivity for seventy years. False prophets had been telling them they would experience a quick release, but Jeremiah told them: JEREMIAH 29:5-7 Build homes, and plan to stay. Plant gardens, and eat the food they produce. Marry and have children. Then find spouses for them so that you may have many grandchildren. Multiply! Do not dwindle away! And work for the peace and prosperity of the city where I sent you into exile. Pray to the LORD for it, for its welfare will determine your welfare. Jeremiah 29:11 was not addressed to a specific individual, but to the nation. It was certainly not a message that “you’re going to get blessed quickly.” It was going to be 70 years before they were delivered from captivity and returned to their land. From this passage we also learn that extended endurance and perseverance are often strongly required before eventual blessings are experienced. In short, we can’t read Scripture like some people read a fortune cookie— just looking for a quick, easy “Bless Me Verse.” We need to study Scripture looking for all that it contains, Spirit-inspired doctrine, reproof, correction, and instruction in righteousness” (2 Tim 3:16). If we are to be faithful preachers and students of Scripture, we must be diligent, reading Scripture in context and not superimposing our own wishful thinking on passages and making them say something the author never intended or the original audience never heard. Reduced to a mere shell, As I turned ominously pale. Body and environs you couldn’t smell, Poo and urine in my drug cell, In the dungeon where I fell. What a storm for me to quell, After taking drugs that they sell. Yet am here to tell the tale, As I am back from my hell. Food for life I could not eat, Becoming flabby and totally weak. Diseases galore I could not beat, Couldn’t even stand on my own feet. Drug addiction I could not defeat. How could I achieve this feat? Yet am here out of the heat, Back from hell, turning a new leaf. Rejoice and with me feast, For me what a real treat, As indeed I was dead meat. But sure death I did cheat. Free now from the peddler’s greed. Back from hell I stand here freed, Freed from depending on weed, Preventing the weed to totally succeed. CHIBHORANI TALK WITH SEKURU TAURAI Zvimwe zvinhu zvinomboitika muChibhoranilandka! It was indeed sad to see people’s houses being razed to the ground simply because they supposedly settled where they are not supposed to settle. You see there is no joy in seeing some family being left homeless in seconds with nowhere to go. Some people were ordered to destroy their own homes and relocate within a very short period. In that short period some had to quickly get rid of their valuable property with some selling a chicken for as little as US$1.00 or a goat for US$5.00. I am told that a man sold his car for a paltry US$200.00. Some had to camp in the open for days while looking for somewhere to go. Some had invested on their pieces of land to the tune of hundreds of thousands of the American money and were now running thriving agricultural projects but were ordered to leave immediately. Now as the dust slowly settles down on Operation No to Land Barons all the Chibhoraniland people need to sit down and seriously take stock of what happened, why it happened and find ways of preventing what happened. This phenomenon happened because some people happen to be used to the land grabbing that happened during the land reform period when it so happened that whites were kicked out of farms leaving large tracks of land vacant where anyone could just move on and settle. So even today someone can just claim that a certain unoccupied piece of land is his or hers and sell it for profit. These are the land barons. Then you get chiefs and kraal heads who subdivide their village open land and give it to hungry land seekers with some behaving like land barons and actually making money out of the exercise. You still get some who see an unoccupied piece of land and just decide to build their home there. Another problem is that some settlers had settled for more than a quarter of a century while others were on the land from as far back as gore ragochanhembe of 1935. All this happened with the full knowledge of law enforcers, traditional leaders, council officials and government itself. For all these many years no one told them they were settling at the wrong place and therefore committing a serious crime. Now all of a sudden they are being kicked out like criminals, arrested, jailed and fined in their own beautiful homeland of Chibhoraniland which they fought for during the liberation struggle. Of course zvimwe zvaizonyanyawo, kuvakira muhotacheni chaimo here zvitubu zvichipwa. There were extreme cases when people randomly settled themselves or were settled on wetlands, along river banks and close to water bodies. In some areas cattle, donkeys, goats, sheep and animals of the wild were left with little or no grazing land. You can also take note of the uncontrolled cutting of trees and burning of vegetation thus causing climate change and land degradation, ultimately leading to hunger and starvation. You see, zvimwe zvinhu zvagara hazvitoiti. Here we need to be guided by common sense also. However given this unfortunate and sad scenario we now need to see how it should never ever be allowed to happen again in beautiful Chibhoraniland. Food for thought. Hoko kudya kwepfungwa. The Mirror: Ihwai nekuhwikwa Sports news Page 21 05 - 11 April 2024 www.masvingomirror.com Manchester United no nearer elite than when Erik ten Hag took over At first there was no hint of panic from Manchester United. They played it well after this bewilderingly ragged game ticked into eight minutes of added time. They seemed to be in control of the situation, Bruno Fernandes and Mason Mount calmly running down the clock by guarding possession on the left flank, Chelsea’s frustration building as they edged closer towards a 3-2 defeat that would have been entirely of their own making. Ultimately, though, there is nothing secure about Erik ten Hag’s United. The initial composure faded, the shape disappearing, Noni Madueke given one last chance to run at Diogo Dalot on the right. A slip, a tumble, a blow of the referee’s whistle and suddenly the mood changed. Cole Palmer, nerveless from the spot, made it 3-3 with his second penalty of the evening. United were going to have to settle for a point. Manchester United players drop to the floor after conceding a fourth goal against Chelsea Erik ten Hag fumes at ‘unacceptable’ Manchester United collapse at Chelsea Only, on a night when chaos was the enduring theme, there was still time for United to push, for Chelsea to counter, and for Mauricio Pochettino to end up marching round the pitch long after full time, hugging anything that moved, whirring his arms at a public that cannot exactly be described as adoring, basking in the madness after seeing Palmer’s deflected shot whizz past André Onana. This could, of course, be the turning point in Chelsea’s season. This 4-3 win lifted them into the heady heights of 10th place, five points below United with nine games left, although it is worth maintaining a sense of perspective. There is a reason why Pochettino had looked so tense and irritable before the dramatic turnaround, even when his side were 2-0 up inside 19 minutes. After all, how would you feel if you were in charge of the Premier League’s silliest and most illogical team? Would you relax if you had to watch Axel Disasi’s attempts to pass out from the back? Would you be full of the joys of life after seeing Moisés Caicedo, your £115m midfielder, gift a wounded United hope by passing straight to Alejandro Garnacho? Chelsea, who have conceded at least twice in each of their past six matches, did their best to lose. Two-nil became 2-2 before half-time, Garnacho halving the deficit after Caicedo’s error, Bruno Fernandes equalising after a counterattack. Chelsea, so vulnerable defensively, were a mess at times. United’s second goal was hilarious. Marc Cucurella, Chelsea’s left-back, was on the right when Dalot crossed. Benoît Badiashile was marking two at the back post when Fernandes headed past Djordje Petrovic. Chelsea, so poor without the ball, had six back when United broke. It was still not enough. Manchester United may look to replace Pochettino still has problems to solve. At one point Disasi lost possession to Rasmus Højlund, who almost scored. At times, as the game lurched from end to end, Chelsea appeared to be playing without a midfield. Then, with 67 minutes on the clock, they were 3-2 down after Badiashile’s slack pass allowed Antony to send in a beautiful cross for Garnacho to head home. But what would it have meant if United had held on for a win that would have boosted their hopes of beating Tottenham and Aston Villa to a Champions League place. This was Antony’s first assist in the league this season and he still had to use the outside of his left foot to come up with it. His right foot remains an irrelevance and that makes him predictable. Not every team will find marking the Brazilian winger this daunting. At least Antony showed courage to recover from conceding the penalty for Chelsea’s second goal with a trip on Cucurella. But United were dreadful during those early moments. They were behind when Kobbie Mainoo lost possession, Enzo Fernández released Malo Gusto and Conor Gallagher’s shot beat Onana too easily. It is generally agreed that running is important at this level. The best teams have robust spines. United, who have no idea how to press, play at a pace more suitable to a Legends Game. This is why their opponents have so many shots on goal (Chelsea had 18 here). Nobody protects the defence. Mainoo is 18. At one point Casemiro produced a moment of stunning antiathleticism, trundling near Nicolas Jackson and looking not so much a Premier League footballer, more a fan who had paid for a premium VIP ticket granting him the right to watch from a safe distance as the Chelsea forward surged through the middle. In that context the late collapse was not a surprise. Ten Hag has been in this job for almost two years. United are no nearer the elite than when they hired the Dutchman. Ten Hag cannot complain if the new ownership decide to look for another manager this summer.
